- Abstract
The article offers a look at the international regime for bioprospecting. Historically, the bulk of bioprospecting has been undertaken by government agents, most often collectors for botanical gardens, which today house samples of up to one-third of the world's vascular plant species, the vast majority acquired before the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) entered into force on December 23,1993. The most publicized example of modern bioprospecting is the agreement between pharmaceutical firm Merck & Co. and the nonprofit Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad.
