Abstract

Cloud computing is becoming an interesting alternative as a flexible and affordable on-demand environment for deploying custom applications in the form of services. This work proposes a bio-inspired, self-organizing solution to support the allocation and deallocation of virtual machines and the deployment of services on virtual machines in a cloud infrastructure. The goal is twofold: to meet the service level agreements and to minimize the number of required virtual machines.

Abstract

We describe how the generic Lifecycle Model developed in the S-Cube project for the design and management of service-based applications (SBA) can be utilized in the context of Cloud Computing. In particular, we focus on the fact that the Infrastructure-as-a-Service approach enables the development of Real-Time Online Interactive Applications (ROIA), which include multi-player online computer games, interactive e-learning and training applications and high-performance simulations in virtual environments. We illustrate how the Lifecycle Model expresses the major design and execution aspects of ROIA on Clouds by addressing the specific characteristics of ROIA: a large number of concurrent users connected to a single application instance, enforcement of Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, adaptivity to changing loads, and frequent real-time interactions between users and services. We describe how our novel resource management system RTF-RMS implements concrete mechanisms that support the developer in designing adaptable ROIA on Clouds according to the different phases of the Lifecycle Model. Our experimental results demonstrate the influence of the proposed adaptation mechanisms on the application performance.

Abstract

The goals of flexibility and globalisation force enterprises to both decentralise their activities and continuously (re)structure their network of relationships, to support their business processes: “supply chain” manufacturing, design and innovation. Highly dynamic business processes must be supported by new technological infrastructures that can easily evolve to face continuous changes in the requirements and in the environment in which the application is contextualised. Increasingly, such changes would occur in a self-managed autonomic manner, as applications are running. This chapter focuses on achieving autonomic behaviours in the informative systems for supporting networked enterprises. The chapter starts with motivations; it provides an introduction to the autonomic systems literature and then focuses on the SelfLets framework developed as part of the ArtDeco project to support the autonomicity of the applications.

Abstract

The dimension of modern distributed systems is growing everyday. This phenomenon has generated several management problems due to the increase in complexity and in the needs of energy. Self-organizing architectures showed to be able to deal with this complexity by making global system features emerge without central control or the need of excessive computational power. Up to now research has been mainly focusing on identifying self-* techniques that operate during the achievement of the regular functional goals of software. Little effort, however, has been put on finding effective methods for energy usage optimization. Our work focuses specifically on this aspect and proposes a bio-inspired self-organization algorithm to redistribute load among servers in data centers. We show, first, how the algorithm redistributes the load, thus allowing a better energy management by turning off servers, and, second, how it may be integrated in a self-organizing architecture. The approach naturally complements existing self-management capabilities of a distributed self-organizing architecture, and provides a solution that is able to work even for very large systems.

In Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) services invoked in a composition can be replaced by other services, which are possibly discovered and bound at runtime. Most of the research efforts supporting this replacement assume that the interface of the interchangeable services are the same and known at design time. Such assumption is not realistic since it implies that providers of the same kinds of services agree on the interfaces the services offer. By interface mapping we mean the class of approaches aiming at relaxing this assumption. Most of those approaches available in the literature focus on stateless services and simply address mapping operation names and data structures. Instead, this paper focuses on conversational services for which the sequence of required operation calls, i.e., the interaction protocol , matters. We use model checking to automatically identify the interaction protocols mapping. We validate our technique both by applying it to the invocation of two real services (Flickr and Picasa), and by quantitatively comparing it to a related approach.

Our experience with a distributed software project in an educational environment suggests that Design by Contract techniques provide a promising solution.
