Abstract

Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature

Abstract

LiteBIRD Collaboration: et al., LiteBIRD is a future satellite mission designed to observe the polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation in order to probe the inflationary universe. LiteBIRD is set to observe the sky using three telescopes with transition-edge sensor bolometers. In this work we estimated the LiteBIRD instrumental sensitivity using its current design. We estimated the detector noise due to the optical loadings using physical optics and ray-tracing simulations. The noise terms associated with thermal carrier and readout noise were modeled in the detector noise calculation. We calculated the observational sensitivities over fifteen bands designed for the LiteBIRD telescopes using assumed observation time efficiency., This work is supported in Japan by ISAS/JAXA for Pre-Phase A2 studies, by the acceleration program of JAXA research and development directorate, by the World Premier International Research Center Initiative (WPI) of MEXT, by the JSPS Core-to-Core Program of A. Abstract

Recent developments of transition-edge sensors (TESs), based on extensive experience in ground-based experiments, have been making the sensor techniques mature enough for their application on future satellite cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. LiteBIRD is in the most advanced phase among such future satellites, targeting its launch in Japanese Fiscal Year 2027 (2027FY) with JAXA’s H3 rocket. It will accommodate more than 4000 TESs in focal planes of reflective low-frequency and refractive medium-and-high-frequency telescopes in order to detect a signature imprinted on the CMB by the primordial gravitational waves predicted in cosmic inflation. The total wide frequency coverage between 34 and 448 GHz enables us to extract such weak spiral polarization patterns through the precise subtraction of our Galaxy’s foreground emission by using spectral differences among CMB and foreground signals. Telescopes are cooled down to 5 K for suppressing thermal noise and contain polarization modulators with transmissive half-wave plates at individual apertures for separating sky polarization signals from artificial polarization and for mitigating from instrumental 1/f noise. Passive cooling by using V-grooves supports active cooling with mechanical coolers as well as adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators. Sky observations from the second Sun–Earth Lagrangian point, L2, are planned for 3 years. An international collaboration between Japan, the USA, Canada, and Europe is sharing various roles. In May 2019, the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, JAXA, selected LiteBIRD as the strategic large mission No. 2.

Abstract

et al., Feedhorn- and orthomode transducer- (OMT) coupled transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers have been designed and micro-fabricated to meet the optical specifications of the LiteBIRD high frequency telescope (HFT) focal plane. We discuss the design and optical characterization of two LiteBIRD HFT detector types: dual-polarization, dual-frequency-band pixels with 195/280 GHz and 235/337 GHz band centers. Results show well-matched passbands between orthogonal polarization channels and frequency centers within 3% of the design values. The optical efficiency of each frequency channel is conservatively reported to be within the range 0.64−0.72, determined from the response to a cryogenic, temperature-controlled thermal source. These values are in good agreement with expectations and either exceed or are within 10% of the values used in the LiteBIRD sensitivity forecast. Lastly, we report a measurement of loss in Nb/SiNx/Nb microstrip at 100 mK and over the frequency range 200–350 GHz, which is comparable to values previously reported in the literature., This work is supported by NASA under grant no. 80NSSC18K0132.

5. Optimized versus conventional trigger threshold for pancreatic phase image acquisition using dual-energy CT at 40-keV: a randomized controlled trial.

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of optimized trigger threshold on 40-keV pancreatic phase images acquired with a dual-energy CT (DECT) protocol., Methods: A cohort of 69 consecutive participants (median age, 72 years) undergoing a pancreatic protocol DECT examination between September to December 2021 were prospectively randomized into two protocols: conventional trigger threshold of 100 HU (Group A, n = 34) and optimized trigger threshold of 30 HU (Group B, n = 35). Pancreatic phase image acquisition was performed with fixed delay of 20 s from the trigger threshold. Two radiologists assessed the 40-keV pancreatic phase images for scan timing adequacy using a binary scale (adequate or inadequate). The proportions of these classifications were compared in the two groups using the Fisher's test., Results: The median times to achieve the aortic attenuation of 30 HU and 100 HU were 16.3 s and 22.3 s in Group A, respectively, and was 17.8 s for 30 HU in Group B. The median time difference from 30 HU to 100 HU was 4.5 s in Group A. The scan timing adequacies of pancreatic phase images were classified as adequate (50.0% and 74.3%) or inadequate (50.0% and 25.7%) in Group A and Group B (P = 0.049)., Conclusion: An optimized trigger threshold of 30 HU allows consistent acquisition of adequate pancreatic phase images compared to the conventional trigger threshold of 100 HU for pancreatic protocol DECT at 40-keV which might lead to improved pancreatic lesion conspicuity., (© 2024. Abstract

Purpose: To compare the quantitative parameters and qualitative image quality of dual-energy CT angiography (CTA) between two rapid kVp-switching dual-energy CT scanners., Materials and Methods: Between May 2021 and March 2022, 79 participants underwent whole-body CTA using either Discovery CT750 HD (Group A, n = 38) or Revolution CT Apex (Group B, n = 41). All data were reconstructed at 40-keV and with adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo of 40%. The two groups were compared in terms of CT numbers of the thoracic and abdominal aorta, and the iliac artery, background noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the artery, CT dose-index volume (CTDI vol ), and qualitative scores for image noise, sharpness, diagnostic acceptability, and arterial depictions., Results: The median CT number of the abdominal aorta (p = 0.04) and SNR of the thoracic aorta (p = 0.02) were higher in Group B than in Group A, while no difference was observed in the other CT numbers and SNRs of the artery (p = 0.09-0.23). The background noises at the thoracic (p = 0.11), abdominal (p = 0.85), and pelvic (p = 0.85) regions were comparable between the two groups. CTDI vol was lower in Group B than in Group A (p = 0.006). All qualitative scores were higher in Group B than in Group A (p < 0.001-0.04). The arterial depictions were nearly identical in both two groups (p = 0.005-1.0)., Conclusion: In dual-energy CTA at 40-keV, Revolution CT Apex improved qualitative image quality and reduced radiation dose., (© 2023. Purpose: To compare the diagnostic performance for detecting vascular involvement and determining resectability differences regarding pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) between contrast-enhanced CT and MRI., Methods: This retrospective study evaluated 82 patients (73 years, 46 men) with PDAC who underwent both preoperative contrast-enhanced CT and MRI from January 2008 to March 2021. Two radiologists independently categorized vascular involvements for celiac, superior mesenteric, splenic, and common hepatic arteries, and portal, superior mesenteric, and splenic veins into no tumor contact, solid soft-tissue contact ≤ 180°, or solid soft-tissue contact > 180°. The radiologists also classified resectability into resectable, borderline resectable, or locally advanced. Receiver-operating-characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performances for detecting vascular involvements which were confirmed by pathological or intraoperative findings. The proportion of resectability classifications was compared between CT and MRI by the Fisher's exact test., Results: No statistical difference was found in the diagnostic performances for detecting vascular involvement in CT (area under the ROC curve [AUC], 0.50-0.89) and MRI (AUC, 0.51-0.75) (P = 0.06-> 0.99). Resectability on CT were 79% and 68%, 20% and 26%, and 1% and 6% for resectable, borderline resectable, and locally advanced tumors for reviewers 1 and 2; those on MRI were 87% and 81%, 12% and 13%, and 1% and 6%, respectively. The proportion of resectability classifications was not different between CT and MRI (P = 0.48 and = 0.15 for reviewers 1 and 2, respectively)., Conclusion: The diagnostic performance for detecting vascular involvement and determining resectability of PDAC on contrast-enhanced MRI were comparable with pancreatic protocol CT., (© 2022. Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the utility of deep learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm in unenhanced abdominal low-dose CT (LDCT)., Materials and Methods: Two patient groups were included in this prospective study: 58 consecutive patients who underwent unenhanced abdominal standard-dose CT reconstructed with hybrid iterative reconstruction (SDCT group) and 48 consecutive patients who underwent unenhanced abdominal LDCT reconstructed with high strength level of DLIR (LDCT group). The background noise and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the liver, pancreas, spleen, kidney, abdominal aorta, inferior vena cava, and portal vein were calculated. Two radiologists qualitatively assessed the overall image noise, overall image quality, and abdominal anatomical structures depiction. Quantitative and qualitative parameters and size-specific dose estimates (SSDE) were compared between SDCT and LDCT groups., Results: The background noise was lower in LDCT group than in SDCT group (P = 0.02). SNRs were higher in LDCT group than in SDCT group (P < 0.001-0.004) except for the liver. Overall image noise was superior in LDCT group than in SDCT group (P < 0.001). Overall image quality was not different between SDCT and LDCT groups (P = 0.25-0.26). Depiction of almost all abdominal anatomical structures was equal to or better in LDCT group than in SDCT group (P < 0.001-0.88). The SSDE was lower in LDCT group (4.0 mGy) than in SDCT group (20.6 mGy) (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: DLIR facilitates substantial radiation dose reduction of > 75% and significantly reduces background noise. Abstract

Objectives: Prolonged sedentary behavior (SB) may affect clinical improvements following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). We aim to assess preoperative SB effect on improvements in clinical outcomes after TKA. We hypothesized that patients with high proportion of preoperative SB have small improvements in clinical outcomes after TKA., Methods: We recruited 115 adults with knee osteoarthritis (OA), planning to undergo TKA. Knee-specific functional outcomes were assessed using the new knee society score (KSS), including total score, symptoms, patient satisfaction, patient expectations, and functional activities. Gait function was assessed using the timed up and go (TUG) test. SB was measured using a triaxial accelerometer. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate preoperative SB effect on improvements in clinical outcomes 6 months postoperatively by adjusting for several factors as potential confounders., Results: Of 115 patients, 82 were included. High proportion of preoperative SB had a significant negative effect on recovery at 6 months in the new KSS total score [β, -0.83, 95% confidence interval (CI), -1.53 to -0.12; p = 0.02], symptoms (-0.15, -0.28 to -0.02; p = 0.03), patient satisfaction (-0.22, -0.42 to -0.02; p = 0.03), and functional activities (-0.40, -0.76 to -0.04; p = 0.03) after adjusting for potential confounders., Conclusions: A high proportion of preoperative SB was a risk factor for reduced improvements in knee-specific functional outcomes after TKA. To prevent poor functional recovery after TKA, it is essential to understand the preoperative lifestyle factors and intervene proactively during acute postoperative phase in patients with high SB proportion.Key Points• Preoperative high proportion of SB had a negative effect on improvement in new KSS total scores, symptoms, patient satisfaction, and functional activities.• When considering clinical outcomes after TKA, clinicians should closely monitor patients with high proportions of preoperative SB to prevent poor functional recovery.

Abstract

A rapid and simple method has been developed for simultaneous determinations of the concentrations of nine aminoglycosides (AGs) in livestock and fishery products using phenylboronic acid (PBA) solid-phase extraction (SPE) clean-up. Unlike the widely employed SPE approaches, based on cation-exchange, PBA SPE relies on the reversible formation of covalent bonds with the analytes. The advantage of using PBA lies in the fact that this compound strongly and stably retains analytes, and the pH of the loading solution can be easily adjusted using a high-concentration buffer. The clean-up conditions, such as the pH of the loading solution and the acetonitrile concentration in the elution and wash solvents, were optimized. The degree of recovery measured for nine AGs in six samples (bovine muscle, bovine liver, milk, chicken egg, fish and shrimp) were in the 73 - 98% range, and the values for the relative standard deviation were 9.3% or less.

Abstract

Background: Whether to perform a renal biopsy for isolated hematuria remains a matter of controversy. We performed renal biopsy in hematuria without overt proteinuria patients and reported the proportion of glomerulonephritis, pathological activities, and statistical analysis of indicators associated with glomerulonephritis., Methods: Among 203 patients who underwent renal biopsy in Okubo Hospital, Japan, between January 2008 and October 2013, we identified 56 patients who fulfilled the criteria: (1) urine dipstick examination shows equal to or greater than ± blood on three or more visits, (2) proteinuria <0.3 g/day (g/g Cr), (3) eGFR ≧60 ml/min/1.73 m(2), and (4) no current medication for renal disease. We investigated biopsy findings and compared the clinical indicators in the IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and non-IgAN group., Results: The pathological diagnosis was IgAN in 35 cases (62 %), thin basement membrane disease (TBMD) in 7 (13 %), minor glomerular abnormality (MGA) in 6 (11 %), glomerular basement membrane (GBM) abnormality in 5 (9 %), and others in 3 (5 %). The histological grade of IgAN was I in 90 % and II in 10; 31 % of patients had some crescentic lesions. Comparisons between the IgAN and non-IgAN group revealed significant differences in age of onset (26 ± 13 vs. 34 ± 17 years, p = 0.04), serum IgA (340 ± 114 vs. 220 ± 101 mg/dl, p < 0.01), proteinuria (0.08 [0-0.25] vs. 0 [0-0.23] g/day [g/gCr], p < 0.01), and the presence of poikilocytes (40 vs. 10 %, p = 0.02)., Conclusions: The proportion of IgAN in hematuria without overt proteinuria was high and the pathological activities were variable. Patients with hematuria without overt proteinuria should continue their medical follow-up and the best timing of biopsy may be controversial for these patients who have multiple risk factors of IgAN.
