This article uses the theoretical bases of Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale, Framing Theory, and Self-Identification theory to explore the moderating effect of destination promotional videos on the relationship between residents' empowerment and support for tourism. Initially, a large-scale survey with 1,634 respondents from Chinese Ningbo communities was performed to confirm that the destination promotion videos were widely viewed by the residents. After that, 492 questionnaires were administered to residents to test the moderating effect of media identification on the relationship between residents' empowerment and support for tourism. The findings show that, overall, promotional media moderates the relationship between resident empowerment and support for tourism. Specifically, the use of destination promotion videos has been found to give residents a stronger sense of empowerment within society, increasing their high level of support for tourism. However, in this study's case study of Ningbo, media were not found to moderate the relationship between perceived economic profit and support for tourism. Apart from the economic motive, little attention has been given to factors such as destination image and place attachment in explaining how potential differences in intentional behavior (support for tourism, intention to recommend) develop between tourism employees and non-tourism employees in a community. This study, conducted in the remote resort of Eilat, explores whether these resident groups' representations of and attachment to their place shape their intentional behavior toward tourism, and tests the explanatory ability of the two factors to account for potential differences in groups' intentional behavior. Findings suggest that the relationships between: (a) place attachment and destination image, (b) place attachment and intention to recommend, and (c) between destination image and intention to recommend, vary across the two groups. The study contributes to tourism theory by empirically validating the role of image and attachment as antecedent of such differentiation. This study investigated the structural relationships among destination social responsibility (DSR), tourism impacts (i.e., positive and negative impacts), residents’ support for tourism, and their perceived quality of life. A structural model was empirically tested with a sample of 272 residents living in the Phoenix Ancient Town in China. The results indicated that DSR enhanced residents’ perception of positive tourism impacts but did not influence their perception of negative impacts. Concurrently, DSR was found to have direct and positive effects on residents’ support for tourism and perceived quality of life. It also had indirect and positive effects on residents’ support for tourism and perceived quality of life, mediated by positive tourism impacts. While residents’ perceived positive tourism impacts increased their support for tourism and perceived quality of life, negative impacts would undermine support for tourism and proved to be disruptive to quality of life. This study develops and tests a structural model of residents’ support tourism development, with the social exchange theory as its theoretical base. The model incorporates three exogenous latent variables, namely, community satisfaction with neighborhood conditions, community commitment, and satisfaction with community services. Perceived positive and negative impacts of tourism are proposed as the mediating variables between the exogenous latent variables and the ultimate dependent variable, given as support for tourism. Eight path hypotheses are proposed and tested using a sample of 363 residents. Perceptions of tourism impacts were found to influence support for tourism development. Findings also suggest that residents’ satisfaction with neighborhood conditions and community services are important determinants of perceived positive and negative impacts of tourism. Community commitment was found not to be an antecedent of attitudes to tourism. The practical implications of the study are discussed, together with its limitations and scope for future research. This study is an attempt to help scholars and practitioners visualize the consequences of tourism development and urban residents’ support for future tourism expansion. In September 1998, 2,400 questionnaires were mailed to residents of southeastern Virginia. Three hundred sixteen useful questionnaires were analyzed. An urban tourism impact scale composed of 24 attributes was purified by a factor analysis, revealing four impact factors: Economic Benefits, Social Costs, Cultural Enrichment, and Environmental Deterioration. Using a path analysis, the relationships between tourism impacts and different levels of endorsement of tourism were exhibited. A correspondence analysis was used to further pinpoint the influences of tourism on three groups of residents with different attitudes toward tourism; these groups were categorized as supporters, moderators, and opponents.
