This study applied various scientific analyses to one fragment of paper and three pigments excavated from earthenware found in the Hoeamsa Temple site at Yangju, Korea, which is believed to have been built in the early twelfth century. Radiocarbon dating of the paper fragment suggests a manufacture date between 1460 and 1646 (at a 95% confidence interval). It was estimated to have been used during the early and middle period of the Joseon dynasty (1391–1776), when the Hoeamsa Temple site was rebuilt. In addition, by staining the fiber of the paper fragment with Graff "C" stain, the paper's raw material was identified as paper mulberry through dislocation, cross-marking, and transparent membrane, which are characteristics of the bast fiber. Efforts were made to identify their material properties and manufacturing techniques of the three types of pigments. Color difference analysis was performed by distributing the pigments in large areas to reveal characteristic differences according to the color difference of the pigment. We found that green-type pigments are malachite and atacamite, red-type pigments are hematite based on the element Fe, and white-type pigments are quartz and muscovite based on the elements Si and Al. In addition, as the size distribution of the three types of pigments is wide and has a multi-peak distribution curve, it was concluded that the pigments were used without purification. In this study, four novel bacterial strains, USB13T, AW1T, GTP1T, and HM2T, were isolated from various environments in Busan and Jeju Island, Republic of Korea. The 16S rRNA sequencing results indicated that the four novel strains belong to the genus Ramlibacter. All four strains were tested for their potential cellulolytic properties, where strain USB13T was identified as the only novel bacterium and the first within its genus to show cellulolytic activity. When tested, the highest activities of endoglucanase, exoglucanase, β-glucosidase, and filter paper cellulase (FPCase) were 1.91 IU/mL, 1.77 IU/mL, 0.76 IU/mL, and 1.12 IU/mL, respectively at pH 6.0. Comparisons of draft whole genome sequences (WGS) were also made using average nucleotide identity, digital DNA-DNA hybridization values, and average amino acid identity values, while whole genome comparison was visualized using the BLAST Ring Image Generator. The G + C contents of the strains ranged from 67.9 to 69.9%, while genome sizes ranged from 4.31 to 6.15 Mbp. Based on polyphasic evidence, the novel strains represent four new species within the genus Ramlibacter, for which the names Ramlibacter cellulosilyticus sp. nov. (type strain, USB13T = KACC 21656T = NBRC 114839T) Ramlibacter aurantiacus sp. nov. (type strain, AW1T = KACC 21544T = NBRC 114862T), Ramlibacter albus sp. nov. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting compound and a mutagenic agent that poses health hazards to living organisms, making it a global contaminant. Several remediation techniques have been reported in the literature, however, a mixed-method science mapping analysis of research trends on BPA is still lacking. The present study aimed to investigate global research trends in BPA remediation. Published research papers on BPA remediation indexed in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus between 1992 and 2021 were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively using science mapping algorithms including Rstudio, bibliometrix package and R Version 4.2.1. The thematic areas were determined using k-means clustering of the author-keywords while Porter's stemming algorithm was used to stemmed inflectional terms to their roots. Overall, 640 documents were published by 1903 authors with 2.07 authors/article and 0.336 article/author, 4.31 co-authors/article, an annual growth rate of 17.35% and a collaboration index of 2.99. Research productivity increased from 1 article in 1992 to 93 articles in 2021. The citations of the topmost 23 articles ranged from 365 to 109 and the total citation per year ranged from 45.6 to 27.3. China (n = 267, 41.7%), Japan (n = 53, 8.3%), USA (n = 33, 5.2%) and Korea (n = 28, 4.4%) were respectively the top four countries based on the total of published articles and overall citation. There were 48 relevant keywords dominated by Bisphenol A, adsorption, biodegradation, and peroximonosulphate. The present analysis identifies research accomplishment, focus and gaps on Bisphenol A remediation and offer the researchers the information needed to forecast future research priorities that can help policymakers and governments to internationalize collaborations and create research curricula that can remediate BPA on a global scale. Recently, the concept of a circular economy for carbon neutrality is emerging. In particular, waste plastics are one of the key wastes, and efforts are being made to recycle them as energy rather than dispose of them. Accordingly, the technology of producing and utilizing pyrolysis oil from waste plastics attracts attention. As it is an early stage of technology development, however, there are not many demonstrations and papers that analyze the technology broadly. The goal of this study is to propose building a circular economy on a university campus through waste plastic pyrolysis oil technology. To show its feasibility, waste plastic pyrolysis oil technology is analyzed comprehensively from economic, environmental, and policy perspectives using the scenario analysis technique on the university campus level. A methodology of the scenario analysis technique enables predicting the uncertainties. Since plastic pyrolysis oil technologies and carbon neutrality are accompanied by many uncertainties, this technique is expected to be an appropriate methodology for this study. First, the amount of pyrolysis oil production from waste plastics from the campus is estimated. Then, the cost and carbon emissions from waste plastics are estimated if the pyrolysis oil technology is used instead of the traditional waste disposal process. As a result, the total economic profits of up to 425,484,022 won/year (354,570.01 $/year) are expected when a circular economy is built using waste plastic pyrolysis oil. In addition, it is also confirmed that greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be reduced by up to 840,891 kgCO2eq/year. The waste plastic pyrolysis oil satisfies Korea's gas pollutant standards and is consistent with the GHG reduction policy. It can be concluded that building a circular economy at the university campus level using waste plastic pyrolysis oil technology is suitable from economic, environmental, and policy perspectives. Patients with weak or no symptoms accelerate the spread of COVID-19 through various mutations and require more aggressive and active means of validating the COVID-19 infection. More than 30% of patients are reported as asymptomatic infection after the delta mutation spread in Korea. It means that there is a need for a means to more actively and accurately validate the infection of the epidemic via pre-symptomatic detection, besides confirming the infection via the symptoms. Mishara et al. (Nat Biomed Eng 4, 1208–1220, 2020) reported that physiological data collected from smartwatches could be an indicator to suspect COVID-19 infection. It shows that it is possible to identify an abnormal state suspected of COVID-19 by applying an anomaly detection method for the smartwatch's physiological data and identifying the subject's abnormal state to be observed. This paper proposes to apply the One Class-Support Vector Machine (OC-SVM) for pre-symptomatic COVID-19 detection. We show that OC-SVM can provide better performance than the Mahalanobis distance-based method used by Mishara et al. (Nat Biomed Eng 4, 1208–1220, 2020) in three aspects: earlier (23.5–40% earlier) and more detection (13.2–19.1% relative better) and fewer false positives. As a result, we could conclude that OC-SVM using Resting Heart Rate (RHR) with 350 and 300 moving average size is the most recommended technique for COVID-19 pre-symptomatic detection based on physiological data from the smartwatch. Is collective agency important for information security management? Drawing on social cognitive theory, this paper proposes four efficacy-shaping factors as antecedents of workgroup collective efficacy and examines its influence on workgroup information security effectiveness. For empirical analysis, a structural model is proposed with theoretical support. 306 individual responses were collected from 33 branch offices of a law enforcement organization in South Korea. Our results support the focal hypotheses that workgroup collective efficacy has significant positive relationships with its antecedents as well as workgroup information security effectiveness. This indicates that the exercise of collective agency is important in enhancing information security effectiveness in organizations. Further theoretical and practical implications will be discussed. Transparent and FAIR disclosure of meta-information about healthcare data and infrastructure is essential but has not been well publicized. In this paper, we provide a transparent disclosure of the process of standardizing a common data model and developing a national data infrastructure using national claims data. We established an Observational Medical Outcome Partnership (OMOP) common data model database for national claims data of the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service of South Korea. To introduce a data openness policy, we built a distributed data analysis environment and released metadata based on the FAIR principle. A total of 10,098,730,241 claims and 56,579,726 patients' data were converted as OMOP common data model. We also built an analytics environment for distributed research and made the metadata publicly available. Because port operations have rapidly been extending, air pollution resulted from ports has been increased and become a persistent concern for environmentalist and policy makers. The objective of this paper is to measure the environmental efficiency of ports in Korea. The main characteristic of the environmental efficiency assessment problem is that undesirable output of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and exogenous fixed input of the terminal area of ports should concurrently be considered. By analysing the impacts of the exogenous fixed input and undesirable outputs on decision making units (DMUs) performance, a super efficiency slacks-based measure in data envelopment analysis (SE-SBM-DEA) approach is proposed. The proposed approach consists of two models: slacks-based measure (SBM) model and super efficiency SBM (SE-SBM) model. The models effectively discriminate between efficient and inefficient ports, and rank their efficiencies. To restrict any decreases or increases in the fixed input levels, the slacks of fixed inputs are removed from the target functions and their relevant constraints of the proposed approach. In addition, the undesirable outputs are formulated according to the weak disposability assumption, so that they can only be reduced with the reduction of certain desirable outputs. Hence, its slack should also be removed from the SBM and SE-SBM models. As a result, the scalar measures of the models only deal with the discretionary inputs and desirable outputs of a DMU being evaluated. To model the COVID-19 infection and develop effective control measures, this paper proposes an SEIR-type epidemic model considering the impact of face-mask wearing and vaccination. Firstly, the effective reproduction number and the threshold conditions are obtained. Secondly, based on the data of South Korea from January 20, 2022 to March 21, 2022, the model parameters are estimated. Finally, a sensitivity analysis and the numerical study are conducted. The results show that the face-mask wearing is associated with 83 % and 90 % reductions in the numbers of cumulative cases and newly confirmed cases, respectively, after a period of 60 days, when the face mask wearing rate increases by 15 % . Furthermore, the vaccination rate is associated with 75 % and 80 % reductions in the numbers of cumulative cases and the newly confirmed cases, respectively, after the same period of 60 days when the vaccination rate is increased by 15 % . A combined measure involving face-mask wearing and vaccination may be more effective and reasonable in preventing and controlling this infection. It is also suggested that disease control departments should strongly recommended the wearing of face masks s as well as vaccination to prevent the unvaccinated people from becoming infected. Using the entire population of USPTO patent applications published between 2002 and 2019, and leveraging on both patent classification and semantic analysis, this paper aims to map the current knowledge base centred on robotics and AI technologies. These technologies are investigated both as a whole and distinguishing core and related innovations, along a 4-level core-periphery architecture. Merging patent applications with the Orbis IP firm-level database allows us to put forward a twofold analysis based on industry of activity and geographic location. In a nutshell, results show that: (i) rather than representing a technological revolution, the new knowledge base is strictly linked to the previous technological paradigm; (ii) the new knowledge base is characterised by a considerable—but not impressively widespread—degree of pervasiveness; (iii) robotics and AI are strictly related, converging (particularly among the related technologies and in more recent times) and jointly shaping a new knowledge base that should be considered as a whole, rather than consisting of two separate GPTs; (iv) the US technological leadership turns out to be confirmed (although declining in relative terms in favour of Asian countries such as South Korea, China and, more recently, India). Background: Despite increasing awareness of the importance of promoting the social responsibility of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals, few intervention programs have been developed to enhance the social responsibility of college students or adults in the STEM fields. In this paper, we introduced a new instructional program, called ENACT (engage, navigate, anticipate, conduct, and take action) and examined whether the program increased the social responsibility among safety engineering students (N = 46) recruited from a university located in a southern metropolitan area of South Korea. Results: In the ENACT program, the college students selected and explored socioscientific issues (SSIs) of their own interest then autonomously engaged in scientific and engineering group projects spanning a semester where they developed solutions to the SSIs and shared them with their communities. At the conclusion of the intervention in this study, they displayed an increased social responsibility regarding the consideration of societal needs and demands, civic engagement and services, and participation in policy decision-making. Social responsibility scores measured after the intervention (post-test) correlated with students' willingness to voluntarily participate in projects involving SSIs. In addition, the intervention effects were more pronounced for the students who initially had medium and low social responsibility scores. Conclusions: We have shown that social responsibility can be nurtured by systemic instructional approaches, and increased social responsibility can lead to greater commitment to resolving SSIs. Mastering engineering content knowledge and skills is the key element of engineering curricula. However, we are compelled to incorporate social responsibility into the STEM curriculum. This paper aims to probe the influence of innovation spillovers in the artificial intelligence (AI) and financial technology (Fin-tech) industries on the value of the internet of things (IoT) companies. Python was utilized to download public information from Yahoo Finance, and then the GARCH model was used to extract the fluctuations of cross-industry innovation spillovers. Next, the Fama–French three-factor model was used to explore the interactive changes between variables. The panel data regression analysis indicates that the more firms accept innovation spillovers from other industries, the better the excess return; however, this effect differs because of industrial attributes and the environmental changes induced by COVID-19. Additionally, this study finds that investing in large-cap growth stocks of IoT firms is more likely to yield excess returns. Finally, the study yields lessons for policy leverage to accelerate the upgrading and transformation of innovation-interactive industries by referring to the practices of Singapore and South Korea. In order to more accurately predict the global solar energy consumption, a new grey prediction model FDGM(1,1, t α ) is proposed in this paper. The grey wolf optimizer (GWO) is used to optimize the fractional-order r and the time power α in the model. The proposed FDGM(1,1, t α ) model, two statistical models and other five existing grey models are used to simulate and predict the solar energy consumption in the four economies (France, South Korea, OECD and Asia Pacific region) from 2010 to 2029. The simulation results show that our proposed FDGM(1,1, t α ) has higher accuracy than the other seven models. The prediction results based on FDGM(1,1, t α ) show that in 2029, the solar energy consumption in South Korea, the OECD and the Asia Pacific region will reach 33,935.32 Ten-trillion J, 1,222,123.45 Ten-trillion J and 2,297,274.45 Ten-trillion J, respectively, but that in France will slowly increase in the next few years and will gradually decrease after reaching a peak of 14,727.34 Ten-trillion J in 2026. The better forecasting solar energy consumption by using the proposed model can provide useful information for the policy-makers to formulate and improve energy policies and measures. In general, the created era of a literary work is significant information for understanding the background and the literary interpretation of the work. However, in the case of literary works of old Korea, especially works created in Hangul, there are few works of which the era of creation are known. In this paper, the created era of old Korean documents was estimated based on artificial intelligence. Hangul, a Korean letter system where one syllable is one character, has more than 10,000 combinations of characters, so it is available to predict changes in the structure or grammar of Hangul by analyzing the frequency of characters. Accordingly, a deep neural network model was constructed based on the term frequency of each character in Hangul. Model training was performed based on 496 documents with known publication years, and the mean-absolute-error of the test set for the entire prediction range from 1447 to 1934 was 13.77 years for test sets and 15.8 years for validation sets, which is less than an error ratio of 3.25% compared to the total year range. In addition, the predicted results of works from which only the approximate creation time was inferred were also within the range, and the predicted creation years for other divisions of the identical novel were similar. These results show that the deep neural network model based on character term frequency predicted the creation era of old Korean documents properly. This study is expected to support the literary history of Korea within the period from 15C to 19C by predicting the period of creation or enjoyment of the work. Can capital flow management measures (CFMs) reduce external vulnerability of the economy? This paper studies the effectiveness of a macroprudential stability levy introduced in Korea, which was intended to curb foreign currency (FX) debt as well as to lengthen its maturity structure in the banking sector. Using the detailed bank-level balance sheet data, this study finds that the levy had limited effects on curbing non-core FX debt, while it substantially lengthened its maturity structure driven mainly by foreign bank branches' interoffice account. The subsequent analysis employing the transaction-level loan rate data further suggests that it likely had unintended consequences favoring foreign bank branches that took advantage of regulatory arbitrage and therefore were able to take FX loan market share from domestic banks that could not avoid passing the levy onto their borrowers. In this study, we use an empirical example to demonstrate how a multi-stage pattern matching process can inform and substantiate the construction of partial least squares (PLS) models and the subsequent interpretation of and theorizing from the findings. We document the research process underlying our empirical investigations of business – civil society collaborations in South Korea. The four-step process we outline in this paper can be used to ensure the meaningfulness of the structural model as well as to maximize the use of PLS for theorizing. This methodological advancement is particularly helpful in situations when literature reference points exist, but further contextual information may add nuances to prevalent knowledge. The findings from the qualitative flexible pattern matching part of the study prompted us to conduct a multi-group analysis. The resulting path changes in the base model led to the identification of four partnering strategies for business-CSO collaborations: (1) partnering for visibility; (2) partnering for compliance; (3) partnering for responsibility outsourcing; and (4) partnering for value co-creation. We open an avenue for discussing how we can pave the way for compliance with existing regulations is a far-reaching factor for settling nuclear fusion technology. Based on a model of the Korean Fusion Demonstration Reactor (K-DEMO) with a target fusion power of 2.2 GW, we assess the intrinsic safety determinants of internal energy sources, the expected radioactive waste, and the tritium management. Regarding these safety factors, we scrutinize the compatibility of the current legislative environment in Korea with K-DEMO and envisage foreseeable obstacles, such as licensing of the nuclear facilities and acceptability of the radioactive waste. Based on precedent licenses for the Korean Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) and lessons learned from the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), we examine hazardous factors that would threaten regulatory compliance of K-DEMO. This approach can help shape a fusion-compatible framework for consolidating the necessary technical provisions and regulatory baselines reflecting social acceptance with a sense of safety. Fusion-compatible aspects in the regulatory environment are discussed, from fusion philosophy to subordinate administrative and technical guidelines, facility classification, and detailed methods guaranteeing integrity and safety. In traditional network environment, the attack topology of the network is usually obtained based on a graph traversal algorithm. It uses connection relationships to describe the process of the attack, thus completing the description of network security event. However, in the edge-cloud environment, the control logic and data forwarding of network devices are separated from each other. The control layer is responsible for the centralized management of network edge nodes. After acquiring the entire network topology, it can automatically generate a visualized network structure. This architecture extends traditional cloud computing architecture to the edge of the network, helping to handle some latency-sensitive service requirements, especially for most IoT applications. Therefore, security analysts can grasp the connection status of the devices on the entire network in the control domain. This network topology generation method based on the control layer information is directly and efficiently, which can greatly simplify the description of security events in the edge-cloud environment. At the same time, the separate structure also hides specific details of the underlying network device. Petri-net, as a formal description tool, can be used to describe such structure. Among existing security event description methods, the CORAS modeling tool has the advantages of graphical description, reusability and refinement description. And it also provides analysis guides to guide the operation steps. Based on the edge-cloud environment, this paper combines the advantages of CORAS modeling and analysis with Object-oriented Petri-net theory, and proposes a COP (CORAS-based Object-oriented Petri-net)-based Intelligent Applications security event description method. E-learning has the potential to transform public education. Based on a theoretical framework that integrates effectiveness and social legitimacy perspectives, this paper examines e-learning implementation in South Korea, and attributes its success to policies and efforts that address and manage both e-learning technology's effectiveness and its social legitimacy. The effectiveness of e-learning is enhanced by building efficient e-learning infrastructure, and making continuous standardization efforts, while social legitimacy is gained by establishing a sound regulatory system, applying a socially appropriate online pedagogy, raising public awareness, and building e-learning communities. Interspecific hybridization has been suggested to occur frequently in Rumex (Polygonaceae). Several hypothesized combinations of parental species of hybrids based on their intermediate morphology have been suggested in the genus, but few of them have been phylogenetically tested. We analyzed nuclear and chloroplast DNA sequence data of a putative natural hybrid between Rumex crispus and Rumex obtusifolius from Korea to confirm its hybrid status and to determine the maternal parent. Analysis of the nuclear DNA pgiC region revealed that R. crispus and R. obtusifolius have contributed to the nuclear genome of the putative hybrids. The haplotype distribution pattern inferred from the combined sequence data set of five chloroplast DNA regions (matK, rbcL-accD IGS, trnK-rps16 IGS, ycf6-psbM IGS and psbA-trnH IGS) indicated bidirectional hybridization events between R. crispus and R. obtusifolius. This paper provides the first molecular evidence for interspecific hybridization between R. crispus and R. obtusifolius. In addition, our findings strongly suggested that Korean populations of Rumex japonicus have a hybrid origin, and R. crispus may represent one of the parental taxa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes data-analytics-based factory operation strategies for the quality enhancement of die casting. We first define the four main problems of die casting that result in lower quality: [P1] gaps between the input and output casting parameter values, [P2] occurrence of preheat shots, [P3] lateness of defect distinction, and [P4] worker-experience-based casting parameter tuning. To address these four problems, we derived seven tasks that should be conducted during factory operation: [T1] implementation of exploratory data analysis (EDA) for investigating the trends and correlations between data, [T2] deduction of the optimal casting parameter output values for the production of fair-quality products, [T3] deduction of the upper and lower control limits for casting parameter input–output gap management, [T4] development of a preheat shot diagnosis algorithm, [T5] development of a defect prediction algorithm, [T6] development of a defect cause diagnosis algorithm, and [T7] development of a casting parameter tuning algorithm. The details of the proposed data-analytics-based factory operation strategies with regard to the casting parameter input and output data, data preprocessing, data analytics method used, and implementation are presented and discussed. The intersecting challenges of urbanization, growing inequality, climate and environmental risk and economic sustainability require new modes of urban governance. Although the urban poor are increasingly recognized as needing to be part of climate adaptation planning and implementation, many governance arrangements fail to explicitly include them. In order to make climate governance more inclusive, transformative capacity is needed. Drawing on two case studies from different urban contexts in South Africa, this paper explores the nature of inclusive governance between local government and the urban poor and the extent to which this has contributed to transformative development trajectories. The findings suggest that inclusive governance will be strengthened when local government (1) recognizes the everyday reality of the urban poor and works with them to identify priorities for transformative change, (2) supports sustained intermediaries who are urban poor themselves and (3) draws on diverse modes of governance to find new ways to engage diverse actors and experiment with inclusive adaptation planning and practice. These practices will help to build transformative capacity that can envisage and enable new ways of governing urban risk and implementing adaptation that puts the poor, frequently most impacted by climate and disaster risk, at the centre. This study reports how internationalization of academic knowledge is reflected in the language choice of Korean academic journals across disciplines and examines perceptions and practices of eighty two faculty from various disciplines at three Korean universities concerning publishing in English journals. The results indicate that natural science has the highest percentage of English-medium journals whereas those in humanities and social science predominantly use Korean as a medium of publication. Similar disciplinary patterns are observed in the responses to survey questions about frequency of publication as well as desire and preference for publishing papers in English. Construction and demolition waste generated in the Republic of Korea accounts for about half of the annual waste. The generation of construction waste is expected to increase gradually due to obsolete structures and reconstructions that have reached the end of their service life. Considering the geographical characteristics of Korea, where the land area is small and about 70% of which is mountainous, landfilling of waste is absolutely limited. Therefore, resource circulation such as recycling of construction waste is an urgent and important task. This paper overviews the current status of construction waste generation, treatment, and the flow of government policies in Korea. Furthermore, the current status, limitations, and stakeholder efforts regarding recycling of recycled aggregate from construction waste were reviewed. Data used in this paper were mostly collected from government reports, construction waste regulations, and research papers. The results show that construction waste management systems have been enacted and revised in line with social needs, and each stakeholder is making an effort to use the construction waste practically. The economic growth of South Korea, particularly from 1962 till now, has been at the least outstanding. There have been many explanations of the causes of this remarkable achievement of South Korea, with most of the explanations attributing the rapid industrialization and growth of South Korea to the adoption of an outward-looking strategy by the country in the early 1960s. The South Asian countries have been trying to adopt trade oriented strategies for many years now. But none of the South Asian countries has been able to reach the 'developed country' status as yet. Hence, this paper is an endeavor to find out what explains the differences in growth between South Korea and the developing countries of South Asia, and what we can learn from all this. The results suggest that the main factors that have evidently caused the differences in per capita GDP between South Korea and Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal and Sri Lanka, on average, are labor, per capita human capital and physical capital. Trade openness is also another significant determinant, but their exact effects are not overwhelmingly positive, if the marginal effects estimated in this paper are taken into account. Financial liberalization is seen to be impacting differences in per capita physical capital more than differences in per capita GDP, but it is not statistically significant in all specifications. Hence, the most important lesson to be learnt from the South Korean growth experience is that, no matter how much a country increases trade or liberalizes its economy, if the country does not manage to improve its human capital and production technology through these policies, it will not prosper in the long run. Background: The incidence of injuries associated with the use of electric scooter (e-scooter) has consistently increased since the launch of the first shared e-scooter systems in late 2017. The aim with this review was to investigate the epidemiological characteristics of fractures related to e-scooter accidents. Methods: A systematic review of the all published papers was conducted regarding epidemiologic characteristics of traumatic fractures following e-scooter-related injuries. Multiple databases of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and Cochrane library were searched and relevant clinical studies reporting incidence for traumatic fractures from e-scooter-related injuries were included. All other types of studies and those including patients with non-orthopedic injuries were excluded. The Methodological Index for Non-randomized Studies (MINORS) was used to assess the quality of the included studies. The characteristics of patients were analyzed by the mean and the standard deviation for continuous variables. Results: Eleven published studies (6579 patients) were identified which have been reported from Nov, 2019 to Sep, 2021. Periods of research in each study were different from May, 2017 to July, 2020. In the majority of cases, the mechanism of injury was a fall from the scooter (84.8%), which was followed by e-scooter motor vehicle accident (7.4%) and collision (5.5%). Regarding the fractures, upper limb injuries were the most prevalent (65%) and radial fracture was the most common fracture type of the upper limb (28.2%). Lower limb fractures were recorded in 475 (25.3%) patients, the most common being tibial fractures (8.4%). Conclusions: As e-scooter market continues to considerably rise, the incidence of major orthopedic traumas is also likely to increase. Despite potential selection and reporting biases, our systematic review suggested up-to-date guidelines for the epidemiology of fractures following e-scooter injury. According to the results found in the present study, we believe that it is reasonable to mandate helmet use and the obligation to wear other types of safety equipment such as elbow and knee pads should be discussed. The outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is regarded as a highly contagious disease that has challenged the healthcare systems worldwide with confirmed cases approaching 12 million and more than 50,000 deaths. Considering the worldwide cases of novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it remains a pandemic and the vaccines and therapeutic agents have yet to be developed to stop the spread of this outbreak. Due to the unavailability of specific treatment for the COVID-19, it can be viewed that the risk of cluster infection will continue to be present within the intermittent and small-scale outbreaks. Though the COVID-19 has been identified as a communicable disease, the preventive measures and response policies in South Korea are effectively serving the purpose and gained the confidence to overcome the COVID-19 crisis. This paper includes the exploratory data analysis of COVID-19 cases in South Korea till July 8, 2020. South Korea has reported the lowest death rate with the majority of the deaths, associated with persons with underlying health conditions or elderly infected individuals. Currently the infected patients (total 989) remaining in South Korea are mild cases owing to its robust health care system and quarantine inspection procedures followed by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of South Korea to flatten the COVID-19 curve. Although the COVID-19 countermeasures taken by the South Korean government may not be conclusive or universal for all, but its exemplary approach to tackle COVID-19 can aid countries across the globe to strengthen their response system for the future outbreak of such an infectious disease. In recent years, several studies pointed out that anthropogenic emission sources in China which significantly contribute to the PM2.5 mass burden was an important cause of particulate pollution in South Korea. However, most studies generally focused upon a single pollution event. It is rare to see comprehensive research that captures those features prone to interannual variations concerning the transboundary pollutant contribution in South Korea using a unified method. In this paper, we establish the emission inventories covering East Asia in 2010, 2015, and 2017, and then conduct the source apportionment by applying a coupled regional air quality model called the Integrated Source Apportionment Module (ISAM). Comparison of simulated and observed PM2.5 mass concentration at 165 CNEMC (China National Environmental Monitoring Center) sites suggests that the PM2.5 concentrations are well represented by the modeling system. The model is used to quantitatively investigate the contribution from emission sources in China to PM2.5 concentrations over South Korea and those features found to be prone to interannual variations are then discussed. The results show that the average annual contribution of PM2.5 has dropped significantly from 28.0% in 2010 to 15.7% in 2017, which strongly suggests that China has achieved remarkable results in the treatment of atmospheric particulates. This paper explores the nature of scientific research traffic on the Korea research environment open network. Based on these investigations, we propose a scalable design and algorithm for the science demilitarization zone (DMZ). The proposed design allows users to share a data-transfer node (DTN), which is essential but costly equipment in the Science DMZ. The proposed iterative greedy algorithm attempts to minimize the peak traffic of the shared DTNs. By considering state-of-the-art DTN and practical research traffic, the proposed design and algorithm achieve up to 79% capital expenditure (CAPEX) reduction from that of a reference design of the Science DMZ where a DTN is allocated per user. The proposed algorithm achieves a 5-order-of-magnitude reduction in computation time at the cost of acceptable CAPEX overheads compared to those of the minimum-CAPEX solutions. This study aimed to develop a new diffusion model for box-office forecasting by modifying the generalized Bass diffusion model with incorporation of search trend data and historical movie-audience data. To that end, first, movie-audience data (i.e., the number of moviegoers) and NAVER search trend data for each of the top 30 movies released in Korea in 2018 were collected by day. Then, the modified generalized Bass diffusion model, newly proposed in this paper, was applied in order to estimate the diffusion parameters. The results of our empirical case study on the Korean film market show that NAVER search trend data plays an important role in box-office forecasting after a movie is released. This study contributes to the extant literature by proposing a new diffusion model, which is a novel online big-data-driven methodology of box-office forecasting. This paper proposes and analyzes an efficient robot task sequence for a flexible assembly system that consists of multiple 3D printers, post-processing, assembly, inspection machines, and a material handling robot. The flexible assembly system, which has been built in many large cities in Korea, has been designed to fabricate customized products for start-ups or individuals. We consider cyclic scheduling of the system in which the robot repeats a certain sequence to produce identical products. We propose a robot task sequence to minimize the cycle time. The system behavior with the proposed robot task sequence is modeled with a timed event graph (TEG), and the optimality of the sequence is proved by analyzing the circuits in the TEG. Moving object detection (MOD) technology was combined to include detection, tracking and classification which provides information such as the local and global position estimation and velocity from around objects in real time at least 15 fps. To operate an autonomous driving vehicle on real roads, a multi-sensor-based object detection and classification module should carry out simultaneously processing in the autonomous system for safe driving. Additionally, the object detection results must have high-speed processing performance in a limited HW platform for autonomous vehicles. To solve this problem, we used the Redmon in DARKNET-based (https://pjreddie.com/darknet/yolo) deep learning method to modify a detector that obtains the local position estimation in real time. The aim of this study was to get the local position information of a moving object by fusing the information from multi-cameras and one RADAR. Thus, we made a fusion server to synchronize and converse the information of multi-objects from multi-sensors on our autonomous vehicle. In this paper, we introduce a method to solve the local position estimation that recognizes the around view which includes the long-, middle- and short-range view. We also describe a method to solve the problem caused by a steep slope and a curving road condition while driving. In this paper, we present a fast Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) algorithm for pricing equity-linked securities (ELS). The ELS is one of the most popular and complex financial derivatives in South Korea. We consider a step-down ELS with a knock-in barrier. This derivative has several intermediate and final automatic redemptions when the underlying asset satisfies certain conditions. If these conditions are not satisfied until the expiry date, then it will be checked whether the stock path hits the knock-in barrier. The payoff is given depending on whether the path hits the knock-in barrier. In the proposed algorithm, we first generate a stock path for redemption dates only. If the generated stock path does not satisfy the early redemption conditions and is not below the knock-in barrier at the redemption dates, then we regenerate a daily path using Brownian bridge. We present numerical algorithms for one-, two-, and three-asset step-down ELS. The computational results demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed fast MCS algorithm. This paper examines the early social consequences of the largest oil spill in Korea from December 2007 up to May 2008. The focus is on the social impact of the oil spill and its social implications in three major areas of oil spill response: (1) clean-up operations, (2) compensation, and (3) ecological impact. The paper highlights both the positive and negative consequences of the spill and the significance of the early social assessment to understand subsequent responses and adaptation in the long run. In this paper, we examine group power structure and intragroup process with a focus on demographic faultline and subgroups. Specifically, we investigate the effects of group faultline, power imbalance, and cross-dependency between subgroups on overall group performance. Drawing on mutual dependence theory, we develop a new construct of cross-dependency, which refers to dependence between subgroups across different resources. We also examine the moderating effect of LMX differentiation. Using data from 50 work teams from a manufacturing company in Korea, we found that group faultline itself did not have a significant impact on group performance. Instead, perceived power imbalance between subgroups was negatively associated with group performance. Consistent with our expectation, cross-dependency between subgroups in task-advice and friendship networks had a positive effect. Lastly, LMX differentiation exacerbated the negative effect of power imbalance and mitigated the positive effect of cross-dependency. We discuss implications of our findings for group faultline and subgroup theory to better understand the positive potential of subgroups and inter-subgroup process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the effects of academic patenting activity on academic publication and on collaboration between researchers in academia and researchers in industry or public research institutes. The study focuses on the case of South Korea, where university research rapidly evolved along with economic development, and where university–industry linkages are strongly encouraged by government policies. The study collected data on 632 full-time faculty members in the natural sciences, bio sciences, and engineering sciences at 46 Korean universities from the National Research Foundation of Korea and other statistical data sources. The results show that academic patenting complements publishing up to a certain level of patenting activity, but then replaces publishing. Academic patenting also is shown to have positive effects on research collaboration with industry and statistically non-significant effects on research collaboration with researchers at public research institutes. This paper focuses on the impact of the 1997 Asian financial market crisis upon hedging effectiveness within the KOSPI 200 stock index and index futures markets. The paper utilizes the inter-temporal relationship between the two markets to examine the characteristics of several minimum variance hedge ratios. It also examines the performances of alternative hedging strategies for dynamic portfolio management in the presence of cointegrated time-varying risks. The results show a decline in the persistence of conditional volatility within market prices after the crisis. This decline leads to the relative performance of utilizing constant hedge ratios to increase, though not significantly so to guarantee a superior performance over more sophisticated time-varying hedge ratio strategies. South Korea experienced a steep increase in wage inequality between the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and the global financial crisis in 2008. This paper investigates the causes of the sharp change during that time period by looking at the contributions of changes in the distributions of schooling and unionization. The effects are estimated applying two robust distributional function based decomposition methods on Korean Labor and Panel Survey data for the time period 1998-2007. The results suggest changes in the distribution of schooling can explain about 10 % of the changes in the 90/50 percentile wage gap. The declining unionization rate does not have much impact on the upward trend of Korean wage inequality. In addition, aggregate decomposition results suggest that changes in labor force composition can explain a significant proportion of the total wage changes in the upper-tail of the distribution. Apis mellifera filamentous virus (AmFV) is a double-stranded DNA virus that infects Apis mellifera bees. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study aiming to detect and analyse the genetic diversity and prevalence of AmFV in Korean honeybee colonies. Phylogenetic analysis based on baculovirus repeat open reading frame–N gene (Bro–N) sequences revealed that AmFV isolates from the Republic of Korea (ROK) fell into two distinct lineages, with genetic origins in Switzerland and China, with nucleotide similarities of 98.3% and 98.2%, respectively. Our prevalence analysis demonstrated a noteworthy infection rate of AmFV in 545 honeybee colonies, reaching 33.09% in 2022 and increasing to 44.90% by 2023. Intriguingly, we also detected AmFV in Varroa destructor mites, highlighting their potential role as vectors and carriers of AmFV. The presence of AmFV was correlated with an increased infection rate of sacbrood virus, deformed wing virus, Lake Sinai virus 2, black queen cell virus, and Nosema ceranae in honeybee colonies. These findings provide valuable insight into the prevalence and potential transmission mechanisms of AmFV in honeybee colonies in the ROK. Risk governance is a widely used framework in natural and societal risk management research. Risks from natural hazards in urban areas call for the establishment of rigorous and participatory urban risk governance. In this study, we examined participatory risk governance (PRG) of flood risk management (FRM) in Seoul, South Korea. We conducted key informant interviews and implemented a survey with citizens, to explore perceptions of flood risks and risk management, and to examine prospects for improving PRG in Seoul. We found a gap between the perceptions of key informants and citizens. Key informants believed that citizens' low awareness of flood risks hinders PRG. Yet our research found that citizens' risk awareness was not low, and risk awareness may not be the main barrier to participation in PRG. Instead, we found that citizens lacked knowledge of FRM actions, and they assigned government bodies a high level of responsibility for FRM, compared to the level of responsibility that citizens assigned to themselves. Moreover, the actors involved in FRM tended not to trust each other, which implies a lack of mutual understanding. To increase the effectiveness of PRG, we suggest a polycentric governance structure anchored by a leading actor group, and active promotion of the participation of actors at multiple levels of governance. Communication between government and citizen participants, designed to foster improved understanding and recognition of one another's roles and contributions to FRM, will enhance trust and improve the implementation of PRG in Seoul. The spread of American Bullfrog has a significant impact on the surrounding ecosystem. It is important to study the mechanisms of their spreading so that proper mitigation can be applied when needed. This study analyzes data from national surveys on bullfrog distribution. We divided the data into 25 regional clusters. To assess the spread within each cluster, we constructed temporal sequences of spatial distribution using the agglomerative clustering method. We employed Elementary Cellular Automata (ECA) to identify rules governing the changes in spatial patterns. Each cell in the ECA grid represents either the presence or absence of bullfrogs based on observations. For each cluster, we counted the number of presence location in the sequence to quantify spreading intensity. We used a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to learn the ECA rules and predict future spreading intensity by estimating the expected number of presence locations over 400 simulated generations. We incorporated environmental factors by obtaining habitat suitability maps using Maxent. We multiplied spreading intensity by habitat suitability to create an overall assessment of bullfrog invasion risk. The South Korean government is encouraging the active participation of power generation companies in the offshore wind power project by announcing the renewable energy certificates (REC) weighting plan. However, from a long-term perspective, the offshore wind power must be able to generate profits without government support to demonstrate its business feasibility and attract the voluntary participation of power generation companies. This is because government support may be subject to change, depending on the internal and external political circumstances of the country. This report calculates the expected costs for a 495 MW floating offshore wind farm in South Korea's market environment and examines how the feasibility of the project shifts depending on the country's current REC weights. Furthermore, this study intends to determine whether floating offshore wind power can generate profits without the Korean government's support by calculating the expected profit in combination with the green hydrogen project. The net present value, levelized cost of energy and internal rate of return (IRR) indexes are calculated according to the project's specific particularities, such as power purchase agreement, REC weighting, distance from shore and sea depth. Based on this, an index-based comparison is revealed and the margin for profitability for such an investment is discussed. The calculation results revealed that with a decrease in capital expenditures and operating expenditure or an increase in the system marginal price under specific assumptions, the value of IRR increased. This study describes the release of electricity consumption data of some manufacturing factories located in South Korea that participate in the demand response (DR) market. The data (in kilowatt) comprise individual factories' total power usage details that were acquired using advanced metering infrastructures. They further contain details on the manufacture types, DR participation dates, mandatory reduction capacities, and response capacities of the factories. For data acquisition, 10 manufacturing companies are representatively selected according to the process regularity and company size standard of this study. Entire datasets are newly collected and available at one-minute intervals for seven months from 1 March to 30 September 2019. A gauge-changeable system in railways can be a better solution for the fast and safe railway transportation between two countries with different gauges than transshipment or bogie-changing at the border of each country. Especially in South Korea, it is very essential for connecting the trans-Korean railway with the transcontinental railway effectively. So far, conventional type sensors like gap sensors or strain gauges have been used for the monitoring system during gauge change processes. Because they are also based on electric type sensors, they could not be free from electromagnetic interference (EMI) under high-voltage electric power feeding system in modern railways. In this paper, a novel and simple real-time monitoring system in the gauge change facilities is developed by using fiber optic sensors, especially FBG (Fiber Bragg Grating) sensors, and a graphic user interface (GUI) software. The system shows the whole gauge change process successfully in real-time including its malfunction to the operator. Early forecasting of COVID-19 virus spread is crucial to decision making on lockdown or closure of cities, states or countries. In this paper we design a recursive bifurcation model for analyzing COVID-19 virus spread in different countries. The bifurcation facilitates recursive processing of infected population through linear least-squares fitting. In addition, a nonlinear least-squares fitting procedure is utilized to predict the future values of infected populations. Numerical results on the data from two countries (South Korea and Germany) indicate the effectiveness of our approach, compared to a logistic growth model and a Richards model in the context of early forecast. This paper attempts to provide a new approach to social inequality, focusing on income and wealth inequality and the relationship between income inequality and wealth inequality. With an analysis of the data linking survey data with administrative data in South Korea, this paper reports that wealth, employment status, family size, and education are significant contributors to income inequality. However, income and loans are the two most significant factors contributing to wealth inequality. Income derived from economic activity and loans based on the leverage in the financial market have exacerbated wealth inequality as higher income groups tend to utilize more loans in the financialized economy, widening the gap between the rich and the poor. This paper examines whether the drivers of economic growth are the same as those for genuine progress in the case of South Korea. Using data covering the period 1970-2005, the paper first constructs a Genuine Progress Indicator (GPI). An empirical model is then specified and estimated using growth in GDP per capita and growth in the GPI per capita as dependent variables. Results indicate that while physical capital, research and development, exports, and inflation are all important in determining growth in GDP per capita, only physical capital is a driver of genuine progress. These findings highlight the need for policymakers to identify and target other determinants of genuine progress to improve the well-being of South Koreans, rather than focus attention on traditional sources of economic growth.
