The article presents a study which hypothesized that immunological and virological profiles between different human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) subtypes in Uganda may be predictive measures of subsequent clinical outcome. The study found the difference in immune activation profiles between subtypes suggests antiretroviral treatment outcomes may be influenced by the infecting subtype. The study reported differences in the distribution of Pol polymorphism between subtypes A and D, supporting the premise that the distinct infecting subtype may impart differential clinical outcomes in the country.
