Dry root rot (DRR) caused by Rhizoctonia bataticola [(Taub.) Butler] is an emerging disease of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) and a serious constraint to chickpea production in warm and arid regions. To identify the genomic regions conferring resistance to DRR, a total of 182 F9 derived Recombinant Inbred Lines (RILs) were developed from the cross between a susceptible line BG 212 and moderately resistant breeding line ICCV 08305. The parental lines and RILs were screened against Rb 6 isolate of R. bataticola using paper towel method under controlled environment at ICRISAT during 2016 and 2017. The RILs were genotyped with cost-effective SNP genotyping platform, Affymetrix® Axiom®CicerSNP array. As a result, a high-density genetic map with 13,110 SNP markers spanning 1224.11 cM with an average inter marker distance of 0.09 cM was developed. A single minor QTL ('qDRR-8') explaining 6.70% PVE with LOD scores 3.34 was identified on CaLG08 for DRR resistance which could be further explored for mining candidate genes and the linked SNP markers could be further validated for application in marker-assisted selection of DRR resistance in chickpea breeding programs. Open water transposition channels in hot and arid regions, like those in the São Francisco River Integration Project (PISF) in Brazil, suffer significant water losses through evaporation. This paper proposes covering these channels with photovoltaic (PV) panels to reduce evaporation while simultaneously generating clean energy. The research aims to quantify water savings and energy generation potential across all channel lengths and assess whether the generated solar power can substitute grid electricity for powering the transposition pumps during peak hours, thereby enhancing energy efficiency. This study analyzed the state-of-the-art of PV generation and calculated their solar potential. Identified the specific characteristics of PISF channels and watercourses considering the regional geography, meteorology, irradiation, and social peculiarities. And, finally, assessed the feasibility of covering the watercourses with solar panels. The results reveal that covering all current PISF channels with PV panels could save up to 25,000 cubic meters of water per day, significantly contributing to water security and improving the quality of life for the local population. Additionally, the project could generate 1200 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, meeting the energy demands of the transposition pumps during peak hours and promoting energy efficiency within the project. This study aims to quantify meteorological–hydrological drought propagations and examine the potential impacts by climatic variability, LULC change (LULC), and human regulations. An integrated observation-modeling framework quantifies drought propagation intervals and assesses mechanisms influencing hydrological droughts. Meteorological droughts are characterized using the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI), and hydrological droughts are assessed through the Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) across diverse climatic zones. Cross-correlation analysis between SPEI and SSI time series identifies the lag time associated with the highest correlation as the drought propagation interval. Mechanisms are investigated via a coupled empirical-process modeling framework incorporating the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Discrepancies between simulated and observed SSI time series help quantify the extent of human regulation impacts on hydrological drought characteristics and propagation. The Yellow River Basin (YRB), divided into six subzones based on climate characteristics, is selected as the case study. Key findings include: (1) Meteorological droughts were extremely severe across most YRB during the 1990s, while the 2000s showed some mitigation primarily due to precipitation increases. (2) Hydrological droughts and propagation times from meteorology to hydrology demonstrated substantial spatiotemporal variability. In general, summer propagation times were shorter than other seasons. (3) Propagation times were shorter in arid regions with cropland or built-up land cover versus grassland and woodland, while the reverse held for humid regions. (4) Human regulations prolonged propagation times, likely due to reservoir regulations designed to overcome water deficits. The Ebinur Lake Basin is an ecologically sensitive area in an arid region. Investigating its land use and land cover (LULC) change and assessing and predicting its ecosystem service value (ESV) are of great importance for the stability of the basin's socioeconomic development and sustainable development of its ecological environment. Based on LULC data from 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020, we assessed the ESV of the Ebinur Lake Basin and coupled the grey multi-objective optimization model with the patch generation land use simulation model to predict ESV changes in 2035 under four scenarios: business-as-usual (BAU) development, rapid economic development (RED), ecological protection (ELP), and ecological–economic balance (EEB). The results show that from 1990 to 2020, the basin was dominated by grassland (51.23%) and unused land (27.6%), with a continuous decrease in unused land and an increase in cultivated land. In thirty years, the total ESV of the study area increased from 18.62 billion to 67.28 billion yuan, with regulation and support services being the dominant functions. By 2035, cultivated land increased while unused land decreased in all four scenarios compared with that in 2020. The total ESV in 2035 under the BAU, RED, ELP, and EEB scenarios was 68.83 billion, 64.47 billion, 67.99 billion, and 66.79 billion yuan, respectively. In the RED and EEB scenarios, ESV decreased by 2.81 billion and 0.49 billion yuan, respectively. In the BAU scenario, provisioning and regulation services increased by 6.05% and 2.93%, respectively. The ELP scenario, focusing on ecological and environmental protection, saw an increase in ESV for all services. This paper can assist policymakers in optimizing land use allocation and provide scientific support for the formulation of land use strategies and sustainable ecological and environmental development in the inland river basins of arid regions. Tecoma stans is a widely distributed tall ornamental shrub in the plains of Indian subcontinent and is considered an invasive species across Argentina, Australia, South Africa, Pacific Islands and tropical regions of Asia. Besides having an ornamental significance, T. stans has been extensively investigated for its pharmaceutical applications as a source of bioactive compounds. In addition, the shrub is cultivated commercially as a potted flowering plant. We believe that T. stans, being a hardy, invasive and aggressively growing species, holds a considerable potential and a promising solution for re-greening waste and degraded lands outside its invasive range, due to its wider adaptability and drought tolerant characteristics. The shrub is an excellent source of pollen and nectar, that attracts diverse insect-pollinators and several species of birds. The prudent plantation of this shrub has the potential to restore the ecology of barren landscapes, that can change its perspective of 'being invasive' to 'being ecologically healthy' across the tropical, semi-arid and subtropical regions worldwide. This paper reviews the current updates on ecology, life cycle including morphology, plant growth characteristics, flowering phenology, reproductive biology, breeding system and fruiting of T. stans. Spent coffee ground (SCG) consists of the remainder left after brewing the coffee grounds. Due to its valuable composition, SCG can provide sufficient nutrients and support plant growth, particularly in arid agricultural lands where soil fertility needs to be improved. However, the effects of SCG are highly dependent on their nature (raw or treated) and the application rate. SCG treatments namely composting and vermi-composting or pyrolysis could result in a more useful product for agricultural use, making it easy to overcome the SCG phytotoxic effect. In this paper a critical review of the researches on SCG was presented. The aim of this review was (1) to highlight the difference between the characteristics of composted, vermi-composted and pyrolyzed SCG with respect to the raw one, and (2) to outline their impacts on both of the physico-chemical properties of the soil as well as the growth of plant. In summary, adding raw SCG may have benefits for physical chemical properties of the soil but not for plant growth, because of the phytotoxic components including polyphenols. Therefore, the application of raw SCG for plant production purposes, even at low rates (equivalent to 2.5%) is not recommended. The negative effect on plant growth can be overcome by SCG vermi-composting or composting/pyrolysis at 270 and 400 °C. Therefore, vermi-composting can be efficiently applied for SCG pre-treatment before their reuse as a soil fertilizer to ameliorate the properties of the soil and subsequently plant nutrition. Droughts and climate change are causing severe and persistent dust storms in the arid and hot regions. The potential existence of significant relationships between the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI), Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the MERRA-2 dust column mass density data are thus investigated in the State of Kuwait during 1990–2021 as a study case in the hot and arid regions. The findings show that the correlation starts from ONI-DJF (December–January-February) with the Pearson test value of -0.36 and increasing to a value of -0.55 on ONI-AMJ (April-May-June), the same results were obtained when applying the Spearman correlation test. The correlation exists between the July dust column mass density and IOD-January with a value of -0.484 and − 0.544 over Pearson and ' 'Spearman's test, respectively, all estimated p-values are lower than 0.05. The results of the One-Way ANOVA show that the output is pretty straightforward and statistically significant at p > 0.05, which was confirmed by the nonparametric Kruskal–Walli's test and Mann-Whitney Test. This considerable correlation means that active dust storms are linked with La Niña, while light dust storms occur during the El Niño event. A positive correlation occurs between precipitation and ONI - SON (September-October-November), while a negative correlation is found between precipitation and IOD-July. Our preliminary findings in this paper indicate that an appearance of -0.7°C in ONI-DJF could serve as a definitive marker of the La Nina phase and an indicator for at-risk communities to prepare for the expected activity dust storm. The degree of coupling coordination between Drinking Water Carrying Capacity (DWCC) and Population Spatial Agglomeration (PSA) is a primary indicator for assessing the sustainable development of society. However, current research using quantitative model methods to explore relationships between the DWCC and the PSA is extremely rare. In order to provide theoretical and methodological support for research of regional population control or water resource allocation, based on the idea of coupling and coordination in physics, this paper constructs a Comprehensive Evaluation Model of Drinking Water Carrying Capacity (CEMDWCC), a Population Spatial Aggregation Index Model (PSAIM) and a Coupling Coordination Model of Human Water Relationship (CCM-HWR). Then, we use of the output results of the CEMDWCC and the PSAIM as the input parameters for the CCM-HWR to integrate these three models together. Through the above processing, we deduce a quantitative analysis method for the degree of coupling and coordination between the DWCC and the PSA. On this basis, we further use Kunming, a region of the water-deficient severely as a research area to discuss the coupling coordination relationships of the DWCC and the PSA during 20 years from 1996 to 2015. The results demonstrate that, on the one hand, in the time dimensions, the coupling degree of the DWCC and the PSA fluctuates little, and it is basically in a straight development state during the 20-year study period. Moreover, the degree of coordination between them is moderately unbalanced and has not fluctuated much for many years in this period. This shows that the DWCC and the PSA have not yet reached a positive interaction state, which is not conducive to sustainable development in the future. On the other hand, in the spatial dimensions, there are certain spatial differences in different regions. These differences are explicitly manifested in the degree of coupling and coordination, which is the better in regions with more developed economies. On the whole, the results of the study are more consistent with the actual situation in the study area. In other words, the economically developed regions have relatively high population spatial concentration, and the DWCC has also reached a relatively high state. Moreover, in these areas, the coupling relationship between the DWCC and the PSA remains relatively stable, and the coordination relationship between them is more harmonious and orderly. As can be seen from the above research results, the research method in this paper can quantitatively analyze the coupling and coordination relationships between the DWCC and the PSA. Therefore, this method is of great importance for promoting research for the sustainable development of population, resources, environment, economy, and society in arid regions of the world. Studying the internal relationship between urbanization process and cultivated land change can reveal the differential law of different urbanization processes and effectively protect cultivated land resources. Using the land-use change analysis method, this paper analyzed the quantity and quality change of cultivated land during the process of urbanization in the Bohai Rim region from 1990 to 2020 and explored its driving mechanism. The results show that the urbanization level in the Bohai Rim region increases by 31.06%, and 120 km2 farmland will be occupied for every 1% increase in urbanization level. The level of urbanization is higher in Beijing and Tianjin, medium in Liaoning and Shandong, and lower in Hebei. The area of cultivated land decreased year by year, and the decrease in dry land was the largest, followed by paddy land. Hebei, Shandong, and Liaoning have a high contribution rate to the reduction in cultivated land around the Bohai Sea. Population urbanization, spatial urbanization, and other factors have a significant impact on the study area, while economic urbanization and life urbanization show different laws. It is suggested that the development of urbanization can be promoted in a timely and appropriate manner, and the harmonious development of urbanization can be promoted by optimizing the layout of land use and avoiding excessive occupation of cultivated land at the expense of food security and ecological environment. Climate change and human activities have massively impacted the hydrological cycle. Thus, it is of the greatest concern to examine the effect of climate change on water management, especially at the regional level, to understand the possible future shifts in water supply and water-related crises and support regional water management. Fortunately, there is a high degree of ambiguity in determining the effect of climate change on water requirements. In this paper, the statistical downscaling (SDSM) model is applied to simulate the potential impact of climate on crop water requirements (CWR) by downscaling ET0 in the region of Western Maharashtra, India, for the future periods, viz., the 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s, across three meteorological stations (Pune, Rahuri, and Solapur). Four crops, i.e., cotton, soybean, onion, and sugarcane, were selected during the analysis. The Penman-Monteith equation calculates reference crop evapotranspiration (ET0). Furthermore, in conjunction with the crop coefficient (Kc) equation, it calculates crop evapotranspiration (ETc)/CWR. The predictor variables were extracted from the National Centre for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) reanalysis dataset for 1961–2000 and the HadCM3 for 1961–2099 under the H3A2 and H3B2 scenarios. The results indicated by SDSM profound good applicability in downscaling due to satisfactory performance during calibration and validation for all three stations. The projected ET0 indicated an increase in mean annual ET0 compared to the present condition during the 2030s, 2050s, and 2080s. The ET0 would increase for all months (in summer, winter, and pre-monsoon seasons) and decrease from June to September (monsoon season). The estimated future CWR shows variation in the range for cotton (− 0.97 to 2.48%), soybean (− 2.09 to 1.63%), onion (0.49 to 4.62%), and sugarcane (0.05 to 2.86%). The significance of this research lies in its contribution to understanding the potential impacts of climate change at a regional level. This study provides valuable insights into the expected changes in water demand for key crops. Socio-scientific contributions—including Anthropology—are scarce. This has resulted in a limited understanding of the socio-cultural dimensions of tipping point phenomena at the local level. This paper contributes to ongoing discussion and provides an ethnographic study of local perceptions of desertification tipping points (DTPs) amongst Ovaherero pastoralists in Namibia's semi-arid Okakarara constituency. Following a qualitative approach, this study shows that experienced farmers are aware of these phenomena and have accumulated extensive knowledge enabling them to identify and anticipate DTPs in different, complementary ways. This paper analyzes spatial and temporal changes of aridity in Argentina (1961–2022). The aridity degree, using Climatic Research Unit (CRU) monthly data, was defined through six climate types classified by De Martonne Aridity Index (DMI). Argentina presents a very arid, arid and semiarid region that extends from Puna to Patagonia, alongside two humid and very humid regions: one located in the Chaco-Pampas Plains and Mesopotamia, and another in the Patagonian Andes. Between these regions, there are subhumid areas with marked aridity variations. These structures persist over time, but advances or setbacks were observed in their bordering areas, with significant changes in the Andes (leading to more arid conditions) and the southwestern Pampas Plains (leading to more humid conditions) during the historical period. The contribution of temperature and precipitation changes to these DMI changes was quantified, indicating that precipitation modulated the DMI spatial changes, while temperature intensified or weakened the change magnitudes. The extension variations of the arid and semiarid regions in Argentina were related to three climate variability modes (El Niño – Southern Oscillation [ENSO], Pacific Decadal Oscillation [PDO] and South Atlantic Ocean Dipole [SAOD]). Significant correlations were found with PDO (r < 0) and SAOD (r > 0), which indicate that an increase in the area occupied by arid and semiarid climates are associated with PDO negative phase or SAOD positive phase. This paper investigated whether rainfall promotes dilution or increase in nutrient concentrations and which land use indicators are the main predictors of nutrients in intermittent rivers in a large Brazilian semiarid region. The total phosphorus (TP) and total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) were monitored between 2013 and 2018 at 92 river water quality monitoring sites. The monthly rainfall (Rn) was obtained from 575 rain gauges. Pearson's correlation (R) between Rn and nutrient concentration was performed. The correlation patterns were also analysed based on land use data: urban area (%), agricultural field area (%), demographic density (inhabitants/km2), sewer system coverage (%), and reservoir density (reservoir/km2). Backward stepwise regression was performed to identify predictors of nutrient concentrations. The results revealed a marginal effect of rainfall on nutrients when the effects of urbanisation outweigh all other aspects. However, in regions with greater accumulated rainfall and lower reservoir density, the rainfall was related to a linear increase in nutrient concentrations (R > 0.8). Contrastingly, in the basins with less accumulated rainfall and greater inter-basin hydrological disconnection, there was a linear reduction in nutrient concentration (R < − 0.5). In the backward stepwise regression, sewer system coverage and Rn had the greatest influence for TP, and the urban area was the strongest predictor for TIN. Importantly, our results demonstrated that in semiarid rivers in densely populated regions, there is no single pattern of variability in nutrient concentration, on a wide scale of assessment. Qanat system, as a great human heritage, contributes to the sustainable management of groundwater in the arid and semiarid regions of the world. The main aim of this paper was to efficiency assessment of the environmental variables in the construction of the Qanat system in Iran. Using the geographical information system (GIS) and statistical method of receiver operation characteristic (ROC), the efficiency of 20 environmental variables was assessed based on divisions of 30 major hydrological basins. Results revealed that most physical parameters and anthropogenic characteristics have significant effects on the construction of Qanat water lines with an AUC index > 0.6. The Pearson correlation test also confirmed the positive and significant relationships between the Qanat system and mentioned environmental parameters. From a geological viewpoint, the results highlighted the effective role of Quaternary aged alluvial sediments with very high permeability and low density of crust rocks in arid soils of arid and semiarid regions, such as playa fields in NamakTehran, Kavir, Lut, and Siahkuh basins. Regarding the spatial expansion of the Qanat system in Iran, the higher effects of some test variables, such as the climatic element of temperature, fault density, and drainage density, were rejected due to poor discrimination values of the AUC index < 0.6. In this paper frequency analysis of annual extreme daily rainfall of 14 gauging stations located in an arid zone of Iran were performed using parametric and nonparametric approaches. The parametric methods include normal, two- and three-parameter log-normal, two-parameter gamma, Pearson and log-Pearson type III, extreme value type I (Gumbel), generalized extreme value and generalized logistic distributions. The nonparametric approach is Fourier series method. The data were fitted to all of above mentioned models and the results showed that the goodness of fit of the data to Fourier series is much better than other parametric methods. Thus the Fourier series can be used as an alternative approach for frequency analysis of extreme daily rainfall in an arid zone. In addition, the quantiles can be calculated by the Fourier series. Water system management is a worldwide challenge, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Ecological water conveyance projects aim to raise the groundwater table, thereby saving natural vegetation and curbing ecological deterioration. Since 2000, these projects have been implemented in the arid zone of northwest China, with generally successful outcomes. Taking a portion of the lower reaches of the Tarim River as the study area, this paper analyzes in detail the ecohydrological effects which have occurred since the launching of artificial water conveyance 20 years ago. The results show that the groundwater table in the upper, middle and lower segments of the Tarim River's lower reaches has been raised on average 4.06, 4.83 and 5.13 m, respectively, while the area of surface water bodies connected to those sections has expanded from 49.00 km2 to 498.54 km2. At the same time, Taitema Lake, which is the terminal lake of the Tarim River, has been revived and now boasts a water area of 455.27 km2. Other findings indicate that the surface ecological response is extremely sensitive and that the area of natural vegetation has expanded to 1423 km2. Furthermore, the vegetation coverage, vegetation index (NDVI), and Net Primary Productivity (NPP) have increased by 132 km2, 0.07 and 7.6 g C m−2, respectively, and the Simpson dominance, McIntosh evenness, and Margalef richness indices have risen by 0.33, 0.35 and 0.49, respectively, in the monitored sample sites. As well, the carbon sink area has expanded from 1.54% to 7.8%. Given the increasing intensity of the occurrence of extreme hydrological events and successive dry years, similar ecological water conveyance projects should be considered elsewhere in China and in other parts of the world. The most robust approach to ecological monitoring and assessment is the use of regionally calibrated indicators. These should be calculated based on collocated biological (response) and physicochemical (stressor) variables and an objective rating and scoring system. In developing countries, a frequent lack of financial and technical resources for monitoring has led to many environmental problems being overlooked, such as the degradation of streams, rivers, and watersheds. In this paper, we propose the Karun Macroinvertebrate Tolerance Index (KMTI) for application to rivers in the Karun River basin, which is the largest watershed in Iran, draining semi-arid mountainous regions. The KMTI is the first biological index specifically developed and calibrated for Iranian water resources. Benthic macroinvertebrates, physical habitat, hydromorphic, and water quality data were collected and measured at 54 sites across four seasons in 2018 and 2019. A total of 101 families of benthic macroinvertebrates belonging to eight classes and 21 orders were identified, and tolerance values were determined for 95 families. The KMTI was found to be most efficient in identifying ecological degradation when data were used from winter samples with a discrimination efficiency (DE) 90% and a four-season mean of 84.3%. Background: Understanding the climate variability at local scale could help suggest local adaptation responses to manage climate associated risks. This paper analyzed the variability and trend of climate in semi-arid Borana zone of southern Ethiopia over the period 1981–2018 using Mann–Kendall (MK) test, Sen's Slope Estimator (SEE) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation technique. Gridded (4 km * 4 km) climate data (daily precipitation, daily maximum temperature (Tmax) and minimum temperature (Tmin)) were collected from National Meteorology Agency (NMA) of Ethiopia. Results: The results revealed the study area received a mean monthly precipitation of 39.19 mm and a monthly mean Tmax and Tmin of 29.66 °C and 16.31 °C were observed respectively. Rainfall shows a significant increasing trend during August, October and November and extremely variable during December, January and February where CV > 100%. Tmax shows a significant warming trend during August but January, February, August and October exhibited similar trend for Tmin. Rainfall and Tmin shows a significant trend during Meher and no trend for the rest of the seasons. Mean annual rainfall shows a significant increase where no trend observed for both Tmax and Tmin at this timescale. Decadal rainfall and Tmin exhibited no trend but Tmax show significant warming trend during 2001–2010 decade. Better rainfall and cooler temperature were observed in the north central, northeastern and northwestern whereas the southeastern and southwestern regions were drier and warmer. Conclusion: Rainfall is highly variable than temperature both at temporal and spatial scales in Borana. The intensity of rainfall decreases from the northeastern and northwestern parts towards the southwest while temperature increased from the north central parts towards the southwest for Tmax and the southeast for Tmin. The effect of topography is substantial for the local scale variability observed in the study area. This paper proposes a Water Access Index (WAI). Using this tool, decision-makers can identify and prioritize areas that need state intervention to develop actions to guarantee rural population access to water. Thus, was carried out is a case study, rural communities in the semi-arid region of Brazil to validate the suggested method. The WAI is based on a combined method of multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA), Geographic Information System (GIS), cluster analysis (CA) using Ward's agglomeration method and participation of rural inhabitants. The data for calculating the WAI were obtained by conducting interviews following a script of themes in the structured questionnaire closed to 370 residents of the communities evaluated. To calculate the WAI, weightings were used, in which the scores of the indicators and the weights of the dimensions were determined and analyzed using the Delphi method, what found to be a valid method for calculating the dimensions and indicators weights. Due to difficulty of rural population to have water access and suffer from drought, the proposed model showed appropriate to conduct a robust and well-structured decision-making. The main contributions were the study in region suffering from drought and difficulty in water access, as well as the combination of MCDA, SIG, CA and participation of rural inhabitants methods to aid in this problem. For use in other areas, researchers need to conduct public and specialized consultations to adjust the dimension weights, so the WAI method can estimate the water access situation and generate maps anywhere in the world for decision-making. In this paper, Changji, Xinjiang, northwest China, was selected as the study area, and platinum group elements (PGEs) in PM2.5 were quantified by ICP-MS using microwave digestion. The results indicated that the average concentrations (and range) of Rh, Pd, and Pt in PM2.5 were 0.21 (n.d. −1.41) ng/m3, 8.09 (n.d. −59.50) ng/m3, and 0.12 (n.d. −0.83) ng/m3, respectively. The concentration of Pd was significantly higher than Rh and Pt. Moreover, the seasonal variations of Rh and Pd were the same: highest in summer and lower in other seasons. However, the seasonal variation of Pt was opposite to that of Rh and Pd: highest in winter and lower in other seasons. Seasonal differences in emission sources of PGEs and the climatic characteristics of arid regions played important roles in the seasonal changes of PGEs. Rh and Pd had a common source and similar diurnal variation. The major influencing factors were traffic volume and meteorological conditions. The diurnal variation regularity of Pt was different from Rh and Pd. The superimposed effect of vehicle exhaust emissions and coal-fired emissions was the main reason why the diurnal variation of Pt was more complicated than those of Rh and Pd. Background: Below-normal availability of water for a considerable period of time induces occurrence of drought. This paper investigates the Spatio-temporal characteristics of meteorological drought under changing climate. The climate change was analyzed using delta based statistical downscaling approach of RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 in R software packages. The meteorological drought was assessed using the Reconnaissance Drought Index (RDI). Results: The result of climate change projections showed that the average annual minimum temperature will be increased by about 0.8–2.9 °C. The mean annual maximum temperature will be also increased by 0.9–3.75 °C. The rainfall projection generally showed an increasing trend, it exhibited an average annual increase of 3.5–13.4 % over the study area. The projected drought events reached its maximum severity indicated extreme drought in the years 2043, 2044, 2073, and 2074. The RDI value shows drought will occurred after 1–6 and 2–7 years under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5 emission scenarios respectively over the study area. Almost more than 72 % of the current and future spatial coverage of drought in the study area will be affected by extreme drought, 22.3 % severely and 5.57 % also moderate drought. Conclusions: Therefore, the study helps to provide useful information for policy decision makers to implement different adaptation and mitigation measures of drought in the region. The availability, accessibility, and sustainability of resources can enhance or jeopardize the security of meeting human needs for water, energy, and food in several regions of the world. For this reason, it is crucial to propose strategies that allow quantifying the current situation of resource security and preventing alarming scenarios in the future. The objective of this paper is to assess the current condition of food, energy, and water security of a region with rampant economic development, but struggling with natural resources as a result of its adverse climatic conditions. An approach for assessing the water–energy–food security in arid or semiarid areas is presented through different scenarios considering the availability, accessibility, and sustainability of the involved resources. The proposed approach is applied in the State of Nuevo León in Mexico, which is the second-most important state regarding contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product. Nevertheless, the rapid increase in its population and the semiarid climate condition with precedents of natural catastrophes jeopardize the continuity of its development. Results show that the state may not be able to meet the demands of water and food due to the stress generated on its resources. In contrast, the energy situation is more promising with the implementation of energy from renewable sources. The analysis is carried out over a past time period and making projections until 2030, providing a tool to be able to make decisions in the medium and long term. The main goal is to propose preventive measures and to ensure sustainable planning covering economic, social, and environmental needs without compromising the well-being of future generations. In this sense, the implementation of new policies for the water sector is analyzed, with the aim of reducing domestic and agricultural consumption, targeting improvements in the evaluated indices. The literature on barriers to climate change adaptation has largely focused on non-climatic barriers and has provided less insight into climate-induced barriers. Responding to this lacuna, this paper examines the connections between climate change and agricultural adaptation strategies of smallholder farmers in northern Ghana. Results from the qualitative fieldwork show that climatic changes have been accompanied by increases in climate change extremes (CCEs) over the last three decades. In order to adapt, smallholder farmers use improved crop varieties and other support strategies. Paradoxically, however, CCEs have undermined these strategies in several instances, causing crop yields to fall short of their actual potential and leading to financial indebtedness. Therefore, the results showcase that overcoming non-climatic barriers to the uptake of agricultural adaptation strategies is a necessary but insufficient condition for achieving successful adaptation outcomes. The relationship between human behaviour and vulnerability is interactive, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. This paper analyses vulnerability and human behaviour in the core areas of Qilian Mountains National Park, which is located in Qilian and Sunan counties. We used the vulnerability index and grey correlation degree methods to analyse the data. The results show that from 2005 to 2017, the vulnerability degree in the Qilian Mountain area decreased gradually (Qilian County vulnerability decreased from 0.0357 to − 0.2237, and Sunan County vulnerability decreased from 0.1428 to − 0.4489). In 2017, the degree had reached its lowest value due to central and local government policy (− 0.2237 and − 0.4489). Considering that human behaviour contributed to the vulnerability degree, we find that land use and agricultural development mode, the acceleration of industrialisation and changes in the spatial patterns of human activities, and the development of urbanization and changes in resident identities are the main concepts driving the relationship between human behaviour and vulnerability. The innovative assessment indicators developed in this study can be applied to thoroughly explore the relationship between human behaviour and vulnerability and to find the influencing factors. Maize is a major crop in the semiarid region of northwestern China, and, in recent years, severe drought events have often severely impacted local maize production. In this paper, an assessment model for maize drought vulnerability in the semiarid region of northwestern China was constructed after an in-depth analysis of factors linked to drought vulnerability. The model establishes an evaluation index system for drought vulnerability and assesses the level of environmental sensitivity, degree of exposure, crop sensitivity, and adaptability. An assessment and a regionalization analysis of maize drought vulnerability were then conducted for the semiarid region of northwestern China. The results showed the spatial distribution characteristics of environmental sensitivity, degree of exposure, crop sensitivity, and adaptability. The high and sub high vulnerable areas for maize were located mainly in the northern and southern parts of the warm temperate zone (District I A) and covered most of the central region of the middle temperature zone (District II A). The low and sub low vulnerable areas were in the central part of District I A, in the eastern and western part of District II A, and across the whole of the warm temperate zone (Districts I B), the middle temperature zone (Districts II B), and the plateau area of the sub temperate zone (District III). The main factors affecting high drought vulnerability varied across different areas. Global warming and depletion of petroleum resources have made the scientists to focus on new passive cooling techniques to reduce the indoor temperature of residential and commercial buildings. This paper explores the benefits of using coconut fibre composite as a passive cooling roof and quantifies those benefits in terms of heat flow changes through field experiment and compares them to the base case of standard roof in arid regions. The research also focussed on the usage of this material in combination with radiation reflectors such as aluminium and the effect of air gap between coconut fibre composite and aluminium reflector on the energy efficiency of the buildings. Experimental investigation showed a substantial reduction in room air and concrete roof slab temperature of coconut fibre composite with aluminium reflector room in comparison with the conventional roof. A maximum reduction of 5.99 °C (16.59%) and 8.39 °C (23.8%) were observed in room air and roof slab temperature of coconut fibre composite–aluminium roof with an air gap of 40 cm between them. It was also observed that as the air gap between coconut fibre composite and aluminium reflector is increased, the room air and roof slab temperature were reduced due to enhanced convective cooling. Compared to a standard roof, the indoor air temperature of coconut fibre composite roof was reduced by a maximum of 2.2 °C (5.86%), 2.9 °C and 5.99 °C (16.59%) for 0, 20 and 40 cm air gap between the coconut fibre composite and aluminium reflector, respectively. It is convincingly demonstrated that the coconut fibre composite roof with aluminium reflector can significantly affect the indoor air and roof surface temperature of the roofs during the hot summer days. Soil and water conservation (SWC) practices like that of erosion control and soil fertility measures were commonly practiced in the semiarid region of southern Mali since the 1980s. The SWC practices were mainly meant to increase water availability in the subsurface, reduce farm water runoff and gully formation and improve nutrient content of the soil, thereby increasing crop yield. Despite such efforts to promote at scale SWC practices, the landscape of southern Mali is still affected by high rates of runoff and soil erosion and low crop yield in farmers' fields. Data are lacking on previous beneficial SWC practices that could be adapted for wider application. In this paper, a watershed approach to managing rainfed agriculture is presented to show potential benefits of SWC practices at field and watershed scales. The approach included (1) community participation in establishing and monitoring new sets of hydro-meteorological monitoring stations and field experiments; (2) studying the dynamics and consumptive water uses of different land uses over time; and (3) evaluating the biophysical and economic advantages of SWC practices implemented in the watershed. Results showed that over a period of 34 years (1980–2014) cropping area and consumptive water uses of crops (sorghum and cotton) increased at the expenses of natural vegetation. However, the yield of these crops remained low, indicating that soil fertility management and soil moisture were insufficient. Precipitation directly affects the socioeconomic development in the inland river basins of the arid regions of Northwest China. However, the scarcity of observed data makes it hard to adequately investigate precipitation changes. To help solve this problem, we evaluated the precipitation patterns and trends of 19 models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) in the northern mountains, central basin, and southern mountains of the Tarim River Basin based on observed data from 1965 to 2014, and conducted a comparison with CMIP5. The results showed that the CMIP6 models have spatial differences in capturing the monthly precipitation over the Tarim River Basin. Although it can capture the changes in monthly precipitation of mountains and basins, it does not capture the monthly maximum precipitation in mountains quite well. CMIP6 models capture precipitation with greater deviations in the wet season than in the dry season, especially for the peak precipitation in June and July. Underestimation of annual precipitation in the northern mountains is common in CMIP6 models with the RMSE of 42.51–50.55 mm. Most models capture the wetting trends in the southern mountains, but their reproduction of wetting trends in the northern mountains differs significantly in coverage. The change rates of annual precipitation from 2015 to 2100 in the northern mountains, central basin, and southern mountains under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 are 0.20–0.29 mm/a, 0.10–0.18 mm/a, and 0.23–0.49 mm/a, respectively. The wetting trend in the Tarim River Basin is significantly higher under SSP5-8.5 than under SSP2-4.5. The comparison between CMIP5 and CMIP6 indicates that CMIP6 models are generally able to capture its fluctuating characteristics. However, there is no single model that can simultaneously represent the observed precipitation changes in the Tarim River Basin, especially for the differences in basins and mountains. Drought is one of the most relevant natural disasters, especially in arid regions such as Iran. One of the requirements to access reliable drought monitoring is long-term and continuous high-resolution precipitation data. Different climatic and global databases are being developed and made available in real time or near real time by different agencies and centers; however, for this purpose, these databases must be evaluated regionally and in different local climates. In this paper, a near real-time global climate model, a data assimilation system, and two gridded gauge-based datasets over Iran are evaluated. The ground truth data include 50 gauges from the period of 1980 to 2010. Drought analysis was carried out by means of the Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) at 2-, 3-, 6-, and 12-month timescales. Although the results show spatial variations, overall the two gauge-based datasets perform better than the models. In addition, the results are more reliable for the western portion of the Zagros Range and the eastern region of the country. The analysis of the onsets of the 6-month moderate drought with at least 3 months' persistence indicates that all datasets have a better performance over the western portion of the Zagros Range, but display poor performance over the coast of the Caspian Sea. Base on the results of this study, the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) dataset is a preferred alternative for drought analysis in the region when gauge-based datasets are not available. This research introduces a hybrid humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination unit and dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) system to produce power and drinking water using the hot and humid waste air from buildings equipped with wind towers. The thermodynamic, exergeoeconomic and carbon footprint study of this hybrid system is conducted in five arid and semiarid regions, including Tehran, Isfahan, Birjand, Yazd and Kerman, located in Iran. The proposed hybrid system's thermodynamic, cost and CO2 emission rates are evaluated and compared by varying design parameters. The results indicate that increasing wind tower height and DSSC tilt angle significantly improve the thermodynamic performance of the system while rising water-to-air mass flow rate ratio (MR) and saline water temperature, respectively, lessen the cost and CO2 emission rates of the system in all desired regions. Furthermore, the system's optimum performance in each zone is identified using the multi-objective moth-flame optimization (MOMFO) and decision-making procedure. Optimization results indicate that the highest power and freshwater of 783.4 W and 120.5 kg/month, respectively, can be achieved in Birjand, and the highest energy and exergy efficiencies are obtained by 10.8% and 11.41% in Kerman. Moreover, the system delivers the lowest cost and CO2 emission rates of 0.73 $/month and 4.61 kgCO2/month in Tehran. The obtained theoretical results can be a guide for optimal design and practical application of such a system in arid and semiarid regions from the thermodynamic, economic and environmental perspectives. This study analysed households' use of formal and informal finance, non-finance livelihood diversification and the social safety net measures in coping with droughts and floods. It employed a cross-sectional survey of 1370 households across 27 counties in Kenya that are prone to droughts and floods. Bivariate probit regressions reveal that households employ multiple coping measures related to finance, the social safety net and non-finance choices. The use of coping measures vary by household income, household dependency ratio, geographic and agro-climatic contexts, as well as the household head's age and educational attainment. Further, the findings reveal that the use of the social safety net and non-finance coping mechanisms demonstrate complementarities in coping with droughts, suggesting that opportunities to benefit from the social safety net do not dampen livelihood diversification initiatives by the households. Additionally, households in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) depend to a large extent on the social safety net and non-finance livelihood diversification coping mechanisms, signalling the need to explore ways that encourage private sector development in promoting market-oriented coping strategies. Humid heat waves pose significant risks to human health and the ecosystem. Intuitively, rainfall often alleviates extreme humid heat. However, here we show that light rain often accompanies extreme humid heat, exacerbating its frequency and intensity, especially over arid and semi-arid regions compared to no rain and moderate-to-heavy rain cases. This is because light rain does not dramatically reduce solar radiation but increases near-surface humidity through enhanced surface evaporation. The water replenishment from light rain as well as a shallower planetary boundary layer is crucial for consecutive extremes where there are commonly sporadic drizzle days amidst several rain-free days. These extremes last longer than rain-free extremes. Current global climate models (GCMs) overestimate light rain. After reducing this bias in a GCM, underestimations of humid heat waves in energy-limited regions and overestimations in water-limited regions are largely alleviated. These findings underscore the underappreciated impact of light rain on extreme humid heat. The authors show that the frequency, intensity, and duration of extreme humid heat are exacerbated by light rain through the enhancement of the total enthalpy flux and the shallowing of the planetary boundary layer. Vadose zone soil moisture is often considered a pivotal intermediary water reservoir between surface and groundwater in semi-arid regions. Understanding its dynamics in response to changes in meteorologic forcing patterns is essential to enhance the climate resiliency of our ecological and agricultural system. However, the inability to observe high-resolution vadose zone soil moisture dynamics over large spatiotemporal scales hinders quantitative characterization. Here, utilizing pre-existing fiber-optic cables as seismic sensors, we demonstrate a fiber-optic seismic sensing principle to robustly capture vadose zone soil moisture dynamics. Our observations in Ridgecrest, California reveal sub-seasonal precipitation replenishments and a prolonged drought in the vadose zone, consistent with a zero-dimensional hydrological model. Our results suggest a significant water loss of 0.25 m/year through evapotranspiration at our field side, validated by nearby eddy-covariance based measurements. Yet, detailed discrepancies between our observations and modeling highlight the necessity for complementary in-situ validations. Given the escalated regional drought risk under climate change, our findings underscore the promise of fiber-optic seismic sensing to facilitate water resource management in semi-arid regions. The arid region of Northwest China (ARNC) has experienced a significantly higher warming rate than the global average and exhibits pronounced seasonal asymmetry, which has important implications for the region's water-dependent systems. To understand the spatiotemporal patterns and driving mechanisms of seasonal asymmetric warming in the ARNC, we investigated seasonal changes in temperature rise and their underlying causes based on station and reanalysis data. We found that the dominant season of temperature increase shifted from winter to spring. The contribution of spring warming to the total temperature increase rose from −5%–7% to 58%–59%, while the contribution of winter warming decreased from 60%–75% to −4%–9%. However, the mechanisms underlying spring warming and winter cooling differ. An increase in solar radiation caused by a decrease in cloud cover (R = −0.64) was the main reason for spring warming, while a strengthening Siberian High primarily drove winter cooling. Groundwater aquifers constitute the primary water supply for populations in arid regions, exemplified by the Goharkooh Plain in Iran's driest drainage basin, where conditions of high evapotranspiration and low precipitation prevail. With the escalating demand for water resources, driven mainly by agricultural expansion, the strategic management of groundwater assets has become increasingly critical. This study focuses on delineating groundwater potential zones (GWPZs) through an integrated approach combining multi-criteria decision analysis and geospatial tools. Based on an extensive literature review, nine thematic layers were selected and developed: lithology, geology, drainage density, slope gradient, elevation, vegetation cover, lineament density, land use, and precipitation. These criteria were initially weighted using the analytical hierarchical process (AHP) and subsequently integrated via weighted overlay analysis. In this research, the strategic selection of thematic layers for assessing groundwater potential in arid regions has been identified as an innovative approach that could significantly advance studies in similar settings. The analysis revealed that approximately 60% of the study area, primarily in the southwestern parts, exhibited moderate to very high groundwater potential. This potential is primarily attributed to the presence of alluvial deposits, low drainage density, and favorable slope and elevation conditions. Applying the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve yields an area under the curve (AUC) of 81.5%, indicating a relatively high level of predictive accuracy. These findings demonstrate the efficacy of this integrated approach, suggesting its broader applicability in regions with analogous groundwater challenges and management needs. Devising effective strategies to retard the negative impacts of extreme climatic events on water security in general and environmental water balance in specific is imperative, especially in semi-arid rural-Western-India, where climate change has markedly increased water scarcity in domestic and agricultural sectors. This exploratory research thus aimed at investigating the water budget against mismanagement of available water resources for remote-marginalized villages in rural-Nashik (West-India). Investigation entailed visual interpretation of LULC analysis (2008–2017) using fine-scale Google Earth imageries, rainfall-runoff analysis using SCS-CN method, determining the supply-demand potential of water storage structures using field-experimentations and PRA tools, and estimation of season-wise water-budget using hydrological (water-balance) equations. Results identified agriculture as the major land-use (~ 78%) followed by hilly regions (~ 16%) and water bodies (~ 3%). Surface runoff was found as the dominating hydrological phenomenon (33–89% of monsoonal rainfall) followed by surface storage (6–36% of annual rainfall) and groundwater flow (4–82% of annual rainfall). Deforestation over hills for firewood, which reduced forest cover by 52%, was observed as the primary concern for soil erosion, thereby siltation of water bodies and higher runoff against percolation. Erratic rainfall patterns (departure range − 42 to 83% during 1998–2017) coupled with sub-graded irrigational systems confined the agricultural practices to one season [South–West monsoon (June–September)]. High unmet drinking water demand (73% to 98%) forced women communities to fetch water by walking 4.5 ± 1.5 km. Considering the urgent response to collectively combat water-budget imbalance, integrated water security plans were proposed using decentralized participatory watershed development approaches. High-resolution oasis maps are imperative for understanding ecological and socio-economic development of arid regions. However, due to the late establishment and relatively niche nature of the oasis discipline, there are no high-precision datasets related to oases in the world to date. To fill this gap, detailed visual interpretation of remote sensing images on Google Earth Professional or Sentinel-2 was conducted in summer 2020, and for the first time, a high-precision dataset of China's oases (abbreviation HDCO) with a resolution of 1 meter was constructed. HDCO comprises 1,466 oases with a total area of 277,375.56 km2. The kappa coefficient for this dataset validated by the field survey was 0.8686 and the AUC value for the ROC curve was 0.935. In addition, information on the geographic coordinates, climatic conditions, major landforms, and hydrological features of each oasis was added to the attribute table of the dataset. This dataset enables researchers to quantitatively monitor location and area of oases, fosters exploration of the relationship between oases and human under climate change and urbanization. The vegetation of desert oasis regulates the regional microclimate in arid or hyper-arid regions. A wide range of studies on the oasis microclimate effects have been conducted under sunny conditions. However, less concern has been focused on microclimatic variations of oasis effects caused by the influences of different types and coverage of vegetation in oasis during other different weather events, especially during catastrophic weather conditions. Based on the measurements from 1 August, 2010 to 30 December, 2014 in the Qira oasis, a hyper arid zone of southern Taklimakan desert, Northwest China, this paper investigates the existences and variabilities of the oasis microclimate effects during dust storm, blown sand, floating dust, and rain events and analyzes the impacts of different types of vegetation (bare desert, sparse desert grassland, desert oasis dense shrub grassland and forests, and oasis crops and fruit trees) on desert oasis microclimates. Moreover, the importance of maintaining the oasis sustainability mirrored by the oasis microclimate effects is highlighted and discussed. Results show that the oasis with abundant vegetation exerts cooling and humidifying effects under four weather events relative to bare desert land. As a result of high wind velocities, the oasis microclimatic effects are weakened during catastrophic weather conditions such as dust storm or blown sand events. The type and coverage of vegetation and the topography as well as weather events jointly impact on the oasis microclimate effects. The findings of this work provide an implication for the conservation and restoration of oasis vegetation to maintain both the oasis microclimate environment and the sustainability of desert oasis. In Australian semiarid rangelands, there have been suggestions that kangaroo harvesting should be given much more serious consideration as a supplement or even replacement to income from domestic stock like cattle and sheep. The possibility of kangaroo harvesting ever being economically viable, however, is often dismissed due to the impossibility of constraining these freely roaming animals to a particular property. In this paper, we explore the extent to which landholders do have control of their harvests regardless of the activities on neighboring land. Three scenarios are investigated: a property with a porous border that is surrounded by a reserve, like a national park, that is much larger and where harvesting is prohibited; a pair of properties with porous borders where harvesting is permitted and landholders act cooperatively; and finally two properties with porous borders where harvesting is permitted and landholders act competitively. The results indicate that despite the freely roaming nature of kangaroos, private property owners can obtain harvests proportional to the extent to which their land and grazing resources are utilized. The present paper aimed to show the thermoregulatory responses of locally adapted Morada Nova sheep with different coat colors that were exposed to direct solar radiation in an equatorial semiarid region. Animals were classified into four groups according to the coat color as follows: (1) dark red, (2) intermediate red, (3) light red, and (4) white coats. Forty Morada Nova ewes were observed in for 7 consecutive months. The experimental variables measured were rectal temperature (RT), skin surface temperature (ST), respiratory rate (RR), skin surface evaporation (CE), respiratory evaporation (RE), and heat exchange by convection (HC) and radiation (R). Data were collected from 1100 to 1400 h after the animals were exposed to 30 min direct sunlight. The results showed that all groups maintained homeothermy. The RR was higher in the animals of groups 1 to 3, which also showed higher values for ST when compared to the white-coated animals. Sensible heat exchange mechanisms were not important for heat loss, and R was a significant source of heat gain from the environment for the animals. Groups 1, 2, and 3 used RR more intensely than group 4 (P value = 0.001); however, CE was higher for the white-coated animals. Arid regions can benefit from using native desert plants, which require minimal freshwater and can aid in remediating soil phytotoxic metals (PTMs) from traffic emissions. In this study, we assessed the ability of three native desert plants—Pennisetum divisum, Tetraena qatarensis, and Brassica tournefortii—to accumulate phytotoxic metals (PTMs) in their different plant organs, including leaves, stems, and roots/rhizomes. The PTMs were analyzed in soil and plant samples collected from Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). The results indicated significantly higher levels of PTMs on the soil surface than the subsurface layer. Brassica exhibited the highest concentrations of Fe and Zn, measuring 566.7 and 262.8 mg kg−1, respectively, while Tetraena accumulated the highest concentration of Sr (1676.9 mg kg−1) in their stems. In contrast, Pennisetum recorded the lowest concentration of Sr (21.0 mg kg−1), while Tetraena exhibited the lowest concentrations of Fe and Zn (22.5 and 30.1 mg kg−1) in their leaves. The roots of Pennisetum, Brassica, and Tetraena demonstrated the potential to accumulate Zn from the soil, with concentration factors (CF) of 1.75, 1.09, and 1.09, respectively. Moreover, Brassica exhibited the highest CF for Sr, measuring 2.34. Pennisetum, however, could not translocate PTMs from its rhizomes to other plant organs, as indicated by a translocation factor (TF) of 1. In contrast, Brassica effectively translocated the studied PTMs from its roots to the stem and leaves (except for Sr in the leaves). Furthermore, Pennisetum exclusively absorbed Zn from the soil into its leaves and stems, with an enrichment factor (EF) greater than 1. Brassica showed the ability to uptake the studied PTMs in its stem and leaves (except for Fe), while Tetraena primarily absorbed Sr and Zn into its stems. Based on the CF and TF results, Pennisetum appears to be a suitable species for phytostabilization of both Fe and Zn, while Brassica is well-suited for Sr and Zn polluted soils. Tetraena shows potential for Zn phytoremediation. These findings suggest that these plants are suitable for PTMs phytoextraction. The increasing global phenomenon of soil salinization has prompted heightened interest in the physiological ecology of plant salt and alkali tolerance. Halostachys caspica belonging to Amaranthaceae, an exceptionally salt-tolerant halophyte, is widely distributed in the arid and saline-alkali regions of Xinjiang, in Northwest China. Soil salinization and alkalinization frequently co-occur in nature, but very few studies focus on the interactive effects of various salt and alkali stress on plants. In this study, the impacts on the H. caspica seed germination, germination recovery and seedling growth were investigated under the salt and alkali stress. The results showed that the seed germination percentage was not significantly reduced at low salinity at pH 5.30–9.60, but decreased with elevated salt concentration and pH. Immediately after, salt was removed, ungerminated seeds under high salt concentration treatment exhibited a higher recovery germination percentage, indicating seed germination of H. caspica was inhibited under the condition of high salt-alkali stress. Stepwise regression analysis indicated that, at the same salt concentrations, alkaline salts exerted a more severe inhibition on seed germination, compared to neutral salts. The detrimental effects of salinity or high pH alone were less serious than their combination. Salt concentration, pH value, and their interactions had inhibitory effects on seed germination, with salinity being the decisive factor, while pH played a secondary role in salt-alkali mixed stress. Groundwater resources in arid and semiarid regions suffering from low precipitation, high temperatures, and high evaporation rates associated with anthropogenic stresses require appropriate and careful management to maintain water quality in the present and future. In this context, assessing the intrinsic vulnerability of the Triffa Plain phreatic aquifer is crucial to preserve the groundwater. In this study, we proceeded to the hydrogeological parameters' mapping and the inherent vulnerability evaluation using the classical DRASTIC method. In addition, we studied the reliability of estimating the recharge parameter by a qualitative approach. The study combines the DRASTIC, RIVA, and AHP techniques to improve and simplify the evaluation of the vulnerability of groundwater in agricultural areas. The AHP method weighed the parameters according to their relevance to the aquifer vulnerability process. The modified method can solve incomplete data problems, especially in agricultural areas where irrigation return flows are the major contributor to groundwater recharge. The DRASTIC and DRASTIC R-modified results delineated four regions, from extremely low to high sensitivity levels in the area. In comparison with the spatial distribution of nitrates and the original DRASTIC method, the DRASTIC R-modified method represents a realistic assessment with 12% (low), 78% (medium), and 10% (high) of the total area. Similarly, concerning the original DRASTIC method, the low vulnerability is 14%, medium 76%, and high 9%. The results were successfully validated with the spatial distribution and bivariate correlation whit nitrate concentrations. These findings highlight the robustness of incorporating a qualitative recharge parameter within the DRASTIC model, considering irrigation impact, rainfall intensity, and quantity. Several developing countries in Asia are relying on agricultural practices in which climate change is a challenging concern. The trends change in atmospheric parameters and vegetation indices are questioned and vague. Consequently, the trend variations of the environmental characteristics were introduced in the first decade of 21 century to better understand the trend changes and envisage the relationship between the atmospheric parameters and the vegetation cover. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer and the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder provide several atmospheric parameters, e.g., Air Temperature, Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), and Carbon Dioxide (CO2). In addition, NDVI was estimated and aimed at the role of the interactions among the atmospheric parameters based on statistical analysis. The results showed that AOD and NDVI were air temperature dependent; meanwhile, AOD, NDVI, and air temperature were exchanging and influencing one another. Furthermore, the average minimum air temperature of the region increased during this period and carbon dioxide was a time-dependant parameter that was rising at a steep slope, which may lead to environmental crises. The trend analysis outlines what policies, programs, and procedures should be used to balance the ecosystem and mitigate the climatic negative effects. Selecting highly nutritive fodder plants in arid regions can be a key to improving the livestock productivity. This work explores the variation in nutritive value of the leaves, stem, and shoots of five potential fodder plants of the Emirates of Fujairah, Erucaria hispanica, Haplophyllum tuberculatum, Convolvulus virgatus, Teucrium stocksianum, and Cleome Ibrachycarpa. influenced by two weather conditions, winter and spring. The plant samples underwent mineral composition, proximate, phytochemical, and heavy metals and two-way ANOVA. Weather data were accessed from National Center of Meteorology (NCM). Our findings reveal significant influences of collection time and species on nutritive content. Shoots collected in March exhibited higher ash (6.167%), crude protein (11.9%), crude fiber (14.89%), dry matter (45.86%), and total digestive nutrients (TDS) (48.35%), with lower tannin (5.11%) compared to January. Conversely, January-collected shoots had greater total sugar content (1.28 g/100 g). Plant organs played a crucial role, with leaves surpassing stems in Mg, P, Ca, K, Na, Mn, Zn, and Ni. Leaves also showed higher crude protein (23.33%), dry matter (92.26%), total ash (4.8%), and TDS (87.58%) compared to stems, while stems exhibited elevated crude fiber (17.45%) and tannin (4.53%). There is a need to assess the bioactive compounds found in these fodder species for the enhancement its effective use and maximize browsing of these species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water scarcity limits the survival and growth of planted-out seedlings in Ethiopia's semi-arid regions. Hydrogel, recently introduced in Ethiopia, is a super-absorbent polymer to reduce water stress. This study investigated its effect on the early survival and growth of Grevillea robusta seedlings in semi-arid areas. Relevant soil characteristics were analyzed. Four hydrogel levels (control, 3, 5, and 7 g/plant) were applied to the bottom of planting holes in a randomized complete block design with three replicates. Survival, Height, and Root Collar Diameter were measured at 6 and 14 months after planting. One-way ANOVA assessed hydrogel effects. No significant positive effects of hydrogel on survival or early growth compared to the control (0 g/plant) were observed in the sandy-loam soil. These findings suggest limited benefit under the study's specific conditions. Further research is crucial to explore the potential of hydrogels, considering broader ranges of application rates and methods, tree species, and environmental conditions. This knowledge may support forest restoration efforts in the face of severe land degradation, climate change, and variability in Ethiopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
