Abstract: The Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE)-Pilot experiment is an initial phase of the AMoRE search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $$^{100}$$ 100 Mo, with the purpose of investigating the level and sources of backgrounds. Searches for neutrinoless double beta decay generally require ultimately low backgrounds. Surface $$\alpha $$ α decays on the crystals themselves or nearby materials can deposit a continuum of energies that can be as high as the Q-value of the decay itself and may fall in the region of interest (ROI). To understand these background events, we studied backgrounds from radioactive contaminations internal to and on the surface of the crystals or nearby materials with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, we report on the measured $$\alpha $$ α energy spectra fitted with the corresponding simulated spectra for six crystal detectors, where sources of background contributions could be identified through high energy $$\alpha $$ α peaks and continuum parts in the energy spectrum for both internal and surface contaminations. We determine the low-energy contributions from internal and surface $$\alpha $$ α contaminations by extrapolating from the $$\alpha $$ α background fitting model.

Abstract: Creating a sustainable and effective approach to handling organic contaminants from industrial waste is an ongoing problem. In the present study, ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were synthesized under a controlled ultrasound cavitation technique using the extract of Passiflora foetida fruit peels, which act as a reducing (i.e., reduction of metal salt) and stabilizing agent. The formation of monodispersed and hexagonal morphology (average size approximately 58 nm with BET surface area 30.83m2/g). The synthesized ZnO NPs were characterized by a various technique such as UV–visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Dynamic light scattering (DLS). Further, the XRD pattern confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite structure of synthesized ZnONPs. The ZnO NPs exhibit excellent degradation efficiency towards organic pollutant dyes, i.e., Methylene blue (MB) (93.25% removal) and Rhodamine B (91.06% removal) in 70 min, under natural sunlight with apparent rate constant 0.0337 min−1 (R2 = 0.9749) and 0.0347 min−1 (R2 = 0.9026) respectively.Zeta potential study shows the presence of a negative charge on the surface of ZnO NPs. The use of green synthesized ZnO NPs is a good choice for wastewater treatment, given their high reusability and photocatalytic efficiency, along with adaptability to green synthesis.

Abstract: Funder: University of Cambridge, Scars are the normal outcome of wound repair and involve a co-ordinated inflammatory and fibrotic process. When a scar does not resolve, uncontrolled chronic inflammation can persist and elicits excessive scarring that leads to a range of abnormal phenotypes such as hypertrophic and keloid scars. These pathologies result in significant impairment of quality of life over a long period of time. Existing treatment options are generally unsatisfactory, and there is mounting interest in innovative cell-based therapies. Despite the interest in mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), there is yet to be a human clinical trial that investigates the potential of MSCs in treating abnormal scarring. A synthesis of existing evidence of animal studies may therefore provide insight into the barriers to human application. The aim of this PRISMA systematic review was to evaluate the effectiveness of MSC transplantation in the treatment of hypertrophic and keloid scars in in vivo models. A total of 11 case-control studies were identified that treated a total of 156 subjects with MSCs or MSC-conditioned media. Ten studies assessed hypertrophic scars, and one looked at keloid scars. All studies evaluated scars in terms of macroscopic and histological appearances and most incorporated immunohistochemistry. The included studies all found improvements in the above outcomes with MSC or MSC-conditioned media without complications. The studies reviewed support a role for MSC therapy in treating scars that needs further exploration. The transferability of these findings to humans is limited by factors such as the reliability and validity of the disease model, the need to identify the optimal MSC cell source, and the outcome measures employed.

4. A Clinical Casebook of Sleep Disorders in Women

Abstract: Sleep disorders are very common among women during their lifespan, presenting in isolation or in combination with other illnesses particularly psychiatric and neurologic disorders. Pregnancy-related sleep disorders pose an interesting dilemma as this is a transient phase; these are associated with potential long-term effects on maternal and fetal health. Menopause and pre-menopausal stages lead to a significant change in sleep architecture, sometimes associated with insomnia with or without sleep related breathing disorder. Sleep architecture in men and women varies due to significant hormonal differences between the genders. However, sleep complaints are disproportionately higher among women. This book presents 20 clinical cases to understand the differences in presentation of symptoms and treatment options for various sleep disorders that are more commonly noted among women. These cases cover a spectrum of sleep related breathing disorders, sleep related movement disorders, hypersomnias, parasomnias, issues of sleep fragmentation leading to insomnia in association with hormonal changes and some unique cases encountered in our clinical practices. This compilation of interesting clinical cases presents trainees and experienced physicians with a useful guide to assist in their clinical practices and will stimulate further research and studies.

Abstract: This paper presents the measurements of $$\pi ^{\pm }$$ π± , $$\mathrm {K}^{\pm }$$ K± , $$\text {p}$$ p and $$\overline{\mathrm{p}} $$ p¯ transverse momentum ($$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT ) spectra as a function of charged-particle multiplicity density in proton–proton (pp) collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 13\ \text {TeV}$$ s=13TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. Such study allows us to isolate the center-of-mass energy dependence of light-flavour particle production. The measurements reported here cover a $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT range from 0.1 to 20 $$\text {GeV}/c$$ GeV/c and are done in the rapidity interval $$|y||y|<0.5 . The $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT -differential particle ratios exhibit an evolution with multiplicity, similar to that observed in pp collisions at $$\sqrt{s}\ =\ 7\ \text {TeV}$$ s=7TeV , which is qualitatively described by some of the hydrodynamical and pQCD-inspired models discussed in this paper. Furthermore, the $$p_{\text {T}}$$ pT -integrated hadron-to-pion yield ratios measured in pp collisions at two different center-of-mass energies are consistent when compared at similar multiplicities. This also extends to strange and multi-strange hadrons, suggesting that, at LHC energies, particle hadrochemistry scales with particle multiplicity the same way under different collision energies and colliding systems.

Abstract: Inclusive J/ψ production is studied in p-Pb interactions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision sNN=8.16 $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=8.16 $$ TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The J/ψ meson is reconstructed, via its decay to a muon pair, in the centre-of-mass rapidity intervals 2.03 < y cms < 3.53 and −4.46 < y cms < −2.96, where positive and negative y cms refer to the p-going and Pb-going direction, respectively. The transverse momentum coverage is p T < 20 GeV/c. In this paper, y cms- and p T-differential cross sections for inclusive J/ψ production are presented, and the corresponding nuclear modification factors R pPb are shown. Forward results show a suppression of the J/ψ yield with respect to pp collisions, concentrated in the region p T ≲ 5 GeV/c. At backward rapidity no significant suppression is observed. The results are compared to previous measurements by ALICE in p-Pb collisions at sNN=5.02 $$ \sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}=5.02 $$ TeV and to theoretical calculations. Finally, the ratios R FB between forward- and backward-y cms R pPb values are shown and discussed.

This growing interest is attested to by the success of both The International Journal of Plasticity, which after its inception rapidly became the leading journal for plasticity research, and the series ofInternational Symposia on Plasticity and Its Current Applications, which is now the premier international forum for plasticity research dissemination. The First International Symposium on Plasticity and Its Current Applications was conceived and organized by Professor Akhtar S. It was attended by over one hundred scientists from fifteen countries.'Plasticity'89: the Second International Symposium on Plasticity and Its Current Applications'was held at Mie University (Tsu, Japan) from July 31 to August 4, 1989; this symposium was co-chaired by Professors Khan and Tokuda. The main emphasis of this meeting was on dynamic plasticity and micromechanics, although it included other aspects of plasticity as well. It was attended by over two hundred researchers from twenty-three nations.

Abstract: In this paper, the exact and explicit expressions for single, product, and conditional moments for inverted Kumaraswamy distribution using dual generalized order statistics (dgos) are derived. Further, the expression for maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) and uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE) for the parameters of inverted Kumaraswamy distribution based on dgos are deduced. Also, we obtained the results for order statistics and lower record values by putting some specific values of the parameters of dgos. Finally, a simulation study is carried out for illustrative purpose.

Abstract: In this paper, exponential distribution is characterized by normalized spacing of generalized order statistics (gos) using Meijer's G-function. While the necessary part of the theorem was given by U. Kamps, E. Cramer, Statistics. 35 (2001), 269–280, we have given an easy proof of sufficient part in this paper. This paper contains the result of characterization of exponential distribution through normalized spacing of order statistics, sequential order statistics, progressive type II censoring and record values. Also, by simulation study, we have shown that the confidence interval based on upper records is shorter in length than asymptotic confidence interval constructed by maximum likelihood estimate.

14. Fall-related injuries in a low-income setting: Results from a pilot injury surveillance system in Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Abstract: This study assessed the characteristics and emergency care outcomes of fall-related injuries in Pakistan. This study included all fall-related injury cases presenting to emergency departments (EDs) of the three teaching hospitals in Rawalpindi city from July 2007 to June 2008. Out of 62,530 injury cases, 43.4% (N = 27,109) were due to falls. Children (0–15 years) accounted for about two out of five of all fall-related injuries. Compared with women aged 16–45 years, more men of the same age group presented with fall-related injuries (50% vs. 42%); however, compared with men aged 45 years or more, about twice as many women of the same age group presented with fall-related injuries (16% vs. 9%, P < 0.001). For each reported death due to falls (n = 57), 43 more were admitted (n = 2443, 9%), and another 423 were discharged from the EDs (n = 24,142, 91%). Factors associated with death or inpatient admission were: aged 0–15 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 1.35), aged 45 years or more (aOR = 1.94), male gender (aOR = 1.15), falls occurring at home (aOR = 3.38), in markets (aOR = 1.43), on work sites (aOR = 4.80), and during playing activities (aOR = 1.68). This ED-based surveillance study indicated that fall prevention interventions in Pakistan should target children, older adult women, homes, and work sites.

Abstract: The multiplicity dependence of jet production in pp collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of root s = 13 TeV is studied for the first time. Jets are reconstructed from charged particles using the anti-k(T) algorithm with resolution parameters R varying from 0.2 to 0.7. The jets are measured in the pseudorapidity range vertical bar eta(jet)vertical bar < 0.9 - R and in the transverse momentum range 5 < P-T,jet(ch) < 140 GeV/c. The multiplicity intervals are categorised by the ALICE forward detector V0. The p(T) differential cross section of charged-particle jets are compared to leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) calculations. It is found that the data are better described by the NLO calculation, although the NLO prediction overestimates the jet cross section below 20 GeV/c. The cross section ratios for different R are also measured and compared to model calculations. These measurements provide insights into the angular dependence of jet fragmentation. The jet yield increases with increasing self-normalised charged-particle multiplicity. This increase shows only a weak dependence on jet transverse momentum and resolution parameter at the highest multiplicity. While such behaviour is qualitatively described by the present version of PYTHIA, quantitative description may require implementing new mechanisms for multi-particle production in hadronic collisions.

16. Comprehensive assessment of fish diversity and water health in river Indus, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Abstract: Fish diversity and water quality are vital indicators of the health of freshwater ecosystems, however these systems are increasingly threatened by environmental changes and anthropogenic activities. This investigation aimed to assess the fish diversity and evaluate the physicochemical parameters of water at Ghazi Swabi near Tarbela Dam, River Indus, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, between March and June 2020. Monthly water samples were collected and analyzed for various physicochemical parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), pH, turbidity, salinity, and concentrations of heavy metals including lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). Using various nets and traps the fish specimens were collected with the help of local fishermen. Morphometric and meristic analyses were conducted to identify the species, while systematic keys were used to remove misidentifications. A total of 110 fish specimens were collected, representing 7 species across 6 genera, 3 families, and 3 orders. The family Cyprinidae was the most abundant, with species including Puntius conchonius, Puntius waageni, Crossocheilus diplocheilus, Barilius modestus, and Aspidoparia morar. The Belonidae family was represented by Xenentodon cancila, and the Ambassidae family by Chanda nama. Physicochemical analysis showed that the water quality remained within permissible limits for aquatic life, however higher levels of certain heavy metals were detected, which may pose long-term risks. The study concluded that the fish diversity at Ghazi Swabi near Tarbela Dam reflects a moderately healthy ecosystem, the presence of heavy metals in the water raises concerns about future ecological health. Regular monitoring and mitigation efforts are recommended to preserve biodiversity and maintain water quality. Abstract: Background: To evaluate 5-year effect of laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy (LVSG) versus laparoscopic roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) solely based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs)., Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of 5-year postoperative GERD data comparing LVSG and LRYGB in adults were undertaken. Electronic databases were searched from January 2015 to March 2024 for publications meeting inclusion criteria. The Hartung-Knapp-Sidik-Jonkman random effects model was applied to estimate pooled odds ratio where meta-analysis was possible. Bias and certainty of evidence were assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2 and GRADE., Results: Five RCTs were analysed (LVSG n = 554, LRYGB n = 539). LVSG was associated with increased adverse GERD outcomes compared to LRYGB at 5 years. The odds for revisional surgery to treat GERD in LVSG patients were 11 times higher compared to LRYGB (OR 11.47, 95% CI 1.83 to 71.69; p = 0.02; I 2 = 0% High level of certainty). Similarly pharmacological management for increasing GERD was significantly more frequent in LVSG patients compared to LRYGB (OR 3.89, 95% CI 2.31 to 6.55; p ≤ 0.01; I 2 = 0% Moderate level of certainty). Overall, LVSG was associated with significantly more interventions (both medical and surgical) for either worsening GERD and/or development of de novo GERD compared to LRYGB (OR 5.98, 95% CI 3.48 to 10.29; p ≤ 0.01; I 2 = 0%) Moderate level of certainty)., Conclusions: The development and worsening of GERD symptoms are frequently associated with LVSG compared to LRYGB at 5 years postoperatively requiring either initiation or increase of pharmacotherapy or failing that revisional bariatric surgery. Abstract: Purpose: Glioblastoma (GBM), a lethal primary adult malignancy, is difficult to treat because of the restrictive nature of the blood-brain barrier (BBB), blood-tumor barrier (BTB), and the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME). Since pulsed focused ultrasound (pFUS) is currently used to improve therapeutic deliveries across these barriers, this study aims to characterize the impact of pFUS on the TME proteomics upon opening the BBB and BTB., Methods: We utilized MRI-guided, pFUS with ultrasound contrast microbubbles (termed 'pFUS' herein) to selectively and transiently open the BBB and BTB investigating proteomic modifications in the TME. Utilizing an orthotopically-allografted mouse GL26 GBM model (Ccr2RFP/wt - Cx3cr1GFP/wt), pFUS's effect on glioma proteomics was evaluated using a Luminex 48-plex assay., Results: pFUS treated tumors exhibited increases in pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and trophic factors (CCTFs). Proteomic changes in tumors tend to peak at 24 h after single pFUS session (1x), with levels then plateauing or declining over the subsequent 24 h. Tumors receiving three pFUS sessions (3x) showed elevated CCTFs levels peaking as early as 6 h after the third session., Conclusions: pFUS together with microbubbles induces a sterile inflammatory response in the TME of a mouse GBM tumor. Moreover, this proinflammatory shift can be sustained and perhaps primed for more rapid responses upon multiple sessions of pFUS. These findings raise the intriguing potential that pFUS-induced BBB and BTB opening may not only be effective in facilitating the therapeutic agent delivery, but also be harnessed to modify the TME to assist immunotherapies in overcoming immune evasion in GBM., (© 2024. 19. Critical Appraisal of the 2017 Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology with Cytohistological Concordance and Estimation of Risk of Malignancy - An Institutional Study.

Abstract: Aim: Bethesda System for reporting thyroid cytopathology established in 2009 was updated for the first time in 2017. Since its introduction very few studies have been done on the utility of recently introduced "The 2017 Bethesda System for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology" (TBSRTC II) and estimation of risk of malignancy in various categories., Material and Methods: This was a prospective study done on thyroid lesions in which lesions were evaluated cytologically and classified according to TBSRTC II. Histopathological correlation was done, wherever possible. ROM was calculated for each Bethesda category in both ways as per TBSRTC II i.e. with NIFTP and excluding NIFTP from the malignant category., Results: Using 2017 TBSRTC, 190 cases of thyroid FNACs were classified into 6 diagnostic categories. Cytohistological correlation was available in 60 cases. ROM was calculated which changed only in category III and V as only these two categories showed one case each of NIFTP. However there was an overestimation of ROM in category II and III as there are selection biases and not all thyroid nodules underwent surgical resections., Conclusion: To conclude, the risk of malignancy calculated in two ways in the recent 2017 Bethesda system may have higher clinical relevance as those lesions with high ROM are defined for surgical excision. Thus we recommend that "The 2017 Bethesda system for Reporting Thyroid Cytopathology" should be implemented uniformly in our country as it provides a homogenous and standardised terminology resulting in better management of patients with thyroid nodular disease., (© Association of Otolaryngologists of India 2024. Abstract: Intracoronary continuous thermodilution has been recently proposed as an invasive method to quantify absolute coronary flow (Q abs ) and resistance (R abs ) in vivo. The aim of the present study is to develop and validate of a novel pressure-wire- and microcatheter-free surrogate of coronary flow and resistance derived from a standard coronary angiogram. Angiography derived coronary flow (Q angio ) and resistance (R angio) was prospectively validated in a two-center cohort of patients from Oxford Heart Centre and the Essex Cardiothoracic Centre. Q abs and R abs were measured during resting and hyperemic conditions with continuous thermodilution using the Rayflow microcatheter. Q angio and R angio were computed from the diagnostic coronary angiogram in a blinded fashion in resting and hyperemic conditions. A total of 62 patients and 115 vessels were included in the present analysis. The median Q abs at rest was 75 ml/min (53-95) and 151 ml/min (105-203) during hyperemia; Q angio at rest was 84 ml/min (66-108) and 154 ml/min (115-195) during hyperemia. There was a strong correlation between Q abs and Q angio (R = 0,72; p < 0.001, R = 0,86; p < 0.001 respectively) with satisfactory interclass correlation (0.841, 95% CI 0.509-0.957; p = 0.0003). The median R abs was 1111 mmHg/(L/min) (830-1581.4) at rest and 454 mmHg/(L/min) (348-610) during hyperemia; angiographic resistance (R angio ) was 937.4 mmHg/(L/min) (695.4-1261.9) at rest and 492.4 mmHg/(L/min) (406-697) during hyperemia. There was a strong correlation between R abs and R angio in both conditions (R = 0,81; p < 0.001 and R = 0,78; p < 0.001 respectively). Abstract: Background: Extreme oncoplasty is a breast-conserving operation using oncoplastic techniques in a patient who does not meet the traditional criteria for breast conservation and in whom most physicians would suggest a mastectomy. These tumors are generally multicentric and/or multifocal, they span more than 50 mm, or they can be large recurrences in a previously irradiated breast., Methods: A prospective single institution database was queried from 2008 through mid 2023 for patients who met the criteria for extreme oncoplasty and were treated with excision plus whole-breast radiation therapy (WBRT) or mastectomy without WBRT. Patients with recurrent breast cancer were excluded. Endpoints were local, regional, and distant recurrence as well as overall and breast-cancer-specific survival., Results: 272 patients were treated with oncoplastic mammaplasty, using a standard or split reduction excision followed by postoperative WBRT. An additional 101 patients elected to be treated with mastectomy without postoperative radiation therapy. With a median follow-up of 7 years, there were no significant differences in local, regional, or distant recurrence, nor in breast-cancer-specific survival or overall survival., Conclusions: We strongly support extreme oncoplasty plus WBRT as the default procedure of choice for patients with large multifocal/multicentric lesions amenable to reconstruction with volume displacement mammaplasty., (© 2024. Abstract: Background: Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) followed by adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) is a standard treatment for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). A low-risk patient subset that does not benefit from RT has not yet been clearly identified. The DCISionRT test provides a clinically validated decision score (DS), which is prognostic of 10-year in-breast recurrence rates (invasive and non-invasive) and is also predictive of RT benefit. This analysis presents final outcomes from the PREDICT prospective registry trial aiming to determine how often the DCISionRT test changes radiation treatment recommendations., Methods: Overall, 2496 patients were enrolled from February 2018 to January 2022 at 63 academic and community practice sites and received DCISionRT as part of their care plan. Treating physicians reported their treatment recommendations pre- and post-test as well as the patient's preference. The primary endpoint was to identify the percentage of patients where testing led to a change in RT recommendation. The impact of the test on RT treatment recommendation was physician specialty, treatment settings, individual clinical/pathological features and RTOG 9804 like criteria. Multivariate logisitc regression analysis was used to estimate the odds ratio (ORs) for factors associated with the post-test RT recommendations., Results: RT recommendation changed 38% of women, resulting in a 20% decrease in the overall recommendation of RT (p < 0.001). Of those women initially recommended no RT (n = 583), 31% were recommended RT post-test. The recommendation for RT post-test increased with increasing DS, from 29% to 66% to 91% for DS <2, DS 2-4, and DS >4, respectively. On multivariable analysis, DS had the strongest influence on final RT recommendation (odds ratio 22.2, 95% confidence interval 16.3-30.7), which was eightfold greater than clinicopathologic features. Furthermore, there was an overall change in the recommendation to receive RT in 42% of those patients meeting RTOG 9804-like low-risk criteria., Conclusions: The test results provided information that changes treatment recommendations both for and against RT use in large population of women with DCIS treated in a variety of clinical settings. Overall, clinicians changed their recommendations to include or omit RT for 38% of women based on the test results. Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary Bacillus subtilis supplementation on gut microbiota diversity, digestive enzyme activity, and Toll-like receptor (TLR) expression in broiler chickens. A total of 240 "817" crossbred broiler chickens were randomly assigned to four groups: control (basal diet, BD), group I (BD + 300 g/d B. subtilis at 1.08 × 107 CFU/kg), group II (BD + 600 g/d B. subtilis at 2.16 × 107 CFU/kg), and group III (BD + 900 g/d B. subtilis at 3.24 × 107 CFU/kg). Gut microbiota analysis revealed significant improvements in the abundance of specific microorganisms in the treatment groups, with distinct variations in the core microorganisms between the groups. Notably, protease activity in the ileum was significantly increased in groups II (22.59%; p < 0.01) and III (14.49%; p < 0.05) compared to that in the control group. Moreover, significant up-regulation of TLR1A and TLR7 expression was observed in jejunum and cecum of the treated groups. Additionally, the TLR1B expression in the ileum was significantly increased. Furthermore, TLR2A and MyD88 transcription levels were significantly elevated in the jejunum, liver, spleen, and kidneys of experimental groups. Modulations in the expression of various TLR's (TLR2B, TLR3, TLR4, TLR15, and TLR21) were also observed in different organs. The spleen and kidney of B. subtilis-supplemented chickens exhibited upregulated expression of the proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β. Dietary supplementation with B. subtilis in broiler chickens improved the gut microbiota diversity and significantly upregulated TLR's expression in various organs. Abstract: Proteus penneri (P. penneri) is a bacillus-shaped, gram-negative, facultative anaerobe bacterium that is primarily an invasive pathogen and the etiological agent of several hospital-associated infections. P. penneri strains are naturally resistant to macrolides, amoxicillin, oxacillin, penicillin G, and cephalosporins; in addition, no vaccines are available against these strains. This warrants efforts to propose a theoretical based multi-epitope vaccine construct to prevent pathogen infections. In this research, reverse vaccinology bioinformatics and immunoinformatics approaches were adopted for vaccine target identification and construction of a multi-epitope vaccine. In the first phase, a core proteome dataset of the targeted pathogen was obtained using the NCBI database and subjected to bacterial pan-genome analysis using bacterial pan-genome analysis (BPGA) to predict core protein sequences which were then used to find good vaccine target candidates. This identified two proteins, Hcp family type VI secretion system effector and superoxide dismutase family protein, as promising vaccine targets. Afterward using the IEDB database, different B-cell and T-cell epitopes were predicted. A set of four epitopes "KGSVNVQDRE, NTGKLTGTR, IIHSDSWNER, and KDGKPVPALK" were chosen for the development of a multi-epitope vaccine construct. A 183 amino acid long vaccine design was built along with "EAAAK" and "GPGPG" linkers and a cholera toxin B-subunit adjuvant. The designed vaccine model comprised immunodominant, non-toxic, non-allergenic, and physicochemical stable epitopes. The model vaccine was docked with MHC-I, MHC-II, and TLR-4 immune cell receptors using the Cluspro2.0 web server. The binding energy score of the vaccine was - 654.7 kcal/mol for MHC-I, - 738.4 kcal/mol for MHC-II, and - 695.0 kcal/mol for TLR-4. A molecular dynamic simulation was done using AMBER v20 package for dynamic behavior in nanoseconds. Additionally, MM-PBSA binding free energy analysis was done to test intermolecular binding interactions between docked molecules. The MM-GBSA net binding energy score was - 148.00 kcal/mol, - 118.00 kcal/mol, and - 127.00 kcal/mol for vaccine with TLR-4, MHC-I, and MHC-II, respectively. Overall, these in silico-based predictions indicated that the vaccine is highly promising in terms of developing protective immunity against P. penneri. Abstract: Cellular senescence is a crucial process of irreversible cell-cycle arrest, in which cells remain alive, but permanently unable to proliferate in response to distinct types of stressors. Accumulating evidence suggests that DNA damage builds over time and triggers DNA damage response signaling, leading to cellular senescence. Cellular senescence serves as a platform for the perpetuation of inflammatory responses and is central to numerous age-related diseases. Defects in DNA repair genes or senescence can cause premature aging disease. Therapeutic approaches limiting DNA damage or senescence contribute to a rescued phenotype of longevity and neuroprotection, thus suggesting a mechanistic interaction between DNA damage and senescence. Here, we offer a unique perspective on the crosstalk between the DNA damage response pathway and senescence as well as their contribution to age-related diseases. We further summarize recent progress on the mechanisms and therapeutics of senescence, address existing challenges, and offering new insights and future directions in the senescence field., (© 2024. Abstract: Background: There is little international data on morbidity and mortality of surgery for perforated peptic ulcer (PPU). This study aimed to understand the global 30-day morbidity and mortality of patients undergoing surgery for PPU and to identify variables associated with these., Method: We performed an international study of adults (≥ 18 years) who underwent surgery for PPU from 1st January 2022 to 30th June 2022. Patients who were treated conservatively or had an underlying gastric cancer were excluded. Patients were divided into subgroups according to age (≤ 50 and > 50 years) and time from onset of symptoms to hospital presentation (≤ 24 and > 24 h). Univariate and Multivariate analyses were carried out to identify factors associated with higher 30-day morbidity and mortality., Results: 1874 patients from 159 centres across 52 countries were included. 78.3% (n = 1467) of the patients were males and the median (IQR) age was 49 years (25). Thirty-day morbidity and mortality were 48.5% (n = 910) and 9.3% (n = 174) respectively. Median (IQR) hospital stay was 7 (5) days. Open surgery was performed in 80% (n = 1505) of the cohort. Age > 50 years [(OR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.4-2), (OR = 4.7, 95% CI 3.1-7.6)], female gender [(OR = 1.8, 95% CI 1.4-2.3), (OR = 1.9, 95% CI 1.3-2.9)], shock on admission [(OR = 2.1, 95% CI 1.7-2.7), (OR = 4.8, 95% CI 3.2-7.1)], and acute kidney injury [(OR = 2.5, 95% CI 1.9-3.2), (OR = 3.9), 95% CI 2.7-5.6)] were associated with both 30-day morbidity and mortality. Delayed presentation was associated with 30-day morbidity [OR = 1.3, 95% CI 1.1-1.6], but not mortality., Conclusions: This study showed that surgery for PPU was associated with high 30-day morbidity and mortality rate. Abstract: The pervasive presence of microplastics in various settings, such as freshwater and marine ecosystems, has sparked serious concerns. Microplastics can operate as possible transporters for hazardous trace elements or microbes, even though they are not naturally able to actively absorb these compounds. The binding sites on the plastic's surface or the complexes that are formed with the organic material on the plastic are how this adsorption process takes place. Microplastics' surfaces also seem to be attractive to microorganisms, such as bacteria and algae. Microorganisms can adhere to the rough surface of microplastics, which facilitates their colonization and formation of biofilms. Numerous bacteria, including ones that have the ability to absorb hazardous trace elements, can be found in these biofilms. Microplastics and microbes can interact in ways that are advantageous and detrimental. Microplastics have the ability to act as a substrate for microbial growth, which could lead to an increase in the quantity of microorganisms in the surrounding environment. On the other hand, microplastics may make it easier for microbes to spread to new areas, which could help dangerous or deadly species proliferate. Research is still ongoing to determine the degree to which microplastics serve as carriers of microbes and hazardous trace elements. Comprehending the implications of microplastics, pollutants, and microorganisms in a variety of environmental conditions is difficult due to their complex interplay. Abstract: Endometriosis, affecting approximately 10% of reproductive-aged women globally, poses significant challenges, including chronic pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and infertility. In low- and middle-income countries like India, accessibility to affordable infertility care remains a concern. This multicenter prospective cohort study, conducted across six tertiary care hospitals in India from 2017 to 2022, aims to explore the natural progression of conception and pregnancy outcomes in women with endometriosis. Of the 257 participants, 19.1% conceived during the study, revealing significant geographic and income-based variations (p < 0.001, p = 0.01). Dysmenorrhea (p < 0.001) and dyspareunia (p=0.027) were correlated with conception, while no such associations were found with chronic pelvic pain or menstrual factors. Lesion type, number, and severity showed no conclusive link with conception. Natural conception occurred in 70% of cases, with an average post-surgery conception time of 282.1 days. Live birth rate was 85.7%, while complications included placenta previa (16.4%), preeclampsia (4.1%), and preterm births (4.1%). This study, one of the first in India on endometriosis-related fertility progression, emphasizes the need for comprehensive understanding and management of conception and pregnancy outcomes. Abstract: Aluminum (Al) toxicity poses a significant challenge to agricultural productivity, particularly in acidic soils. The banana crop, predominantly cultivated in tropical and subtropical climates, often grapples with low pH and Al toxicity. This study seeks to explore the differential responses of two banana genotypes with varying Al tolerance (Baodao and Baxi) to Al exposure (100 and 500 µM) for 24 h. Microscopic analysis uncovered distinctive structural modifications in root cells, with Baodao displaying more severe alterations in response to Al stress. There was higher superoxide (O 2 -. ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) production and lipid peroxidation in Baodao indicating enhanced oxidative stress and membrane damage. Al accumulation in root tips was higher in Baxi than Baodao, while the roots of Baodao had a higher accumulation of callose. Nutrient content analysis revealed alterations in ion levels, highlighting the impact of Al exposure on nutrient uptake and homeostasis. In summary, Al differentially affects callose deposition, which, in turn, leads to Al uptake and nutrient homeostasis alteration in two contrasting banana genotypes. Abstract: Auditory steady-state response (ASSR) has been studied as a potential biomarker for abnormal auditory sensory processing in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with mixed results. Motivated by prior somatosensory findings of group differences in inter-trial coherence (ITC) between ASD and typically developing (TD) individuals at twice the steady-state stimulation frequency, we examined ASSR at 25 and 50 as well as 43 and 86 Hz in response to 25-Hz and 43-Hz auditory stimuli, respectively, using magnetoencephalography. Data were recorded from 22 ASD and 31 TD children, ages 6-17 years. ITC measures showed prominent ASSRs at the stimulation and double frequencies, without significant group differences. These results do not support ASSR as a robust ASD biomarker of abnormal auditory processing in ASD. Furthermore, the previously observed atypical double-frequency somatosensory response in ASD did not generalize to the auditory modality. Abstract: Study Objectives: Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) is an effective surgical option for patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). As a relatively new treatment option, patients may turn to the Internet to learn more. However, online patient education materials (OPEMs) on MMA may be written at a higher literacy level than recommended for patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the readability of OPEMs on MMA., Methods: A Google search of "maxillomandibular advancement" was performed, and the first 100 results were screened. Websites that met eligibility criteria were analyzed for their readability using the Automated Readability Index (ARI), Coleman-Liau Index (CLI), Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level (FKGL), Gunning Fog (GF), and Simple Measure of Gobbledygook (SMOG) and compared to the recommended sixth-grade reading level using one-tailed t tests. Readability scores were compared based on the type of website, including hospitals/universities or physician clinics, using ANOVA tests., Results: The mean (SD) for ARI, CLI, FKGL, GF, and SMOG was 11.91 (2.43), 13.42 (1.81), 11.91 (2.06), 14.32 (2.34), and 13.99 (1.56), respectively. All readability scores were significantly higher than a sixth-grade reading level (p < 0.001). After comparing readability scores between different website types (university/hospital, clinic, and other), there was no statistical difference found., Conclusions: The available OPEMs on MMA surgery for OSA are above the recommended sixth-grade reading level. Abstract: This study investigates the effect of supplementation of Perilla seeds (PS) on the performance, egg quality, blood biochemical parameters, and egg yolk fatty acids composition in the diet of egg-laying chicken. A total of 1600 Lohmann laying hens were randomly assigned to four different groups with 4 replicates each (100 chickens/replicate) and were subjected to varying PS concentrations (PS0, PS6, PS12, and PS18; 0%, 6%, 12%, and 18%, respectively) for four weeks, including an acclimation period of one week. The results showed no significant differences among the groups for average egg weight (P > 0.005). The laying rate (%), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and average feed intake (AFI) decreased significantly for birds fed on 18% PS as compared to the other treatments (P < 0.005). Haugh unit, albumin height, egg-shape index and eggshell thickness among hens fed PS diets were greater averaging 80.53, 7.00, 1.29, 0.34 compared to 76.84, 6.86, 1.25 and 0.32 from Control hen eggs (P < 0.05). Serum analysis showed a trend towards elevated levels of glucose (Glu), total protein (TP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) among treatments. Total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) decreased for the birds fed on 6% PS. The fatty acid composition of egg yolk showed a substantial reduction for α-linolenic acid and docosahexaenoic acid increased significantly by the incorporating PS in the diet (P < 0.001). PS incorporation in diets resulted in significant improvements in both performance indicators and greater amounts of α-linolenic acid and DHA in egg yolks. These findings indicate that PS at 6% inclusion has the potential to improve fatty acid profiles of egg yolk without any adverse effect on performance of egg quality., (© 2024. Abstract: Due to rapid expansion in the global economy and industrialization, PM 2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter) pollution has become a key environmental issue. The public health and social development directly affected by high PM 2.5 levels. In this paper, ambient PM 2.5 concentrations along with meteorological data are forecasted using time series models, including random forest (RF), prophet forecasting model (PFM), and autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) in Anhui province, China. The results indicate that the RF model outperformed the PFM and ARIMA in the prediction of PM 2.5 concentrations, with cross-validation coefficients of determination R 2 , RMSE, and MAE values of 0.83, 10.39 µg/m 3 , and 6.83 µg/m 3 , respectively. PFM achieved the average results (R 2 = 0.71, RMSE = 13.90 µg/m 3 , and MAE = 9.05 µg/m 3 ), while the predicted results by ARIMA are comparatively poorer (R 2 = 0.64, RMSE = 15.85 µg/m 3 , and MAE = 10.59 µg/m 3 ) than RF and PFM. 38. Examining the Role of Gender and Ethnic Concordance in Medical Student Specialty Selection.

Abstract: Introduction: Representation of female and minority physicians varies across specialties and may influence career selection by medical students. To investigate the effect of demographic concordance between medical students and clinical role models on specialty selection, we conducted a survey of graduating medical students to assess the perceived importance and influence of third-year clerkship experiences with demographically concordant preceptors on their choice of specialty for post-graduate training., Methods: An 11-question survey was shared nationally through AAMC Organizational Student Representatives to medical students in the Class of 2023. Information gathered included demographics; specialty of choice; extent of exposure to preceptors of the same gender, race, or ethnicity during clinical clerkships; and perceived importance and influence of those interactions (Likert 1-5, Low-High) on specialty selection., Results: A total of 84 students responded. Female students ascribed more importance to gender concordance with preceptors on the third-year clerkship most associated with their specialty of choice than males [3.4 (SD 1.2) vs. 1.3 (SD 0.8) respectively, p < 0.0001] and greater influence to gender concordance on final specialty selection [2.37 (SD 1.1) vs. 1.31 (SD 0.8) respectively, p < 0.0001]. Non-Caucasians ascribed more importance to race/ethnicity concordance than Caucasians [2.8 (SD 1.4) vs. 1.2 (SD 0.5) respectively, p < 0.0001] and greater influence to race/ethnicity concordance on final specialty selection [2.0 (SD 1.3) vs. 1.1 (SD 0.4) respectively, p < 0.0001]. Caucasian females ascribed the greatest importance to gender concordance (p < 0.001), non-Caucasian females ascribed the greatest influence of gender concordance (p < 0.001), and non-Caucasian females ascribed both the greatest importance (p < 0.001) and influence (p < 0.001) to race/ethnicity concordance., Conclusions: We found that gender and race/ethnicity concordance between students and clinical preceptors during third year clerkships is perceived as especially important and influential in specialty selection by minority and female medical students. Abstract: Streptomyces is a Gram-positive bacterium, belonging to the family Streptomycetaceae and order Streptomycetales. Several strains from different species of Streptomyces can be used to promote the health and growth of artificially cultured fish and shellfish by producing secondary metabolites including antibiotics, anticancer agents, antiparasitic agents, antifungal agents, and enzymes (protease and amylase). Some Streptomyces strains also exhibit antagonistic and antimicrobial activity against aquaculture-based pathogens by producing inhibitory compounds such as bacteriocins, siderophores, hydrogen peroxide, and organic acids to compete for nutrients and attachment sites in the host. The administration of Streptomyces in aquaculture could also induce an immune response, disease resistance, quorum sensing/antibiofilm activity, antiviral activity, competitive exclusion, modification in gastrointestinal microflora, growth enhancement, and water quality amelioration via nitrogen fixation and degradation of organic residues from the culture system. This review provides the current status and prospects of Streptomyces as potential probiotics in aquaculture, their selection criteria, administrative methods, and mechanisms of action. Hence, this study calculates a composite carbon index in the context of 39 developing nations from this region and uses it as a proxy for the carbon emission-related environmental problems they have faced during the 2000-2020 period. This index is estimated by utilizing data regarding annual carbon dioxide discharges, output-based carbon productivity rates, and energy consumption-based carbon intensity levels in the concerned countries. Hence, policy takeaways from this study have critical relevance for the selected sub-Saharan African nations to help them achieve the objectives related to the Sustainable Development Goals agenda and the Paris Accord. Overall, the findings from the econometric analyses verify that more receipt of foreign direct investment initially raises but later on reduces environmental problems. Thus, the nexus concerning these variables depicts an inverse U-shape. Besides, the results endorse that greening the energy consumption structures of the sampled sub-Saharan African countries helps to abate their environmental problems in the long run while financial development aggravates the extent of environmental adversities that take place. Lastly, improving the quality of regulatory agencies enables the Sub-Saharan African nations to further mitigate their environmental problems. Moreover, these aforementioned findings are observed to be heterogeneous across low- and middle-income categories of the selected Sub-Saharan African countries. The multivariate analysis suggests the soils are moderately contaminated with As, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Hg (possibly from anthropogenic sources) and heavily contaminated with Th and U, likely ascended from geogenic sources. The GIS-based geostatistical plots coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) apportion the sources of these toxic elements, which vary greatly and are closely correlated to the geogenic processes and local anthropogenic sources like pesticides and agrochemicals. The health risk assessment revealed that the cumulative hazard index (HI) values of PTEs are lower than the safe level, suggesting no significant noncarcinogenic effect for adults and children. However, excess cancer risk (ECR) values exceed the permissible limit (1 × 10 -6 ), signifying that exposure to the toxic element concentration may cause cancer in the exposed population, most probably in the children subpopulation. Thus, this study highlights the importance of local compliance, ensuring the quality checks and management policies in using pesticides and other agrochemicals containing PTEs to control the imposed cancer risks., (© 2023. Abstract: Rapid urban population growth, the urbanization of poverty, and the proliferation of slums are being driven to a great extent by this dynamic form of globalization. Consequently, the multifaceted effects of globalization on the poor and low-income populations in the cities need to be better understood in this context, both at the individual level and within the community. Therefore, the present study was conducted to highlight the various determinants affecting the lives and enhancing the vulnerability of the dwellers of four slum settlements present in various areas of Jammu City, India. Emphasis was made to integrate biological, physical, social, and spatial facets of vulnerability to understand the complex dynamics of urban areas in developing countries. A descriptive survey design was used for questions concerning the social and environmental aspects. Social aspects including age, sex, education, religion, caste, profession, and family income that correspond to social stratification acted as baseline information, while both indoor and outdoor environments such as housing conditions, sanitation, personal habits, solid waste disposal, disaster proneness, and air and water pollution problems were taken into consideration to assess the environmental aspect. Results indicated that the slum settlement has a migratory population with permanent or temporary settlements. The status of education and skill level is poor which results in poor economic development and social well-being of the dwellers in slums. The study also identified vulnerability of the population on social and environmental front which could result into severe health issues. Abstract: Until recently, scientific consensus held firm that genetically manipulated embryos created through methods including Mitochondrial Replacement Therapy or human germline genome editing should not be used to initiate a pregnancy. In countries that have relevant laws pertaining to heritable human germline modifications, the vast majority prohibit or restrict this practice. In the last several years, scholars have observed a transformation of scientific and policy restrictions with insistent calls for creating a regulatory pathway. Multiple stakeholders highlight the role of social consensus and public engagement for governance of heritable human germline modifications. However, in the drive to gain public acceptance and lift restrictions, some proponents provide distorted or misleading narratives designed to influence public perception and incrementally shift the consensus. 45. Ethnobotanical, ecological and health risk assessment of some selected wild medicinal plants collected along mafic and Ultra Mafic rocks of Northwest Pakistan.

Abstract: The current study investigated wild plant resources and health risk assessment along with northern Pakistan's mafic and ultramafic regions. Ethnobotanical data was collected through field visits and semi-structured questionnaire surveys conducted from local inhabitants and healers. Six potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) were extracted with acids and analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS, Perkin Elmer-7000) in nine selected wild medicinal plants. Contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) were used to determine the health risk assessment of the studied medicinal plants. The results showed that the selected medicinal plants were used for the treatments of cough, joint swelling, cardiovascular disorders, toothaches, diabetes, and skin pimples by the local inhabitants due to their low-cost and easy accessibility. The concentrations of Pb (3.4-53 mg kg -1 ), Cd (0.03-0.39 mg kg -1 ), Ni (17.5-82 mg kg -1 ), Cr (29-315 mg kg -1 ), Mn (20-142 mg kg -1 ), and Zn (7.4-64 mg kg -1 ) in the studied medicinal plants were found above the safe limits (except Zn) set by WHO/FAO/USEPA (1984/2010). The Pb contamination factor was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in A. modesta (7.84) and D. viscosa (6.81), and Cd contamination factor was significantly higher in C. officinalis (26.67), followed by A. modesta (8.0) mg kg -1 . Based on PTE concentrations, the studied plants are considered not suitable for human consumption purposes. Pollution load index values for A. modesta, A. barbadensis, A. caudatus, A. indica, C. procera (2.93), D. viscosa (2.79), and C. officinalis (2.83), R. hastatus (3.12), and Z. armatum were observed as 1.00, 2.80, 2.29, 2.29, 2.93, 2.79, 2.83, 3.12 and 2.19, respectively. Hazard index values were in order of R. hastatus (1.32 × 10 -1 ) ˃ C. procera (1.21 × 10 -1 ) ˃ D. viscosa (1.10 × 10 -1 ) ˃ A. caudatus (9.11 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. barbadensis (8.66 × 10 -2 ) ˃ Z. armatum (7.99 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. indica (6.87 × 10 -2 ) ˃ A. modesta (5.6 × 10 -2 ) ˃ C. officinalis (5.42 × 10 -2 ). The health risk index values suggested that consumption of these plants individually or in combination would cause severe health problems in the consumers. Pearson's correlation results showed a significant correlation (p ≤ 0.001) between Zn and Mn in the studied medicinal plants. The current study suggests that wild medicinal plants should be adequately addressed for PTEs and other carcinogenic pollutants before their uses in the study area. Open dumping of mining waste should be banned and eco-friendly technology like organic amendments application should be used to mitigate PTEs in the study area., (© 2024. Abstract: Climate change repercussions such as temperature shifts and more severe weather occurrences are felt globally. It contributes to larger-scale challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss in food production. As a result, the purpose of this research is to develop strategies to grow the economy without harming the environment. Therefore, we revisit the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis, considering the impact of climate policy uncertainty along with other control variables. We investigated yearly panel data from 47 Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) nations from 1998 to 2021. Pooled regression, fixed effect, and the generalized method of moment (GMM) findings all confirmed the presence of inverted U-shaped EKC in BRI counties. Findings from this paper provide policymakers with actionable ideas, outlining a framework for bringing trade and climate agendas into harmony in BRI countries. The best way to promote economic growth and reduce carbon dioxide emissions is to push for trade and climate policies to be coordinated. Moreover, improving institutional quality is essential for strong environmental governance, as it facilitates the adoption of environmentally friendly industrialization techniques and the efficient administration of climate policy uncertainties., (© 2024. 47. Physiological and biochemical effects of biochar nanoparticles on spinach exposed to salinity and drought stresses.

Abstract: The utilization of nanobiochar in agricultural practices has garnered substantial interest owing to its promising potential. Its nano-size particles possess an enhanced ability to infiltrate plant cells, potentially instigating biochemical and physiological responses that augment stress tolerance. In our study, we aimed to assess the impact and extent of exogenously applied nanobiochar on the growth dynamics and antioxidative responses in Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach) plants subjected to salt stress (50 mM NaCl) and drought stress (maintained at 60% field capacity) compared with respective controls (0 mM NaCl and 100% field capacity). Following a 15-day exposure to stress conditions, nanobiochar solution (at concentrations of 0, 1, 3, and 5% w/v) was sprayed on spinach plants at weekly intervals (at 14, 21, and 28 days after sowing). The foliar application of nanobiochar markedly improved biomass, net assimilation rate, leaf area, and various other growth parameters under drought and salinity stress conditions. Notably, the application of 3% nanobiochar caused the most significant enhancement in growth traits, photosynthetic pigments, and nutrient content, indicating its efficiency in directly supplying nutrients to the foliage. Furthermore, under drought stress conditions, the application of 3% nanobiochar elicited a notable 62% increase in catalase activity, a two-fold rise in peroxidase activity, and a 128% increase in superoxide dismutase activity compared to the control (without nanobiochar). Additionally, nanobiochar application enhanced membrane stability, evidenced by reduced lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage. The foliar application of 3% nanobiochar was found as a promising strategy to significantly enhance spinach growth parameters, nutrient assimilation, and antioxidative defense mechanisms, particularly under conditions of drought and salinity stress., (© 2024. Abstract: AbstractPharmaceutical compounds are a significant source of environmental pollution, particularly in hospital wastewater, which contains high concentrations of such compounds. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a promising approach to removing pharmaceutical compounds from wastewater. This paper aims to review the current state of knowledge on the removal of pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater using constructed wetlands, including the mechanism of removal, removal efficiency, and future prospects. Pharmaceutical contaminants have been considered to be one of the most emerging pollutants in recent years. In this review article, various studies on constructed wetlands are incorporated in order to remove the pharmaceutical contaminants. The nature of constructed wetland can be explained by understanding the types of constructed wetland, characteristics of hospital wastewater, removal mechanism, and removal efficiency. The results of the review indicate that constructed wetlands are effective in removing pharmaceutical compounds from hospital wastewater. The removal mechanism of these compounds involves a combination of physical, chemical, and biological processes, including adsorption, degradation, and uptake by wetland plants. The removal efficiency of constructed wetlands varies depending on several factors, including the type and concentration of pharmaceutical compounds, the design of the wetland system, and the environmental conditions. Further research is necessary to optimize the performance of these systems, particularly in the removal of emerging contaminants, to ensure their effectiveness and long-term sustainability., (© 2024. 49. Assessment of online information on robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery.

Abstract: Online health resources are important for patients seeking perioperative information on robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery. The value of the resources depends on their readability, accuracy, content, quality, and suitability for patient use. We systematically assess current online health information on robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery. Systematic online searches were performed to identify websites discussing robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery. For each website, readability was measured by nine standardized tests, and accuracy and content were assessed by an independent panel of two robotic cardiothoracic surgeons. Quality and suitability of websites were evaluated using the DISCERN and Suitability Assessment of Materials tools, respectively. A total of 220 websites (120 cardiac, and 100 thoracic) were evaluated. Both robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery websites were very difficult to read with mean readability scores of 13.8 and 14.0 (p = 0.97), respectively, requiring at least 13 years of education to be comprehended. Both robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery websites had similar accuracy, amount of content, quality, and suitability (p > 0.05). On multivariable regression, academic websites [Exp (B)], 2.25; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.60-3.16; P < 0.001), and websites with higher amount of content [Exp (B)],1.73; 95% CI, 1.24-2.41; P < 0.001) were associated with higher accuracy. There was no association between readability of websites and accuracy [Exp (B)], 1.04; 95% CI, 0.90-1.21; P = 0.57). Online information on robotic cardiac and thoracic surgery websites overestimate patients' understanding and require at least 13 years of education to be comprehended. As website accuracy is not associated with ease of reading, the readability of online resources can be improved without compromising accuracy., (© 2024. 50. Green innovation and environmental quality in OECD countries: the mediating role of renewable energy and carbon taxes.

Abstract: The exceptional rise in overall economic activities has deteriorated environmental sustainability around the world. However, countries around the globe are implementing strategies for reaching the global climate objective. For this purpose, OECD countries committed many efforts, although their pledges and results are not parallel to the level of the Paris Agreement's ambition. This study examines the impact of eco-innovation, environmental taxes, and renewable energy consumption on the environmental performance of selected OECD countries over the period of 2006 to 2020. This study uses the generalized method of moments (GMM) and instrumental variables 2 stage least square (2SLS) methods. For robustness checks, this study uses a quantile regression approach. We conclude that an increase in the adoption of renewable energy and green innovation has a statistically significant impact on controlling CO2 emissions. Moreover, the empirical model is expanded by incorporating environmental taxes as an explanatory variable. The expanded model showed that the imposition of environmental taxes has a detrimental impact on the reduction of CO2 emissions. Moreover, on the contrary, an increase in economic activities, measured by GDP, is responsible for rising CO2 emissions in OECD countries.
