Abstract

This paper shares our experience in developing information literacy skills through a framework based on writing papers in the IEEE format conference. The framework gave students, in an active learning style, a set of activities to identify the need for information, procure the information, evaluate the information and subsequently revise the strategy for obtaining the information, and to use it in an ethical manner to produce a technical paper. We followed the ACRL’s Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education in the development of an assessment tool, course content, and exercises. Initial results show that the proposed framework developed information literacy skills in a maturing stage. We believe that this experience and the design of the framework could be replicated or adapted to different Engineering Careers.

Abstract

Teaching research-paper writing in a step-wise and interactive fashion exposes students to methodology and empowers them. Contemporary undergraduates have generally not learned how to write research papers, and teaching methodology has long been a challenge. Seeking to accomplish both simultaneously gives students an applied way to better understand their political science courses and, more importantly, provides them with experiences that transform them as learners. The process includes high-impact educational practices which compel students to (a) integrate across the curriculum; (b) engage in “real” research; (c) experience learning as a social process; and (d) make revising and rethinking habitual. Undergraduates thus become more capable and confident learners with a greater ability to succeed in future endeavors.

Abstract

In this chapter, we show the evolution of resources devoted to the professional development of mathematics teachers in Italy, who have migrated from paper to the online environment, up to MOOCs. Based on the theoretical framework of meta-didactical transposition, we begin by reviewing the main changes in the official and implemented Italian curriculum of mathematics. Two of the authors (F. Arzarello and O. Robutti) took a relevant part in these events. On the basis of these experiences, together with the third author (E. Taranto), they contributed to the realization of the Math MOOC UniTo project for online professional development for mathematics teachers, aimed at increasing their professional competencies and improving their classroom practices. We will base the discussion on showing examples of teachers’ online interactions and sharing the guidelines we have followed to set the module design of the MOOCs. We share with the research community the design and monitoring practices that our experience has and is continuing to work on.

The sample in this study will include the management of pondok institution registered with Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia (JAKIM). It is hope that finding from this study will help the pondok management to consider the proposed innovative teaching model in improving and reforming their learning system in order to remain pondok sustainability in facing with challenges related to Industrial Revolution 4.0 and globalisation. It is hope that the results of this study could help the Malaysian government develop a model for strengthening the pondok institution curriculum in line with mainstream education.

22. Teaching Critical Writing in the World Theatre Course: WAC Pedagogy and the Scaffolded Research Paper

Abstract

A common issue that theatre professors may struggle with is balancing course content with significant writing requirements. How do we make our students better writers and critical thinkers while maintaining time for course content? Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) pedagogy and practices, such as scaffolded writing, teaching collaboration, and peer review, offer a student-centered model for addressing this issue and facilitate student academic success. In this paper, we offer an example of a scaffolded approach to the research paper assignment designed for our World Theatre courses at City University of New York–Hunter College. We first discuss WAC pedagogy and practices as implemented in other fields and their research findings. We then lay out the scaffolding design of our research paper assignment and explain the various exercises and activities we implemented throughout the semester. Next, we discuss three different case studies to exhibit the usefulness of scaffolded design for three unique student types, before turning our attention to the benefits of the scaffolded process. We conclude by describing our assessment tools and the rationale behind these grading methods, along with reflections on the process as well as recommendations for its implementation in other courses.

Abstract

This case study investigates professor and student perceptions surrounding an existing writing assignment—a research paper—in an introductory chemical engineering course at an American liberal arts university in the United Arab Emirates. Drawing on observation, survey, and interview data, this naturalistic study provides insight into the sociocultural and pedagogical variables that affect professor and student construal of this research paper and offers insight into adapting American university curriculum to local needs in a context where many students and faculty negotiate disparate cultural assumptions, are used to different pedagogical modes, and lack confidence in their English writing skills. While limited to one course, and indeed, only one assignment, this study highlights how the stakeholders of this assignment—the professor, the students, and the writing fellow—respond to this research paper to mediate the tensions between social–cultural and institutional context, meet the challenges of American-style university writing, and develop student agency and instill an engineering identity. Specific implications for optimizing the assignment to support student investment, foster learner independence, cultivate an engineering identity, and align expectations with first year composition (FYC) are highlighted.

Abstract

In the European Higher Education Area, future foreign language teachers should receive training under a global perspective that integrates a global education and citizenship within a specific framework, to internationalize teacher education programs. In this sense, the development of academic coursework regulated by a policy of good practices is important for supporting global curriculum content and the inclusion of co-curricular and cross-cultural experiences. In-depth analysis at a national level demonstrates the lack of global design for the implementation of global and cross-cultural competences. Thus, the European project VIR_TEACH suggests the design of a White Paper for a comprehensive Language Teachers Training at a European scale where coordinated policy actions and a strategy for engaging policymakers and public administrators are encouraged.

The AGE Presents Introduction to Geroscience video lecture series is a collection of high-quality didactic video lectures and associated teaching materials focused on foundational topics in aging biology. The videos are made freely available on YouTube and are targeted toward an audience familiar with concepts learned in the first year of a college undergraduate biology/biomedical major. Members of the American Aging Association also receive the original lecture slides and lecture notes, with additional course materials to be developed in the future. We expect that these lectures will enhance understanding of geroscience among the general public while also providing tools that educators can use in the classroom for high school, undergraduate, and graduate level curricula.
