Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we show how to estimate the normals of a 3D surface from a minimum of two views, assuming that the poses of a calibrated camera are perfectly known. For each pair of image points, the normal at the corresponding 3D point is expressed in function of the local gradients of the grey level, whatever the type of image formation (orthogonal or perspective projection). As an application, this allows us to fully estimate the inter-image homography, which not only depends on the relative pose between views, but also on the local orientation of the surface. Hence, the photo-consistency between patches from two images, which is the basis of the so-called "plane-sweeping" method, is improved. Experiments on synthetic and real data validate our approach.

Abstract

International audience; In higher education, many academic support programs intend to enhance the student success. Some of them particularly focus on first generation students. This is the case of an innovative serious game entitled "Success" which aims at fostering awareness about contributing factors of success. The game proposes to embody a coach and guide a virtual student during his/her first semester. In this fictional universe, the virtual students are subject to daily events, invitations, professional/associative/cultural activities and school responsibilities. The coach's mission consists in helping them to self-organize and achieve what is expected to succeed including a healthy way of life. To that end, the coach must give them some advice and suggest to balance academic work and privacy. Our contribution focuses on the design process to create interactive and educational scenarios embedded in this serious game. It presents a model to describe different profiles of virtual students and indicators related to what can be considered as a healthy way of life. The model we propose allows to create a library of virtual students that the players can guide on the way of success.

Abstract

International audience; Today, access to daily news is easier than ever. Online misinformation is increasing and is making our societies face great challenges. Our goal aims at providing a support for media education programs, which can help raise young adults’ conscientiousness of the dangers related to fake news. Following on from this idea, we designed a board game, called UNISON in partnership with an academic library. The board game has been tested in real conditions. First results show that the majority of participants learnt new knowledge about fake news and media.

Abstract

International audience; Serious games have been developed in recent years as an essential tool for the improvement of students’ decision-making skills and performance. They evolved in various domains, especially in the healthcare field. Healthcare professional experts and trainers indicate the importance of designing educational environments and educational programs in order to reproduce with high fidelity the professional context. Therefore, data gained through gaming is explored and exploited to extract information about the learning strategies. In this work, we explore data that was collected during courses in which students used a simulation game called CLONE (Clinical Organizer Nurse Education). This serious game has been designed to train nursing students in work organizations. With the implementation of statistical approaches, we intended to study factors that impact on the success of the game. Considering game sessions from 3 different angles, we try to answer the following questions: 1) Does the duration of the game session has an impact on gaming outcomes? 2) Which errors do students commit during the game? 3) Do students achieve learning progress by repeating the game? Eventually, we discussed obtained results and future work.

Abstract

International audience; A developmental model of an artificial neuron is presented. In this model, a pair of neural developmental programs develop an entire artificial neural network of arbitrary size. The pair of neural chromosomes are evolved using Cartesian Genetic Programming. During development, neurons and their connections can move, change, die or be created. We show that this two-chromosome genotype can be evolved to develop into a single neural network from which multiple conventional artificial neural networks can be extracted. The extracted conventional ANNs share some neurons across tasks. We have evaluated the performance of this method on three standard classification problems: cancer, diabetes and the glass datasets. The evolved pair of neuron programs can generate artificial neural networks that perform reasonably well on all three benchmark problems simultaneously. It appears to be the first attempt to solve multiple standard classification problems using a developmental approach.

Abstract

International audience; Professionals working with visually impaired children (i.e. specialist teachers and educators, Orientation and Mobility trainers, psychologists, etc.) have to create their own teaching materials. Indeed, only few adapted materials exist, and do not fully meet their needs. Thus, rapid prototyping tools and methods could help them to design and make materials adapted to teaching to visually impaired students. In this study, we first designed a blog enabling professionals to create their own teaching materials. Then, we set up a challenge with five teams including one professional of visual impairment and students in computer science. The aim of each team was to design and make a teaching material, based on handcrafting, 3D printing tools and cheap micro-controllers, fitting the needs of the professional. After they have used their material with visually impaired students, we interviewed the professionals in order to evaluate usage and satisfaction. The professionals reported that the materials were easy to make, and valuable for teaching to visually impaired students. They also reported that DIY prototyping, based on 3D printing and cheap microcontrollers, enables them to create their own teaching materials, and hence accurately meet unanswered needs. Importantly, they would advise their colleagues to use this method and new tools. However, they consider that they would need assistance to create new materials on their own.

Abstract

International audience; With proliferation of mobile devices equipped with cameras and video recording applications, it is now common to observe multiple mobile cameras filming the same scene at an event from a diverse set of view angles. These recorded videos provide a rich set of data for someone to re-experience the event at a later time. Not all the videos recorded, however, show a desirable view. Navigating through a large collection of videos to find a video with a better viewing angle can be time consuming. We propose a query-response interface in which users can intuitively switch to another video with an alternate, better, view, by selecting a 2D region within a video as a query. The system would then response with another video that has a better view of the selected region, maximizing the viewpoint entropy. The key to our system is a lightweight 3D scene structure, also termed 3D interest map. A 3D interest map is naturally an extension of saliency maps in the 3D space since most users film what they find interesting from their respective viewpoints. A user study with more than 35 users shows that our video query system achieves a suitable compromise between accuracy and run-time.

Abstract

International audience; In this chapter, we describe the methodology we have engineered during the design process of the collaborative and immersive learning game 3D Virtual Operating Room. The game targets an audience of practitioners involved in the operating room and the training consists in virtually re-enacting typical perioperative activities so as to learn or improve skills related to patient safety. The challenges faced in this project include multiplayer collaboration in a shared, interactive and dynamically evolving virtual environment, and modelling educational scenarios on the basis of actual observations inside the operating room. The model we detail is grounded on a semantic definition of the environment which allowed for three innovative features. A game-mediated communication system where information pertaining to the game is exchanged in real time by the players. AI-controlled characters replacing missing players as fully equal partners. And, the ability for the game to provide feedback in real time or during a debriefing on the team’s performance against predefined pedagogical objectives.
