Abstract

Performance evaluation is a key aspect for every manager of an enterprise. An analysis of the production system is necessary to guarantee a solid and robust growth, to cope with periods of crisis that may arise and to support decisions taken on future strategies. Not always the manager, who often coincides with the owner, of a micro or small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) has the knowledge and the appropriate tools to analyze, autonomously, the production system. Small enterprises are not always able to assign this assessment to qualified personnel or to an external company. Hence the need for an easy-to-use tool that can be understood and easily used by the manager. The proposed tool originates from a model of enterprise, which was developed in collaboration with business economists. Its interaction with the economic environment is simplified by focusing the analysis to those performance indicators that can be easily measured in a small production system and whose values can be easily read by the manager or owner.

Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the most common disabling diseases of the elderly. Critical limb ischemia (CLI) represents the most severe progression of PAD, threatening leg amputation. Revascularization is critical for limb salvage, prolonging survival, and improving the quality of life of patients with PAD. The ‘best vessel’ approach has been the traditional strategy used by surgeons when deciding the target vessel for intervention. Recently, angiosome-targeted revascularization to maximize healing of ischemic tissue lesions of the foot has gained popularity. However, this “idealized” anatomic concept has many theoretical and practical flaws, which make it difficult to generalize in patients with CLI. Many factors, such as quality of target vessel, role of pedal arch, extensive tissue loss and angiosome variability, need to be taken into consideration and this necessitates a more individualized approach for each patient.

Abstract

Part 3: Open Innovation; International audience; The increasing complexity of designing and manufacturing products as well as the growing speed required for their innovation is pushing large and medium-small companies to an ever-broader search for new ideas and for a wide availability of experts, able to provide timely contributions. Existing approaches mainly address the early phases of the product lifecycle in the frame of “open innovation”. The crowd engineering approach is to organize an efficient and effective utilization of the “crowd”, i.e. a wide set of persons, from students to private experts, and to start-ups and smart SMEs, which could be involved in the creation of innovative products. The first purpose of the paper is to give a presentation of Crowd Engineering in terms of a logical frame where crowd-workers will contribute into an informal collaborative network to fulfill technical and social needs. Then a schematic model based on an analogy between Crowd Engineering and Supply Relationship Management, will be outlined thus offering, on one hand, suggestions for a real implementation, on the other, some hints for a research agenda.

Abstract

Aluminum nitride (AlN) thin films were deposited by sputtering on Ti bottom electrodes and integrated on a kapton substrate for flexible and stretchable electronics. The aim of this work was to find the best combination of Ti underlayer sputtering conditions and AlN over-growth to obtain the (002) nitride orientation, fundamental requirement for the piezoelectric response of the material in piezoelectric devices. Flexible electronics represent today’s cutting-edge electronic technologies thanks to their low cost and easy fabrication scalability.

Abstract

Gas sensors based on mixtures of iron oxides nanoparticles (NPs) modified with Pd NPs at the different NPs Pd: Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 proportions were prepared and characterized. Nanoparticles diameter was 6–7 nm. NPs films were deposited from the mixtures of Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 and Pd NPs colloidal solutions by modified Langmuir-Schaeffer technique onto alumina substrates. Samples were composed from 4 Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 NP monolayers (MLs). Sensors were tested toward acetone vapors and NO2 at concentration range of 5–200 and 0.5–12 ppm respectively in dry air, and at different working temperatures. Pd-doped Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 sensors showed p-type gas response, higher conductance and higher conduction activation energies compared to pure Fe3O4/γ-Fe2O3 sensor that gives n-type gas response. Results were tentatively explained in terms of surface interactions with oxidizing and reducing species, and Nearest Neighbor Hopping conduction model (NNH).
