Abstract

With the popularity of online education, understanding and improving the beginning online instructors’ teaching competencies is crucial to improve online education. The structure of beginning online instructors’ perceived competencies was widely discussed, and it was also confirmed that the structure and level of online teaching competencies would be varied across countries and different cultural backgrounds. Followed U.S. theoretical framework, some studies discussed the differences between Chinese and U.S. online teaching and instructors. But how Chinese online instructors, especially beginning online instructors, perceiving the online teaching competencies, and how this framework would differ from the U.S. framework, was less discussed. To fill in this gap, this study explored the structure of Chinese beginning online instructors’ competencies using the Bayesian factor analysis method. With a limited sample size, the traditional factor analysis trail reported undetermined results with three options. The results of Bayesian factor analysis indicated the three-factor solution is the most appropriate solution with the collected data. The three factors are named “preparing and supporting online teaching,” “creating an appropriate environment for students’ learning,” and “conducting appraisals of student learning.” The contributions of this study are as follows: (1) discussing the structure of Chinese beginning online instructors’ perceived competencies, (2) discussing why and how the structure of online teaching competencies varied across countries, (3) providing practical suggestions for online instructors’ training programs, and (4) providing methodological guidelines in factor analysis with small sample sizes for applied researchers.

Abstract

Hypnosis and hypnotic suggestions are gradually gaining popularity within the consciousness community as established tools for the experimental manipulation of illusions of involuntariness, hallucinations and delusions. However, hypnosis is still far from being a widespread instrument; a crucial hindrance to taking it up is the amount of time needed to invest in identifying people high and low in responsiveness to suggestion. In this study, we introduced an online assessment of hypnotic response and estimated the extent to which the scores and psychometric properties of an online screening differ from an offline one. We propose that the online screening of hypnotic response is viable as it reduces the level of responsiveness only by a slight extent. The application of online screening may prompt researchers to run large-scale studies with more heterogeneous samples, which would help researchers to overcome some of the issues underlying the current replication crisis in psychology.

Abstract

In recent years, Ethereum gained tremendously in popularity, growing from a daily transaction average of 10K in January 2016 to an average of 500K in January 2020. Similarly, smart contracts began to carry more value, making them appealing targets for attackers. As a result, they started to become victims of attacks, costing millions of dollars. In response to these attacks, both academia and industry proposed a plethora of tools to scan smart contracts for vulnerabilities before deploying them on the blockchain. However, most of these tools solely focus on detecting vulnerabilities and not attacks, let alone quantifying or tracing the number of stolen assets. In this paper, we present Horus, a framework that empowers the automated detection and investigation of smart contract attacks based on logic-driven and graph-driven analysis of transactions. Horus provides quick means to quantify and trace the flow of stolen assets across the Ethereum blockchain. We perform a large-scale analysis of all the smart contracts deployed on Ethereum until May 2020. We identified 1,888 attacked smart contracts and 8,095 adversarial transactions in the wild. Our investigation shows that the number of attacks did not necessarily decrease over the past few years, but for some vulnerabilities remained constant. Finally, we also demonstrate the practicality of our framework via an in-depth analysis on the recent Uniswap and Lendf.me attacks.

Abstract

The article seeks to examine how literary festivals present Nature Writing and to what effect this happens within a wider publishing system. In 2018, several festivals in the German-speaking world featured events on Nature Writing. This seems to be symptomatic of a new visibility of Nature Writing on the book market. Nature Writing’s genre-bending blend of art and science has been sitting uneasily with the established categories of Sachbuch and Belletristik in the Germanic publishing world. The article presents literary festivals as agents of the book market that can help make a new genre accessible to wider audiences. It concludes with the transcript of a panel discussion on the new popularity of Nature Writing in Germany. This event took place as part of a special on Nature Writing at the 2018 international literature festival berlin. The writers Marion Poschmann and Judith Schalansky speak about their understanding of Nature Writing and discuss influences and legacies with literary scholar Susanne Scharnowski.

‘City’ is now a terrain inviting hot debates. The popularity of the issue of ‘city’ in China today might have something to do with the popularity of it worldwide, since books written by writers like Lewis Mumford have been translated into Chinese. Yet, more importantly it is an issue of Chinese characteristics. I mean, questions about city development are real and serious for the Chinese people. These questions have stimulated experts to think hard about city design and construction, and the questions have aroused the interest of aestheticians as well. The range of the discussion about city construction is very broad, since different disciplines can scrutinize it from different perspectives and thus arrive at conclusions of different types. Diversified as the researches might be, there is a question which seems to me very fundamental, and that is: what is the beauty of a city? When this question is proposed, aesthetics makes its way into the study of city development.
