Abstract

The neutral K meson system is analyzed in the framework of the Rigged Hilbert Space quantum mechanics. The K mesons that are unstable are described as the Gamow states which are the generalized eigenstates of the hamiltonian with complex energy. It is shown that the generalized eigenfunction expansion of a coherent superposition of K 0 and \(\overline {K^0 }\) contains the usual K 1 and K 2 states and the background term which has non vanishing coupling to the 2π meson state. This can produce effect similar to the CP violating hamiltonian.

Abstract

The description of dynamical processes in atomic and molecular systems often leads to a set of coupled differential equations. Resonances within such species can be studied from a step by step propagation of solutions of these equations satisfying appropriate boundary conditions at both ends of the integration range. This is combined with a matching relation which plays the role of a quantization condition yielding a complex energy. Many variants are possible: the integration path can be real or complex; the addition of an optical potential is analyzed in some detail. This perturbation may, under some conditions, be completely equivalent to the use of a complex integration path. When these conditions are not fulfilled, the energy suffers a complex shift which may be eliminated through analytic continuation.

Abstract

The semiclassical quantization of complex energy resonance poles of the S-matrix is reviewed. The method leads to closed form results, which are valid also for broad shape resonances in the vicinity or above potential barriers. The theory is extended to various Feshbach-type resonances in curve crossing systems. The results are in very good agreement wiht exact quantum computations when available.
