Healthcare professionals may experience barriers to seeking healthcare that differ from the general population. We explored healthcare professionals' anticipated responses to experiencing chest pain following a period of stress using qualitative story completion method with healthcare professionals ( n  = 44). Data were analysed using reflexive thematic analysis, which identified three themes: '"Do I cry or just carry on?": A Culture of Suffering in Silence' identified worries that expressing health concerns would be perceived as weakness, with potential impact on career opportunities. Participants also described self-diagnosis and self-medication rather than help-seeking. '"Me? Have a panic attack?": Psychosomatic Shame' suggested mental health issues may be ignored due to stigma. '"We definitely don't take care of ourselves": Prioritising Pressures of Multiple Responsibilities over Self-care' identified real or perceived pressures to de-prioritise their health. Aim: In this narrative review we aimed to describe how stroke affects emotions and update the readers on the emotional disturbances that occur after stroke., Methods: We searched Medline from 1.1.2013 to 1.7.2019, personal files and references of selected publications. All retrieved systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials were included. Other references were selected by relevance., Summary of Review: The emotional response includes a reactive behavior with arousal, somatic, motivational and motor components, and a distinctive cognitive and subjective affective experience. Emotional category responses and experiences after stroke can show dissociations between the behavioral response and the cognitive and affective experiences. Emotional disturbances that often occur after stroke include fear, anger, emotional indifference, lack of understanding of other emotions, and lack of control of emotional expression. Emotional disturbances limit social reintegration of the persons with stroke and are a source of caregiver burnout. The evidence to support the management of the majority of emotional disorders in stroke survivors is currently weak and of low or very low methodologic quality. An exception are the disorders of emotional expression control where antidepressants can have a strong beneficial effect, by reducing the number and duration of the uncontrollable episodes of crying or laughing., Conclusion: Our current knowledge of the emotional disorders that occurs in acute stroke patients and in stroke survivors is heterogeneous and limited. Joint efforts of different research approaches, methodologies and disciplines will improve our current understanding on emotional disorder after stroke and indicate rational pathways to manage them.

How do our emotional tears affect the way we are treated? We tested whether tears, paired with either a neutral or a sad facial expression, elicited prosocial behavior among perceivers. Participants viewed a video clip depicting a confederate partner with or without tears displaying either a neutral or sad facial expression before making a behavioral decision in one of two economic games. In a Trust game (Experiment 1), participants who played the role of the investor were more likely to share an endowment after viewing a confederate trustee with tears (paired with either a neutral or a sad facial expression) in comparison to a confederate trustee without tears. However, in a Dictator game (Experiment 2), participants who played the role of allocator were no more likely to share an endowment after viewing a confederate recipient with tears (paired with either a neutral or sad facial expression) in comparison to a confederate recipient without tears. Taken together, these findings suggest that tears increase prosocial behavior by increasing trustworthiness as opposed to generally increasing other-regarding altruistic tendencies.

Emotional tears have been proposed to represent a robust affiliative signal whose main function is to promote the willingness to help the crying individual. However, little is known about the psychological mechanisms at the basis of such responses. To investigate whether tears facilitate approach relative to avoidance tendencies, we exposed participants ( N = 77) to pictures of faces with and without visible tears, in two different approach-avoidance tasks. In the first task, participants were instructed to either move toward tearful faces and away from nontearful faces, or the other way around, by using a joystick. In the second task, participants made approaching or avoiding responses to tearful and nontearful faces by pressing buttons. The results suggest that tears facilitate behavior that reduces the distance between the observer and the crying person. However, while tears appear to promote approach relative to avoidance behavior, the current findings do not allow firm conclusions about whether tears specifically facilitate approach or rather block avoidance tendencies in observers, or whether they possibly have both effects. Findings are discussed in the context of tears' ability to act as a prosocial stimulus that signals non-aggressive intentions, as well as in the context of the functional goals that predispose humans to approach or avoid crying individuals.

Small pupils elicit empathic socioemotional responses comparable to those found for emotional tears. This might be understood in an evolutionary context. Intense emotional tearing increases tear film volume and disturbs tear layer uniformity, resulting in blurry vision. A constriction of the pupils may help to mitigate this handicap, which in turn may have resulted in a perceptual association of both signals. However, direct empirical evidence for a role of pupil size in tearful emotional crying is still lacking. The present study examined socioemotional responses to different pupil sizes, combined with the presence (absence) of digitally added tears superimposed upon expressively neutral faces. Data from 50 subjects showed significant effects of observing digitally added tears in avatars, replicating previous findings for increased perceived sadness elicited by tearful photographs. No significant interactions were found between tears and pupil size. However, small pupils likewise elicited a significantly greater wish to help in observers. Further analysis showed a significant serial mediation of the effects of tears on perceived wish to help via perceived and then felt sadness. For pupil size, only felt sadness emerged as a significant mediator of the wish to help. These findings support the notion that pupil constriction in the context of intense sadness may function to counteract blurry vision. Pupil size, like emotional tears, appears to have acquired value as a social signal in this context.

Vociferous, shrill, and piercing-the first cry of the newborn infant signals that a new and separate life has begun. Separated from the body of the mother, the newborn cry serves to call for care, support, and protection. Yet, what is it that is expressed in the first cry? Or is the cry not really a matter of expression at all? In what sense may the cry be meaningful? Although we may be able to explain the function of the cry, we are puzzled by the enigma of its meaning. In this study, the science of the first cry is complemented with its physiognomy and genesis. It asks how the primal inceptuality and elemental sensibility of the first cry may be qualitatively explored and understood on the basis of what we have learned from embryology, neonatology, and related medical research. The phenomenological physiology of the first cry of the newborn challenges us to cautiously speculate on its significance for the health sciences, the adult, and the child.

A new non-pharmacological method of distraction was tested with 57 children during their annual flu vaccination. Given children's growing enthusiasm for technological devices, a humanoid robot was programmed to interact with them while a nurse administered the vaccination. Children smiled more often with the robot, as compared to the control condition, but they did not cry less. Parents indicated that their children held stronger memories for the robot than for the needle, wanted the robot in the future, and felt empowered to cope. Grief behaviors of 17 elderly persons with dementia living at nursing homes were observed. When compared with bereaved with normal cognitive ability, both similarities and differences were found. Similarities seemed to exist for irritability, lost appetite, increased sedative medication, bodily complaints, less physical activity, and less interest in happy events. Differences were found, for example, social activity, as they did not isolate themselves. The workload of staff increased when a caretaker was bereaved. Repeated information to the patients with dementia about the loss, their seeking for the dead and crying outbursts remembering the loss, and the need of comfort was common, although several had their loss more than months ago. Proper interventions including facilitating programs for both staff and caretakers are recommended, as also a larger study group.

Although much has been written about the healing power of tears, the research into this phenomenon has been fragmented, uncoordinated, and inconclusive. Nonetheless, a substantial amount of the literature across multiple disciplines has addressed the subject, both directly and indirectly. In this article, the authors submit crying that heals (CTH) as a concept of possible significance to health care and evaluate CTH using the criteria for concept evaluation proposed by Morse, Mitcham, Hupcey, and Tasón (1996). Using these criteria, CTH is tentatively defined, and its characteristics, boundaries, preconditions, and outcomes are proposed and examined in the context of this definition. In this article, the authors analyze the concept of professional vulnerability, as it relates to crying and the nursing profession. The span of potential professional vulnerability extends through all the nursing clinical, academic, and research environments. A dimensional analysis is the method used to analyze systematically how the concept of professional vulnerability is socially constructed and contextually situated in nursing. Professional vulnerability is demonstrated to have both negative and positive significances. Nurses' construction of vulnerability as a strength makes a significant difference in providing effective, positive holistic care. The objective of this analysis is to challenge the conventional views toward emotional and moral vulnerability in particular, leading to a holistic vision of hope and encouragement to benefit the future of nursing., (© 2011 The Author(s))

The concept of manliness related to the phenomenon of crying can be better understood by tracing the roots of the language of manliness through history. A Bourdieusian theoretical approach is used, incorporating the analytics of habitus, bodily hexis, and symbolic violence. This less-studied phenomenon of crying is investigated from a holistic, biopsychosocial framework. Manliness is a social construct that has remained surprisingly consistent throughout history. The importance of this concept to physical, psychological, and social health and well-being is addressed from a holistic nursing perspective. This is a timely issue for men's mental health, for example, that of returning combat veterans experiencing loss, grief, and posttraumatic stress. This exploration provides insight for nursing by analyzing the concept of manliness, which stems largely from militaristic roots, and might present obstacles to emotional release., (© 2011 The Author(s))

Emotional tears may be uniquely human and are an effective signal of distress in adults. The present study explored whether tears signal distress in younger criers and whether the effect of tears on observers is similar in magnitude across the life span. Participants rated photographs of crying infants, young children, and adults, with tears digitally removed or added. The effectiveness of tears in conveying sadness and eliciting sympathy was greatest for images of adults, intermediate for images of children, and least potent for images of infants. These findings suggest that the signal value of tears varies with the age of the crier. The results may shed light on the functional significance of crying at different stages of human development.

To explore how people experience grief and what factors are perceived as facilitating successful grief work, a survey was distributed to people who had completed a grief recovery course. The results showed that emotions, cognitions, physical expressions, and behaviors all characterize grief, but that emotions are the most central component. The course brought relief and was regarded most favorably by those having at least 1 year between the grief trigger event and participation in the course. Writing a letter in which course participants express their feelings to the loss object was perceived as the most successful aspect of the course. The letter might help with grief recovery by bringing aspects that have not been dealt with into conscious awareness.

This study sought to provide a comprehensive picture of maternal conceptualization of Perceived Insufficient Milk (PIM) using qualitative methods (semistructured interviews, free lists, and rankings) in Mexico. Two hundred and seven first-time mothers of infants younger than 6 months and mothers-to-be who were (or intended to be) breastfeeding were interviewed in waiting areas at a hospital and a health clinic in Mexico City, Mexico, from September 2000 to January 2001. Pattern searching and triangulation of the 3 qualitative methods indicated that women viewed crying as the chief symptom of PIM. Maternal diet and liquid intake were cited as both the most salient causes and treatments for PIM. The main coping strategy in the event of PIM was formula feeding. These findings highlight the need for addressing maternal concerns in relation to PIM, especially regarding the role of crying as the initiator of the PIM cycle.

Excessive infantile crying is a widespread problem which exerts a serious impact on families' lives. The prevalence, cause, and treatment of the problem have been addressed in the literature for many years but with varying degrees of success. Variation in definition of excessive crying leads to difficulty when comparing results between studies. Flawed method and inadequate sampling characterise many studies in this field, often seriously limiting the usefulness of the findings. Progress has been made in some aspects of excessive crying, and other approaches hold promise of success, but wide gaps remain with regard to cause and treatment.
