Abstract Fe–Mn oxide modified biochar (FMBC) was produced to explore its potential for remediation of Hg–Cd contaminated paddy soils. The results showed that the application of FMBC decreased the contents of bioavailable Hg and Cd by 41.49–81.85% and 19.47–33.02% in contrast to CK, while the amount of labile organic carbon (C) fractions and C-pool management index (CPMI) was increased under BC and FMBC treated soils, indicating the enhancement of soil C storage and nutrient cycling function. Dry weight of different parts of Oryza sativa L. was enhanced after the addition of BC and FMBC, and the contents of Fe and Mn in root iron–manganese plaques (IMP) were 1.46–2.06 and 6.72–19.35 times higher than those of the control groups. Hg and Cd contents in brown rice under the FMBC treatments were significantly reduced by 18.32–71.16% and 59.52–72.11% compared with the control. FMBC addition altered the composition and metabolism function of soil bacterial communities, especially increasing the abundance of keystone phyla, including Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. Partial least squares path modelling (PLSPM) revealed that the contents of Na2S2O3–Hg, DTPA–Cd and IMP were the key indicators affecting Hg and Cd accumulation in rice grains. These results demonstrate the simultaneous value of FMBC in remediation of Hg and Cd combined pollution and restoring soil fertility and biological productivity. Graphical Abstract

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the bound fractions of mercury (Hg), physicochemical parameters, and mineral composition of coal. Coal samples were collected from various depths within Block-VII of the Thar coalfield in Pakistan. The Hg associated with different chemical fractions of coal was extracted using a sequential extraction scheme as per the community bureau of reference (BCR) protocol. This study utilized both the BCR-sequential extraction method (BCR-SEM) and a single-step sequential extraction based on an ultrasonic-assisted method (SSE-UAM) for the fractionation analysis of Hg in coal. The extraction methodologies, BCR-SEM and SSE-UAM, were specifically designed for analyzing Hg fractionation in coal samples. The SSE-UAM offers an operational advantage, requiring only 2 h compared to the 51 h needed for BCR-SEM. The analyses were validated using standard reference material (SRM-1635a) and the spiking addition method, achieving a recovery percentage of 97.1% for total Hg concentrations using the pseudo-extraction method in SRM-1635A. Total Hg content in the coal samples ranged from 0.60 to 2.34 µg g -1 across four different coal seams from Block-VII of the Thar coalfield. Additionally, Hg concentration was observed to decrease with increasing depth, attributed to changes in mineralogical composition. The highest concentration of Hg was detected at a depth of 200-203 m, while the lowest concentration was at a depth of 152-154 m. The concentration of Hg in various fractions was 32-60% in the acid-soluble fraction, 1.72-4.92% in the reducible fraction, and 9.58-50.8% in the oxidizable fractions. The present study investigated the bioaccumulation and translocation of mercury (Hg) and chromium (Cr) in Yunyan 87 flue-cured tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) and assessed the influence of soil pH on the metal uptake by plant organs at the field scale. The study was conducted in 4 different regions selected from Sichuan Province, China: Guangyuan, Luzhou, Panzhihua, and Yibin. The results revealed that Hg highly contaminated Yibin soils at 0.29 mg kg -1 and by Cr at 147 mg kg -1 , which is above the permissible limit. The levels of Hg in tobacco plant organs were predominantly in the order of leaves > root > stem. The overall trend for Cr contents in tobacco organs was in the order of root > leaves > stem. The results of an index of bioaccumulation (IBA) and translocation factor (TF) showed that the values observed in Panzhihua and Guangyuan tobacco leaves were generally higher, despite the low levels of soil contamination. The linear mixed model (LMM) demonstrated that the log of Hg IBA in tobacco organs was likely to decrease with soil pH increase, whereas the log of Cr IBA only decreased in the root but gradually increased in the aerial parts with soil pH increase. The total random variation in the log of metals' IBA due to regions indicated that for Hg, 33.42% of the variation was explained by regional differences, while for Cr, only 13% was accounted. The results suggested that Yibin and Luzhou need to correct the soil acidity if they are set to reduce Hg contamination in tobacco-growing soils. Guangyuan and Panzhihua need efforts to keep the soil pH on track to avoid high contamination levels, and effective measures of soil nutrients supply are required to produce high tobacco leaf quality free from heavy metal content. The findings of this study may be used to ascertain regional differences in heavy metals, particularly Hg and Cr uptake by tobacco plant organs, and to prevent the cultivation areas contamination through soil pH monitoring., (© 2023. The contamination of soil and water by metals such as mercury (Hg) and cadmium (Cd) has been increasing in recent years, because of anthropogenic activities such as mining and agriculture, respectively. In this work, the changes in the rhizosphere microbiome of Lolium perenne L. during the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with Hg and Cd were evaluated. For this, two soil types were sampled, one inoculated with mycorrhizae and one without. The soils were contaminated with Hg and Cd, and L. perenne seeds were sown and harvested after 30 days. To assess changes in the microbiome, DNA isolation tests were performed, for which samples were subjected to two-step PCR amplification with specific 16S rDNA V3-V4 primers (337F and 805R). With mycorrhizae, changes had been found in the absorption processes of metals and a new distribution. While with respect to microorganisms, families such as the Enterobacteriaceae have been shown to have biosorption and efflux effects on metals such as Hg and Cd. Mycorrhizae then improve the efficiency of removal and allow the plant to better distribute the absorbed concentrations. Overall, L. perenne is a species with a high potential for phytoremediation of Cd- and Hg-contaminated soils in the tropics. Inoculation with mycorrhizae modifies the phytoremediation mechanisms of the plant and the composition of microorganisms in the rhizosphere. Mycorrhizal inoculation and changes in the microbiome were associated with increased plant tolerance to Cd and Hg. We compared uptake rates and concentrations of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) by passive sampling conditions and investigated the spatial distribution of GEM in Ulsan, the largest industrial city in South Korea. For the optimization of sampling conditions, two outer sampling containers (cylindrical polyethylene terephthalate and two stainless steel bowls), two different sulfur contents of the sorbent (16.3% and 26.3%), and three sampling periods (1, 2, and 3 months) were considered. The uptake rates of GEM were not statistically different by the sampling container, but they were increased with the sulfur contents of activated carbon. A sampling condition using two stainless bowls and lower sulfur contents of activated carbon for 2-3 months was preferred with the highest precision of GEM concentrations. With the same method, passive air samples were collected for 3 months in duplicate from 10 sites in Ulsan. The concentrations of GEM ranged from 3.13 to 11.2 ng/m 3 (mean 4.65 ng/m 3 ), and the highest concentration was measured at a non-ferrous industrial complex. A zinc smelter in the non-ferrous industrial complex was identified as a major mercury source in Ulsan. Different from the widely used constant discrimination factor Δ 15 N = 3.4‰ between two adjacent trophic positions (TPs), a scaled Δ 15 N framework for evaluating the TP of species was developed in 2014, that is, the Δ 15 N between two adjacent TPs decreases as the TP increases which is considered to be in closer conformity to the trophic cascade in the natural food web. In this study, we compared the two TP calculation methods and then reconsidered the evaluation of the trophic magnification factors (TMFs). Our results show that the TP scaled value is higher and the TMFs value is lower under the scaled Δ 15 N framework, indicating that the TMFs value under the constant Δ 15 N framework is often overestimated. We further constructed a diet proportion food web model, which shows that species with lower TP has higher contribution rate as food sources. In Xingkai Lake, the enrichment process of mercury in the food web is not strictly consistent with the diet proportion of the food web. Based on the diet proportion food web model and the mercury enrichment model, it can be found that the White shrimp (Exopalaemon modestus) is not only an important food source, but also the main source of mercury transmission in the food web. Peru is one of the great gold producers worldwide. However, a significant portion of the gold produced in Peru derives from artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in the Andes and Amazon. In ASGM, gold amalgamation with mercury (Hg) is a critical procedure to refine gold through the formation of Au-Hg alloys. Due to the rudimentary and improvised techniques conducted by small-scale and informal miners, Hg contamination has become of great concern and is strictly associated with ASGM. Multiple studies have evidenced notably high concentrations of Hg in consumable fish species, rivers, sediments, and air in locations where ASGM is one of the main sources of income to local communities and is carried out aggressively. In the present review, we have conducted a systematic search for national and international literature reporting the concentration and distribution of Hg pollution across environmental compartments, biota, and human samples in Peru. The results and data retrieved from the articles were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed, and the distribution of Hg across environmental compartments was visualized through a geographic information system. Additionally, we reviewed the use of adsorption techniques as alternatives to treat Hg 0 vapor from the gold shop and smelter flues, one of the main sources of hazardous levels of Hg exposure., (© 2022. China's Suzhou (SZ), Wuxi (WX), and Changzhou (CZ) (collectively referred to as the SXC area) have developed economies and advanced industrial production, which are typical industrial city clusters. To analyze the Hg flow characteristics, we quantified the Hg emissions and circulation according to six categories (including industrial production, agricultural livestock, vehicle exhaust, solid waste, atmospheric deposition, and runoff). The results showed that the Hg emission from coal accounting for 40.99% of the total circulation. The amount of Hg circulating in SZ is obviously higher than those in WX and CZ, accounting for 47.88% of the total regional emissions. The Hg pollution in SXC area represent an optimistic level. Except that the Hg concentration in the soil in WX is slightly higher than the first-level soil quality standard, the water and atmosphere in the three cities and the soil in SZ and CZ all meet the highest national standards. The study provides in-depth statistics on the Hg cycle characteristics of typical industrial urban agglomerations. It is beneficial to the management of Hg and provides a basis for the implementation of different schemes in different stages of production and emission, so as to effectively prevent the occurrence of serious heavy metal poisoning hazards. Detrimental effects of chemical pollution-primarily caused by human activities-on aquatic ecosystems have increasingly gained attention. Because of its hydrophobic qualities, mercury is prone to easily bioaccumulate and biomagnify through the food chain, decreasing biodiversity and eventually also affecting humans. In the present study, accumulated mercury concentrations were measured in muscle and liver tissue of perch (Perca fluviatilis) and European eel (Anguilla anguilla) collected at 26 sampling locations in Flemish (Belgian) waterbodies, allowing a comparison of these species within a variety of environmental situations. Furthermore, effects of size and weight have been assessed, expected to influence accumulation and storage of pollutants. Mercury concentrations in perch ranged up to 1.7 μg g -1 dw (median: 0.29 μg g -1 dw) in muscle and from 0.02 to 0.77 μg g -1 dw (median: 0.11 μg g -1 dw) in liver tissue. For eel, these concentrations were between 0.07 and 1.3 μg g -1 dw (median: 0.39 μg g -1 dw) and between 0.08 and 1.4 μg g -1 dw (median: 0.55 μg g -1 dw) respectively. We found a correlation of accumulated mercury with length in perch, independent of location. Furthermore, a significant difference in accumulated mercury concentrations between the targeted species was measured, with the highest mean concentrations per dry weight in eel liver and muscle tissue. In perch, higher concentrations were found in muscle compared to liver tissue, while in eel, liver tissue showed the highest concentrations. These findings were further considered with concentrations corrected for lipid content, excluding the fat compartment, which is known to a hold negligible portion of the total and methyl mercury concentrations. This confirmed our previous conclusions, except for mercury concentrations in eel. Here there was no longer a significant difference between muscle and liver concentrations. In the past 10 years, the treatment and restoration of soil and water bodies contaminated by mercury and other heavy metals have received unprecedented attention and support from China's environmental protection authorities. The search for low-cost and high-efficiency adsorbents has become one of the research hotspots in this field. In this paper, a simple and environment-friendly method was used to graft 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane on the surface of palygorskite. The synthesized mercaptofunctionalized palygorskite (M-PAL) was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, BET and SEM-EDS, respectively, and its adsorption conditions, adsorption models and thermodynamic parameters for Hg 2+ were systematically investigated. The experimental results indicated that the saturated adsorption capacity of Hg 2+ on the M-PAL could reach 203.4 mg·g -1 , within 120 min at pH 4 and 298 K. By analyzing the experimental data of adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics, it was found that the adsorption process of Hg 2+ conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which belonged to chemical adsorption of the rate-controlled step; the Langmuir model better described the adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters obtained (ΔH=29.95 kJ·mol -1 , ΔS=103.09 J·mol -1 ·K -1 and ΔG<0) show that the whole process is a spontaneous endothermic process. When the concentration of Na + , K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Cl - , NO 3 - , H 2 C 2 O 4 and C 6 H 8 was 200 times that of Hg 7 , although these organic acids had a slightly greater effect on the adsorption of Hg 2+ , although these organic acids had a slightly greater effect on the adsorption of Hg 2+ on mercaptofunctionalized palygorskite than inorganic ions, the adsorption capacity remained above 185 mg·g -1 , and the desorption rates were about 3%. The proposed Minamata Convention ban on the use of fluorescent lamps at the end of 2020, with a consequent reduction in mercury (Hg) light products, is expected to produce large amounts of discarded fluorescent bulbs. In this context, the most effective recycling options are a thermal mercury recovery system and/or aqueous solution leaching (lixiviation) to recover rare earth elements (REEs). Due to the heterogeneous nature of these wastes, a complete characterization of Hg compounds in addition to a determination of their desorption temperatures is required for their recycling. The objective of this study is to assess the feasibility of a fast cost-effective thermal characterization to ameliorate recycling treatments. A pyrolysis heating system with a heat ramping capability combined with atomic absorption spectrometry makes it possible to obtain residue data with regard to the temperature ranges needed to achieve total Hg desorption. The major drawback of these heat treatments has been the amount of Hg absorbed from the residue by the glass matrices, ranging from 23.4 to 39.1% in the samples studied. The prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has increased over the recent decades. Exposure to environmental contaminants may be a risk factor for the development of GDM, but this is heavily dependent on particular circumstances. Studies on various areas linking various factors are therefore needed. We examined the associations between serum trace element levels and incidents of GDM among 102 pregnant women (diabetic n = 60 and healthy n = 42) living in Birjand (Iran). Blood serum samples were analyzed for concentrations of elements linked to particulate matter air pollution such as As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, V, and Zn. Concentrations of As (8.58 vs. 3.15 μg/L), Cd (6.74 vs. 0.52 μg/L), and Hg (2.60 vs. 0.90 μg/L) were significantly higher in women with GDM. Risk difference (RD) estimation showed that As, 0.516 (0.355, 0.677); Cd, 0.719 (0.534, 0.904); and Hg, 0.505 (0.276, 0.735) increase GDM probability, while V lower that risk, -0.139 (-0.237, -0.042). With the principal component analysis, we were able to separate subjects according to their GDM status based on element levels. Such classification revealed very high efficiency with a true positive rate of 93%, according to linear discriminant analysis. GDM subjects presented higher levels of As, Cd, and Hg, indicating that these elements may disturb insulin metabolism and promote the development of GDM. Therefore, we conclude that systematic monitoring of trace elements followed by multivariate modeling in women planning pregnancy should be carried out to prevent the development of GDM., (© 2021. Mercury and selenium concentrations and Se:Hg molar ratio in edible muscle and hepatopancreas of the crab Callinectes arcuatus from coastal lagoons of northwest Mexico were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The three coastal lagoons were Santa María La Reforma (SMLR), Urías (UR), and Huizache-Caimanero (HC); samplings were carried out from December 2016 to October 2017. The mercury ranges in the muscle of C. arcuatus in SMLR, UR, and HC lagoons were 0.31-0.52, 0.15-0.45, and 0.22-0.55 μg g -1 , respectively. In hepatopancreas, the values ranged from 0.08 to 0.15, 0.06 to 0.15, and 0.05 to 0.12 μg g -1 in SMLR, UR, and HC lagoons, in that order. For selenium concentrations in C. arcuatus muscle, the ranges 11.64-20.14, 14.88-19.71, and 15.27-29.51 μg g -1 were determined in SMLR, UR, and HC lagoons, respectively. While for hepatopancreas, the ranges were 34.34-44.13, 27.77-40.45, and 15.16-49.80 μg g -1 , in that order. No significant relationships (p > 0.05) between mercury and selenium concentrations (in white meat and hepatopancreas) were observed in C. arcuatus carapace width and length. Se:Hg molar ratio values were 98.1 ± 20.8, 171.4 ± 81.6, and 176.8 ± 51.2 for SMLR, UR, and HC lagoons, in that order. This high ratio (> 1) in C. arcuatus edible muscle indicated that selenium concentration was sufficient to neutralize possible mercury toxicity, so it does not represent danger to humans when it is consumed.

Human remains and corpses' cremation is an increasing practice worldwide alternative to burials, which have increased their cost and reduced spaces in cemeteries. Alike to other combustion processes, cremation produces pollutant emissions that contribute to worsen air quality in modern cities. A 6-month sampling campaign was performed in order to characterize emissions from corpse cremation in three different crematorium ovens and develop emission factors which were used to determine the population exposure to those pollutants during cremation activities applying a dispersion model. The main difference among crematoria was the inclusion or non-inclusion of controlled air supply devices. Using isokinetic samplings in the chimneys crematoria, emissions were measured and characterized with different chemical analyses. No significant differences were found in arsenic and metal concentrations among different crematories, although carbon monoxide, particles, elemental carbon, organic carbon, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations in facilities without controlled air supply were up to seven times higher than those with controlled air supply. Nevertheless, these pollutants exceeded standards in all crematoria. Except for elemental and organic carbon concentration that correlated with corpse weight, other recorded cadaver characteristics bear no relation with pollutant emissions. Emission factors among different ovens did not present significant differences; then, they were used for dispersion modeling of particles and mercury emissions over Mexico City when 35 crematoria operate simultaneously through an hour showing that PM 2.5 and Hg increase 0.01-1 μg m -3 and 0.01-0.1 ng m -3 , respectively, in that scenario.

The energy transfer in the aquatic food chain is an important way for mercury (Hg) to enter other trophic levels. The objective of this work was to evaluate the Hg concentrations in plankton upstream and downstream of the Samuel Hydroelectric Reservoir, Rondônia, Brazil. Phytoplankton and zooplankton samples were collected with 20-μm and 68-μm nylon nets. An aliquot was removed for taxonomic analysis and another for total mercury determination, performed by cold vapor atomic absorption spectroscopy. Water physical-chemical parameters were also measured. The Hg concentrations in total plankton (phytoplankton and zooplankton samples) obtained at the three sampling upstream stations showed the same behavior, with the highest values registered in June 2005 (232 μg kg -1 , 118 μg kg -1 , 128 μg kg -1 ). The lowest values at stations J1 and M1 were recorded in November 2005 (4 μg kg -1 and 22 μg kg -1 , respectively), while the lowest values at stations M4 and M8 were recorded in October 2005 (22 μg kg -1 and 5 μg kg -1 , respectively). The Hg results found in the plankton in this study corroborate the results of other recent studies in the same region. The statistical analyses revealed that Hg concentrations in plankton do not explain the distribution of these organisms at the four sampling stations of Samuel Reservoir. Graphical Abstract.

Gold mining in the 1800s has led to the contamination of wetlands with introduced mercury (Hg) and geogenic arsenic (As). In situ risk management tools to reduce mobility and toxicity of Hg and As are needed to support natural restoration of impacted ecosystems. Here, we explored whether a nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) slurry injected into two different contaminated wetland sediments can reduce Hg and As mobility to the overlaying water and toxicity to two aquatic invertebrates, burrowing mayflies (Hexagenia spp.) and Chinese mystery snails (Cipangopaludina chinensis). Total water Hg and As concentrations overlying both contaminated sediments were reduced by at least 75% and 88% respectively when treated with nZVI slurry. In the first sediment, juvenile snail survival increased from 75% in the untreated sediment to 100% in all nZVI treatments. The 2% nZVI treatment level was the only one with surviving mayflies (33%) and growth of juvenile snails. No snails or mayflies survived in the second sediment, regardless of nZVI treatment level. However, snails survived longer in this sediment with 4% and 8% nZVI. To improve reactivity of nZVI without increasing nZVI dose, future studies should investigate matrix-supported nZVI for reducing mobility and toxicity of As and Hg in wetland sediments.

Mercury (Hg) is deposited temporarily in soil and can be remobilised into rivers and seas. Given that rivers are a significant part of the mercury budget in the southern Baltic region (inland sea located in northern Europe) and meteorological changes (e.g. intense rain, drought) are observed more frequently, it is important to recognize the factors affecting the cycling of bioavailable Hg forms. The aim of this study was to identify the processes influencing the changes of labile and stabile mercury proportion in soil and the potential impact on the outflow of labile Hg into fluvial systems. For this purpose, soil samples, river sediments, and river water were collected from the Reda River (southern Baltic Sea catchment area) during the 2015 hydrologic year. The material was analysed for total and particulate mercury content and Hg forms, by a thermo-desorption method. The analysis showed that due to changes of meteorological and hydrological conditions Hg can enter rivers and then be introduced into the marine environment in various forms. On the one hand due to high precipitation events washing out of labile (i.e. bond with halogenides, MeHg, HgSO 4 ), Hg forms into the river can be enhanced which affects increasing of availability of the most dangerous Hg form in the water systems. On the other hand the same event can cause the limitation of bioavailable mercury forms by a conversion of labile Hg into the most stable one (HgSO 4 ➔ HgS) under anaerobic conditions.

Although significantly impacted, Guanabara Bay (GB), located in southeastern Brazil, is still an important fishery source for the state of Rio de Janeiro. Hg contamination, in particular, is of concern in the area and should be regularly monitored, as Hg bioaccumulation and biomagnification processes may lead public health risks to the local human population due to the consumption of contaminated food items, such as crabs. In this context, the aim of the present study was to determine total Hg (THg) concentrations in swimming crabs from three GB areas and investigate the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on Hg concentrations at the beginning and the end of the rainy season. Crabs and water samples were obtained from three areas, inside the bay, at the mouth of the bay and outside the bay. A clear rainfall effect on the investigated abiotic variables was observed, with increased rainfall and temperatures noted at the end of the study period. Significant statistical correlations were observed between THg concentrations and the assessed abiotic variables at the three study points at the beginning and end of the rainy season. The rainy season was noted as directly affecting THg concentrations at Guanabara Bay and, consequently, swimming crab THg contents. THg concentrations in swimming crabs at Urca and at the Cagarras Islands were higher at the beginning of the rainy season compared to the end, while the opposite was observed for the sampling point outside the bay. Higher Hg concentrations were detected at the outermost point of the bay in relation to the Cagarras Islands, probably due to the local upwelling event. THg values in Callinectes sp. were higher than concentrations reported for other areas in Brazil but lower than other reports worldwide. Calculated THg intakes surpassed the maximum National Research Council permissible limits of 0.049 mg/week at all sampling stations during both seasons, raising public health concerns. Further research for longer monitoring periods during different seasons are essential to ascertain which climatic period is most critical regarding Hg availability at this anthropogenically-impacted estuary.

Total (all forms of inorganic and organic) concentrations of mercury (Hg) and selenium (Se) were measured in dorsal muscle and eggs of wild fishes from two shallow lakes in China: Tai Lake (Ch: Taihu; TL) and Baiyangdian Lake (BYDL). Hazard quotients (HQs) were calculated by dividing concentrations of Se or Hg in muscle or eggs of fishes by threshold concentrations for effects expressed as tissue residue toxicity reference values (TR-TRVs). Concentrations of Hg in whole bodies of fishes were estimated by concentrations in muscle. Based on concentrations of Hg in whole body, HQs for fishes in TL and BYDL were less than 1.0, which suggests little to moderate potential for effects on these fishes and unaccepted adverse effects of Hg are unexpected for adult fishes. HQs of Se in muscle of common carp from TL were closed to 1.0, and 27% of HQs based on concentrations of Hg in eggs of fishes from BYDL exceeded 1.0. Potential hazard due to Hg on common carp in TL and reproductive effects of Se on fishes from BYDL exhibited need for concern. Ratios of molar concentrations of Se to Hg were greater than 1.0. Thus, there might be some protective effects of Se on effects of Hg on fishes in TL and BYDL.

This study presents results of a sediment core located in Coroa de Boi Bay, a not dredged cove within Patos Estuary, Southern Brazil. The distribution of metals (Hg, Cu, Pb) and U in the sediment profile records several contamination events since pre-colonial times to present days. A joint assessment of the distribution of these parameters and the consultation to historical documents allowed us to establish causal links between concentrations anomalies in the sediments and ancient anthropogenic contamination in the area. During the industrial period, sedimentation rates in the bay ranged from 3.4 to 5.5 mm year -1 . Applying a sedimentation rate previously calculated for undisturbed sediments in the Patos Estuary, we trace the beginning of Hg contamination as having started in the colonial period in Southern Brazil, soon after a Hispanic-Lusitanian conflict situation in South America. The most probable source of Hg contamination during this period was carroting technology used in fur processing.

Biochar is frequently applied for the reduction of mercury (Hg) migration in soil; however, most of the studies only focused on the adsorption capacity evaluation of fresh biochar. We investigated the Hg adsorption capacities of biochar prepared from wheat straw, corn straw, and sunflower seed shells. Biochar aging was simulated via natural aging, high-temperature aging, and freeze-thaw aging. The adsorption capacities of all the aged biochar were increased, and wheat straw biochar and seed shells biochar treated with high-temperature aging (wBC-Ha500 and sBC-Ha600) and corn straw biochar treated with freeze-thaw aging (cBC-Fta500) showed an observable improvement on the equilibrium adsorption amounts. The kinetics of the fresh biochar samples fitted the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the kinetics of the aged biochar samples fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Biochar adsorption capacity increased with higher initial concentrations and increasing temperatures. Elemental analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectra, cation-exchange capacity (CEC), surface area (SA), zeta potential, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the aging mechanism consisted of hydroxylation and carboxylation caused by the functional groups on the biochar surface. According to the different climatic zones in China, wheat straw biochar and seed shell biochar are suitable for the tropical zone and the subtropical zone, while corn straw biochar is more suitable for the cold and the mid-temperate zones.

Although sludge piles from drinking water treatment plants can contain harmful substances, in many countries, their disposal methods are still unregulated. Besides aluminum, which is a major constituent in these residues, many other contaminants-like trace metals-can be present and may result from the quality of the raw materials used for water treatment. The application of these chemicals for the treatment of drinking water can generate toxic sludge and contaminate the produced water. In the present work, mercury contamination in the sludge piles of two drinking water treatment plants located along the margins of the Juturnaíba Reservoir, Southeast Brazil, was evaluated to verify whether contaminants are incorporated during water treatment. In the summer 2012, five cores were collected from the piles, and were analyzed for Eh, granulometry, total carbon, total nitrogen, and total mercury. The results indicated an anoxic environment, reflecting composition of the suspended matter. Carbon and nitrogen presented elevated concentrations, but also seemed to reproduce the characteristics of the suspended matter in the raw water. The concentrations of mercury were extremely variable but presented unexpectedly high values in some of the layers, reaching 18,484 ng g -1 . On the other hand, concentrations ten times lower than those observed in the natural system (8 ng g -1 ) could be observed. It was concluded that the only possible source for the contamination of the sludge was the chemicals used for water treatment.

The overexploitation of shark and ray fishing as well as anthropogenic pollution in the sea has led to a large decline in their population, and because sharks occupy a high trophic position in the ecosystem, they could have high concentrations of heavy metals such as Hg, Pb, and Cd. This study is based on seven species of demersal sharks which were caught in the Macaronesian archipelagos (Tenerife, Gran Canaria, and the Azores Archipelago). Hg and Pb concentrations were found in the present study to be below those reported in other comparative studies, with the highest reported values of Hg and Pb being 281,738 μg/kg for Pb in Deania profundorum (Smith & Radcliffe, 1912) and 264,30 μg/kg for Hg in Centrophorus uyato, Rafinesque, 1810. As for Cd, the values found here are higher than those in the literature, the highest reported concentration being 120.36 μg/kg in Centrophorus squamosus (Bonnaterre, 1788).

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic contaminant present in most aquatic ecosystems. High concentrations pose serious threats to organisms and to human health. Because previous studies focused on few countries, environmental hazard due to Hg contamination remains obscure in many geographic areas, and for example limited information is available in North Africa. We examined total Hg contamination in 13 sites in Morocco (12 rivers and one lake) spread over a large area, 400 km north-south and 350 km west-east, that encompasses different biogeographic zones separated by the Atlas Mountains. Due to their longevity and sedentary habits, we used freshwater turtles as biological probes to monitor Hg exposure. Keratinized tissues reflect long-term Hg exposure; thus, we assayed Hg concentration in the claws of > 200 individuals and supplemented these data with blood Hg concentrations of > 60 individuals (a tissue that provides shorter term Hg exposure integration). The results provide the first large-scale picture of Hg contamination in the aquatic freshwater systems of Morocco. Comparisons with previous studies revealed that some of the sites were highly contaminated (e.g. mean Hg concentrations were above 5 μg g -1 , a very high level in keratinized tissues) whereas other sites presented moderate or baseline levels. Unexpectedly, all highly contaminated sites were found in less densely populated areas, while more densely urbanized northern sites, even the sewers of large cities, were not highly contaminated. We hypothesize that silver mining activities in the southern High Atlas and in the Anti-Atlas contaminate rivers of the catchment basins over long distances. These findings indicate that fish, water consumption and contamination levels in local people should be further scrutinized.

Although the impacts of large dams on freshwater biota are relatively well known, the effects of small hydropower plants (SHP) are not well investigated. In this work, we studied if mercury (Hg) concentrations in fish rise in two tropical SHP reservoirs, and whether similar effects take place during impoundment. Total Hg concentrations in several fish species were determined at two SHP in the Upper Guaporé River basin floodplain, Brazil. In total, 185 specimens were analysed for Hg content in dorsal muscle and none of them reported levels above the safety limit (500 μg kg -1 ) for fish consumption recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The highest levels of Hg (231 and 447 μg kg -1 ) were found in carnivorous species in both reservoirs. Mercury increased as a function of standard length in most of the fish populations in the reservoirs, and higher Hg concentrations were found in fish at the reservoir compared with fish downstream. The high dissolved oxygen concentrations and high transparency of the water column (i.e. oligotrophic reservoir) together with the absence of thermal stratification may explain low Hg methylation and low MeHg levels found in fish after flooding. Overall, according to limnological characteristics of water, we may hypothesise that reservoir conditions are not favourable to high net Hg methylation.
