This study employs input–output (I/O) modeling at the state and county level to compare national estimates of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The results show that more localized economies cannot achieve the results predicted by national models likely because of leakage of economic activity outside the boundaries of a single state or county. There is a lack of scientific evidence on the impact of a biomedical industry on the surrounding economy. The assessment of this issue would allow policy makers to identify the impact on production, local employment and wages in addition to public sector costs. With this aim, the paper evaluates the socio-economic impact of a medical devices firm’s decision to set up its manufacturing plants in Italy, i.e. the effect of industrial activity on employment, earnings and output, using information on production processes to derive the associated interactions with suppliers for the primary industry and secondary industries. Besides being amongst the major contributors of health outcomes, medical technology manufacturers provide additional benefits to public sector and to the economy as a whole. This suggests that a broad perspective needs to be endorsed by policy makers when deciding about the introduction of new technologies in the healthcare sector in order to achieve optimal outcomes for society as a whole. Recent ‘best practice’ research and guidance has emphasised the important role that can be played by retail-led urban regeneration projects, particularly in ‘under-served markets’ in the UK. This builds on ideas first formulated in the USA by Michael Porter through his close relationship with the Initiative for the Competitive Inner City (ICIC). This paper critically examines the role of retailing in urban regeneration nationally and locally in the UK, focusing on in-town shopping centres located in inner city areas of the UK. The paper is based on case study research in these centres, and was completed during 2003 for The Office of Science and Technology. The paper examines how employment impact in retail-led regeneration is commonly measured, and calls for more research to determine the real impact of retail in deprived communities using other, relevant measures. The purpose of this study was to assess the economic impact of a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tournament in the Greater Lansing area of Michigan. This is the first study that has been conducted to esti mate the economic impact of an LPGA event in the United States. Spending data were collected from those who attended (fans, pros, caddies) and hosted/sponsored (Oldsmobile Classic, Walnut Hills Country Club, ESPN, tournament sponsors) the 1996 Old smobile Classic. The economic impact was evaluated by estimating the multiplier effect of the spending by those who attended and hosted/sponsored the tournament on the generation of total income and jobs in the Greater Lansing area. The spending by those who attended and hosted/sponsored the 1996 Oldsmobile Classic resulted in a total eco nomic impact of $4,930,484 which helped to create a total of 81 direct and 132 indirect jobs (which may be full or part-time) in the Greater Lansing area.
