Purpose The main characteristics of mechanically ventilated ARDS patients affected with COVID-19, and the adherence to lung-protective ventilation strategies are not well known. We describe characteristics and outcomes of confirmed ARDS in COVID-19 patients managed with invasive mechanical ventilation (MV). Methods This is a multicenter, prospective, observational study in consecutive, mechanically ventilated patients with ARDS (as defined by the Berlin criteria) affected with with COVID-19 (confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in nasal or pharyngeal swab specimens), admitted to a network of 36 Spanish and Andorran intensive care units (ICUs) between March 12 and June 1, 2020. We examined the clinical features, ventilatory management, and clinical outcomes of COVID-19 ARDS patients, and compared some results with other relevant studies in non-COVID-19 ARDS patients. Results A total of 742 patients were analysed with complete 28-day outcome data: 128 (17.1%) with mild, 331 (44.6%) with moderate, and 283 (38.1%) with severe ARDS. At baseline, defined as the first day on invasive MV, median (IQR) values were: tidal volume 6.9 (6.3–7.8) ml/kg predicted body weight, positive end-expiratory pressure 12 (11–14) cmH2O. Values of respiratory system compliance 35 (27–45) ml/cmH2O, plateau pressure 25 (22–29) cmH2O, and driving pressure 12 (10–16) cmH2O were similar cto values from non-COVID-19 ARDS observed in other studies. Recruitment maneuvers, prone position and neuromuscular blocking agents were used in 79%, 76% and 72% of patients, respectively. The risk of 28-day mortality was lower in mild ARDS [hazard ratio (RR) 0.56 (95% CI 0.33–0.93), p = 0.026] and moderate ARDS [hazard ratio (RR) 0.69 (95% CI 0.47–0.97), p = 0.035] when compared to severe ARDS. The 28-day mortality was similar to other observational studies in non-COVID-19 ARDS patients. Conclusions In this large series, COVID-19 ARDS patients have features similar to other causes of ARDS, compliance with lung-protective ventilation was high, and the risk of 28-day mortality increased with the degree of ARDS severity. In this paper, a semi-supervised approach based on probabilistic relaxation theory is presented. It combines two desirable properties; firstly, a very small number of labelled samples is needed and, secondly, the assignment of labels is consistently performed according to our contextual information constraints. The proposed technique has been successfully applied to pattern recognition problems, obtaining promising preliminary results in database classification and image segmentation. Our methodology has also been evaluated against a recent state-of-the-art algorithm for semi-supervised learning, obtaining generally comparable or better results.

The main motivation of this work is to find and evaluate solutions for generating binary masks (silhouettes) of foreground targets in an automatic way. To this end, four renowned unsupervised image segmentation algorithms are applied to foreground segmentation. A comparison among these algorithms is carried out using the MuHAVi dataset of multi-camera human action video sequences. This dataset presents significant challenges in terms of harsh illumination resulting for example in high contrast and deep shadows. The segmentation results have been objectively evaluated against manually derived ground-truth silhouettes.

In this paper, a semi-supervised approach based on probabilistic relaxation theory is presented. Focused on image segmentation, the presented technique combines two desirable properties; a very small number of labelled samples is needed and the assignment of labels is consistently performed according to our contextual information constraints. Our proposal has been tested on medical images from a dermatology application with quite promising preliminary results. Not only the unsupervised accuracies have been improved as expected but similar accuracies to other semi-supervised approach have been obtained using a considerably reduced number of labelled samples. Results have been also compared with other powerful and well-known unsupervised image segmentation techniques, improving significantly their results.

Selecting the most relevant bands from a hyperspectral image would considerably reduce the amount of data without practically losing relevant information. In addition, if some physical and signal criteria of this selection are taken into account, the obtained results grouping consecutive bands would be useful to design new filters for hyperspectral cameras in order to improve the efficiency of these devices. Starting from certain number of pre-selected bands, intervals of spectrally adjacent instances to these initial bands are considered for calculating new broader bands. Results will show how a weighted average on these intervals can keep, or even improve, the performance respecting to a narrower selection, avoiding, at the same time, common drawbacks from the narrow-band acquisition devices.

Different methods have been proposed in order to deal with the huge amount of information that hyperspectral applications involve. This paper presents a comparison of some of the methods proposed for band selection. A relevant and recent set of methods have been selected that cover the main tendencies in this field. Moreover, a variant of an existing method is also introduced in this work. The comparison criterion used is based on pixel classification tasks.

In this paper we present an unsupervised algorithm to select the most adequate grouping of regions in an image using a hierarchical clustering scheme. Then, we introduce an optimisation approach for the whole process. The grouping method presented is based on the maximisation of a measure that represents the perceptual decision. The whole strategy takes profit from a hierarchical clustering to find a maximum of the proposed criterion. The algorithm has been used to segment real images as well as multispectral images achieving very accurate results on this task.

Feature selection and dimensionality reduction are crucial research fields in pattern recognition. This work presents the application of a novel technique on dimensionality reduction to deal with multispectral images. A distance based on mutual information is used to construct a hierarchical clustering structure with the multispectral bands. Moreover, a criterion function is used to choose automatically the number of final clusters. Experimental results show that the method provides a very suitable subset of multispectral bands for pixel classification purposes.

Many segmentation techniques are available in the literature and some of them have been widely used in different application problems. Most of these segmentation techniques were motivated by specific application purposes. In this article we present the preliminary results of an unsupervised segmentation algorithm through a multiresolution method using color information for fruit inspection tasks. The use of a Quadtree structure simplifies the combination of a multiresolution approach with the chosen strategy for the segmentation process and speeds up the whole procedure. The algorithm has been tested in fruit images in order to segment the different zones of the fruit surface. Due to the unsupervised nature of the procedure, it can adapt to the huge variability of color and shape of regions in fruit inspection applications.

The protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica is the etiological agent of invasive amebiasis, a common human disease in certain developing countries. The requirement of close contact between the parasite and target cells for cytolysis to occur (Ravdin & Guerrant 1981; Martinez-Palomo, 1982) and the isolation of amebic proteins capable of forming aqueous pores upon their insertion into the plasma membrane of target eukaryotic cells (Lynch et al. 1982; Young et al. 1982) suggest that membrane interactions have an important role in the powerful cytolytic activity of pathogenic amebas. Tissue invasion may be facilitated by the collagenolytic and proteolytic activities described in this protozoan (Munoz et al. 1982; Gadasi & Kessler 1983; Keene et al. 1986).
