Objective: To update a systematic review of the literature on the barriers and enablers of service access and utilization for children and adolescents with a diagnosis, or symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), from the perspective of caregivers, clinicians, and teachers. Methods: Five databases were searched for peer-reviewed literature published from May 2012 to March 2023. Two independent reviewers completed a two-stage screening process and quality assessment. Results: Of 4,523 search results, 30 studies were included. Five main themes were generated: 1) Awareness of ADHD, 2) Stigma, 3) Parental choice and partnerships, 4) Education services as an integral component, 5) Referrals, waiting times, and logistics. More than half of the studies reported poor acknowledgement, expertise of ADHD, and stigma. Conclusion: Findings highlight the need for ongoing ADHD education for all involved and policy changes to service delivery systems to increase the availability of health providers with specialist ADHD expertise. Objective: To investigate the association between children's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Method: Databases were systematically searched for peer-reviewed literature published between 2010 and 2022. Two reviewers independently screened and assessed the quality of included studies. Meta-analysis was conducted for studies that used the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). Results: Twenty-three studies were included, with most rated as "good" quality. Meta-analysis found "very large" effect in both parent- (Hedges' g −1.67, 95% CI [−2.57, −0.78]) and child-reported (Hedges' g −1.28, 95% CI [−2.01, −0.56]) HRQoL for children with ADHD compared to children without ADHD. No difference between parent- and child-reported HRQoL in children with and without ADHD was found. However, parent-reported HRQoL was lower than child-reported HRQoL among children with ADHD. Conclusion: ADHD was associated with substantially poorer children's HRQoL. Among children with ADHD, parents rated their children's HRQoL lower than the children themselves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Poorer mental health in adulthood is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease and reduced life expectancy. However, little is known of the molecular pathways underpinning this relationship and how early in life adverse metabolite profiles relate to self-reported variation in mental health. We examined cross-sectional associations between mental health and serum metabolites indicative of cardiovascular health, in large Australian population-based cohorts at two stages of the life-course. Methods: We characterised cross-sectional serum nuclear magnetic resonance metabolite profiles of positively and negatively framed mental health in a large population-based sample of Australian 11- to 12-year-olds (n = 1172; 51% girls) and mid-life adults (n = 1322; mean age 45 years; 87% women). We examined multiple standard self-report mental health scales, spanning psychosocial health, general well-being, life satisfaction, and health-related quality of life. Linear regression was used to investigate the cross-sectional association between mental health and each metabolite (n = 73) in children and adults separately, unadjusted and adjusted for age, sex, socioeconomic position and body mass index. Results: Better child and adult mental health were associated with lower levels of the inflammatory marker glycoprotein acetyls, and a favourable, less atherogenic lipid/lipoprotein profile. Patterns of association in children were generally weaker than in adults. Associations were generally modest and partially attenuated when adjusted for body mass index. Conclusions: In general, metabolite profiles associated with better child and adult mental health closely aligned with those predictive of better cardiovascular health in adults. Our findings support previous evidence for the likely bidirectional relationship between mental health and cardiovascular disease risk, by extending this evidence base to the molecular level and in children. The article focuses on a study which examined the early lifetime individual and population non-hospital healthcare costs associated with childhood mental health difficulties in Australia. Total Medicare costs were analyzed using data from the Longitudinal Study of Australian Children. Results of the study showed that there is an association between increased individual costs and persistence of difficulties. It also found low levels of reimbursement for mental health services in this population.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) has major affects on women’s wellbeing. There has been limited investigation of the association between type and severity of IPV and health outcomes. This article describes socio-demographic characteristics, experiences of abuse, health, safety, and use of services in women enrolled in the Women’s Evaluation of Abuse and Violence Care (WEAVE) project. We explored associations between type and severity of abuse and women’s health, quality of life, and help seeking. Women (aged 16–50 years) attending 52 Australian general practices, reporting fear of partners in last 12 months were mailed a survey between June 2008 and May 2010. Response rate was 70.5% (272/386). In the last 12 months, one third (33.0%) experienced Severe Combined Abuse, 26.2% Physical and Emotional Abuse, 26.6% Emotional Abuse and/or Harassment only, 2.7% Physical Abuse only and 12.4% scored negative on the Composite Abuse Scale. A total of 31.6% of participants reported poor or fair health and 67.9% poor social support. In the last year, one third had seen a psychologist (36.6%) or had 5 or more general practitioner visits (34.3%); 14.7% contacted IPV services; and 24.4% had made a safety plan. Compared to other abuse groups, women with Severe Combined Abuse had poor quality of life and mental health, despite using more medications, counseling, and IPV services and were more likely to have days out of role because of emotional issues. In summary, women who were fearful of partners in the last year, have poor mental health and quality of life, attend health care services frequently, and domestic violence services infrequently. Those women experiencing severe combined physical, emotional, and sexual abuse have poorer quality of life and mental health than women experiencing other abuse types. Chronic mild stress (CMS)-induced 'anhedonia' is a predictive model of antidepressant activity. We assessed the reversal of CMS-induced behavioral changes by asenapine, the antidepressant imipramine, and the atypical antipsychotics olanzapine and risperidone. Secondarily, the ability of these agents to facilitate intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) was assessed to ensure that any attenuation of CMS-induced anhedonia was not associated with an overt hedonic profile. After 2 weeks of CMS, male Wistar rats were administered asenapine (0.06-0.6 mg/kg), olanzapine (2 mg/kg), risperidone (0.5 mg/kg), or imipramine (10 mg/kg) by intraperitoneal injection over 5 weeks to examine their ability to reverse CMS-induced reductions in the intake of a sucrose solution. For the ICSS study, rats were trained to deliver an electrical stimulus to the ventral tegmental area. The effects of acute doses of subcutaneous asenapine (0.01-0.3 mg/kg), olanzapine (0.3 and 1 mg/kg), risperidone (0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg), and intraperitoneal imipramine (3-30 mg/kg), cocaine (5.0 mg/kg), or amphetamine (1.0 mg/kg) on ICSS were then examined. CMS significantly reduced sucrose intake (P < 0.001). All active agents (0.6 mg/kg asenapine, 2 mg/kg olanzapine, 0.5 mg/kg risperidone, and 10 mg/kg imipramine) reversed the effect of CMS (all P < 0.001). In the ICSS protocol, asenapine (0.01 and 0.03 mg/kg), olanzapine (1 mg/kg), and risperidone (0.3 mg/kg) impaired ICSS performance, whereas positive controls (5 mg/kg cocaine, 1 mg/kg amphetamine) facilitated ICSS. Asenapine reversed CMS-induced anhedonia without facilitating ICSS, providing support for a role of asenapine in treating bipolar disorder and aspects of negative and/or affective symptoms in schizophrenia. Infertility, or the inability to conceive or carry a pregnancy to live birth after a year or more of regular sexual relations, affects one in six couples of childbearing age. There is substantial empirical evidence that infertility is related to depression, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and identity difficulties in both men and women. Given the prevalence of infertility and increases in the number of individuals and couples who seek infertility counseling, it has become imperative that couple counselors understand the distinct and robust set of challenges faced by this population. This article provides a broad background on the state of infertility and elucidates some of the physical social and emotional responses to this experience. Gender issues, social norms, and cultural traditions are discussed when examining male and female emotional responses to infertility. In addition, this article presents a framework for appropriate assessment and diagnostic considerations related to the infertility experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
