Chicken coccidiosis causes retarded growth and low production performance in poultry, resulting in huge economic losses to the poultry industry. In order to prevent and control chicken coccidiosis, great efforts have been made to develop new drugs and vaccines, which require pure isolates of Eimeria spp. In this study, we obtained the Eimeira tenella Xiantao isolate by single oocyst isolation technology and compared its genome with the reference genome GCF_000499545.2_ETH001 of the Houghton strain. The results of the comparative genomic analysis indicated that the genome of this isolate contained 46,888 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). There were 15,107 small insertion and deletion variations (indels), 1693 structural variations (SV), and 3578 copy number variations (CNV). In addition, 64 broilers were used to determine the resistance profile of Xiantao strain. Drug susceptibility testing revealed that this isolate was completely resistant to monensin, diclazuril, halofuginone, sulfachlorpyrazine sodium, and toltrazuril, but sensitive to decoquinate. Ethanamizuril (EZL) is a novel triazine compound with excellent anticoccidial activity. We carried out a preliminary investigation of the effects of EZL on the different life cycle stages of Eimeria tenella. EZL mainly acted on the schizogony stage, with peak activity during the second-generation merozoite stage. We also studied the possible target of EZL by identifying the majorly differentially expressed gene affected by EZL in second-generation merozoites using real-time polymerase chain reaction, and screening for surface antigen proteins (SAGs). The relative expression levels of SAGs were compared by Western blot analysis showing that expression levels of surface antigen family member (SAGfm) and SAG19 were significantly downregulated by EZL. Immunofluorescence analysis indicated that SAGfm and SAG19 were localized on the surface of second-generation merozoites. In addition, fluorescence signals were significantly stronger in second-generation merozoites of infected non-medicated control (INC) group compared with that of the EZL group. Therefore, it was speculated that SAGs might be a potential target of EZL action. The inhibitory effects of anticoccidial drugs on SAG levels in coccidia thus warrant further research.

Chicken coccidiosis is caused by the apicomplexan parasite Eimeria spp. At present, drug resistance of Eimeria is common because of the indiscriminate use of anticoccidial drugs. The gene encoding surface antigen 10 of Eimeria tenella (EtSAG10) is differentially expressed between drug-resistant and drug-sensitive strains. RNA-seq analysis indicated that this gene was downregulated in strains resistant to maduramicin and diclazuril compared to susceptible strains. EtSAG10 DNA sequence alignment revealed that they contained one and ten mutations in MRR and DZR, compared with DS, respectively. A full-length EtSAG10 cDNA was successfully cloned and expressed, and the polyclonal antibody was prepared. The transcription and translation levels of EtSAG10 were analyzed by quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) and Western blotting. The localization of EtSAG10 in Spz, Mrz, and parasites in the first asexual stage was determined by indirect immunofluorescence. The potential association of EtSAG10 with sporozoite invasion of host cells was assessed by invasion inhibition assays. The results showed that EtSAG10 had a predicted transmembrane domain at the C-terminal end and a predicted signal peptide at the N-terminal end. EtSAG10 was downregulated in drug-resistant strains, which is consistent with the RNA-seq results. The EtSAG10 protein was localized to the parasite surface and parasitophorous vacuole membrane. This protein was shown to play a role in the infection of chicken intestine by sporozoites.

Eimeria tenella is a serious intracellular parasite that actively invades cecal epithelial cells of chickens. The widespread use of drugs causes severe resistance to Eimeria tenella. We detected that malate dehydrogenase (MDH), one of the differentially expressed genes, was upregulated in diclazuril-resistant and maduramicin-resistant strains through transcriptome sequencing. In this study, we cloned and expressed MDH of E. tenella (EtMDH). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions (qPCR) and Western blots were used to analyze the expression of EtMDH in resistant and sensitive strains, indicating EtMDH was upregulated in two resistant strains at the messenger RNA and protein levels. Enzyme activity was tested through absorbance measurement and the EtMDH activity increased in two resistant strains. Expression levels of EtMDH in four developmental stages of E. tenella were tested through qPCR and Western blot. Invasion inhibition assays explored if EtMDH was involved in invasion of DF-1 cells by E. tenella sporozoites. Indirect immunofluorescence assays investigated EtMDH distribution during parasite development in DF-1 cells invaded by E. tenella sporozoites. Experimental results showed that EtMDH may be related to drug resistance of E. tenella during its development and invasion. EtMDH may be an effective molecular marker for detection of E. tenella drug resistance.

The effect of Artemisia annua ethanolic extract (AE) as a potential source of herbal anticoccidial activity was investigated on experimental coccidiosis in chicken. One hundred ninety-two one-day-old chicks were divided in to 8 groups (n = 24) including AE prevention group, AE-treated group, simultaneously challenged AE-medicated group, challenged-untreated group (positive control), unchallenged-untreated group (negative control), salinomycine prevention group, salinomycine-treated group, and simultaneously challenged salinomycine-medicated group, in a completely randomized design. Oral challenge carried out by a suspension containing a mixture of 200,000 oocysts Eimeria acervulina, 30,000 oocysts Eimeria necatrix, and 20,000 oocysts Eimeria tenella on day 21 of age. Weight gain in AE prevention group significantly increased compared to positive control group (p < 0.05). Unlike salinomycine prevention group, the food conversion ratio (FCR) of AE prevention group was not significantly higher than negative control. Oocyst per gram (OPG) in simultaneously challenged AE-medicated group had no significant difference, while for 38% of the days, in simultaneously challenged salinomycine-medicated group significantly decreased (p < 0.05). The food intake of AE-treated group had no significant difference with salinomycine-treated group (p > 0.05). In half of the days of OPGs sampling, AE-treated group was reduced significantly compared to positive control group (p < 0.05). Collectively, the in vivo study of anticoccidial effects of AE in the prevention section was more effective than the treatment section, while the treatment section was more effective than the simultaneous section. We concluded that AE has a potential value to use as an herbal medicine for preventive measure in chicken coccidiosis.

Nitromezuril is a novel triazine compound for preventing coccidiosis in broiler chickens. A single treatment of chickens inoculated with Eimeria tenella during the endogenous phase were used to evaluate the developmental stages of action of nitromezuril by clinically anticoccidial indices and histopathology. Results showed that a single dose of nitromezuril at 5 mg/kg b.w. during 56 to 80 h post-inoculation can most effectively prevent weight loss and reduce both oocyst shedding and caecal lesions. The anticoccidial index reached the level of middle efficacy. Histological examinations indicated that administration of nitromezuril during 44 to 104 h after infection significantly reduced the merozoite population and the pathological damage to the caecum. Nitromezuril treatment could disturb the process of schizonts division into schizoites and produce abnormal schizonts. Overall, nitromezuril may exert its effects during the entire endogenous stage of the parasites but the schizogony stages were intrinsically more vulnerable. Nitromezuril is a potential novel anticoccidial agent suitable for further development.

Polyether ionophores are widely used to treat and control coccidiosis in chickens. Widespread use of anticoccidials resulted in worldwide resistance. Mechanisms of resistance development and expansion are complex and poorly understood. Relative proteomic quantification using LC-MS/MS was used to compare sensitive reference strains (Ref-1, Ref-2) with putatively resistant and moderately sensitive field strains (FS-R, FS-mS) of Eimeria tenella after isotopic labelling with tandem mass tags (TMT). Ninety-seven proteins were identified, and 25 of them were regulated. Actin was significantly upregulated in resistant strains in comparison with their sensitive counterparts. On the other hand, microneme protein (MIC4) was downregulated in resistant strains. Optimization of labelling E. tenella sporozoites by TMT might identify further proteins that play a role in the obvious complex mechanism leading to resistance against Monensin.

To explore the primary stage or site of action of acetamizuril (AZL), a novel triazine anticoccidial compound, the ultrastructural development of Eimeria tenella at different endogenous stages was studied in experimentally infected chickens treated with a single oral dose of 15 mg/kg AZL. As a result of drug action, the differentiations of second-generation schizonts and microgamonts were largely inhibited and merozoites became irregular in shape. Meanwhile, the outer membrane blistering and perinuclear space enlargement were obvious in the second-generation schizonts and microgamonts, which were never observed in the classic triazine anticoccidiosis drug diclazuril-treated E. tenella. The chromatin aggregation, anachromasis, and marginalization were visible in merozoites and microgamonts. Furthermore, the abnormal evagination of microgametes finally resulted in the degeneration of microgamonts and the failure of subsequent fertilization. The most marked micromorphological alteration occurring in the macrogamonts was the WFB2. Even if the fertilization occurred, the formation of oocyst wall became malformed and the zygote proceeded to the obvious degeneration. In addition, mitochondria swelling and cytoplasm vacuolization were discerned in respective intracellular stages, while endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi body swelling was less seen. These alterations may be the causes leading to the final death of E. tenella and also provide some information for further exploring the mechanism of action of AZL at the molecular level.

Chicken coccidiosis is a major parasitic disease caused by Eimeria spp. It is controlled and treated using chemical anticoccidial agents. Development of partial or complete resistance toward these anticoccidials is considered a major problem in poultry industry. Allicin is an organosulfur compound produced as a result of the reaction between alliin and alliinase after hacking of garlic. In this study, tenfold dilution from 180 mg/ml to 1.8 ng/ml of allicin in distilled water was tested against E. tenella in vitro. The percent of inhibition in allicin was from 99.9 to 71.53% using 180 mg/ml and 180 ng/ml, respectively. The percent of inhibition was 56.24% using 1.8 ng/ml. We used allicin as a treatment from plants against chicken coccidiosis; however, in vivo study should be performed to confirm these results.

Three in vitro studies were designed to develop an assay for anticoccidial efficacy by use of laboratory (Houghton) and field (T-376) Eimeria tenella strains. In study (1), minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of monensin (Mon), maduramicin (Mad), salinomycin (Sal), and lasalocid (Las) were determined that are able to inhibit more than 50% of sporozoites in host cell (Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK)) penetration and more than 95% of Houghton sporozoites development to mature merozoites (treatment time 24 h) using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). MICs were 0.5, 2.5, 1, and 0.5 μg/ml for Mon, Mad, Sal, and Las, respectively. Applying the previous MIC on T-376 strain revealed a different sensitivity profile. Mad reduced T-376 gene copies by only 89.3% after 96 h of infection. In study (2), Houghton strain sporozoites were incubated with MIC of the different tested ionophores for 2 and 4 h, respectively; afterwards, their ability to invade MDBK cells was determined using phase-contrast microscopy and qPCR. Treatment of sporozoites with ionophores for 4 h resulted in significant inhibition of invasion compared with non-treated parasites as assessed both by microscopy as well as qPCR. Inhibition rates for Mon, Mad, Sal, and Las were 90.2, 75.0, 88.3, and 82.6% using phase-contrast microscopy and 83.9, 81.4, 85.8, and 75.4% using qPCR, respectively. T-376 sporozoite invasion into MDBK cells was reduced to 48.9% by Mad. Study (3) was conducted to determine inhibition exerted by toltrazuril (Tol). Tol at 5 μg/ml reduced reproduction of Houghton strain by 95%, whereas T-376 was only reduced by 86.5%. The presented experiments indicate that infectivity inhibition of sporozoites incubated for 4 h with anticoccidials and development inhibition after 96 h of infection by qPCR are suitable means to assess sensitivity of E. tenella strains to anticoccidials.

Egress from host cells is a vital step of the intracellular life cycle of apicomplexan parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii. This phenomenon has attracted attentions from many research groups. Previous studies have shown that ethanol could stimulate the release of microneme proteins by elevating intracellular Ca(2+) concentration of T. gondii, resulting in the parasite egress from host cells. However, little information about egress is known on Eimeria species, the causative agent of coccidiosis in poultry and livestock. In this report, we studied the effect of ethanol and isopropanol on the egress of eimerian parasites. Eimeria tenella sporozoites cultured in primary chicken kidney cells were treated with ethanol and isopropanol, then the egressed parasites were analyzed. Ethanol and isopropanol could induce the rapid egress of E. tenella sporozoites from host cells. No substantial damage was found in parasite-egressed host cells. Compared to the freshly isolated sporozoites, the re-invading ability and reproductivity of the egressed parasites significantly decreased by 43.4 and 44.1 % individually. We also found that fewer sporozoites egressed from host cells when the parasites developed for a longer time before the alcohol treatment. These results demonstrate an in vitro egress mode different from that of T. gondii, facilitating the deciphering of the mechanisms of egress of eimerian parasites.

Secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA), as a vital actor involving in the mucosal immunity, plays a key role in defending a variety of pathogenic infections, such as bacteria, viruses and parasites. Eimeria tenella is an obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite contacting with the digestive tract mucosa and specially parasitizes chicken caecum, causing a severe form of coccidiosis. Coccidiosis is currently mainly controlled using chemotherapeutic agents. Diclazuril, a classic coccidiostat, was used widely in the poultry industry. Because of the rising problem of drug resistance, it is therefore crucial to understand the pattern of the SIgA expression in the action of diclazuril against E. tenella. In this study, the intestinal morphology in the caecum was analyzed by haematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, and the SIgA expression was examined by immunohistochemical technique. At the same time, the duodenum, jejunum and ileum tissues have also been evaluated. HE staining results showed that E. tenella infection caused severe damage characterized by structural disorder, haemorrhage, inflammatory cell infiltration, serous and fibrinous exudation in chicken caecum and invisible damage in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. With the treatment of diclazuril, the damage in the caecum was alleviated obviously. Immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that the SIgA level in the infected group was increased in the duodenum (p < 0.05), jejunum and ileum, respectively, but decreased (p < 0.01) in the caecum, compared with the control group. Interestingly, the SIgA level was decreased in the duodenum (p < 0.05), jejunum and ileum but increased (p < 0.05) in the caecum in the infected/diclazuril group in comparison to the infected group. The results showed that diclazuril effectively alleviated the damage in the caecum induced by E. tenella and provided a cure for coccidiosis by improving the immune function in chickens.

Diclazuril has long been used as an effective benzeneacetonitrile anticoccidial for the control of Eimeria tenella that causes coccidiosis. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the anticoccidial effects of diclazuril remains elusive. In this study, a proteomic analysis of the effect of diclazuril on second-generation merozoites of E. tenella was performed. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), 13 target proteins were found to be significantly affected by diclazuril treatment, with 11 of these proteins being identified as annotated proteins from E. tenella or other Apicomplexa parasites. These proteins contribute to various functions, including metabolism, protein synthesis, and host cell invasion. Using RT-PCR, we identified the potential pattern of transcriptional regulation induced by diclazuril, and we suggest some promising targets for the intervention of E. tenella infection.

To enhance the anti-coccidial effect of dinitolmide and reduce its residual, the dinitolmide/MMT compounds were synthesized by the method of solution intercalation via dinitolmide intercalated into Na + -montmorillonite (Na + -MMT). The structure of compounds was characterized by X-ray diffraction and Fourier transformed infrared. Its anti-coccidial effect was examined by Eimeria tenella infection experiment. One hundred fifty AA broiler chickens were divided into five groups. Chickens were orally inoculated with 5 × 10(4) E. tenella oocysts after dinitolmide was given. Their curative effects were observed. The results showed that intercalated dinitolmide expanded the basal spacing (d 001) of MMT from 12.6 to 15.2 Å. The IR bands of amide group in dinitolmide/MMT were detected at 1,533 cm(-1) which showed that dinitolmide was successfully intercalated into the interlayer spaces of MMT. The dinitolmide/MMT showed higher anti-coccidian oocyst activity compared with dinitolmide (p < 0.05). The dinitolmide/MMT compound can significantly increase body weight gains and reduce bloody diarrhea, lesion score, and oocyst excretion. The anti-coccidia index of dinitolmide/MMT group (165.21) is much higher than dinitolmide group (88.84). The dinitolmide/MMT hybrid systems can be more effective in control of coccidiosis in comparison to dinitolmide.

Screening the anticoccidial drug targets is very important for developing novel drugs and revealing the molecular basis of drug resistance in coccidia. Due to high effectivity and safety, diclazuril was used widely in the poultry industry. To assess the roles of the serine/threonine protein phosphatase type 5 of second-generation merozoites in Eimeria tenella (EtPP5) in the anticoccidial activity of diclazuril against chicken coccidiosis, EtPP5 was cloned using reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and rapid amplification of cDNA ends. Ultrastructural changes in second-generation merozoites and mRNA expression level of EtPP5 were monitored by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and quantitative real-time PCR, respectively. The results showed that the full length of the cloned EtPP5 cDNA (2,495 bp) encompassed a 1,647-bp open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 548 residues with an estimated molecular mass of 60.82 kDa and a theoretical isoelectric point of 5.89. Molecular analysis of EtPP5 reveals the presence of a C-terminal phosphatase domain and an extended N-terminal tetratricopeptide repeat motif, a typical feature of protein phosphatases. The cDNA sequence has been submitted to the GenBank database with accession number JX987508. EtPP5 shared 89% homology with the published sequence of a PP5 ortholog of Toxoplasma gondii at the amino acid level (GenBank XP&#95;002364442.1). TEM observed that diclazuril induced ultrastructural changes in second-generation merozoites. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that compared with the control group, the level of EtPP5 mRNA expression was significantly downregulated by 51.4% by diclazuril treatment. The high similarity of EtPP5 to previously described PP5 of other organisms, as well as its downregulated expression and connection with apoptosis in the second-generation merozoites induced by diclazuril, suggests that it could act an important role in understanding the signaling mechanism underlining the diclazuril-induced merozoites apoptosis.

The study was conducted on broiler birds to evaluate the anticoccidial efficacy of an extract of Chinese traditional herb Dichroa febrifuga Lour. One hundred broiler birds were assigned to five equal groups. All birds in groups 1-4 were orally infected with 1.5 × 10(4) Eimeira tenella sporulated oocysts and birds in groups 1, 2 and 3 were medicated with 20, 40 mg extract/kg feed and 2 mg diclazuril/kg feed, respectively. The bloody diarrhea, oocyst counts, intestinal lesion scores, and the body weight were recorded to evaluate the anticoccidial efficacy. The results showed that D. febrifuga extract was effective against Eimeria infection; especially 20 mg D. febrifuga extract/kg feed can significantly increase body weight gains and reduce bloody diarrhea, lesion score, and oocyst excretion in comparison to infected-unmedicated control group.

Halofuginone (stenorol) has been used as an effective anticoccidial reagent for decades but very little is known about its mode of action. In this study, chickens were inoculated with Eimeria tenella oocysts on 14-day-old and medicated with halofuginone at days 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 post inoculations (groups 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, respectively). Chickens in group 7 were taken as challenge-unmedicated control and in group 8 unchallenged-unmedicated control. The survival rate, body weight gains (BWG), oocysts production, cecal scores, bloody diarrhea and histological examinations were analyzed to evaluate the anticoccidial efficacy of halofuginone and to initially elucidate its mechanisms. Results showed that halofuginone which acted as a coccidiostatic can significantly enhance the BWG, and decrease both the oocyst shedding and cecal destruction caused by E. tenella infection. The histological slide examination noted that halofuginone was effective when provided 0-2 days post inoculation but only partially effective when applied 3-7 days post infection. The second-generation schizonts treated with halofuginone appeared vacuolated and degenerated. It is concluded that halofuginone can inhibit the parasite's invasion of host cecal hypothetical cell at the early stages of life cycle and later disturb the parasite's development by vacuolation of the schizonts. The resulting abnormal schizonts could not divide into schizoites and were eventually eliminated by the host's immune response.

The negative effects of coccidiosis on poultry health and productivity and increasing problems related to drug resistance have stimulated the search for novel and alternative methods of control. The present study evaluates the anticoccidial activity of curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a natural polyphenolic compound abundant in the rhizome of the perennial herb turmeric (Curcuma longa) which is a spice and food colorant commonly used in curries and also used as medicinal herb. Its effects were evaluated on Eimeria tenella sporozoites, including morphological alterations, sporozoite viability and infectivity to Madin-Darby bovine kidney (MDBK) cells. Morphological alterations of the sporozoites were recorded as deformation due to swelling and cell membrane corrugations. Curcumin at concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 μM showed considerable effects on sporozoite morphology and viability in a dose-dependent manner after incubation over 3, 6, 18 and 24 h while lower curcumin concentrations (6.25 and 12.5 μM) were not effective. In comparison to the untreated control, sporozoite infectivity was reduced at curcumin concentrations of 100 and 200 μM by 41.6% and 72.8%, respectively. Negative effects of curcumin on MDBK cells were not seen at these concentrations; however, curcumin at concentrations of 1,800, 600 and 400 μM was toxic to MDBK cells and affected cell proliferation. In conclusion, curcumin exhibited a marked inhibitory effect in vitro on E. tenella sporozoites inducing morphological changes and reducing sporozoite viability and infectivity.

We propose maslinic acid (2-alpha, 3-beta-dihydroxiolean-12-en-28-oic acid), found in the leaves and fruit of the olive tree (Olea europaea L.), as a new natural coccidiostatic product against Eimeria tenella. Its action in infected animals has been compared with animals treated with sodium salinomycin. The lesion index (LS), the oocyst index (OI) and the anticoccidial index (ACI) were studied with regard to the weight of the chicks. The ACI for maslinic acid was 210.27 and for sodium salinomycin 173.09. Similarly, both LS and OI decreased in the groups treated with maslinic acid. A considerable increase in weight was found in the chicks treated with maslinic acid compared with those in the control group. Histopathological studies of the caecum at 120 h post-infection showed that the infection rate decreased significantly in chicks treated with maslinic acid.

An in vitro assay system with Eimeria tenella sporozoites was used to study the effects of extracellular calcium and active agents affecting the invasion of parasites into host cells. At concentrations of 900 microM Ca(2+) and less the invasion rates were distinctly decreased. Ryanodine, a herbal alkaloid known for binding to internal Ca(2+) channels (ryanodine receptors), showed an inhibitory effect on E. tenella sporozoite invasion. Preincubation tests and staining with a fluorescent derivative of ryanodine assured that the compound bound specifically to the sporozoites and affected them rather than the host cells.

A study of development of Eimeria tenella in chickens fed high n-3 fatty acids (n-3FA) diets showed ultrastructural degeneration of both asexual and sexual parasite stages. Abnormal shedding of asexual and sexual parasite developmental stages into the cecal lumen was also observed. Ultrastructural degeneration was characterized by cytoplasmic vacuolization, chromatin condensation within the nucleus, a lack of parasitophorous vacuole delineation, and, in some cases, a complete loss of parasite ultrastructural organization. The results of this study indicate that diets high in n-3FA may be useful in the control of avian coccidia.

Protein samples prepared from sporozoites of two ionophore-sensitive strains (WIS and Penn St) and three resistant strains (FS139, FS459, and FS462) of Eimeria tenella were subjected to sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (native PAGE), or two-dimensional electrophoresis with native PAGE and SDS-PAGE. Variant proteins that might be associated with ionophore resistance were observed in resistant field strains on native PAGE. When two-dimensional electrophoresis was conducted, four over-expressed peptides with approximate molecular weights of 97, 71, 70, and 50 kDa were observed in the FS139 field strain in comparison with the WIS laboratory strain.

Infections of Eimeria tenella in chicken embryos were used to compare the anticoccidial activity of ten drugs. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal toxic concentration (MTC) were affected by the time of inoculation into the embryos and by the chemical nature of the compounds. Some compounds (nicarbazin, amprolium) had no effect on the development of coccidia when they were injected into embryos after the day of infection. Drugs that act early in the life cycle of coccidia (robenidine, clopidol, decoquinate, diclazuril, halofuginone, monensin, salinomycin, and lasalocid) were active at 5-125 micrograms/embryo when they were injected on the day of infection. The ionophores and halofuginone were highly toxic to embryos; most synthetic compounds were nontoxic. The incubation of merozoites in drug suspensions prior to the infection of embryos did not result in embryo toxicity, but the resultant MICs were much higher than those obtained when drugs were injected directly into the embryos. Several products were essentially inactive. Neither nicarbazin nor amprolium prevented oocyst formation. The widely divergent endpoints for the MIC and MTC of anticoccidials in embryos seriously limits the application of this technique as a screen for anticoccidial drugs.
