The article assesses the state of Russia's democracy under the authoritarian presidency of Vladmir Putin. While Russia's economy has thrived under Putin, he has steadily concentrated power in his hands and his leading opponents have mysteriously been murdered or imprisoned under trumped-up charges. Critics also allege that Russia's oil revenues are being used to silence the opposition.
