As a lexical concept, slum has been widely criticized by twenty-first-century researchers, but the formulation and spread of the concept have profoundly altered actual cities in many parts of the world since the early twentieth century. Examining the discursive history of the slum concept demonstrates the contribution literary studies focused on the city can make to urban history. Urban historians concerned with areas labeled as slums would benefit from problematizing the concept of slum as well as from establishing comparative histories of stigmatized urban zones in a planetary context. Such work leads to a definitional challenge in which undesirable conditions do need labeling in some way, but the challenges and materialities of different cities on different continents are also all unique and potentially damaged by the application of an overarching tag such as slum. In various ways, the contributions to this special feature all address the foregoing issues.

A constraints-led approach (CLA), based on an ecological dynamics rationale for athlete learning and development has been applied to analyses of individual and team sports. To date, such an approach has yet to be applied to the learning of coaches. Here, we propose how applying a CLA in education and professional development programmes can shape emerging behaviours of coaches as they interact with constraints of representative environments to adapt their practice. A core concept within ecological dynamics for coach education is the conceptual differentiation between knowledge of (direct perception) and knowledge about (indirect perception) the environment. Current coach education and development practices focus primarily on the acquisition and transmission of knowledge about, which over-relies on provision of (abstract) verbal and visual augmented corrective information found in manuals. Reconsidering coaches’ behaviours as emerging under constraints provides a coach developer opportunities to identify and manipulate key individual, environmental and task constraints. This approach guides attention to relevant and alternative affordances (opportunities for action) when coaching, and promotes continuous self-regulation of coach learning, supported by an experienced mentor. Learning to coach through a CLA could result in an extensive appreciation of multiple sources of knowledge, resulting in a continuously deepening fit between the coach and their performance environment. An ecological perspective of a coach learning to adapt to the constraints of a performance environment offers an alternative to current formalised coach development practice.

We seek to completely revise current models of airborne transmission of respiratory viruses by providing never-before-seen atomic-level views of the SARS-CoV-2 virus within a respiratory aerosol. Our work dramatically extends the capabilities of multiscale computational microscopy to address the significant gaps that exist in current experimental methods, which are limited in their ability to interrogate aerosols at the atomic/molecular level and thus ob-scure our understanding of airborne transmission. We demonstrate how our integrated data-driven platform provides a new way of exploring the composition, structure, and dynamics of aerosols and aerosolized viruses, while driving simulation method development along several important axes. The COVID-19 pandemic dramatically reshaped the labor market, especially for service sector workers. Frontline service sector workers, already coping with precarious working conditions, faced proximate risks of COVID-19 transmission on the job and navigated new workplace safety measures, including masking, social distancing, and staying home while sick, all in a polarized political environment. We examine polarization in the effects of COVID-19 workplace safety measures on workers’ feelings of safety and well-being. Specifically, we examine how support for former President Trump moderates the relationship between COVID-19 safety practices (masking, social distancing, staying home while sick) and workers’ feelings of safety and well-being. To do so, we draw on novel data collected by The Shift Project from 2,039 service sector workers at 89 large firms during the COVID-19 pandemic. We find that workplace safety measures are positively associated with workers’ self-assessments of feeling safe and with mental health, but only for Biden voters.

Many adopted children face challenges at school and college which adversely affect their experience and attainment. Without effective post-adoption support, they are at an increased risk of being excluded from or opting out of education. While this has been confirmed by research, there has been less discussion of the problems children face and the services they find helpful. This is especially the case for those over the age of 16 (the statutory school leaving age in the UK). To explore this, semi-structured interviews were conducted with five adopted young people aged between 16 and 19. A thematic analysis of their responses identified four factors that help them continue in post-16 education: (1) a positive self-identity; (2) supportive people; (3) supportive approaches; and (4) supportive systems. Participants identified the benefits of staff appreciating the needs of adopted children and the features that promote an ‘adoption-friendly’ ethos in schools and colleges. The implications of these observations for understanding the educational needs of adopted young people, practice development and future research are discussed. Attention is drawn to the importance of multi-agency work and the role of adopted young people in steering and co-producing effective support in educational settings.

State highway agencies (SHAs) are required by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop Transportation Asset Management Plans (TAMP) in which the performance targets for roadway assets are determined. FHWA also developed national performance metrics to use in determining performance targets for pavements. However, for pavement assets, most SHAs employ their own performance metrics for pavement condition data reporting and performing maintenance and rehabilitation (M&R) analysis. Therefore, there is a need to incorporate national performance measures into SHAs’ pavement management system to support the development of TAMP. In this study, new pavement performance metrics were proposed to assist SHAs in conducting M&R analysis. The relationships between the new metrics and existing pavement metrics used in the State of Tennessee were investigated. Comparison between the new metrics and the State’s metrics was made with reference to network-level condition summary and performance prediction models. Results indicated that the new performance metrics appeared to be stable and less sensitive to sectioning method. Similar time-series patterns of network-level performance deterioration were found between the State’s metrics and the new metrics. It is recommended that performance models be established based on the new metrics, as the deterioration rates from the two metrics were not well correlated.

OBJECTIVES: Those who work in health care organisations are a potentially valuable source of information about safety concerns, yet failures of voice are persistent. We propose the concept of 'voiceable concern' and offer an empirical exploration. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study involving 165 semi-structured interviews with a range of staff (clinical, non-clinical and at different hierarchical levels) in three hospitals in two countries. Analysis was based on the constant comparative method. RESULTS: Our analysis shows that identifying what counts as a concern, and what counts as a occasion for voice by a given individual, is not a straightforward matter of applying objective criteria. It instead often involves discretionary judgement, exercised in highly specific organisational and cultural contexts. We identified four influences that shape whether incidents, events and patterns were classified as voiceable concerns: certainty that something is wrong and is an occasion for voice; system versus conduct concerns, forgivability and normalisation. Determining what counted as a voiceable concern is not a simple function of the features of the concern; also important is whether the person who noticed the concern felt it was voiceable by them. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding how those who work in health care organisations come to recognise what counts as a voiceable concern is critical to understanding decisions and actions about speaking out. Surface cracking is a major type of pavement distress that is of interest to pavement engineers. Cracks are generally categorized in relation to patterns, orientations, and locations. Each type of crack is associated with one or more failure modes of pavements. Accurately detecting and rating surface cracks is crucial in pavement condition surveying. Currently, many State Highway Agencies employ automated survey methods to collect pavement condition data at network level. As network-level pavement evaluation is based on a single run, the traditional way of characterizing data variation based on multiple runs is no longer valid. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce a new method to evaluate the variability of pavement condition data at the network level. In this study, the variability of network-level surface crack data was evaluated by means of network-level sample parallel tests. The parallel test was conducted from 2018 to 2020 using two vehicles equipped with identical automated survey systems which consisted of a 3-D imaging system and automated distress identification system. A matrix-based method was proposed to evaluate the variations of crack data obtained from two testing vehicles. Crack data investigated in this study included fatigue cracks, longitudinal wheel-path and non-wheel-path cracks, and transverse cracks. Results indicated that change of testing speed could potentially influence the variation of automated crack data. The variations between severity levels for fatigue cracking were higher than other types of cracks. The variation of crack data decreased with the increase of reporting intervals.

We used time-varying effect modelling of two very large samples of fourth-grade students ( Nreading = 148,240, Nmathematics = 152,220) to investigate associations between adoption and over-time implementation of a de facto cap on special education service receipt and over-time likelihoods of disability identification from 2003 to 2017 for Texas students including those from historically marginalized communities. Following the cap's adoption, Texas students who are Black or English Language Learners (ELLs) were gradually less likely to have been identified as having disabilities than students in adjoining statues who are Black or ELLs in analyses adjusting for individual academic achievement, family economic disadvantage, school fixed effects, and other explanatory factors. Findings provide additional evidence of the cap's specific associations with disability identification disparities for demographic populations especially likely to have experienced violations of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act's Child Find and free and appropriate public education requirements.

In the recent COVID-19 pandemic, a wide range of epidemiological modelling approaches were used to predict the effective reproduction number, R(t), and other COVID-19-related measures such as the daily rate of exponential growth, r(t). These candidate models use different modelling approaches or differing assumptions about spatial or age-mixing, and some capture genuine uncertainty in scientific understanding of disease dynamics. Combining estimates using appropriate statistical methodology from multiple candidate models is important to better understand the variation of these outcome measures to help inform decision-making. In this paper, we combine estimates for specific UK nations/regions using random-effects meta-analyses techniques, utilising the restricted maximum-likelihood (REML) method to estimate the heterogeneity variance parameter, and two approaches to calculate the confidence interval for the combined estimate: the standard Wald-type and the Knapp and Hartung (KNHA) method. As estimates in this setting are derived using model predictions, each with varying degrees of uncertainty, equal-weighting is favoured over the standard inverse-variance weighting to avoid potential up-weighting of models providing estimates with lower levels of uncertainty that are not fully accounting for inherent uncertainties. Both equally-weighted models using REML alone and REML+KNHA approaches were found to provide similar variation for R(t) and r(t), with both approaches providing wider, and therefore more conservative, confidence intervals around the combined estimate compared to the standard inverse-variance weighting approach. Utilising these meta-analysis techniques has allowed for statistically robust combined estimates to be calculated for key COVID-19 outcome measures. This in turn allows timely and informed decision-making based on all available information.

Providing feedback on student work is a key part of the teaching process. Ideally, students use the provided feedback to learn and improve future work. In the age of technology-mediated learning, it is essential to study how technology affects the feedback process. This work uses data captured by a Learning Management System (LMS) to measure whether students view the feedback provided by an instructor. Unfortunately, the data show that only a limited number of students actually viewed the provided feedback. A technology-focused review of the feedback process is used to identify how technology may contribute to students’ limited use of feedback. Suggestions are offered for how instructors, pedagogy researchers, and developers of technology used in learning can collaborate to ensure that technology supports the best pedagogical practices identified by research and also provides the tools and data needed to support ongoing pedagogical research.

This paper presents the most rigorous meta-analysis undertaken to date of empirical literature examining antecedents and outcomes related to psychological capital (PsyCap), and moderators of these relationships. We investigated seven leadership styles as antecedents of PsyCap (authentic, ethical, servant, empowering, transactional, transformational, and abusive leadership), five outcomes (burnout, turnover intentions, work engagement, performance, and satisfaction), and the impact of four moderators (country of sample origin, cultural characteristics, industry type, and research design). Our analysis of PsyCap research (2007–2020) examined 244 studies (254 independent samples and over 96000 participants), which is over twice as large as previous PsyCap meta-analyses. To optimize the quality and reliability of findings, we corrected for artefacts and included heterogeneity, sensitivity, and publication bias analyses. Our results provide several new findings beyond previous PsyCap meta-analyses. We found that empowering, servant, transformational, and transactional leadership were all positively associated with PsyCap, with empowering and transformational leadership being the strongest antecedents of PsyCap and abusive and transactional leadership being the weakest. The findings demonstrated PsyCap was positively associated with work engagement, and negatively associated with burnout. Country of sample origin moderated all the relationships, except for servant and transactional leadership. Additionally, cultural characteristics (e.g., power distance, masculinity, long-term orientation, and uncertainty avoidance) moderated several conceptual relationships. Study design was also found to moderate the PsyCap—work engagement relationship. Collectively, these findings offer new and extended insights into the antecedents, outcomes, and moderators related to PsyCap, beyond previous meta-analyses. The theoretical and practical implications of these new findings are also discussed.

RationaleOccupation-based practice in the neonatal intensive care unit may be impacted by a plethora of contextual factors. There is limited literature of the lived experience mothers have with mothering occupations for the care of premature infants in a Level-IV neonatal intensive care unit.MethodologyA phenomenological design was used to interview mothers of premature infants in a Level-IV neonatal intensive care unit. The eight participants were mothers who had been in the neonatal intensive care unit for at least 1 month. Data was obtained via demographic form, two individual semi-structured interviews for each mother, and fieldnotes.ResultsThematic analysis yielded five themes and two subthemes which were: unanticipated journey to becoming a mother, emotional rollercoaster, mother’s lost voice, subtheme cultural influences, roadblocks to mothering, unexpected layer to mothering occupations and subtheme support for mothering occupations. Each theme described a mother’s experience with mothering.ConclusionThere is an importance for neonatal occupational therapists to provide support for mothering occupations for mothers from a variety of demographic and cultural backgrounds. Occupation-based practice in the neonatal intensive care unit continues to need attention for inclusion of all mothers. The findings showed that cultural humility should be practiced in family-centred care in the neonatal intensive care unit.

This paper introduces a new design concept for morphing aircraft skins which combines three key design principles to create compliance-based morphing structures that are capable of large morphing deformations. These skins take advantage of additive manufacturing methods and thermoplastic elastomers of different stiffnesses to allow for strategic placement of stiffness and compliance, taking advantage of geometric anisotropy and design scaling laws to create better compromises between the need for low in-plane stiffness to reduce actuation energy and high out-of-plane stiffness to resist aerodynamic loads. The three design principles are first introduced, after which design possibilities for a family of different morphing components based on these principles are explored. Initial prototypes are shown, and a range of considerations related to manufacturing, design, and integration are discussed. Finally a multiobjective design optimization study using low fidelity models of the skin structures shows some of the potential advantages of this approach.
