A Gram-negative, motile, and rod-shaped bacterial strain, UDC354(T), was isolated from the seawater of Dokdo, Korea. The strain UDC354(T) displayed optimal growth at 30-37 °C in the presence of 0-2 % (w/v) NaCl at pH 8. Strain UDC354(T) was found to contain Q-8 and 9 as isoprenoid ubiquinones; C16:0 (22.9 %), summed feature 3 (iso-C15:0 2-OH and C16:1 ω7c) (21.4 %) and C18:1 ω7c (12.2 %) as the major fatty acids; and diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylglycerol, and phosphatidylethanolamine as the major polar lipids. The DNA G+C content was found to be 54.1 mol %. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that strain UDC354(T) belongs to the genus Bowmanella, of the family Alteromonadaceae, and is closely related to Bowmanella pacifica W3-3A(T) (95.2 %) and Bowmanella denitrificans BD1(T) (95.0 %). It was found that strain UDC354(T) is exoelectrogenic and is capable of generating 6.6 μW/cm(3) in marine broth in the microbial fuel cells. Based on the analysis of the phenotypic, chemotypic and phylogenetic characteristics, a new species, Bowmanella dokdonensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is UDC354(T) (=KCTC 42147(T)=JCM 30855(T)).

A novel agarolytic, Gram-stain negative, heterotrophic, facultatively anaerobic and pale-white pigmented bacterial strain, designated Q1(T), was isolated from the marine alga Porphyra yezoensis Ueda (AST58-103) collected from the coastal area of Weihai, China. The cells are motile by means of peritrichous flagella. The isolate requires NaCl for growth, while seawater is not necessary, and growth occurs optimally at about 30-33 °C, in 1-3 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 7-7.5. Strain Q1(T) shows oxidase-positive and catalase-negative activities, and possesses the ability to hydrolyse starch and alginate, but not cellulose, gelatin, urea or Tween-80. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequence indicated that strain Q1(T) is affiliated with the family Alteromonadaceae within the class Gammaproteobacteria. The isolate, strain Q1(T), is most closely related to Catenovulum agarivorans YM01(T) (94.85 %), with less than 91.2 % sequence similarity to other close relatives with validly published names. The draft genome sequence of strain Q1(T) consists of 62 contigs (>200 bp) of 4,548,270 bp. The genomes of Q1(T) and YM01(T) have an ANI value of 70.7 %, and the POCP value between the two genomes is 64.4 %. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain Q1(T) is 37.9 mol% as calculated from the draft genome sequence. The main isoprenoid quinone is ubiquinone-8. The predominant cellular fatty acids are summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C15:0 2-OH), C16:0 and C18:1 ω7c. The major polar lipids are phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. Based on data from a polyphasic chemotaxonomic, physiological and biochemical study, strain Q1(T) should be classified as a novel species of the genus Catenovulum, for which the name Catenovulum maritimus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is Q1(T) (=CICC 10836(T)=DSM 28813(T)).

A strain, JS7-9(T), which was isolated from the surface freshwater of the Jiulong River, China, was subjected to taxonomic study. The bacterium was Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped and motile by means of a single polar flagellum. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain JS7-9(T) is affiliated to the family Alteromonadaceae, showing 90.5-94.2 % of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with the genera Bowmanella (94.0-94.2 %), Aestuariibacter (93.0-93.5 %), Glaciecola (91.0-93.1 %), Alteromonas (90.5-93.1 %) and Salinimonas (90.6-91.8 %). The major fatty acids were identified as C16:0, Sum In Feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c/ω6c), Sum In Feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c/ω6c) and C17:1 ω8c, and Q-8 as the predominant isoprenoid quinone. Based on the phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic distinctiveness, strain JS7-9(T) is considered to represent a novel species of a novel genus of the family Alteromonadaceae, for which the name Pseudobowmanella zhangzhouensis gen. nov., sp. nov. is proposed, with the type strain JS7-9(T) (=MCCC 1A00758(T) = KCTC 42143(T)).

Strain 435(T), a catalase- and oxidase-positive, beige-pigmented, facultatively anaerobic and Gram-stain-negative marine bacterium, was isolated from marine sediment collected in the Arctic (8°21'629''E 72°8'827''N). The cells of the type strain are short- to curve-rods and able to grow at 4-25 °C, pH 6.0-9.0 and in the presence of 0.5-6.0 % (w/v) NaCl. It can reduce nitrate to nitrite. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was identified as Q-8 and the polar lipids are comprised of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content is 38.7 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain 435(T) belongs to the genus Colwellia. Strain 435(T) was found to exhibit 92.1-95.6 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with other species of the genus Colwellia. The differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness indicated that strain 435(T) can be considered to represent a novel species, Colwellia arctica sp. nov., of the genus Colwellia. The type strain is 435(T) (=CICC 10860(T) = ATCC BAA-2609(T)).

An aerobic Gram-negative, slightly curved rod-shaped and non-motile bacterium, designated G5_TVMV8_7(T), was isolated from the deep sea sediment sample of the North Atlantic Ocean. Strain G5_TVMV8_7(T) displayed growth at 4-45 °C (optimum, 25-35 °C), at pH 6.0-11.0 (optimum, 7.0-8.0) and in 1.0-15.0 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 3.0-5.0 %). Phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain G5_TVMV8_7(T) belongs to the genus Idiomarina, sharing the highest similarity with Idiomarina salinarum ISL-52(T) (97.4 %) and I. homiensis PO-M2(T) (97.1 %) followed by other validly described species of the genus Idiomarina (96.9-93.5 %). The G + C content of the genomic DNA was found to be 50.2 mol %. The digital DNA-DNA hybridization value between strain G5_TVMV8_7(T) and I. salinarum ISL-52(T) was 17.70 ± 2.24 %. The average nucleotide identity values between strain G5_TVMV8_7T and I. salinarum ISL-52(T) was found to be 70.03 %. The major fatty acids were C16:0 (12.7 %), iso-C15:0 (11.5 %) and Sum In Feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c/ω6c) (13.5 %). The predominant respiratory quinone was identified as Q-8, and the polar lipids as diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol including several unidentified polar lipids. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic results, a new species Idiomarina atlantica is proposed. The type strain is G5_TVMV8_7(T) (= MCCC 1A10513(T) = KCTC 42141(T)).

A Gram-negative, rod shaped, motile, aerobic bacterium, designated as strain AK49(T) was isolated from a water sample from a mangrove forest in Coringa village, Andhra Pradesh, India. Strain AK49(T) was observed to form yellow coloured, smooth, circular, convex colonies on marine agar, with entire margins. Cells of strain AK49(T) are 0.5-1.0 µm wide and 1.5-3.5 µm long. Growth was observed at 25-37 °C (optimum 30 °C), 2-6 % NaCl (optimum 2 %) and pH 6-8 (optimum 7). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the strain AK49(T) is closely related to two species recently reclassified as members of the genus Aliiglaciecola: Aliiglaciecola lipolytica JCM 15139(T) (sequence similarity 95.43 %) and Aliiglaciecola litoralis JCM 15896(T) (sequence similarity 96.91 %). The major cellular fatty acids of strain AK49(T) were found to include C16:0, C18:1ω7c and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C15:0 iso-2-OH). The polar lipid content of cell membrane was found to include phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminolipid, an unidentified lipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content of strain AK49(T) was determined to be 41.9 mol%. Based on the taxonomic methods, including chemotaxonomic, phenotypic and phylogenetic approaches, strain AK49(T) is described here as a novel species belonging to the genus Aliiglaciecola, for which the name Aliiglaciecola coringensis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Aliiglaciecola coringensis sp. nov. is AK49(T) (=MTCC 12003(T )= JCM19197(T)).

A Gram-stain negative, aerobic, non-spore-forming, motile and rod-shaped or ovoid bacterial strain, designated GJSW-6(T), was isolated from a seawater collected at Geoje island on the South Sea, South Korea, and subjected to polyphasic taxonomic study. Strain GJSW-6(T) was found to grow optimally at 30 °C, at pH 7.0-8.0 and in the presence of approximately 2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain GJSW-6(T) clustered with the type strains of two Agarivorans species, Agarivorans albus and Agarivorans gilvus, with which it exhibited sequence similarity values of 99.17 and 95.88 %, respectively. Sequence similarities to the type strains of the other recognized species were less than 93.04 %. Strain GJSW-6(T) was found to contain Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16:0, summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c) and C18:1 ω7c as the major fatty acids. The polar lipid profile of strain GJSW-6(T) containing phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylglycerol as major components was similar to those of the type strains of A. albus and A. gilvus. The DNA G+C content of strain GJSW-6(T) was determined to be 45.3 mol% and its mean DNA-DNA relatedness value with A. albus JCM 21469(T) was 19 %. Differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that strain GJSW-6(T) is separated from two Agarivorans species. On the basis of the data presented, strain GJSW-6(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Agarivorans, for which the name Agarivorans litoreus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GJSW-6(T) (= KCTC 42116(T) = NBRC 110444(T)). An emended description of the genus Agarivorans is also proposed.

One strain of algicidal bacterium, named as S088, was isolated from the intestine of healthy sea cucumbers (Stichopus horrens) in the South China Sea. Based on the analysis of its biochemical characteristics and 16S rDNA gene sequence, S088 was identified as Bowmanella denitrificans. Importantly, the algicidal activity of S088 on Chlorella vulgaris was characterized in this study. The initial densities of bacterial and algal cell showed strong influence on the removal rates of chlorophyll a. When the strain S088 was cultured under a complete darkness condition at 30 °C, its algicidal activity reached the highest level. Furthermore, it was found that the filtered supernatant from bacterial cultures had full algicidal activity, suggesting that the secreted compounds from S088 are involved in the observed algicidal action of S088. Moreover, the algicidal compounds were heat tolerant and had no cytotoxicity against fish cells, indicating that S088 would have a promising application as a safe probiotics for S. horrens. Finally, this is the first report about the algicidal activities in B. denitrificans.

A halophilic strain W33 showing lipolytic activity was isolated from the saline soil of Yuncheng Salt Lake, China. Biochemical and physiological characterization along with 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis placed the isolate in the genus Idiomarina. The extracellular lipase was purified to homogeneity by 75% ammonium sulphate precipitation, DEAE-Sepharose anion exchange and Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration chromatography. The molecular mass of the purified lipase was estimated to be 67 kDa by SDS-PAGE. Substrate specificity test indicated that it preferred long-chain p-nitrophenyl esters. Optimal lipase activity was found to be at 60 °C, pH 7.0-9.0 and 10% NaCl, and it was highly active and stable over broad temperature (30-90 °C), pH (7.0-11.0) and NaCl concentration (0-25%) ranges, showing excellent thermostable, alkali-stable and halotolerant properties. Significant inhibition by diethyl pyrocarbonate and phenylarsine oxide was observed, implying histidine and cysteine residues were essential for enzyme catalysis. In addition, the lipase displayed high stability and activity in the presence of hydrophobic organic solvents with log P(ow) ≥ 2.13. The free and immobilized lipases produced by Idiomarina sp. W33 were applied for biodiesel production using Jatropha oil, and about 84 and 91% of yields were achieved, respectively. This study formed the basic trials conducted to test the feasibility of using lipases from halophile for biodiesel production.

A Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, aerobic, motile and rod-shaped or ovoid bacterial strain, designated MA1-3(T), was isolated from a sea squirt (Halocynthia roretzi) collected from the South sea in South Korea. Strain MA1-3(T) was found to grow optimally at 25 °C, at pH 7.0-8.0 and in the presence of 2.0 % (w/v) NaCl. Phylogenetic trees based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain MA1-3(T) fell within the clade comprising Colwellia species, clustering coherently with the type strains of Colwellia aestuarii, Colwellia polaris and Colwellia chukchiensis, showing sequence similarity values of 97.2, 96.4 and 95.6 %, respectively. It exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 93.9-96.1 % to the type strains of the other Colwellia species. Strain MA1-3(T) was found to contain Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16:1 ω7c and/or C16:1 ω6c, C16:0 and C16:1 ω9c as the major fatty acids. The DNA G+C content of strain MA1-3(T) was determined to be 39.1 mol% and its mean DNA-DNA relatedness value with the type strain of C. aestuarii was 13 ± 5.4 %. The differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic and genetic distinctiveness, revealed that the novel strain is separated from other Colwellia species. On the basis of the data presented, strain MA1-3(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Colwellia, for which the name Colwellia meonggei sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MA1-3(T) (=KCTC 32380(T) = CECT 8302(T)).

A Gram-negative, aerobic, non-motile and ovoid or rod-shaped bacterial strain, GGW-M5(T), was isolated from seawater on the southern coast in Korea, and its taxonomic position was investigated by using a polyphasic approach. Strain GGW-M5(T) grew optimally at pH 7.0-8.0, at 30 °C and in the presence of 2 % (w/v) NaCl. A neighbour-joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain GGW-M5(T) belonged to the genus Glaciecola, joining the cluster comprising the type strains of G. agarilytica, G. arctica, G. chathamensis, G. mesophila, G. polaris and G. psychrophila, with which it exhibited 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values of 95.9-96.7 %. Strain GGW-M5(T) exhibited sequence similarity values of 93.2-94.8 % to the type strains of the other Glaciecola species. Strain GGW-M5(T) contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and C16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C15:0 2-OH, C16:0 and C14:0 2-OH as the major fatty acids. Major polar lipids were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and diphosphatidylglycerol. The DNA G+C content was 42.4 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties, together with the phylogenetic distinctiveness, demonstrated that strain GGW-M5(T) could be distinguished from other Glaciecola species. On the basis of the data presented, strain GGW-M5(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Glaciecola, for which the name Glaciecola aquimarina sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GGW-M5(T) (=KCTC 32108(T) = CCUG 62918(T)).

A Gram-negative, non-motile, non-endospore-forming bacterial strain, designated DPSR-4(T), was isolated from a tidal flat sediment on the southern coast of Korea. Strain DPSR-4(T) grew optimally at 25-30°C, at pH 7.0-7.5 and in the presence of 2% (w/v) NaCl. A Neighbour-Joining phylogenetic tree based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DPSR-4(T) clustered with Salinimonas chungwhensis BH030046(T) by a high bootstrap resampling value of 99.7%. Strain DPSR-4(T) exhibited 96.2% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to that of S. chungwhensis BH030046(T) and 93.7-96.6% sequence similarity to the sequences of type strains of Alteromonas species. Strain DPSR-4(T) contained Q-8 as the predominant ubiquinone and iso-C(15:0) 2-OH and/or C(16:1) ω7c, C(16:0) and C(18:1) ω7c as the major fatty acids. The major polar lipids detected in strain DPSR-4(T) and S. chungwhensis KCTC 12239(T) were phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine and an unidentified phospholipid. The DNA G+C content was 53.4 mol%. Differential phenotypic properties and phylogenetic distinctiveness of strain DPSR-4(T) demonstrated that this strain is distinguishable from the sole recognized species of the genus Salinimonas, S. chungwhensis. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic data, strain DPSR-4(T) is considered to represent a novel species of the genus Salinimonas, for which the name Salinimonas lutimaris sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is DPSR-4(T) (KCTC 23464(T), CCUG 60743(T)).

To date, all of microbial inulinases reported showed optimal activity at pH values ranging from 3.5 to 7.0. A bacterial strain, Marinimicrobium sp. LS-A18, showing high extracellular inulinolytic activity was isolated from a marine solar saltern of the Yellow Sea in China. Maximum enzyme activity was obtained at 55°C and pH 9.0, respectively. The inulinase activity was induced by inulin, but not by the other carbon sources employed. Under the optimal medium and culture condition, the highest inulinase activity, 14.6 U/ml, was obtained after 96 h of incubation at shake flask level. The optimal medium for inulinase production was MHI medium containing 4% inulin, 1% peptone and 5% NaCl, while the optimal culture condition for inulinase production were pH 7.5, temperature 37°C, agitation speed 210 rpm, medium volume 40 ml in 250 ml shake flask, and incubation time 96 h. A large amount of monosaccharides was released after inulin hydrolysis by the inulinase from strain LS-A18. This is the first report on alkaline inulinase production from microorganism.

A new moderately halophilic, strictly aerobic, Gram-negative bacterium, strain SX15(T), was isolated from hypersaline surface sediment of the southern arm of Great Salt Lake (Utah, USA). The strain grew on a number of carbohydrates and carbohydrate polymers such as xylan, starch, carboxymethyl cellulose and galactomannan. The strain grew at salinities ranging from 2 to 22% NaCl (w/v). Optimal growth occurred in the presence of 7-11% NaCl (w/v) at a temperature of 35°C and a pH of 6.7-8.2. Major whole-cell fatty acids were C16:0 (30.5%), C18:0 (14.8%), C18:1ω7c (13.1%) and C12:0 (7.8%). The G+C content of the DNA was 60 ± 0.5 mol%. By 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain SX15(T) was shown to be affiliated to members of the gammaproteobacterial genus Marinimicrobium with pair wise identity values of 92.9-94.6%. The pheno- and genotypic properties suggest that strain SX15(T) represents a novel species of the genus Marinimicrobium for which the name Marinimicrobium haloxylanilyticum is proposed. The type strain is SX15(T) (= DSM 23100(T) = CCUG 59572(T)).

Phage-host systems from extreme cold environments have rarely been surveyed. This study is concerned with the isolation and characterization of three different phage-host systems from Arctic sea ice and melt pond samples collected north-west of Svalbard (Arctic). On the basis of 16S rDNA sequences, the three bacterial phage hosts exhibited the greatest similarity to the species Shewanella frigidimarina (96.0%), Flavobacterium hibernum (94.0%), and Colwellia psychrerythraea (98.4%), respectively. The host bacteria are psychrophilic with good growth at 0 degrees C, resulting in a rapid formation of visible colonies at this temperature. The phages showed an even more pronounced adaptation to cold temperatures than the bacteria, with growth maxima below 14 degrees C and good plaque formation at 0 degrees C. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) examinations revealed that the bacteriophages belonged to the tailed, double-stranded DNA phage families Siphoviridae and Myoviridae. All three phages were host-specific.
