Toward the development of a new parent-rating for insomnia, this multi-site qualitative study explored sleep problems and related impacts in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families. To ensure content validity of the measure, we conducted six focus groups with caregivers (N = 25) of 24 children (age 3 to 18 years) with ASD. Based on parent report, all children had a history of mild or greater insomnia. The focus group transcripts were systematically coded to identify major themes. Verbatim comments from caretakers were used to generate 134 candidate items. Further review by the research team and an expert panel followed by individual cognitive interviews with 12 parents reduced the item bank to 40. The thematic analysis of focus group transcripts identified 7 categories: (1) Trouble falling asleep; (2) trouble staying asleep; (3) early morning waking; (4) bedtime routines; (5) parental strategies for bedtime management; (6) impact of sleep problems on the child; and (7) impact of sleep problems on the family. The Flesch Kincaid Grade Level of the 40-item version was 7.2 (seventh grade reading level). Insomnia in children with ASD shares features in common with insomnia in the general pediatric population. However, perhaps owing to autistic features such as insistence on sameness, sensory sensitivities, communication impairments, insomnia in children with ASD appears to have unique behavioral manifestations. This research evaluated the feasibility of actigraphy to measure sleep and physical activity in children (ages 2-8 years) with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We also explored associations between sleep and physical activity. Validated screening measures established eligibility. Questionnaires, diaries, and 5 days and 5 nights of actigraphy monitoring were used to collect data. Of the 32 children enrolled, 27 (84.4%) completed actigraphy monitoring. Based on the median steps per day, children with high physical activity had lower total sleep time and more disruptive behaviors than children with low physical activity. Findings support the feasibility of using actigraphy to measure sleep and physical activity in children with ASD. Larger studies are needed to evaluate interactions of physical activity on sleep in this population., (© 2022. Purpose: To evaluate the agreement of 4D flow cMRI-derived bulk flow features and fluid (blood) velocities in the carotid bifurcation using prospective and retrospective gating techniques., Methods: Prospective and retrospective ECG-gated three-dimensional (3D) cine phase-contrast cardiac MRI with three-direction velocity encoding (i.e., 4D flow cMRI) data were acquired in ten carotid bifurcations from men (n = 3) and women (n = 2) that were cardiovascular disease-free. MRI sequence parameters were held constant across all scans except temporal resolution values differed. Velocity data were extracted from the fluid domain and evaluated across the entire volume or at defined anatomic planes (common, internal, external carotid arteries). Qualitative agreement between gating techniques was performed by visualizing flow streamlines and topographical images, and statistical comparisons between gating techniques were performed across the fluid volume and defined anatomic regions., Results: Agreement in the kinematic data (e.g., bulk flow features and velocity data) were observed in the prospectively and retrospectively gated acquisitions. Voxel differences in time-averaged, peak systolic, and diastolic-averaged velocity magnitudes between gating techniques across all volunteers were 2.7%, 1.2%, and 6.4%, respectively. No significant differences in velocity magnitudes or components ([Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]) were observed. Importantly, retrospective acquisitions captured increased retrograde flow in the internal carotid artery (i.e., carotid sinus) compared to prospective acquisitions (10.4 ± 6.3% vs. 4.6 ± 5.3%; [Formula: see text] < 0.05)., Conclusion: Prospective and retrospective ECG-gated 4D flow cMRI acquisitions provide comparable evaluations of fluid velocities, including velocity vector components, in the carotid bifurcation. However, the increased temporal coverage of retrospective acquisitions depicts increased retrograde flow patterns (i.e., disturbed flow) not captured by the prospective gating technique., (© 2022. Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) face higher levels of caregiver strain compared to parents of children with other disabilities. This study examined child clinical features that predict high levels of caregiver strain for 374 parents of children with ASD. Caregiver strain was measured using the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire (CGSQ) objective, subjective internalized, and subjective externalized subscales. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated an acceptable fit for the original CGSQ three-factor solution. The strongest child predictors across CGSQ subscales were: disruptive behavior for objective strain, autism severity and disruptive behavior for subjective internalized strain, and oppositional behavior and hyperactivity for subjective externalized strain. Individualized interventions that attend to specific elements of parental strain may reduce strain and improve family wellbeing., (© 2020. Sea urchins have the capacity to destructively overgraze kelp beds and cause a wholesale shift to an alternative and stable 'urchin barren' reef state. However, destructive grazing appears labile and contingent on behavioural shift. Changes in supply of allochthonous 'drift-kelp' food are hypothesised as a trigger of change in urchin grazing behaviour, yet field tests are lacking. Here we conduct a suite of in situ behavioural surveys and manipulative experiments within kelp beds and on urchin barrens to examine foraging movements and evidence for a behavioural switch to an 'overgrazing mode' by the Australian urchin Heliocidaris erythrogramma (Echinometridae). Tracking urchins using time-lapse photography revealed urchin foraging to conform to a random walk model within kelp beds and on barrens. However, many individuals tended towards local movement within proximal crevices and movement was reduced in kelp beds compared to barrens. Directional movement of urchins toward newly available kelp was experimentally inducible, consistent with locally observed 'mobile-feeding-fronts' that develop at barrens-kelp interfaces. Habitat-specific feeding modes were also evidenced by herbivory assays which revealed urchin grazing rates to be high on both drift-kelp and standing kelp on barren grounds, while drift-kelp but not standing kelp was consumed at high rates within kelp beds. Time-lapse tracking of urchin foraging before/after addition of drift-kelp revealed a reduction in foraging across the reef surface after drift-kelp capture. Collectively, results indicate that the availability of drift-kelp is a pivotal trigger in determining urchin feeding modes which thus mediates the shift between alternative stable states for rocky reef ecosystems.

Understanding the strength and type of interactions among species is vital to anticipate how ecosystems will respond to ongoing anthropogenic stressors. Here, we examine the ecological function of native (Ecklonia radiata) and invasive (Undaria pinnatifida) kelps in resisting shifts to sediment-trapping turf on reefs within the highly urbanized temperate Port Phillip Bay (PPB), Australia. Short-term (30 days) and long-term (232 days) manipulations demonstrated that kelp laminae can clear and maintain the substratum free of turfs, while conversely, removal of kelp leads to a proliferation of turfs. Analyses looking at the relationship between total length of E. radiata and U. pinnatifida and the area cleared of turf algae showed that the clearing effect of E. radiata over a year was greater than that of U. pinnatifida due to the annual die-back of the invasive. A natural experiment (608 days) identified that ongoing sea urchin (Heliocidaris erythrogramma) grazing led to native kelp bed decline, facilitating turf dominance. Even though U. pinnatifida establishes once native beds are disturbed, its ecological function in clearing turf is weaker than E. radiata, given its annual habit. In PPB, turfs represent the more persistent and problematic algal group and are likely changing the structure, function, and energy flows of shallow temperate reefs in this urbanised embayment.

Sleep problems are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and adversely impact daytime functioning. Although no questionnaires have been developed to assess sleep in children with ASD, the 33-item Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) is widely used in this population. We examined the factor structure of the CSHQ in 2872 children (age 4-10 years) enrolled in the Autism Treatment Network. A four-factor solution (Sleep Initiation and Duration, Sleep Anxiety/Co-Sleeping, Night Waking/Parasomnias, and Daytime Alertness) with 5-6 items per factor explained 75% of the total variation. Ten items failed to load on any factor. This abbreviated 23-item four-factor version of this measure may be useful when assessing sleep in children with ASD.

This analysis describes (1) cell phone and smartphone ownership, (2) continuity of phone numbers, (3) use of specific technologies while inside and outside the U.S., and (4) perceived adequacy of specific formats to receive health research results among Latino farmworkers. Telecommunications questionnaires were administered to 165 and 102 farmworkers in North Carolina in 2012 and 2013, respectively. Univariate and bivariate analyses were completed. Increasing numbers of Latino farmworkers own cell phones and smartphones. Talk and text functions are used frequently. Relatively few farmworkers maintain consistent phone numbers. They prefer to receive study results through low technology formats. Strategies to use cell phones to improve health or to share research findings will face obstacles in this population. Public health officials who identify and implement effective strategies to overcome these barriers may be able to harness mobile technologies to address the needs of Latino farmworkers.

Many children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have co-occurring feeding problems. However, there is limited knowledge about how these feeding habits are related to other behavioral characteristics ubiqitious in ASD. In a relatively large sample of 256 children with ASD, ages 2-11, we examined the relationships between feeding and mealtime behaviors and social, communication, and cognitive levels as well repetitive and ritualistic behaviors, sensory behaviors, and externalizing and internalizing behaviors. Finally, we examined whether feeding habits were predictive of nutritional adequacy. In this sample, we found strong associations between parent reported feeding habits and (1) repetitive and ritualistic behaviors, (2) sensory features, and (3) externalizing and internalizing behavior. There was a lack of association between feeding behaviors and the social and communication deficits of ASD and cognitive levels. Increases in the degree of problematic feeding behaviors predicted decrements in nutritional adequacy.

Assessing white matter fiber orientations directly from DWI measurements in single-shell HARDI has many advantages. One of these advantages is the ability to model multiple fibers using fewer parameters than are required to describe an ODF and, thus, reduce the number of DW samples needed for the reconstruction. However, fitting a model directly to the data using Gaussian mixture, for instance, is known as an initialization-dependent unstable process. This paper presents a novel direct fitting technique for single-shell HARDI that enjoys the advantages of direct fitting without sacrificing the accuracy and stability even when the number of gradient directions is relatively low. This technique is based on a spherical deconvolution technique and decomposition of a homogeneous polynomial into a sum of powers of linear forms, known as a symmetric tensor decomposition . The fiber-ODF (fODF), which is described by a homogeneous polynomial, is approximated here by a discrete sum of even-order linear-forms that are directly related to rank-1 tensors and represent single-fibers. This polynomial approximation is convolved to a single-fiber response function, and the result is optimized against the DWI measurements to assess the fiber orientations and the volume fractions directly. This formulation is accompanied by a robust iterative alternating numerical scheme which is based on the Levenberg-Marquardt technique. Using simulated data and in vivo, human brain data we show that the proposed algorithm is stable, accurate and can model complex fiber structures using only 12 gradient directions.

The Research Units on Pediatric Psychopharmacology--Autism Network reported additional benefit when adding parent training (PT) to antipsychotic medication in children with autism spectrum disorders and serious behavior problems. The intent-to-treat analyses were rerun with putative predictors and moderators. The Home Situations Questionnaire (HSQ) and the Hyperactivity/Noncompliance subscale of the Aberrant Behavior Checklist were used as outcome measures. Candidate predictors and moderators included 21 demographics and baseline measures of behavior. Higher baseline HSQ scores predicted greater improvement on the HSQ regardless of treatment assignment, but no other predictors of outcome were observed. None of the variables measured in this study moderated response to PT. Antipsychotic medication plus PT appears to be equally effective for children with a wide range of demographic and behavioral characteristics.

Quantifying uncertainty is an increasingly important topic across many domains. The uncertainties present in data come with many diverse representations having originated from a wide variety of disciplines. Communicating these uncertainties is a task often left to visualization without clear connection between the quantification and visualization. In this paper, we first identify frequently occurring types of uncertainty. Second, we connect those uncertainty representations to ones commonly used in visualization. We then look at various approaches to visualizing this uncertainty by partitioning the work based on the dimensionality of the data and the dimensionality of the uncertainty. We also discuss noteworthy exceptions to our taxonomy along with future research directions for the uncertainty visualization community.

A hole- and electron-conducting polymer has been prepared by electropolymerization of a porphyrin-fullerene monomer. The porphyrin units are linked by aminophenyl groups to form a linear chain in which the porphyrin is an integral part of the polymer backbone. The absorption spectrum of a film formed on indium-tin-oxide-coated glass resembles that of a model porphyrin-fullerene dyad, but with significant peak broadening. The film demonstrates a first oxidation potential of 0.75 V vs. SCE, corresponding to oxidation of the porphyrin polymer, and a first reduction potential of -0.63 V vs. SCE, corresponding to fullerene reduction. Time-resolved fluorescence studies show that the porphyrin first excited singlet state is strongly quenched by photoinduced electron transfer to fullerene. Transient absorption investigations reveal that excitation generates mobile charge carriers that recombine by both geminate and nongeminate pathways over a large range of time scales. Similar studies on a related polymer that lacks the fullerene component show complex, laser-intensity-dependent photoinduced electron transfer behavior. The properties of the porphyrin-fullerene electropolymer suggest that it may be useful in organic photovoltaic applications, wherein light absorption leads to charge separation within picoseconds in a "molecular heterojunction" with no requirement for exciton migration.

Anxiety is a common co-occurring problem among young people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). Characterized by deficits in social interaction, communication problems, and stereotyped behavior and restricted interests, this group of disorders is more prevalent than previously realized. When present, anxiety may compound the social deficits of young people with ASD. Given the additional disability and common co-occurrence of anxiety in ASD, we developed a manual-based cognitive-behavioral treatment program to target anxiety symptoms as well as social skill deficits in adolescents with ASD [Multimodal Anxiety and Social Skills Intervention: MASSI]. In this paper, we describe the foundation, content, and development of MASSI. We also summarize data on treatment feasibility based on a pilot study that implemented the intervention.

Background: The number of American students pursuing advanced science degree continues to wane. Summer research experience programs are ideal mechanisms to introduce high school and college students to scientific lifestyles., Methods: A follow-up of participants from 1995-2003 was conducted to gauge student perception of the program and to measure outcomes., Results: Data are presented from the responses of 287 (81%) participants. The Program was successful in recruiting female (67%) and underrepresented (>35%) students. Very high percentages of trainees reported pursuing advanced scientific study (>85% of high school and >92% college students)., Conclusions: Summer research experiential programs can be successful in initiating or maintaining a student's interest in science careers.

The complex sequence of events leading to apoptotic cell death is governed by an elaborate regulatory scheme involving the actions of both initiator and executioner proteases. Among the most intensively studied of the initiator caspases is caspase-9, an essential throughput element in the so-called intrinsic or mitochondrially gated pathway of apoptosis. Previous reviews have described the proteolytic processing and activation of this protease in much detail; here we provide an update on caspase-9 regulation. A comprehensive description of the intra- and intermolecular events involved in modulating protein expression and activity are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the role alternative splicing plays in the expression of functionally divergent protein isoforms, as well as, the participation of specific post-translational events in regulating caspase-9 activity. Such discrete modulation in reported activity characterizes, not only the pivotal role of this protease in the final commitment process itself, but also emphasizes the more general interplay that exists between mutually opposing cytotoxic and cytoprotective influences in maintaining cellular homeostasis., (Copyright 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers)

It is widely believed that, when extrinsic conditions are similar, the likelihood of species invading established assemblages decreases with increasing species richness of the recipient community. Here we show that, for a sessile marine invertebrate community, invasion of patches increases with richness of the patch. We show that invasions can increase with local species richness by two distinct mechanisms. In the first, opportunistic colonisers with traits typical of invasive species colonise species-rich patches at higher rates because speciose patches are dominated by small colonies and mortality rates of small colonies are greater than that of large ones. Thus, mortality provides bare space for opportunists to colonise more frequently in species-rich patches. In the second, some species avoid colonising open areas of free space but preferentially associate with established colonies of particular other species, and a given preferred associate is more likely to occur in species-rich than in species-poor patches. These patterns are the result of particular properties of individual species and local species dynamics, and show that reduced risk of invasion is not necessarily an intrinsic property of species-rich communities. We conclude that resistance to invasion will be determined by the properties of the particular component species and emergent dynamics of the recipient community, and not by an aggregate community property such as richness.

Attentional processes in individuals with high-functioning autism were compared with a matched control group. Participants for the study were 103 children and adults with autism and 103 control subjects. Measures administered corresponded to Mirsky et al.'s (1991) factor analysis of tests of attention. Diminished performance was noted on measures that loaded on the Focus-Execute and Shift factors, but not on the Sustain and Encode factors. For tests in which psychomotor speed was used as the score, and the difference between groups was significant, covariance analyses were performed, using tests of basic motor functions as covariates. This procedure led to attenuation to the point of nonsignificant differences in the case of some of the attention tests. Thus, this comprehensive analysis of attention in individuals with high-functioning autism only found differences on measures in which the task placed demands on cognitive flexibility or psychomotor speed. Thus, purported attention deficits in autism may actually be primary deficits in complex decision making or psychomotor abilities.

Thirteen children (ages 5.6 to 11.2 years) with autism and symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study of methylphenidate (0.3 and 0.6 mg/kg per dose). Eight subjects responded positively, based upon a minimum 50% decrease on the Conners Hyperactivity Index. Ratings of stereotypy and inappropriate speech, which are often associated with autistic core features, also decreased. However, no changes were found on the Child Autism Rating Scale, a global assessment of autistic symptomotology. Significant adverse side effects occurred in some children including social withdrawal and irritability, especially at the 0.6 mg/kg dose. Results suggest that methylphenidate can be efficacious for children with autism and ADHD symptoms. However, this group of children seems to be particularly susceptible to adverse side effects.

Describes the types of psychiatric and behavioral disturbance present in 169 preschoolers with developmental disabilities admitted to a specialized psychiatric inpatient unit. Differences in the proportion of some diagnoses and behavior problems across cognitive functioning level and across age were found. Seventy-two percent of the sample had one or more medical diagnosis. Similarities and differences with earlier reports in the literature are discussed.
