Limited research has been conducted on migrants' decision making factors in transit and this is an important area of investigation that goes beyond the origin-destination country dichotomy most commonly represented in migrant decision making. This paper examines the decision making factors for onwards migration or stay of migrants from Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, and Syria in Greece and Turkey. This paper is based on a unique dataset of surveys collected with 1056 migrants in Athens and Istanbul from May- July 2015. The decision for onwards migration or stay is examined through a probit regression analysis. Four categories of influencing variables are discussed: the country of origin, current conditions in the transit country, the initial migration destination choice and previous onwards migration attempts. The results demonstrate that first; the majority of respondents in both countries seek to migrate onwards (75% in Greece and 63% in Turkey) and that conditions in the transit country are highly significant in influencing onwards migrate decisions including their current subjective living conditions, employment, experiences of abuse, and speaking the local language. This paper examines biopolitical control practices at the Greece-Turkey borders and addresses current debates in the study of borders and biopolitics. The Greek and Frontex authorities have established diverse surveillance mechanisms to control the borderzone space and to monitor, intercept, apprehend, and push back migrants or to block their passage. The location of contemporary borders has been much debated in the literature. This paper provides a nuanced understanding of borders by demonstrating that while borders are diffusing beyond and inside state territories, their practices and effects are concentrated at the edges of state territories--ie, borderzones. Borderzones are biopolitical spaces in which surveillance is most intense and migrants suffer the direct threat of injury and death. Applying biopolitics in the context of borderzones also prompts us to revisit the concept. While Foucault posits that biopolitics is the product of the historical transition away from sovereign powers controlling territory and imposing practices of death towards governmental powers managing population mainly through pastoral, productive, and deterritorialized techniques, the case of the Greece-Turkey borderzones demonstrates that biopolitics operates through sovereign territorial controls and surveillance, practices of death and exclusion, and suspension of rights. The aim of this study is to investigate the user requirements of individuals with blindness regarding the information to be mapped on audio-tactile maps of city centers and neighborhoods/residential areas. Beyond that specific scope, this study aims at covering a wider research gap. That is, the investigation of the usefulness that individuals with blindness attribute to different spatial information (items) of differentiated environments: city centers and neighborhoods/residential areas. A total of 115 adults with blindness took part in the research. Participants came from four countries: Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, and Germany. The researchers listed 222 pieces of information concerning city centers and 226 pieces concerning neighborhoods/residential areas and address them in survey by conducting two respective questionnaires. Participants were asked to evaluate the information regarding the usefulness of the information with regard to safety, location of services, and orientation/wayfinding during movement. The result of the study is the definition of the most useful information that should be included in orientation and mobility (O&M) aids. Thus, the findings of this study will be particularly important for designers of O&M aids, O&M specialists, rehabilitation specialists, and teachers who design and construct O&M aids for their students with blindness. The present article provides an overview of the best-selling apps for the age range of 0-8 years under various categories, including 'Kids', 'Books', 'Educational games', 'Family games' and 'Word games' in the two major application stores (Google Play and iTunes App Store) in four economically diverse European countries: Hungary, Turkey, Greece and the Netherlands. As tablets seem to be a substantial part of children's leisure activities, and thus apps might play an important role in their development, we conducted a content analysis to highlight two issues: the educational value of the most popular children's apps and the fine-tuning of apps to the local culture and language of non-English speaking countries. There is a large overlap between the bestselling apps in the four countries; in fact, half of the apps appear among the most popular lists in more than one country. Consequently, most children's apps do not include any oral language and, if they do, they are not available in the local language. Furthermore, the results show that a substantial part of the apps supported early literacy skills. In the majority of apps teaching literacy, although advertised for the youngest, the focus of instruction was more suited for school-age children. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The creation of a national and unified legal system was an important aspect of the rise of the modern state and national citizenship. However, this interpretation of legal rationalization has been challenged by sociologists of law such as Eugene Ehrlich (1862-1922) who claimed that this juridical theory of state-centred law masked the presence of customary laws outside this formal system. In critical theories of the law, legal pluralism is proposed against the idea of legal sovereignty or legal centralism. In this article we explore the implications of the growth of the Shari'a as an example of legal pluralism. We take Turkey and Greece as two interesting but different examples of legal pluralism and consider the implications of these case studies for debates about liberalism, multiculturalism and citizenship in multi-faith societies. Among welfare programmes public pension schemes have been particularly subject to cost-containment. Various countries have been exposed to relatively similar pressures such as ageing populations or growing unemployment. The literature on comparative welfare states tends to highlight the significance of domestic factors in mediating the influence of these pressures. This article instead explores the policy impact of international financial institutions (IFIs) including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the European Union (EU) on the reform of old-age pension systems in Greece and Turkey. It suggests that in both countries, IFIs have helped to trigger the process of reforms and to spread the global pension orthodoxy. Although the pension schemes still diverge in institutional structure and benefit provision, in both cases adoption of the pension orthodoxy of individualisation of pension rights has followed the advice tendered by the IFIs. Multimethod analysis of earthquakes’ effects in two enduring rivalries demonstrates that natural disaster can promote rapprochement, political steps toward warmer relations that make it difficult for interstate rivalry to continue. Public expression of compassion and support for rapprochement create audience costs for leaders who otherwise would maintain hostile policies toward the rival state. However, routine violence, including communal violence, discourages public support for postdisaster cooperation and rapprochement. Content analysis and time-series analysis of rivalry change in two cases, India—Pakistan and Greece—Turkey, demonstrate these phenomena, and comparative case study analysis shows that communal violence helps account for divergent outcomes between the two cases. The article first introduces the concept of mainstreaming binary oppositions in reporting the 'other', and the recent debate on media peacebuilding interventions, and then describes the organization, realization and evaluation of three joint journalism training workshops with Greek and Turkish students from the main university departments of communication of the two countries. The workshops were organized by the international non-governmental organization (NGO), Search for Common Ground, with funding from the European Commission, the Council of Europe and the USAID office in Ankara, and took place in both Greece and Turkey during the years 2000-2003. The results of this research places such peacebuilding journalism education interventions in the context of the professional culture and the other social determinants of journalism (McNair, 1998), and argues for a more holistic approach to media peacebuilding interventions, which would include the other market, political, professional and public aspects of media governance.
