The article focuses on the condition of Appalachia particularly its coalfield community. Topics include the pastoral letter "This Land Is Home to Me," by the Catholic bishops of the region which reflects the intransigent poverty and powerlessness of the region as part of the effort of the religious group Catholic Committee of Appalachia (CCA), the collaboration among the American priests preached on the poverty state in the country, and the success of the letter in addressing the social issue.
