There is mounting evidence of increased international student financial and work precarity over the last decade in Australia. Yet, there has been a little scholarly analysis of which students are most affected by precarity and its sources. Drawing on two surveys of international students in Australia's two largest cities, conducted before and during the pandemic, we investigate the financial and work vulnerabilities of international students. We demonstrate that vulnerability is related to characteristics which describe particular cohorts of students: being from low-income countries, working class families, seeking a low-level qualification, enrolled in a non-university institution, and being without a scholarship. The concepts of "noncitizenship" and "work precarity" are used to explain how the mechanisms of each characteristic heighten vulnerability, thereby contributing to a broader evidence-base about the causality of international student precarity. Cerebrovascular dysfunction is a critical component of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis. Oligomeric amyloid-β42 (oAβ42) is considered a major contributor to AD progression. However, data are limited on the role of oAβ42 in brain endothelial cell vessel degeneration/angiogenesis, including the interaction with angiogenic mediators. Thus, the current study determined the effect of oAβ42 on angiogenesis in vitro, utilizing single brain endothelial cell cultures and triple cultures mimicking the microvascular unit (MVU: brain endothelial cells, astrocytes, and pericytes). oAβ42 dose-dependently reduced angiogenesis and induced vessel disruption. Critically, epidermal growth factor prevented oAβ42-induced deficits, implicating angiogenic pathways as potential therapeutics for AD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cet article porte sur une des nouvelles les moins connues de Patrick Modiano : Dieu prend-il soin des bœufs ?, ouvrage de bibliophilie écrit en collaboration avec l’artiste Gérard Garouste. Après un court résumé de l’histoire de ce livre – variation sur le conte pour enfants traditionnel – le texte est situé dans le contexte de l’ensemble des écrits de l’auteur, afin de mettre en évidence les nombreux jeux de miroirs qui se créent. D’une part, sont mis en valeur des éléments du récit qui sont des constantes de l’imaginaire du romancier : les personnages-animaux servant de métaphores ; l’omniprésence de la Seconde guerre mondiale et de l’Holocauste ; le clin d’œil fait à l’Œdipe ; l’importance des images (contribution d’un artiste-illustrateur); les apports intertextuels. D’autre part, la spécificité de ce texte est soulignée : le fait qu’il se termine bien et sans ambiguïté, ce qui nécessite une inversion de plusieurs grands thèmes modianiens habituels. Il y a donc une concordance évidente entre la rareté de ce livre, qui est quasiment inaccessible au grand public, et la (relative) nouveauté de certains aspects de l’histoire qu’il véhicule, aspects également rares au sein de l’œuvre modianienne. Objectives: Repair of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks with grafts can be augmented with various adjuncts to improve approximation such as tissue adhesives and sutures. Here we test various adjuncts in an in vitro model of CSF leak repairs. Methods: A novel pressure testing system was designed to evaluate the burst pressures of in vitro CSF leak repairs. Porcine pericranium grafts were harvested and used to repair a 0.5 X 0.5 cm dural defect. These grafts were sealed in place with no adjunct (control). Tisseel fibrin glue (Baxter, Mississauga, ON), suture, U-CLIPs (a self-closing suture substitute; Medtronic, Toronto, ON), or combined suture and Tisseel. Tisseel samples were tested both as underlay and overlay repairs. Samples were incubated overnight in serum and subjected to burst pressure testing, and pressure-time graphs were recorded. Experiments were conducted five times. Results: Mean burst pressures (measured in pounds per square inch) for grafts sealed in place with Tisseel were significantly higher than all other adjuncts (14.9 Tisseel vs 3.9 control vs 4.1 U-CUP vs 6.2 suture psi; p < .05). U-CLIPs and sutures did not increase burst strength over controls, and sutures did not have a synergistic effect with Tisseel (12.1 psi). Grafts tested with Tisseel were stronger when tested as underlay than as overlay (14.9 vs 3.0 psi). Three patterns of graft failure were observed based on unique pressure-time graphs. It is most commonly a disease of young adult males, and reports in young females in the pediatric age group are uncommon. This paper presents the clinical history of an adolescent female who recovered from life-threatening pulmonary hemorrhage with treatment that included aggressive cardiopulmonary support combined with plasma exchange and immunosuppressive therapy.
