An essay is presented on the use of statistics in science and the shortcomings associated with the practice. The author asserts that the so-called scientific method that involves statistical hypothesis testing is unsound. Also noted is the tendency to misunderstand statistical test results. The article discusses an online report in the August 26, 2009 issue of "Nature." The focus of the research was the discovery by scientist Shoukhrat Mitalipov and colleagues of a way to prevent the transfer of inherited mitochondrial diseases. The team shuttled the nuclear DNA between an egg cell and donor cell to produce four healthy rhesus macaque monkeys. Topics include an overview of the role of mitochondria in disease and the team's technique which is used in human fertility clinics.
