This article presents information on various theories in feminism. In their theorizing, feminists make certain assumptions such as; sex is the most salient variable in every society, that all societies have as part of their basic structure the division between genders, that the most important aspect of any society is its gender structure and that all societies have subordinated women. To be useful, social theory must be critical, implicitly or explicitly. To theorize means to detach oneself from the given. In sociology this means that existing social conditions or their explanations do not have granted positions. In some African societies, the more women contribute to production, the more control they have over the allocation of the product. Whenever women are gainfully employed, they gain power in the family and men lose power. The problem in society, however, is that women are usually employed in lower-paying jobs than men. A radical change in the division of labor in society would do much to undermine the division of labor in the household.
