Abstract

Concentrating photovoltaics (CPV) often use Fresnel lenses, which are characterized by focal foreshortening and dispersion. These aberrations must be accounted for when designing Fresnel lenses for CPV applications. We discuss the dependence of the concentration limit of solar Fresnel lenses on dispersion in detail. For typical Fresnel lenses, dispersion creates a beam width in the order of the receiver size. Consequently, it is impossible to achieve a prescribed irradiance distribution on the target of refractive solar collectors with a concentration ratio above 500 suns, or for aspect ratios small or large.

Abstract

CAAT Enhancer Binding proteins (C/EBP) belong to a family of transcription factors which are implicated in a number of developmental and growth regulatory processes. One member of this family known as C/EBPβ (called NF-M in the chicken system) is particularly important in myelomonocytic cells because it is targeted by kinases and collaborates with the Myb oncoprotein to induce the expression of myeloid specific genes. Experiments dissecting the structure of NF-M suggest that it is a repressed transcription factor. Using the yeast two-hybrid system we showed that a negative regulatory domain masks the transactivation domain. Examination of NF-M mutants suggests that kinase (proto-) oncogenes uncover the concealed transcriptional activity by phosphorylation of the negative regulatory domain.

Abstract

When the design simulation of the nonimaging Fresnel lens solar concentrator was completed, we thought of the lens as being a direct competitor to the compound parabolic concentrator (CPC), which is a mirror-based solar thermal concentrator. We still think this to be true, but we are also investigating the role of the Fresnel lens in photovoltaic (pv) applications. Two questions arise: first, why does ‘refractive lens’ sound like ‘pv’, and ‘reflective mirror’ like ‘solar thermal’? And second, assuming the distinction to be merely historical, why are we considering and testing the nonimaging lens for use in the photovoltaic conversion of sunlight, and not only for solar thermal applications, as originally intended?
