The authors explore unique complete-count data from the 1930 Census in which a respondent's race was assigned by enumerators and "Mexican" was one of the possible responses. Census enumerators frequently and selectively assigned a non-Mexican race—predominantly "white"—to US-born individuals of Mexican ancestry. As a result, using enumerator-assigned race to identify Mexican Americans misses a sizeable fraction of the relevant population and significantly understates this group's socioeconomic attainment. The propensity for Census enumerators to identify Mexican Americans as white varied enormously across US counties, and this variation is strongly associated with both the educational attainment of US-born Mexican Americans observed in the 1940 Census and the amount of return migration by Mexican immigrants during the 1930s. Engagement and academic achievement are generally correlated among elementary school students without learning disabilities (LDs). However, it is unclear if this pattern holds for students with LDs, who have lower achievement and engagement than their peers. This study examined whether links between achievement and student-reported behavioral engagement operate differentially for students with and without LDs in a nationally representative U.S. sample (N ≈ 15,660). Multiple group path analyses demonstrated that associations between third- and fourth-grade achievement were stronger for students with LDs, compared with students without LDs. For children without LDs, engagement mediated all pathways from third-grade to fourth-grade achievement. For students with LDs, engagement only mediated the pathway from third-grade math to fourth-grade reading. Overall, our study emphasizes the crucial role of early achievement for later school success, particularly for students with LDs. The study explored the predictive role of vocational interests in work-family conflict and work-family enrichment in 271 employed heterosexual couples. We administered questionnaires measuring vocational interests, time-based and strain-based work-family conflicts and work-family enrichment. Going beyond prior studies, we (a) utilized a dyadic paradigm to examine actor and partner effects of interest types, (b) considered two characteristics of the interest profile - differentiation and elevation, and (c) simultaneously tested (dis)similarity effects. Actor-partner interdependence modelling and dyadic response surface analysis were employed. The results revealed modest negative actor effects of Investigative, Social, and Enterprising interests on various types of work-family conflict, along with positive actor effects of Social, Enterprising and Conventional interests, profile elevation and differentiation on work-family enrichment. Partner effects supported the interpersonal relevance of people-oriented interest types. The effects obtained were similar for women and men, and evidence generally spoke against the (dis)similarity effects of interests on work-family conflict or enrichment. A higher educational level in women was associated with increased work-family enrichment but also family-work conflict. This study verifies the relationship between depression and death anxiety in older adults and the moderating effect of ego-integrity on this relationship. The survey was conducted with 236 participants aged 65 years and older through a combination of online and offline surveys. The final data were analyzed using the PROCESS macro for SPSS 2.16. The main findings of this study are as follows: First, depression in old age was positively related to anxiety about death. Second, the moderating effect of ego-integrity was observed on the relationship between depression and death anxiety. Third, on examining the moderating effect of each sub-variable of ego-integrity, the moderating effect of satisfaction with one's life was observed to be significant. Conversely, the moderating effect of attitude toward life and acceptance of old age was not significant. The results of this study are meaningful in examining the moderating effect of ego-integrity on the relationship between depression and death anxiety. Furthermore, the results of this study can provide basic data for the development and application of psychological intervention programs for older adults experiencing psychological problems due to depression and death anxiety in old age. This study aims to explore the factors that influence family members in choosing the preferred place of death for hospitalized dying older patients in Taiwan. This study enrolled 100 family members. The relevant factors influencing the families' choice of the preferred place of death for older patients were family members' previous discussions with the patients about their expected place of death; patients' education levels; family members' incomes; whether they were hiring a caregiver to take care of the patients at the hospital; their degree of social support; and their family functioning. The logistic regression analysis showed that family members who had discussed the preferred place of death with the patients, and those with better family functioning, were 1.41 and 2.72 times more likely, respectively, to chose for patients to return home to die than for the patients to die in a hospital. Aims: The aim of the present study was to analyse trends in full breastfeeding for at least 4 months across socioeconomic position in Denmark over a 17-year-long period from 2002 to 2019 using parental education as the indicator of socioeconomic position. Methods: The study used data on full breastfeeding collected between 2002 and 2019 by community health nurses in the collaboration Child Health Database, n =143,075. Data were linked with five categories of parental education from population registers. Social inequality was calculated as both the relative (odds ratio) and absolute social inequality (slope index of inequality). A trend test was conducted to assess changes in social inequality over time. Results: A social gradient in full breastfeeding was found for the entire study period. The odds ratio for not being fully breastfed for at least 4 months ranged from 3.30 (95% confidence interval 2.83–3.84) to 5.09 (95% confidence interval 4.28–6.06) during the study period for infants of parents with the lowest level of education (primary school) compared with infants of parents with the highest level of education (5+ years of university education). The slope index of inequality was between −38.86 and −48.81 during the entire study period, P =0.80. This indicated that both the relative and absolute social inequality in full breastfeeding to at least 4 months of age was unchanged in the study period from 2002 to 2019. Aims: The study aimed to investigate the association between parental unemployment and grade point average and school completion in adolescence, and the importance of family cohesion, parental education, and family income in explaining these associations. Methods: Data stem from the Norwegian cross-sectional 2012 youth@hordaland-survey including 8437 adolescents (53.4% girls). Information on grade point average, school completion, parental education, and family income were retrieved from the National Education Database. Parental work status and family cohesion were assessed by adolescent self-report. Results: Adolescents with at least one unemployed parent had lower grade point averages (3.49 compared with 3.92, P <0.001) and rates of school completion (71.9% compared with 86.6%, P <0.001) compared with adolescents with two working parents. The associations between parental unemployment and both grade point average (b = −0.22, 95% confidence interval −0.32, –0.12) and school completion (odds ratio 0.59, 95% confidence interval 0.46, 0.76) partly attenuated but remained significant when taking family cohesion, parental education, and family income into account. There was a significant interaction between parental unemployment and family cohesion on grade point average, in which the positive association between family cohesion and grade point average was weaker for adolescents with unemployed parents. Conclusions: Adolescents with parents outside of the workforce are at higher risk of poorer educational outcomes than peers with working parents. Combined with the positive associations between parental education, family cohesion, family income, and educational outcomes, this underscores the importance of parents for adolescent educational outcomes, and suggests that parents and the family situation should be considered when providing academic support for adolescents who struggle in upper secondary school. Since the inception of the National Education Goals in 1989, the United States has enacted policies focused on student readiness to learn, but there is no single or clear definition of ready to learn. Education quality and access are social determinants of health. However, students do not learn well if they are not healthy. This concept analysis explores the connection between health and education across multiple domains. Utilizing the Walker-Avant method, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and the Journal of School Nursing were searched for literature related to ready to learn. Definitions were synthesized from the literature, resulting in a concept of ready to learn encompassing health and thriving at individual, family, school, and community levels. Ready to learn is the result of multiple domains working synergistically to support health and thriving across the lifespan. Parental vaccine hesitancy has been a hotly debated issue long before the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the emergence of a new vaccine during this public health crisis made even pro-vaccine individuals reconsider vaccines for their children. This scoping review was conducted to understand why parents expressed hesitancy towards the COVID-19 vaccine for children under 12 years old. The search included primary sources of evidence published in English from 2020–2022. A final 41 articles met the criteria. Overall, more vaccine-hesitant characteristics were non-white, female, lower education level, lower income, on public insurance, conservative political affiliation, younger age, and rural residence. Concerns affecting confidence in the vaccine were the risk of possible side effects and lack of trust in the development of the emergency approval of the vaccine. Background: Preventing unwanted pregnancies, achieving optimal child spacing, and improving quality of life are benefits of modern family planning (FP). This study aimed to assess modern FP use, identify the factors influencing its use and determine the barriers to FP use among women of reproductive age. Methods: A mixed-methods approach was conducted in the Iringa Region between March and July 2022. Conveniently, 368 women of reproductive age were included in the quantitative study, and 48 were purposively selected for the qualitative study based on reported barriers to using modern FP. Interviewer-administered questionnaires and interview guides were used for data collection. The factors of modern FP use were determined using multivariable logistic regression analysis. The p < 0.05 was considered to be significant. For qualitative data, all interviews were recorded and transcribed. Data were analyzed manually through thematic analysis. Results: The prevalence of modern FP use was 181 (49%). Being married (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 5.44, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.77–16.73, p =.003), parity of 6 and more (AOR = 2.43, 95% CI = 1.99–5.95, p =.052), availability of modern FP methods (AOR = 1.71, 95% CI = 1.03–2.85, p =.038), and women with primary education level (AOR = 2.99, 95% CI = 1.03–3.25, p =.001), women with secondary and higher education (AOR = 3.53, 95% CI = 1.41–4.38, p =.001), were predictors for modern FP utilization. Four main themes merged (1) individual barriers, (2) hospital barriers, (3) cultural barriers, and (4) knowledge of modern FP methods. Conclusion: The use of modern FP increases with women's education. An examination of women's experience on public transport in Bangladesh and Cambodia found that victimization does reduce perceived safety or transport use. In a cultural context where women are socialized to fear and avoid public spaces, experiencing victimization may confirm rather than change previous beliefs. Moreover, it is possible that the participants' use of public transport was driven by necessity rather than choice and that they were unable to change travel patterns in response to victimization. Gender norms have been posited to impact intimate partner violence (IPV), but there is scant evidence of the longitudinal association between community-level gender norms and IPV. Using longitudinal data on 3,965 married girls surveyed in India, we fitted mixed-effects ordinal and binary logistic regression models for physical IPV intensity and occurrence of sexual IPV. We found a 26% increase in the odds that women experience frequent physical IPV per one unit increase in greater community-level equitable gender norms. We did not find an association between community-level equitable gender norms and sexual IPV. Findings suggest that the relationship between gender norms and physical and sexual IPV differs, indicating the need for tailored interventions for different types of IPV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to identify expectations of future engagement with employment among people with spinal cord injury (SCI), the underlying dimensions of engagement, and the relationship with demographic, SCI, and educational factors with engagement scales. Self-report data on the expectation of employment in 5 years were collected and analyzed from adult participants with traumatic SCI. Principal axis factor analysis with the varimax rotation was used to identify the underlying dimensions, and OLS was used to identify the relationship of demographic, SCI, and educational characteristics with the underlying dimensions. Most participants anticipated continuing to work about the same number of hours (61%), with 40% anticipating taking on more responsibility, 38% anticipating career advancement, and only 14% anticipating voluntary retirement. Factor analysis identified two underlying dimensions: job disengagement, measured by four items, and job engagement, measured by three items. Regression analysis indicated aging and years postinjury were highly related to both factors, with greater age and years postinjury related to disengagement. Completing a bachelor's degree or higher was related to engagement. Non-Hispanic Blacks were more likely to have disengagement. Ambulatory participants were more likely to be engaged in employment. Although socioeconomic inequality has been identified as a significant factor for violence against women, the connection between these two variables has not been widely recognized and addressed in many countries. This study aims to quantify the degree of socioeconomic inequalities in intimate partner violence (IPV) in Vietnam and investigate the contribution of each determinant factor that contributes to the observed inequality. We utilized the Vietnamese National Survey on Domestic Violence against Women (N = 4,019) for the analysis. Household wealth was used as a proxy for socioeconomic status. We used a concentration index to quantify the degree of socioeconomic inequality in emotional, physical, or sexual violence and a combination of these three types of violence. We further decomposed the concentration index to identify the contribution of each determinant to the observed inequality in IPV. We found that the prevalence of IPV was significantly concentrated among the worse-off across all types of IPV and that disparities in husband's occupation (48%), women's education (39%), husband's education (38%), and class (34%) were the primary factors contributing to increased inequalities in IPV. Our results indicated that higher education and engagement in skilled jobs were highly concentrated among the better-off, creating unequal distribution of these variables across wealth. Policy could mitigate the inequality in IPV by expanding women's access to education and economic opportunities. However, interventions should target both men and women and within couples because husband's characteristics also play an important role in explaining socioeconomic inequalities in IPV. The purpose of this study is to explore the predictors of bystanders' intentions to intervene and types of intended intervention in domestic violence (DV) and sexual violence (SV) situations in South Korea. Using nationally representative data from the 2016 National Fact-Finding Survey on Gender Equality (N = 7,399) and logistic regression-based models, this study focused on two key predictors, bystander gender and attitudes about gender equality, while controlling for age, educational level, and employment status. Our findings indicated that males and females were equally likely to state intentions to intervene in both DV and SV situations. While both males and females were more likely to state that they would intervene indirectly rather than directly, females were even less likely to intervene directly than were males for both situations. Attitudes indicative of gender equality further increased the intention to intervene for DV and SV situations in multivariate models. Black pregnant and postpartum individuals are at risk for intimate partner violence (IPV), and those with a history of childhood maltreatment and IPV are even more likely to be re-victimized during pregnancy. However, it is unknown if specific types of child maltreatment predict later IPV with and without a weapon better than others. The current study sought to (i) document the prevalence of childhood maltreatment and IPV and (ii) examine the relations among types of childhood maltreatment and later IPV with and without a weapon within a sample of Black individuals seeking prenatal care at a large public hospital in the southeastern United States. Participants (n = 186; mean age = 27.2 years, SD = 5.3) completed measures assessing childhood maltreatment and IPV with and without a weapon. Approximately 68.5% of participants (n = 124) endorsed experiencing childhood maltreatment, while 42.6% (n = 78) endorsed experiencing IPV. The bivariate relations among five childhood maltreatment types (i.e., sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, physical and emotional neglect) and IPV with and without a weapon were assessed. All childhood maltreatment subtype scores—except childhood physical neglect—were significantly higher among participants who reported a history of IPV with or without a weapon compared to participants who denied a history of IPV with or without a weapon. Logistic regression models revealed childhood sexual abuse emerged as the only significant predictor of experiencing IPV with a weapon (B = 0.10, p =.003) and IPV without a weapon (B = 0.11, p =.001). For every point increase in childhood sexual abuse subtype score, the odds of experiencing IPV with and without a weapon increased by 10% (OR = 1.10, 95%CI [1.04, 1.18]) and 12% (OR = 1.12, [1.05, 1.20]), respectively. Findings suggest that screening for childhood sexual abuse may provide a critical opportunity for maternity care providers to identify individuals at increased risk for IPV victimization with and without a weapon. This article presents the first systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence and correlates of different forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) among women and men in Mexico. To identify studies, a comprehensive search strategy was developed and executed across 11 databases (Academic Search Complete, APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane CENTRAL, Embase, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, LILACS, MEDLINE, SciELO, Sociological Abstracts, Web of Science). From the 1,746 studies screened, 155 full-text articles were reviewed, and this systematic review included 27 studies involving 249,557 participants to determine the prevalence of physical, psychological, sexual, threats, and other forms of IPV, according to gender and other sociodemographic characteristics. Overall IPV prevalence was 16.4%, with significant differences across pregnant and non-pregnant women. Physical IPV prevalence was 14.7%, revealing higher rates in men (29.5%) compared to women (14.2%). Psychological IPV prevalence was 27.3% and sexual IPV was at 6.6%, with differences across evaluation periods. Threats and other IPV forms showed a prevalence rate of 14.2% and 21.5%. Meta-regression analyses included gender, education, marital status, rural residency, pregnancy, age, and evaluation period. This study demonstrates that IPV is a critical public health concern in Mexico, impacting both women and men. It shows the vulnerability of rural residents, youth, and pregnant women. However, understanding IPV complexities in Mexico requires nuanced considerations of demographic and situational contexts. The hemodialysis process can lead to positive psychological changes in patients as they cope with physical and psychosocial stress factors. Understanding post-traumatic growth and factors that may be associated is essential to increasing the likelihood of achieving positive changes in hemodialysis patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between post-traumatic growth and self-compassion levels in hemodialysis patients. The study was conducted with 83 hemodialysis patients. Data were collected using "Demographic and Clinical Characteristics Form," "Post-Traumatic Growth Inventory," "Self-Compassion Scale." Post-traumatic growth levels of hemodialysis patients were found to be moderate. The self-compassion levels of hemodialysis patients were found to be high. A statistically significant difference was found between gender, educational status, economic status, and self-compassion mean scores (p <.05). However, no statistically significant correlation was found between post-traumatic growth and self-compassion (p >.05). Noncognitive constructs such as self-efficacy, social awareness, and academic engagement are widely acknowledged as critical components of human capital, but systematic data collection on such skills in school systems is complicated by conceptual ambiguities, measurement challenges and resource constraints. This study addresses this issue by comparing the predictive validity of two most widely used metrics on noncogntive outcomes—observable academic behaviors (e.g., absenteeism, suspensions) and student self-reported social and emotional learning (SEL) skills—for the likelihood of high school graduation and postsecondary attainment. Our findings suggest that conditional on student demographics and achievement, academic behaviors are several-fold more predictive than SEL skills for all long-run outcomes, and adding SEL skills to a model with academic behaviors improves the model's predictive power minimally. In addition, academic behaviors are particularly strong predictors for low-achieving students' long-run outcomes. Part-day absenteeism (as a result of class skipping) is the largest driver behind the strong predictive power of academic behaviors. Developing more nuanced behavioral measures in existing administrative data systems might be a fruitful strategy for schools whose intended goal centers on predicting students' educational attainment. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of frailty and its predictors among Taiwanese patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). A cross-sectional study was conducted, enrolling 188 AF patients aged over 20 years from a medical center in northern Taiwan. Participants were recruited from September 1 to December 30, 2022. Structured questionnaires were used to gather data on demographics, disease characteristics, Study of Osteoporotic Fractures Index, Short Portable Mental Status Questionnaire, Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form, Chinese Version Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. Among Taiwanese AF patients, over two-thirds were at risk of frailty, with susceptibility increasing with age. Key potential predictors included sex, cognitive function, nutritional status, sleep quality, and depression, jointly explaining 47.6% of the variation, with nutritional status being the most significant. Modifiable, behavioral risk factors like occupational sitting may contribute to inflammation, an important cardiovascular risk factor. This study evaluated the association of self-reported occupational sitting with changes in c-reactive protein (CRP) and the role of sex. We examined occupational sitting and baseline CRP levels for 2889 African American participants in the Jackson Heart Study. Four multivariable linear regression models were estimated to determine the association of occupational sitting and CRP. Analyses were conducted in 2020. The mean age was 50.8 years and 61% were female. Participants who reported occupational sitting as "often/always" had CRP levels of 4.9±6.8 mg/L, "sometimes" had levels of 4.8±8.1 mg/L, and "never/seldom" had levels of 4.3±6.8 mg/L. In the unadjusted model, "often/always" engaging in occupational sitting was significantly associated with higher levels of CRP when compared to "never/seldom" (P <.05). This differed by sex with female participants who reported "often/always" occupational sitting had CRP levels of 6.0±7.6 mg/L compared to only 5.1±6.9 mg/L for "never/seldom." Neither the overall association nor the female-specific association remained statistically significant in the adjusted models. We found an association between occupational sitting and inflammation, measured by CRP. This association varied by sex but did not remain significant after fully adjusting for covariates. Assessment of the level of awareness and attitude among parents and the determinants regarding eye diseases and visual impairments in their children focusing on the importance of early screening of children to avoid amblyopia and its complications. Our study was a cross-sectional analytical study that included 368 participants in Egypt. A pre-tested self-administered (screen) e-questionnaire was used to collect data from the study participants via social media (Facebook and WhatsApp) groups. Parents' knowledge about squint, refractive errors, and nasolacrimal duct obstruction was considered high (89.03%, 77.31%, and 59.98%, respectively), while knowledge about amblyopia, cataract, retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and glaucoma was considered low (58.98%, 38.53%, 36.91%, and 34.41%, respectively). The attitude concerning going for regular eye screening, wearing spectacles, and undergoing ophthalmic surgery when needed was positive in 35.3%, 77.31%, and 65.2% of parents, respectively. Physicians, social media, and friends were reported to be the preferred sources for acquiring knowledge (78%, 40.2%, and 26.9%, respectively). Participants with higher education, working individuals, and medical professionals had statistically significant higher knowledge scores about childhood eye diseases. The levels of awareness about common pediatric eye problems and the importance of early eye screening among parents were reported to be unsatisfactory. Objective: Duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) is considered an important factor in outcome. Individual, familial and illness factors may prolong DUP. Little data on this issue is available from the country of Nepal. The purpose of the present study was to assess DUP in patients with first-episode psychosis and identify associations with patients' sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted in the department of psychiatry at Tertiary Hospital in the Eastern part of Nepal. Eighty-six patients were enrolled. ICD-10 was used to make the diagnosis. The Nottingham Onset Schedule-DUP version (NOS-DUP) was used to assess DUP. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess patients' clinical symptoms. Results: The mean (SD) DUP was 21.4 (42.1) months and median DUP was 3.0 months (IQR = 23.5). Participants from mountainous regions, those who were unemployed, having an insidious onset of illness, and patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia had significantly longer DUP (P <.005). Duration of untreated psychosis was also positively correlated with negative symptoms (r =.42, P <.001) and total PANSS score (r =.42, P <.001). Conclusion: Duration of untreated psychosis in first-episode psychotic patients was relatively long (compared to studies in other countries) and was found to be positively associated with living in mountainous regions of Nepal, being unemployed, having an insidious onset of illness, and having a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is widespread and is influenced by individual-specific factors. However, the impact of spousal sociodemographic disparities (age, earnings, education) remains understudied. Objectives: This study investigates the relationship between spousal sociodemographic disparities and women's IPV experiences in 29 developing countries in South Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East and North Africa. Design: We used a cross-sectional design, analyzing data from the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series-Demographic and Health Surveys (IPUMS-DHS). Methods: We conducted logistic regression to assess associations between spousal disparities and four forms of IPV including less severe physical violence (LSPV), severe physical violence (SPV), emotional violence (EV), and sexual violence (SV) based on spousal age, earnings, and education disparities. Results: The analysis revealed that spousal education disparities are significantly associated with increased IPV odds. Women with more educated husbands faced higher odds of LSPV (OR = 1.044, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.08; p < 0.05) and SV (OR = 1.085, 95% CI = 1.04, 1.14; p < 0.01), with no significant association for SPV or EV. Larger spousal age gaps were consistently associated with a reduced probability of all IPV forms, particularly LSPV (OR = 0.765, 95% CI = 0.72, 0.81; p < 0.001) and SV (OR = 0.656, 95% CI = 0.58, 0.74; p < 0.001). Earnings disparities also played a crucial role: women earning more than their husbands faced higher odds of LSPV (OR = 1.361, 95% CI = 1.23, 1.50; p < 0.001), EV (OR = 1.573, 95% CI = 1.42, 1.74; p < 0.001), and SV (OR = 1.624, 95% CI = 1.42, 1.86; p < 0.001). When husbands earned more, women also faced higher odds of IPV, although these associations were weaker. Conclusion: The findings underscore the need for targeted policies to prevent IPV, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, by addressing spousal disparities in age, earnings, and education to promote gender equality. Background: Many adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) report intimate partner violence (IPV), including emotional IPV and controlling behavior. Yet, few studies have examined the association between these forms of IPV and health outcomes among AGYW living with HIV. Objectives: We conducted an exploratory qualitative study to understand the contexts in which controlling behavior and emotional IPV might impact the health of AGYW living with HIV in Uganda. Design: We used a participatory action research design involving community stakeholders (health workers, program managers of non-governmental organizations serving IPV survivors, and AGYW living with HIV). Methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus groups. We analyzed data using an inductive thematic analysis approach. Results: The following four themes related to different dimensions of controlling behavior and emotional IPV among AGYW living with HIV emerged from the data: (1) age-related controlling behavior and emotional IPV; (2) HIV-related controlling behavior and emotional IPV; (3) isolation-type controlling behavior and poor HIV health; (4) financial control and poor HIV health. Embedded throughout the four themes were issues related to male partners' misuse of power. Conclusion: AGYW living with HIV experience unique forms of emotional IPV and controlling behavior that impede their ability to remain healthy. Inequitable gender norms may further increase the risk of emotional IPV and controlling behavior among AGYW living with HIV. Pediatric retinoblastoma survivors exhibit visual deficits. How these visual deficits impact reading skills is unknown. The purpose of this study is to assess reading level, reading acuity, and reading speed among retinoblastoma survivors. Parents of English-speaking retinoblastoma survivors between ages of 8 and 17 consented/assented to participate. Children completed MNRead for reading speed and reading acuity. The Gray Oral Reading Test-Fifth Edition (GORT) was administered to assess reading rate, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Five children participated in the study. Two out of five participants fell within the "Below Average" range on the GORT while 3/5 were "Average". One participant with below average performance ranked below average in all four subtests, while the other participant was below average in accuracy and comprehension only. On the MNRead, all five participants had slower maximum reading speeds and worse reading acuity than the baseline measure for their age. Four out of five participants had a higher (i,e., worse) CPS than their expected baseline measure, suggesting that these individuals may require larger print or higher magnification than their peers to achieve effortless reading. These findings suggest that retinoblastoma survivors may experience reading difficulties. Introduction: Investigating the correlation between quality of life (QoL) and academic resilience (AR) and understanding their influencing factors is crucial for adequately preparing nursing students to navigate the challenges in their future professional careers. Objectives: This research aims to investigate the relationship between QoL and AR among nursing students. Additionally, to explore factors influencing these variables from the students' perspectives. Methods: A mixed-methods design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, was conducted at a Saudi nursing college. The quantitative data were collected through a cross-sectional design, with a convenience sample of 190 students completing the Brunnsviken Brief Quality of Life Scale (BBQ) and the Academic Resilience Scale (ARS-30). Simultaneously, qualitative data were collected using open-ended questions to gain insights into the factors influencing their QoL and AR, as well as the role of nursing education. The analysis involved inferential statistics and content analysis. Results: The study revealed that Saudi nursing students reported a moderate level of both QoL and AR. A significant positive correlation indicates that AR explains around 34.0% of the variation in QoL (p < 0.005). The qualitative data identified various supportive and barrier factors impacting the QoL and AR of nursing students, and students reflected on the significant role of nursing educators and academic advising. Conclusion: The findings hold implications for interventions such as establishing supportive educational environments, enhancing academic advising, implementing resilience-building and wellness programs, peer support initiatives, and encouraging social engagement—all essential strategies to bolster nursing students' overall well-being, QoL, and AR. Background: Menstruation is a universal and normal phenomenon during the reproductive age of females; adolescence is an essential period where females are preparing and adjusting themselves to manage their menstrual bleeding safely and cleanly. Menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is an issue that is insufficiently acknowledged and has not received adequate attention among visually impaired adolescent girls (VIAGs). Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the knowledge and practice of MHM and associated factors among VIAGs of selected institutions in Rwanda. Design: This study consisted of a cross-sectional study design using a quantitative approach. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in April and May 2021 on 92 VIAGs. They were recruited from educational institutions in two Provinces in Rwanda. Voluntary participation and confidentiality were assured. Socioeconomic and demographic data, menstruation, and menstrual hygiene questionnaires were used to obtain the required information. Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences (SPSS) for Windows version 25 was used. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and logistic regressions were used for data analysis. Results: The study reached 92 respondents. The majority of the respondents, 67.4% had a poor level of menstruation and menstrual hygiene knowledge while only 32.6% had a good level of menstruation and menstrual hygiene knowledge. Also, it is confirmed that the majority of respondents, 52.1% had a good level of practice, while 47.8% had a poor level of menstrual hygiene practice. The multivariable analysis revealed that factors associated with the menstrual hygiene practice were as follows: the mother's education (odds ratio (OR): 5.979; 95% CI: [1.700–21.032]; p value: 0.005) and level of knowledge of menstruation and menstrual hygiene (OR: 0.132; 95% CI: [0.028–0.622]; p value: 0.010). Conclusion: The knowledge and practice of MHM among VIAGs were poor. Recommendations included the need for mothers to assist their daughters in improving learning and practice of menstrual hygiene, as well as the integration of MHM into school curricula. Background: Street violence has detrimental effects on cardiovascular health (CVH). However, the significance of these consequences have not been systematically evaluated. In this study, we aimed to assess the impact of fear of crime on CVH status among community-dwellers aged ≥40 years living in a rural village stricken by violence. Methods: Participants were selected from individuals enrolled in the Atahualpa Project Cohort, a population-based longitudinal study that aims to reduce the burden of cardiovascular risk factors and diseases in rural Ecuador. Fear of crime was evaluated using a structured scale. The Life's Simple 7 construct of the American Heart Association was employed to assess CVH before the escalation of violence and crime in the village (2019) and at the end of the study (2024). Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted to examine the association between the exposure and outcomes. Results: A total of 648 individuals (mean age = 57.4 ± 11.7 years; 56% women) were included. At the end of the follow-up, significant association between fear of crime levels and worsening CVH status was noted. Participants allocated to the second and third tertiles of fear of crime were 3.27 (95% CI = 2.07-5.19) and 5.46 (95% CI = 3.14-9.48) times more likely to have worsening CVH status at follow-up compared to baseline determinations, respectively. Conclusion: This study shows an aggravating impact of fear of crime on the CVH status and identifies interventional targets that may help to reduce the risk of CVH status worsening in community-dwellers living in rural settings afflicted by violence. Abortion is a safe and common medical procedure. Roughly one in four women in the United States will have an abortion before the end of her reproductive years. Because of how common this experience is and how rapidly abortion policy is shifting, understanding the relationship between abortion and women's socioeconomic futures is well worth exploring. Extant research has demonstrated that the transition to parenthood is a critical inflection point in women's socioeconomic trajectories, often leading to poorer outcomes. In this article, we connect previous sociological work elucidating mechanisms of socioeconomic stratification and gender by considering the relationship between abortion use and access and future socioeconomic outcomes such as education, income, and financial stability—as measured by several measures, including evictions, debt, ability to pay bills, and a separate index of economic instability. We use national longitudinal survey data to assess socioeconomic outcomes associated with abortion using two statistical approaches. We find that women who lived in a location with fewer abortion restrictions in adolescence, and women who had an abortion, compared to a live birth, in adolescence, are more likely to have graduated from college, have higher incomes, and have greater financial stability at two time-points over an almost 25-year period. Our results provide evidence that policy environments allowing access to abortion, and teenagers having the option to use abortion to avoid early parenthood, are important axes along which women's economic lives are shaped. Our research implies that the widespread abortion bans and restrictions in the United States are likely to lead to lower educational attainment and adult economic stability among women living under such restrictions, as compared to women in locations with better access to abortion. Care infrastructures are essential for supporting families and enabling women's participation in the labor market, but they also have implications for family income inequality. This article examines access to childcare services in the United States as a case study. We propose that market-priced childcare systems generate inequalities in how births affect mothers' contributions to family income, because they constrain post-birth labor supply for lower-income women more than for higher-income women, and aggravate family income inequality as a result. Using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) merged with state-level childcare prices, we estimate individual fixed-effects regression models for the consequences of births on family income and its proximate determinants: mothers' labor supply and earnings, and partners' labor supply and earnings. We find that childcare prices increase post-birth earnings losses for mothers without college degrees, but not for mothers with college degrees, and these losses are not compensated for by increases in partners' earnings or by income transfers. In the face of continued socioeconomic inheritance, the belief that the simple expansion of educational opportunities will create meritocratic societies has been met with skepticism. It is well documented that within expanding educational systems, class-advantaged families attempt to secure further advantages for their offspring. Conversely, for many, the modernist belief that educational expansion is a means to achieving a fairer society remains compelling. Studying trends in intergenerational occupational mobility in 40 countries from four continents, I examine whether educational expansion enhances occupational mobility, and whether such trends are counteracted by heightened persistence between social origin and destination within education groups. The results indicate that educational expansion over time, and the policies supporting it, are linked to improved intergenerational occupational mobility. Furthermore, this increased mobility through expanded educational opportunities is not negated by a strengthening of within-education elite persistence in occupational status, suggesting that occupational mobility patterns can genuinely change through educational expansion. Violence against women (VAW) is a significant public health and human rights issue, with an estimated 736 million women globally experiencing VAW. Consistent evidence demonstrates that substance use is associated with VAW and that participation in substance use treatment programs is associated with reduction in substance use-related violence. While evidence demonstrates the ability to address VAW through substance use treatment programs, less attention has been paid to geographic access to substance use programs. If these programs are geographically inaccessible, particularly to marginalized populations, many people will not get the help they need. This study seeks to explore the relationship between geographic access to substance use treatment programs on VAW. Using data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 064 study, longitudinal multilevel models were used to assess the relationship between neighborhood-level social determinants, with a specific focus on geographic access to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) certified drug and alcohol treatment programs and VAW. The study included 1910 women, ages 18 to 44, living in select geographic areas with high-ranked prevalence of HIV and poverty. The findings of this study indicate that among women who reside in census tracts with high prevalence rates of HIV: (1) substance use increases VAW; (2) VAW decreases as geographic access to SAMHSA-certified drug and alcohol treatment facilities increases; and (3) when looking at specific types of VAW, emotional and physical abuse decreases as geographic access to substance use treatment increases. Policies and programs to increase access to substance use treatment should be explored and evaluated, and more programs are needed that address the intersectionality of substance use and VAW. Sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults in South Africa face high levels of violence and poor mental health outcomes. Interventions to prevent these negative health implications are hampered by a lack of representative data among this population. This study aims to quantify the associations between three forms of violent victimization and depressive symptoms in a sub-sample of SGM drawn from a population-based cross-sectional study in Gauteng, South Africa. Data come from the sixth Quality of Life survey conducted in South Africa's Gauteng province. Brief screeners assessed childhood sexual abuse (CSA), past-year intimate partner violence (IPV), non-partner violence, and depressive symptoms. Three survey-weighted logistic regression analyses were fit to model associations between elevated depressive symptoms and CSA, past-year IPV, and past-year non-partner violence, controlling for socio-demographics (age, race, sex, area of residence, education, socioeconomic status, and recent employment). N = 1,328 SGM respondents were included. Over 40% (n = 537) reported depressive symptoms, while 17% (n = 222) reported CSA, 5% (n = 67) reported IPV, and 16% (n = 208) reported non-partner violence. CSA and non-partner violence were associated with significantly higher odds of reporting depressive symptoms (aOR: 1.51, 95% CI [1.03, 2.23]; aOR: 1.84, [1.24, 2.73], respectively). IPV was not associated with elevated depressive symptoms (aOR: 1.17, [0.64, 2.16]). In all models, employment in the past 7 days was associated with significantly lower odds of reporting depressive symptoms. Recent and childhood violence is a major burden that is associated with elevated symptoms of depression among SGM in urban South Africa. Scholars of social determinants of health have long been interested in how parent's and own education influence health. However, the differing effects of parent's and own education on health—that is, for what socioeconomic group education conveys health benefits—are relatively less studied. Using multilevel marginal structural models, we estimate the heterogeneous effects of parent's and own education over the life course on two health measures. Our analysis considers both parent's and respondent's pre-education covariates, such as childhood health and socioeconomic conditions. We find that the protective effects of college completion against negative health outcomes are remarkably similar regardless of parent's (measured by father's or mother's) education. Meanwhile, parent's education has a larger effect when the average educational level is low in the population. Our results also reveal distinct life course patterns between health measures. At a time when educational attainment in young adulthood forecasts long-term trajectories of economic mobility, better health, and stable partnership, there is more pressure on mothers to provide labor and support to advance their children's interests in the K–12 system. As a result, poor health among mothers when children are growing up may interfere with how far they progress educationally. Applying life course theory to the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to investigate this possibility, we found that young adults were less likely to graduate from college when raised by mothers in poor health, especially when those mothers had a college degree themselves. Young people's school-related behaviors mediated this longitudinal association. These findings extend the literature on the connection between education and health into an intergenerational process, speaking to a pressing public health issue—rising morbidity among adults in midlife—and the reproduction of inequality within families. A wealth of research has documented the detrimental consequences of health illiteracy and its impact on a multitude of health-related issues. Scholars across various disciplines have consistently shown that individuals with higher educational attainment, those born in the United States, and those with greater English proficiency, are more likely to exhibit higher levels of health literacy. However, the extent to which these individuals adhere to established health guidelines remains an understudied area. Therefore, we analyzed data from one of the largest cities impacted by COVID-19 in the United States, to determine whether traditional predictors of high health literacy levels translated into higher levels of vaccination intentions and vaccination doses, to protect themselves and their communities from COVID-19 related illness and death. Background: Despite nurses receiving education on how to respond during crises, the stress and demands arising from unprecedented situations, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, may affect their work engagement. Aim: To appraise and synthesize studies examining work engagement among nurses in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: It is a systematic review in which three databases were searched. Critical appraisal tools and PRISMA guidelines were used. Content analysis was performed. Ethical considerations: Ethical approval was not required for this systematic review. Findings: A total of 21 studies were included. The results were classified into three categories: (1) levels and meanings of work engagement, (2) the relationship of work engagement with various factors, and (3) measures to enhance work engagement. Conclusion: The review revealed that nurses' work engagement varied from moderate to high. Factors such as education level and work schedule flexibility influenced their engagement. Positive associations were found between work engagement and job satisfaction, intention to stay, and organizational support, while stress and workload showed negative relationships. The crucial role of health policymakers, hospital administrators, and nurse managers in acting ethically, creating favorable working conditions and fostering nurses' work engagement was emphasized. Book distribution or book provision programs that provide free books to families with young children have become increasingly popular approaches to promote home literacy practices. This qualitative study aimed to understand parents' perceptions of the implementation of a book provision program and its impact on their families' literacy practices and behaviors. Forty-three parents participated in twelve focus groups in which they were asked about the perceived benefits of participating in the program. Participant parents were born in the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America, and Africa, had spent more than five years living in the U.S., and had attained different levels of education. At home, parents spoke only English, mostly Spanish, or two different languages in addition to English. Thirty-nine percent of the parents were Black (not all of whom were African American), and 53% were Latinx. Findings suggested that parents had positive views towards the program's impact on their family's literacy practices. Specifically, Spanish-speaking families reported appreciation for learning new ways of engaging their children in shared reading. Parents considered the opportunities offered by the program, congruent with their cultural models. They believed that participating in the program allow them to be part of a community and that shared reading was a means to strengthen their relationship with their children. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the parenting behaviors and parental self-efficacy of parents of typically developing and child with an intellectual disability, considering their children's groups of with or without intellectual disability and other relevant variables. The study involved 1194 parents with children aged 3-6 years, of whom 521 parents had children with intellectual disabilities and the remaining 673 parents had typically developing children. Method: The data collection instruments used in this study were the Parental Behavior Scale Short Form and Parental Efficacy Scale. A t-test was used to compare parenting behavior and parental efficacy according to the child with or without an intellectual disability. In addition, MANOVA was used to compare parenting behavior and parental efficacy in relation to parents' level of education and to examine the possible interaction effect between these two independent variables. Results: The findings indicate that parents of typically developing children exhibit more positive parenting behaviors than parents of children with intellectual disabilities. However, the negative parenting behaviors of both groups were similar. In terms of parenting self-efficacy, parents of children with intellectual disabilities display higher self-efficacy than parents of typically developing children. The study also investigated whether there was a common effect in relation to child with or without an intellectual disability and parental education level, but no common effect was observed. The expectation of family members and society towards students has increased in recent years to perform well or achieve success in their life. But lack of job opportunities and increased competition among students has depressed the student community. The expectation without support has negatively impacted students which has catalysed suicide among the students in India. Students are committing suicide in Indian society due to failure in achieving families' expectations which is a matter of grave concern for social scientists. The current study has applied content analysis as a method to evaluate the cases of student suicide. The cases of student suicide have been collected from different newspapers, magazines, and news portals from July 2020 and April 2021. The study finds that most students are committed suicide due to depression. The study points out that students committed suicide due to failure to fulfil the expectations of a family member. Objectives: We examined associations between social activity restriction and psychological distress and well-being for caregivers of older adults with and without dementia, and if the identified associations are different for the two groups. Methods: Using data from the 2017 National Study of Caregiving, we identified caregivers of older adults with (N = 541) and without (N = 1701) dementia. Linear regression models were estimated, adjusting for caregivers' age, gender, race, education, relationship to care recipient, and self-rated health. Results: Restriction in visiting friends and family and attending religious services were associated with higher distress in dementia caregivers. Restriction in visiting friends and family was associated with higher distress and lower well-being in non-dementia caregivers. Any activity restriction had stronger association with distress for caregivers of older adults with versus without dementia. Discussion: Findings highlight the need for tailored interventions based on caregivers' perceptions of meaningful social activities and dementia-friendly communities to promote social participation. Background: Depression is a major global health concern, particularly in India, where it significantly impacts the population's well-being. The interplay of various factors, including education, employment status, and spiritual intelligence, contributes to the complex landscape of depressive symptoms among adults. Methodology: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the rural service areas of a tertiary care medical institution in rural India from March 2021 to September 2022. The study employed structured questionnaires and validated scales to assess depressive symptoms, spiritual intelligence, educational status, and occupational status among participants. Structural equation modelling was used for mediation analysis to evaluate the effect of spiritual intelligence and employment status on the association between education and depressive symptoms. Results: The study included 381 participants, with a prevalence of depressive symptoms at 14.4%. Higher educational attainment was associated with lower odds of depressive symptoms (aOR = 0.34, 95% CI [0.17, 0.67]). Employment status mediated the relationship between education and depression, with employed individuals exhibiting lower odds of depressive symptoms (aOR = 0.42, 95% CI [0.22, 0.82]). While spiritual intelligence was higher among those with formal education, its direct impact on depression was not statistically significant. The mediation analysis revealed that a significant portion (77.5%) of the total effect of education on depression was mediated through employment status and spiritual intelligence. Conclusion: The study underscores the importance of education and employment opportunities in mitigating depressive symptoms among rural adults. It suggests targeted interventions that promote education and employment support to enhance mental health resilience. Indigenous post-secondary students face cumbersome barriers to educational attainment. This article explores those barriers and presents findings from a survey of Indigenous students conducted at Algoma University in Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Canada. For First Nations' students surveyed in 2016 (n = 36), funding was identified as a major barrier and, considering that nearly half of students had dependents, finding affordable housing and childcare was a significant challenge. The transition to an urban area from living on-reserve is also difficult for many students. The Anishinaabe Initiatives Division at Algoma University hosted culturally affirming events for Indigenous students. We found this to be an effective tool universities can use to bolster student resilience and foster a sense of belonging. Aim: The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to provide descriptive data about the lifetime prevalence of trauma exposure with a particular focus on sexual violence and natural disasters and to assess the prevalence of symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the Icelandic population. In addition, the aim was to investigate whether PTSD symptoms, trauma types and prevalence differed by gender and geographical location. Method: A representative sample of the population between the ages of 18 and 80 years was randomly selected from the Icelandic National Registrar. The study included a total of 1766 participants consisting of 930 (52.7%) women and 836 (47.3%) men, with an overall mean age of 49.9 years (standard deviation 16.1). Participants were contacted by phone and asked questions from the Lifetime Events Checklist (LEC-5) to assess lifetime exposure to traumatic events. Individuals who had experienced traumatic events completed the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) to assess PTSD symptoms. Results: Exposure to trauma is common among the Icelandic population, with 84.3% of the participants experiencing at least one kind of trauma. Of those exposed to trauma, 10.5% fulfilled criteria indicating a higher risk of PTSD. The prevalence of sexual violence and other unwanted sexual experiences was relatively high (16.2% and 24.4%, respectively) compared with other national studies. Women were almost four times more likely than men to have been exposed to sexual violence (24.9% vs 6.4%), and were more likely to have been exposed to other unwanted sexual experience (35.1% vs 12.4%, respectively). Exposure to natural disasters is frequent but with great geographical variation. Conclusions: This study highlights the high prevalence of trauma in Iceland, revealing significant gender disparities in sexual violence and geographical variations in natural disaster exposure. Aim: This study examined the nexus between mother's education and nutritional status and their relationships with child stunting, wasting, underweight, and overweight. Methods: The data of 34,193 under-five (U-5) children from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and binary and complementary log-logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of child stunting, wasting, underweight, and overweight were 36.51%, 6.92%, 21.73%, and 2.05%, respectively. Compared to children born to mothers with at least secondary education, uneducated women's children (odds ratio (OR) = 1.55; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.32–1.82) and those of women with primary education (OR = 1.49; 95% CI = 1.28–1.72) were more likely to be stunted. Similarly, children born to uneducated women (OR = 1.51; 95% CI = 1.24–1.83) were more likely to be underweight than women with at least secondary education. The likelihood of child underweight (OR = 1.71; 95% CI = 1.45–2.01) and wasting (rate ratio (RR) = 1.82; 95% CI = 1.47–2.26) were higher among underweight mothers, respectively, than those with normal body mass index (BMI). The likelihood of child stunting (OR = 0.75; 95% CI = 0.67–0.84) and underweight (OR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.57–0.77) were lower among obese/overweight mothers compared to those with normal BMI, but their children were more likely to be overweight (RR = 1.77; 95% CI = 1.27–2.48). Conclusion: Attainment of higher education by mothers should be promoted to prevent childhood nutritional imbalances, and sensitization on healthy dietary habits and lifestyles should be promoted among women, especially the overweight/obese, to reduce their risk of having overweight children. Background: 'Eating out (EO)' has witnessed a significant increase across nations and in India. Understanding food behaviour from an economic standpoint is essential to recognize food systems and nutrition transition. Aim: Our work compared the macro-data on per capita income and gross state domestic product from India with household expenditure on eating out. Using the India Human Development Survey II micro-data we studied the socio-demographic and economic determinants of household expenditure on eating out. Methods: The study design is a secondary data analysis of India Human Development Survey II from a sample of N = 42,152 households. It included socio-demographic and economic predictors, such as religion, caste, residence, migration for work, education, number of household members, income source, total annual income, consumption expenditure and poverty status. Results: No consistent trends emerged in the macroeconomic comparisons using gross state domestic product and per capita income. Results of logistic regression showed that the reserved caste categories OBC [COR 1.2 (1.1–1.2)] and SC/ST/Others [COR 1.1 (1–1.1)], household heads education up to secondary [COR 0.4 (0.4–0.5)] and higher secondary and above [COR 0.7 (0.6–0.8)], urban place of residence [COR 0.55 (0.53–0.58)], organised sector [COR 0.7 (0.6–0.7)] as the income source, higher annual income [COR 0.52 (0.50–0.54)], higher annual consumption expenditure [COR 0.44 (0.42–0.46)] and above poverty line [COR 2.1 (1.9–2.2)] were significantly positively associated with expenditure on eating out (p = <0.05). All these variables stayed significant in the multinomial regression model as well. Conclusion: This analysis confirms the increase in household income along with other demographics, increases the frequency of eating out. Background: Although the COVID-19 epidemic was linked to movement limitations and a sense of risk among the general public, changes in lifestyle and mental health were not examined among Palestinians. The study aimed to investigate changes in a group of Palestinians' lifestyles and mental health. Methodology: A translated questionnaire about demographics, mental health difficulties, and lifestyle choices was created using Google Forms and distributed over social media and academic platforms. SPSS 21 was used to analyze the data. Results: The participants' mean age was 25 9 years, 67% were women, and 47% were city dwellers. About 82% had a bachelor's degree. Infection with COVID-19 was present in 13% of study group, COVID-19 infection caused the death of a relative in 13% of study group, and commitment to limits was present in 14% of study group. Negative emotions like despair, hopelessness, and worry were extremely common. Despite eating a few fruits and vegetables and drinking a lot of soft beverages, study participants were generally active. Background: Today, food insecurity is recognized as an important public health problem that can have detrimental effects on families. Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the determinants and consequences of food insecurity in families having children under the age of 2 years. Method: In this cross-sectional study, 307 mothers and their children under the age of 2 years were selected by stratified random sampling. Demographic and socioeconomic data were collected by completing questionnaires through face-to-face interview. Household food insecurity (HFI) status was determined using the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) household food security questionnaire. Results: Based on the results, 67.4% of families were high food secure. Low and very low food security was 25.7% and 6.9%, respectively. House size (Beta = −0.019, 95% CI: −0.029, −0.009), father's job (Beta = −4.758, 95% CI:−6.777, −2.738), father education (Beta = −0.370, 95% CI: −0.717, −0.023), and economic status (Beta = −0.628, 95% CI: −0.809, −0.448) were significantly related to the USDA total food insecurity score (p < 0.05). Regression analysis showed that children birth weight, father's body mass index (BMI), and mother's waist circumference had a significant positive correlation with weight for age (Z-score) of children. Children's birth weight, father's BMI, and HFI status had significant and positive correlation with weight for length (Z-score). Moreover, the significant association between children's birth height, mother's BMI, and mother's waist circumference with length for age (Z-score) were observed (p < 0.05). Conclusion: We found the father's job was the most effective factor in food insecurity and economic status of the family was in the second place. Scholars theorize that "opportunity gaps" drive achievement disparities between children born into poverty versus affluence. In a 26-year longitudinal study (N = 814), we examine (a) economic disparity in children's accumulation of opportunities—from birth through high school—at home, childcare, school, afterschool, and in the neighborhood; (b) the extent to which opportunity is linked with educational attainment and earnings in early adulthood; and (c) whether opportunity is most strongly associated with these adult outcomes for children from low-income households. We document large opportunity gaps between children from low- versus higher-income households. These opportunity gaps are strongly linked with educational attainment and earnings, particularly for low-income children, helping explain why household income in early childhood predicts these outcomes in adulthood.
