Clean air is imperative to the survival of all life forms on the planet. However, recent times have witnessed enormous escalation in urban pollution levels. It is therefore, incumbent upon us to decipher measures to deal with it. In perspective, the present study was carried out to assess PM 10 and PM 2.5 loading, metallic constituents, gaseous pollutants, source contributions, health impact and noise level of nine-locations, grouped as residential, commercial, and industrial in Lucknow city for 2019-21. Mean concentrations during pre-monsoon for PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 and NO 2 were: 138.2 ± 35.2, 69.1 ± 13.6, 8.5 ± 3.3 and 32.3 ± 7.4 µg/m 3 , respectively, whereas post-monsoon concentrations were 143.0 ± 33.3, 74.6 ± 14.5, 12.5 ± 2.1, and 35.5 ± 6.3 µg/m 3 , respectively. Exceedance percentage of pre-monsoon PM 10 over National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) was 38.2% while that for post-monsoon was 43.0%; whereas corresponding values for PM 2.5 were 15.2% and 24.3%. Post-monsoon season showed higher particulate loading owing to wintertime inversion and high humidity conditions. Order of elements associated with PM 2.5 is Co < Cd < Cr < Ni < V < Be < Mo < Mn < Ti < Cu < Pb < Se < Sr < Li < B < As < Ba < Mg < Al < Zn < Ca < Fe < K < Na and that with PM 10 is Co < Cd < Ni < Cr < V < Ti < Be < Mo < Cu < Pb < Se < Sr < Li < B < As < Mn < Ba < Mg < Al < Fe < Zn < K < Na < Ca. WHO AIRQ + ascertained 1654, 144 and 1100 attributable cases per 0.1 million of population to PM 10 exposure in 2019-21. Source apportionment was carried out using USEPA-PMF and resolved 6 sources with highest percent contributions including road dust re-entrainment, biomass burning and vehicular emission. In recent years, special attention has been given to emission research that led to the deposition of toxicants from road traffic. Thus, it is imperative to focus on heavy metal (HM) stressors in food items, their source contribution, and health risk assessment providing insight into their spatial role at the population level. In this study, heavy metal in the street vended noodles was studied while correlating the quality of noodle with different environmental origins. The samples were prepared using acid digestion and analysed by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer, except Hg which was analysed by direct mercury analyser. The results showed that some heavy metals like Cr, Pb, Mn, Cd, and Hg exceed their permissible limits established by the international legislation for food products. In the noodle samples, the concentration of heavy metal ranged from < 0.1 to 0.904 mg/kg for Pb, < 0.09 to 0.843 mg/kg for Ni, < 0.004 to 0.201 mg/kg for Cd, < 0.0001 to 0.004 mg/kg for Hg, < 0.01 to 1.388 mg/kg for Cu, < 0.015 to 8.049 mg/kg for Mn, and < 0.02 to 16.514 mg/kg for Cr. Noodle samples vended on high traffic density streets are directly associated with increased HM content due to atmospheric deposition from the surrounding. Source apportionment study determines that HM contamination belongs to the same source of origin, except Cr. Based on the cluster analysis, these samples fall into three major groups that were further validated by the canonical discriminant function. Health risk prediction by Monte Carlo simulation revealed an elevated non-carcinogenic health hazard risk to consumers with a hazard index (HI) shift from 71 to 75%. Health hazard analysis showed that consumers of high traffic density street vended food are at higher risk of developing health-related issues. Urban air pollution is a growing menace leading to human discomfort, increased hospitalizations, morbidity, and mortality. This study deals with deteriorated air quality due to firecracker bursting during Diwali in Lucknow. Inhalable particulates and gaseous pollutants were monitored during Diwali 2020 using air samplers. Elements, ions, and surface morphology of particles were analyzed using ICP-MS, ion chromatograph, and SEM-EDX, respectively. PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 , and NO 2 were 558, 352, 44, and 86 μg/m 3 during Diwali night and 233, 101, 17, and 40 μg/m 3 on pre-Diwali night while 241, 122, 24, and 43 μg/m 3 on Diwali day. Concentrations surged for PM 10 : 139% and 132%, PM 2.5 : 249% and 189%, SO 2 : 159% and 83%, and NO 2 : 115% and 100% on Diwali night compared to pre-Diwali night and corresponding Diwali day, respectively. Al, K, Ba, and B showed dominance in PM 10 whereas Zn, Al, Ba, and K in PM 2.5 on Diwali night. The order of metal abundance in PM 2.5 was Cd < Co < Ag < As < Cr < Ni < Cu < Bi < Pb < Mn < Sr < Fe < B < Zn < Al < Ba < K. Cations NH 4 + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and anions F - , Cl - , NO 3 - , Br - , NO 2 - , SO 4 -2 , PO 4 3- showed a 2-8 fold increase on Diwali night relative to pre-Diwali night. Average metal concentrations varied by 2.2, 1.6, and 0.09 times on Diwali than pre-Diwali in residential, commercial, and industrial areas, respectively. PM 10 concentration increased by 458% and 1140% while PM 2.5 , 487%, and 2247% than respective NAAQS and WHO standards. Tiny firecracker particles vary in toxicity as compared to vehicular emissions and have enhanced bioavailability leading to severe threat in terms of LRI, COPD, and atherosclerosis for city dwellers. The biotechnological application of bacterial xylanases requires a high thermostability, a catalytically active state for a broad pH range. The Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (MTCC 1270) xyn A gene was amplified and cloned into the pCold vector and was expressed in Escherichia coli to evaluate the expressed proteins' thermostability . The pCold, compared to other similar vectors, has unique properties-including pH and temperature tolerance due to the presence of the cspA promoter. The recombinant xyn A-pCold (rxynApC) showed the expression of xyn A gene with a molecular weight of ~ 27 kDa, confirmed on SDS-PAGE. The rxynApC exhibits optimal activity at 70 °C and pH 8.0. The residual activity of the recombinant enzyme was 90% at pH 8.0. The thermal decomposition temperature ( T d ) value for the rxynApC enzyme was 93.33 °C obtained from the thermogravimetric analysis, indicating the potent stability of the cloned enzyme. The specific activity of native xylanase and rxynApC under optimal conditions was 32.35 and 105.5 U/mg, respectively. The structural model of the xyn A gene was predicted using the in silico tool along with the active site (containing four important Tyr-166, Gly-7, Try-69 and Arg-112 amino acids). The predicted biophysical parameters of the in silico model were similar to the experimental results. The unique feature of the csp A promoter is that it gave a high expression of rxynApC enzyme having alkali and thermostable properties with high yield in surrogate host E. coli. This research article aims to establish an easy and well-defined analytical method for detection and quantification of multiclass pesticides in Gomti river water samples because the increased agricultural activities, industrialization, and urbanization had increased the presence of pesticides in the ecosystem which causes the depletion of water quality making it a global concern. The analytical method, vortex-assisted ultrasonication-based dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction-solidification of floating organic droplets (VAUS-DLLME-SFO) was optimized using one parameter at a time approach which gave the recovery between 69.45 and 114.15%, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ) 0.0011-0.0111 µg/L and 0.0033-0.0368 µg/L, respectively, and RSD in the range of 0.75-1.29 which shows sensitivity and accuracy better than earlier reported methods. The data obtained were subjected to measurement uncertainty, risk assessment, and multivariate statistical analysis to establish the robustness of the developed analytical method. The measurement uncertainty found was concluded to be in the acceptable range for analytical results. Furthermore, the real samples were analyzed and the associated value of the risk quotient was found to be less than 1, except for aquatic invertebrates, establishing the fact that the current concentration of pesticides has no such negative threat to flora and fauna. The possible source of pesticides in the Gomti river system was established by multivariate analysis. Industrial processing of enzymes requires higher heating that affects the thermal stability of the enzyme and increases the production cost. In this study, xylanase-phytase (XP) fusion protein was generated via co-expression in a single vector with a cold-shock promoter, leading to improved activity at optimal pH, temperature and the thermal behaviour of the protein. Xylanase-phytase (XP) fusion and phytase proteins were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The XP fusion was thermally stable up to 124 °C, higher than phytase which was steady up to 113.5 °C. XP fusion exhibits higher stability at its thermal transition midpoint ( T m ) 108 °C, higher than the T m value of phytase which is 90 °C. Epidemiological evidences have shown an association of exposure to pesticides or heavy metals with increased incidences of Parkinson's disease (PD) in humans. Exposure to pesticides or metals during the decisive period of the brain development increases the susceptibility of dopaminergic neurons upon re-exposure in adult rodents. However, the effect of early life exposure to pesticide on the heavy metal-induced neurodegeneration or heavy metal on pesticide-induced neurodegeneration is not yet explored. The current study explored the effect of developmental exposure to zinc (Zn), a metal or paraquat (PQ), a pesticide on the nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons of rats challenged to Zn or PQ during adulthood. Exposure of Zn or PQ during adulthood alone exhibited marked reduction in motor activities, striatal dopamine and metabolites, glutathione content and number of dopaminergic neurons. However, the levels of lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyls, superoxide dismutase activity, pro-inflammatory cytokines and 4-hydroxynonenal-protein adducts were increased. While the expression of vesicular monoamine transporter-2 and tyrosine hydroxylase were attenuated, dopamine transporter and microglial marker Iba-1 expression, activated microglia, nuclear factor-kappa B activation, mitochondrial cytochrome c release and caspase-3/9 activation were augmented following Zn or PQ exposure. Albeit postnatal alone exposure did not alter any of the studied parameters, the developmental administration of Zn/PQ in re-challenged adult rats produced more pronounced changes in the aforementioned variables as compared with adulthood Zn or PQ alone intoxicated animals. The results demonstrate that postnatal Zn/PQ intoxication dents the oxidative stress, inflammation, cell death and dopamine metabolism and storage regulating machineries, which speed up the toxicant-induced degeneration during adulthood.

Extracorporeal septoplasty is a valuable tool in the armamentarium of the nasal surgeon for the reconstruction of the severely deviated septum. Extracorporeal septoplasty offers the surgeon the opportunity to correct the septum under direct visualization, shape the nasal vault and address the nasal dorsum with the ultimate goal of providing both form and function for the patient with a complex septal deviation. The study was conducted with the aim to measure the outcomes of extracorporeal septoplasty in severely deviated nasal septum, relief of symptoms (nasal obstruction), surgical complications, if any, revision, if any with objective to evaluate the functional outcome and aesthetic aspects of extracorporeal septoplasty. This was a prospective observational study of 35 patients with severe deviated nasal septum with or without external deformity of nose attending the ENT OPD between Jan 2015 and Jan 2016 at Sri Aurobindo Medical College and Post Graduate Institute, Indore (M.P.). In this study, 17 patients (48.57%) shows excellent improvement on VAS scale, out of which 13 patients shows excellent improvement and 4 patients shows good improvement on photographic assessment. 11 patients (31.43%) show good improvement on VAS as well as photographic assessment and 7 patients (20%) show moderate improvement on VAS scale and fair improvement on photographic assessment. Extracorporeal septal reconstruction is an important surgical option for the correction of the markedly deviated nasal septum. Fixation of the straightened and replanted septum at the nasal spine and dorsal septum border with the upper lateral cartilages is essential. Alpha-synuclein (α-synuclein) aggregation and impairment of the Ubiquitin proteasome system (UPS) are implicated in Parkinson's disease (PD) pathogenesis. While zinc (Zn) induces dopaminergic neurodegeneration resulting in PD phenotype, its effect on protein aggregation and UPS has not yet been deciphered. The current study investigated the role of α-synuclein aggregation and UPS in Zn-induced Parkinsonism. Additionally, levodopa (L-Dopa) response was assessed in Zn-induced Parkinsonian model to establish its closeness with idiopathic PD. Male Wistar rats were treated with zinc sulfate (Zn; 20 mg/kg; i.p.) twice weekly for 12 weeks along with respective controls. In few subsets, animals were subsequently treated with L-Dopa for 21 consecutive days following Zn exposure. A significant increase in total and free Zn content was observed in the substantia nigra of the brain of exposed groups. Zn treatment caused neurobehavioral anomalies, striatal dopamine decline, and dopaminergic neuronal cell loss accompanied with a marked increase in α-synuclein expression/aggregation and Ubiquitin-conjugated protein levels in the exposed groups. Zn exposure substantially reduced UPS-associated trypsin-like, chymotrypsin-like, and caspase-like activities along with the expression of SUG1 and β-5 subunits of UPS in the nigrostriatal tissues of exposed groups. L-Dopa treatment rescued from Zn-induced neurobehavioral deficits and restored dopamine levels towards normalcy; however, Zn-induced dopaminergic neuronal loss, reduction in tyrosine hydroxylase expression, and increase in oxidative stress were unaffected. The results suggest that Zn caused UPS impairment, resulting in α-synuclein aggregation subsequently leading to dopaminergic neurodegeneration, and that Zn-induced Parkinsonism exhibited positive L-Dopa response similar to sporadic PD.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most familiar, progressive and movement-related neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer disease. This study aimed to decipher the role of autophagy in cypermethrin-induced Parkinsonism, an animal model of PD. Indicators of autophagy [expression of beclin 1, autophagy-related protein 12 (Atg 12), unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1 (Ulk 1), p62 and lysosome-associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP 2) and conversion of microtubule-associated protein 1A/1B-light chain 3 (LC3) I to II], signalling cascade [phosphorylated (p) 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK), sirtuin 1 (Sirt 1), phosphorylated-mammalian target of rapamycin (p-mTOR), tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (TSC 2), p 317 Ulk 1 and p 757 Ulk 1 levels] and lysosome morphology were assessed in control and cypermethrin-treated rat model of PD. Autophagy markers were also measured in cypermethrin-treated neuroblastoma cells in the presence of 3-methyl adenine, a phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase (PI3K) class III inhibitor; vinblastine, an autophagosome elongation inhibitor; bafilomycin A1, an autophagolysosome and lysosome fusion/abnormal acidification inhibitor or torin 1, a mechanistic target of rapamycin inhibitor. Cypermethrin reduced LAMP 2 and increased p-AMPK and Sirt 1 without causing any change in other signalling proteins. 3-Methyl adenine did not change LC3 conversion; vinblastine and bafilomycin A1 decreased LAMP 2 expression in controls. While cypermethrin increased LC3 conversion in the presence of 3-methyl adenine, LAMP 2 reduction was more pronounced in vinblastine and bafilomycin A1-treated cells. Torin 1 normalized the expression of LAMP 2 without any change in other autophagy markers. Results demonstrate that albeit cypermethrin activates autophagosome formation, it reduces LAMP 2 expression and lysosome quality leading to autophagy inhibition.

In this study, the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method was applied for the analysis of the multiclass pesticide residues of 12 organochlorines (OCs), 9 organophosphates (OPs), 11 synthetic pyrethroids (SPs), 4 herbicides, 6 phthalates in raw tea (loose tea, branded tea and herbal tea), and tea infusion in 4 different containers (glass cup, earthen cup, plastic bag and disposal cup). In loose tea and branded tea residues, malathion (0.257 and 0.118 mg kg -1 ), cypermethrin (0.065 and 0.030 mg kg -1 ), and fenvalerate (0.032 and 0.030 mg kg -1 ) were detected, respectively. In herbal tea, residues of only cypermethrin (0.053 mg kg -1 ) and fenvalerate (0.045 mg kg -1 ) were detected. Tea infusion samples contained in a plastic bag were found to be contaminated with only dibutyl phthalate (DBP) (0.038 mg kg -1 ). Disposable cup was found to be contaminated with DBP (0.026 mg kg -1 ) and diethyl phthalate (DEP) (0.004 mg kg -1 ). Further, to know the processing behavior of pesticides, the spiked raw tea was subjected to tea infusion at different brewing times (2, 5, 10 min). The analysis demonstrated that dimethoate, dichlorvos, and malathion had shown more than 10 % of translocation at 5 min of brewing time. Further brewing for 10 min revealed the reduction in concentration of pesticides. Leaching of phthalate residues from different plastic containers was also studied at 10, 30, and 60 min. DBP, benzyl butyl phthalate (BzBP), and di-2-(ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) were leached in the tea infusion samples packed in plastic bags. On the other hand, in disposable cups, leaching of DBP, DEP, and dimethyl phthalate were found. The concentration of phthalate residues increased with retention time. Pesticide and phthalate contaminants were recorded at low quantities in few samples only.

Lichens are known to synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites having multifunctional activity in response to external environmental condition. Two common lichen extrolites, atranorin and salazinic acid, are known to afford antioxidant as well as photoprotectant nature depending on the abiotic/biotic stress. The present investigation aims to study the influence of altitudinal gradient on the quantitative profile of atranorin and salazinic acid in three lichen species, Bulbothrix setschwanensis (Zahlbr.) Hale, Everniastrum cirrhatum (Fr.) Hale and Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) Choisy, Parmeliaceae using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) technique. Samples were collected from high-altitude area, usually considered as non-polluted sites of Garhwal Himalaya. Characterization and quantification of the lichen substances in samples were carried out comparing with the standards of atranorin and salazinic acid. Results indicated significant variation in the chemical content with the rising altitude. All the three lichen species showed higher quantities of chemical substances with the altitudinal rise, while among the three lichen species, E. cirrhatum showed the highest quantity of total lichen compounds. The higher abundance and frequency of E. cirrhatum with increasing altitude as compared to B. setschwanensis and P. reticulatum may be attributed due to the presence of higher quantity of photoprotecting/antioxidant chemicals especially salazinic acid. Thus, the present study shows the prominent role of secondary metabolite in wider ecological distribution of Parmelioid lichens at higher altitudes.

Environmental toxicants viz lead or cadmium and phthalate esters (di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [DEHP], dibutyl phthalate [DBP], and diethyl phthalate [DEP]) widely found in different environmental strata are linked to deteriorating male reproductive health. The objective was to assess the relationships between the seminal lead, cadmium, and phthalate (DEHP, DBP, DEP) concentrations at environmental level and serum hormone levels and semen quality in non-occupationally exposed men and specify the effect of individual and combined exposure of toxicants on semen quality. A study of 60 male partners of couples attending the Andrology Laboratory of the Reproductive Biology Department, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, India for semen analysis to assess their inability to achieve a pregnancy was selected for the study. The results of univariate and stepwise multiple regression analysis in the unadjusted model showed a significant correlation between lead or cadmium and phthalates DEHP/DBP/DEP and sperm motility, sperm concentration, and DNA damage. After adjusting for potential confounders, an association with lead or DEHP was only observed. The present data shows that lead (Pb) or cadmium (Cd) or phthalates might independently contribute to decline in semen quality and induce DNA damage. Phthalates might influence reproductive hormone testosterone. These findings are significant in light of the fact that men are exposed to a volley of chemicals; however, due to the small sample size, our finding needs to be confirmed in a larger population.

Cytochrome P4502E1 (CYP2E1), glutathione-S-transferase A4-4 (GSTA4-4), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) are implicated in maneb- and paraquat-induced toxicity leading to various pathological conditions. The study aimed to investigate the role of CYP2E1 in maneb- and paraquat-induced oxidative stress in rat polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and its crosstalk with iNOS-mediated nitrosative stress and GSTA4-4-linked protective effect, if any and their consequent links with the nuclear factor erythoid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activation and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression. Rats were treated with/without maneb and/or paraquat for 1, 2, and 3 weeks along with vehicle controls. Subsets of rats were also treated with diallyl sulfide (DAS) or aminoguanidine (AG) along with the respective controls. Maneb and paraquat augmented the reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation (LPO) and 4-hydroxy nonenal (4-HNE) contents, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the PMNs. However, maneb and paraquat attenuated the reduced glutathione (GSH) level and the expression/activity of total GST and GST-pi. Maneb and paraquat increased the expression/activity of CYP2E1, GSTA4-4, iNOS, Nrf2 and HO-1, and nitrite content. CYP2E1 inhibitor, DAS noticeably alleviated maneb- and paraquat-induced ROS, LPO, 4-HNE, SOD, Nrf2 and HO-1, GST, GSH, and GST-pi while iNOS, nitrite content and GSTA4-4 levels were unchanged. Conversely, AG, an iNOS inhibitor, attenuated maneb- and paraquat-directed changes in nitrite, LPO, iNOS but it did not alter ROS, GSH, SOD, GST, GST-pi, Nrf2, HO-1, CYP2E1, and GSTA4-4. The results demonstrate that CYP2E1 induces iNOS-independent free radical generation and subsequently modulates the Nrf2-dependent HO-1 and 4-HNE-mediated GST expression in maneb- and paraquat-treated PMNs.

The aim of this study is to determine the possibility of using Rinodina sophodes (Ach.) Massal., a crustose lichen as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bioaccumulator for evaluation of atmospheric pollution in tropical areas of India, where few species of lichens are able to grow. PAHs were identified, quantified and compared to evaluate the potential utility of R. sophodes. The limit of detection for different PAHs was found to be 0.008-0.050 μg g( - 1). The total PAHs in different sites were ranged between 0.189 ± 0.029 and 0.494 ± 0.105 μg g( - 1). The major sources of PAHs were combustion of organic materials, traffic and vehicular exhaust (diesel and gasoline engine). Significantly higher concentration of acenaphthylene and phenanthrene indicates road traffic as major source of PAH pollution in the city. Two-way ANOVA also confirms that all PAHs content showed significant differences between all sampling sites (P 1%). This study establishes the utility of R. sophodes in monitoring the PAHs accumulation potentiality for development of effective tool and explores the most potential traits resistant to the hazardous environmental conditions in the tropical regions of north India, where no such other effective way of biomonitoring is known so far.

In order to evaluate the exposure of the northern India rural population to polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) inhalation, indoor pollution was assessed by collecting and analyzing the respirable particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 in several homes of the village Bhithauli near Lucknow, UP. The home selection was determined by a survey. Given the nature of biomass used for cooking, homes were divided into two groups, one using all kinds of biomass and the second type using plant materials only. Indoor mean concentrations of PM2.5 and associated PAHs during cooking ranged from 1.19±0.29 to 2.38±0.35 and 6.21±1.54 to 12.43±1.15 μg/m3, respectively. Similarly, PM10 and total PAHs were in the range of 3.95±1.21 to 8.81±0.78 and 7.75±1.42 to 15.77±1.05 μg/m3, respectively. The pollutant levels during cooking were significantly higher compared to the noncooking period. The study confirmed that indoor pollution depends on the kind of biomass fuel used for cooking.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are well-known ubiquitous environmental pollutants and used as plasticizers for the manufacturing of plastic products. During this exploratory study, an attempt has been made to determine the concentration and distribution of five prominent PAEs, viz. di-methyl phthalate (DMP), di-ethyl phthalate (DEP), di-butyl phthalate (DBP), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), and di-octyl phthalate (DOP) in the sediment samples of Gomti River collected from 30 different locations. Identification and quantification of PAEs were performed by high-performance liquid chromatography. The mean concentration values of DMP, DEP, DBP, DEHP, and DOP were found as 10.54, 4.57, 10.41, 31.61, and 5.16 microg/kg, respectively. Limit of detection and limit of quantification for each PAE were also calculated and found in the ranges of 0.09-0.55 and 0.28-1.67 microg/kg. DEHP was the most frequently detected PAE (present in 93.3% samples); however, DOP was found only in 36.7% samples.

Inhalation of emissions from petrol and diesel exhaust particulates is associated with potentially severe biological effects. In the present study, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were identified from smokes released by the automobile exhaust from petrol and diesel. Intensive sampling of unleaded petrol and diesel exhaust were done by using 800-cm(3) motor car and 3,455-cm(3) vehicle, respectively. The particulate phase of exhaust was collected on Whatman filter paper. Particulate matters were extracted from filter paper by using Soxhlet. PAHs were identified from particulate matter by reverse phase high performance liquid chromatography using C(18) column. A total of 14 PAHs were identified in petrol and 13 in case of diesel sample after comparing to standard samples for PAH estimation. These inhalable PAHs released from diesel and petrol exhaust are known to possess mutagenic and carcinogenic activity, which may present a potential risk for the health of inhabitants.

Two PCP-degrading bacterial strains, Bacillus cereus (ITRC-S6) and Serratia marcescens (ITRC-S7) were used for the treatment of pulp and paper mill effluent at conditions; 1.0% glucose and 0.5% peptone at 30 +/- 1 degrees C at 120 rpm for 168 h of incubation. These two bacterial strains effectively reduced colour (45-52%), lignin (30-42%), BOD (40-70%), COD (50-60%), total phenol (32-40%) and PCP (85-90%) within 168 h of incubation. However, the highest reduction in colour (62%), lignin (54%), BOD (70%), COD (90%), total phenol (90%) and PCP (100%) was recorded by mixed culture treatment. The bacterial mechanism for the degradation of pulp and paper mill effluent may be explained by an increase in the cells biomass using added co-substrates resulting liberation of significant amount of chloride due to bacterial dechlorination of chlorolignins and chlorophenols this showed reduction in colour, lignin and toxicity in the effluent. Further, GC-MS analysis of ethyl acetate-extractable compounds from treated pulp paper mill effluent reinforces the bacterium capability for the degradation of lignin and pentachlorophenol, as many aromatic compounds such as 2-chlorophenol, 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol and tetrachlorohydroquinone, 6-chlorohydroxyquinol and tetrachlorohydroquinone detected which were not present in the untreated effluent.

Seven aerobic bacterial strains were isolated from pulp paper mill waste and screened for pentachlorophenol (PCP) tolerance on PCP containing mineral salt agar medium (MSM). The organism was characterized by 16S rDNA sequencing which showed 99.7% sequence similarity with Serratia marcescens. PCP degradation was routinely monitored with spectrophotometric analysis and further confirmed by HPLC analysis. Among seven strains, ITRC S7 was found to degrade up to 90.33% of 1.127 mM (300 mg/l) of PCP and simultaneous release of chloride ion (2.435 mM) emphasized the bacterial dechlorination in the medium in presence of glucose as an additional carbon and energy source under optimized condition within 168 h incubation. In absence of glucose bacterium was unable to utilize PCP indicating the phenomenon of co-metabolism. Bacterium was identified as S. marcescens (AY927692), was a novel and potential aerobic bacterial strain capable of degrading PCP in axenic condition. Further, this strain may be used for bioremediation of PCP containing pulp paper mill waste in the environment.
