In recent years, the Western online beauty community has been embroiled in multiple racist scandals that have resulted in callout campaigns against various influencers and cosmetic companies. Through a multiplatform discourse analysis of two such scandals, this project explores how influencers, brands, and audiences utilize the affordances and norms of social media platforms to manage their roles and relationships throughout these callout campaigns. Four key strategies emerge: curation, critique, reframing, and silence. Despite the efforts of some audiences and influencers, these four strategies elided the broader social implications of brand and influencer racism as members of the community responded to the drama more than they critiqued the marginalization of people of color. Overall, this project provides insight into the dynamics at work in callout campaigns, theorizing the ways in which actors work to balance visibility, risk, labor, and control.

While the Church and the Christian Academy share a common mission, the relationship between the two has had challenges. This article, based on plenary sessions offered at the 2022 SPCE Conference in San Diego, CA, addresses three questions regarding why this relationship has suffered in recent years. The article closes with recommendations for ways schools can rebuild a healthy relationship with the church.

Classroom observations remain the predominant data source used in teacher evaluations, but little is known about how rater characteristics may affect teachers’ scores. For special educators, whose instructional practice requires specialized knowledge and skills, school administrators (i.e., the raters) without experience in special education teaching may not be able to provide reliable and unbiased scores. This study included three school administrators who viewed and scored the classroom teaching of 19 special educators in California and Idaho; individuals with special education teaching experience also scored a subset of the instructional lessons. Generalizability study analyses revealed that the school administrators were not consistently reliable scorers of the special education teachers’ instruction. The school administrators were also more lenient on average in their ratings than peer teacher raters. Findings from this preliminary investigation suggest that rater background may matter, and future studies should explore how specific rater characteristics such as background and experience affect special educators’ performance ratings.

This article explores how parish members in the later medieval era in England learned the Christian faith through a variety of means (e.g., preaching, liturgical calendar, art, music, poetry, drama, confessional instruction, spiritual kinship relationships, catechetical instruction) with an eye on what we might learn from this era that could strengthen the church's educational ministry efforts in the present.

In this study, the authors examine the impact of a community service learning course on undergraduate students’ decisions to pursue careers as special education teachers or related service providers. Participants ( N = 134) completed a course involving volunteer service with persons with disabilities in the local community and were surveyed as to whether they were interested in pursuing a career in special education upon graduation. Findings indicated that contact with a person with a disability through community service learning was a factor in influencing participants’ willingness to enter the field of special education.

Recent theological work on foundations of Christian education has explored a wide range of important systematic theology topics (e.g., sanctification, ecclesiology, pneumatology, Trinity, the nature of Scripture). An area that has not received much attention is eschatology. How do understandings of Christ's promised return impact the focus of educational ministries in the church? What is important for us to learn in this time of waiting? This paper focuses on biblical images and themes associated with waiting for Christ's return and key issues that should have an impact on Christian educators' ministry efforts. It explores how eschatological views give direction and shape to the church's teaching ministries.

Various visual arts were used in churches throughout the Middle Ages to instruct and form the spiritual lives of those who worshiped in them. In an increasingly “post-literate” culture, what might we learn from the didactic use of the visual arts by the church in the medieval era that would strengthen our teaching today? This article focuses on wall painting, the most common form of visual art in medieval sanctuaries.

Mental status examinations of individuals applying for disability are most often authorized as “2-hour” evaluations and are to include a complete clinical and employment history, assessment of neurocognitive functions, an estimate of general level of intelligence, psychological and social adjustment, functional abilities, and a complete multipage report of the results. In the interest of meeting these demands we have been using the Nevada Brief Cognitive Assessment Instrument (NBCAI) to rapidly estimate verbal intelligence, and we have adopted the Saint Louis University Mental Status Examination (SLUMS) to investigate neurocognitive functions. Areas of correspondence and differences between these screens are presented along with an explanation of why execution of both screens could be useful in addressing psychological questions concerning disability. The two instruments failed to correlate significantly in a group of patients undergoing pre-surgical evaluation likely because this sample was more highly educated and more homogeneous than the sample of disability referrals. For example, although the ages of the samples were close (disability sample mean and standard deviation age: 43.88 and 11.35 years; pre-surgical sample mean and standard deviation age: 46.14 and 2.84 years), they differed considerably in level of education (disability sample mean and standard deviation: 11.03 and 2.15; pre-surgical mean and standard deviation: 15.22 and 2.84). The pre-surgical group had mean performances close to the ceiling levels of both instruments.

Baptismal theology and practices have always had a major influence on the educational efforts of the church, either setting expectations for those who are to be baptized or establishing requirements of instruction for children following their baptism. This article addresses the changes in baptismal theology and practice during the early and medieval church eras and their influence on the educational ministries of the church, particularly with children. This article seeks to establish the biblical and theological foundations for teamwork and team leadership for ministry practice. In order to understand and evaluate the applicability of a ministry team approach, selected models of team leadership in both the Old and New Testaments are explored. Some biblical concepts including love, unity, and the image of the body, together with concepts such as co-laborer, plurality of leadership, shared leadership, and servant leadership, are also explored. The models and concepts reviewed show key elements and spiritual principles for leading ministry teams. Scriptures clearly depict teamwork through the practice of loving each other and living in the unity of the Spirit to the building up of the body of Christ. Therefore, a ministry team approach structured upon biblical and theological foundations should help the church to work together harmoniously and corporately as intended by Jesus Christ, the founder and head of the Christian church.

A summary report on the first phase of a study of Christian Education preparation programs in Bible Colleges, Christian Liberal Arts Colleges, Seminaries, and Graduate Schools in North America. This report examines the number, purposes, names, and requirements of these programs and what they are equipping students to do upon graduation.
