Analysts claim that the demographic and economic condition of higher education are adversely affecting the academic profession and faculty careers This paper reviews the issues and problems in conceptualizations of the academic profession particularly in the division of labor into teaching and research and describes the emergence of the modern American professoriate. The paper focuses on three strands of the academic career, which have evolved at different times with different consequences for current patterns. Theories of adult and career development as they apply to faculty are criticized, and the need for and expanded sociological perspective is stressed. Finally, the consequences of and possible solutions to the unresolved combination of teaching and research in the academic profession are explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
