Curved displays can adjust their shape to accommodate different objects and are used in electronics and decorative lighting. Due to the immutable pixel spacing, existing commercial curved displays are flexible but not compatible with undevelopable surfaces. Inspired by kirigami and auxetic structures, we propose an approach that combines luminescent elements and rotating square tessellations to create a stretchable, arbitrary curve adaptive display. We connect square islands by vertical interconnects to relieve the stress concentration and provide extra deformation patterns. The vertical interconnects are patterned on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) using laser cutting and folded up via specially designed molds. Further, the freed-up space by folded interconnects allows the structure to be compressed. A prototype stretchable display is demonstrated that it can maintain electrical performance under biaxial strain and adapt to different Gaussian curvature surfaces, including cylindrical, spherical, saddle and arbitrary surfaces. Theoretical models and finite element calculations are established to describe the tensile behavior of the structures under different boundary conditions and agree with the experimental results. Stretchable and curved electronic devices are a promising technology trend due to their remarkable advantages. Many approaches have been developed to manufacture stretchable and curved electronics. Here, to allow such electronics to better serve practical applications, ranging from wearable devices to soft robotics, we propose a novel vertical serpentine conductor (VSC) with superior electrical stability to interconnect functional devices through a silicon-based microfabrication process. Conformal vacuum transfer printing (CVTP) technology was developed to transfer the networked platform onto complex curved surfaces to demonstrate feasibility. The mechanical and electrical performance were investigated numerically and experimentally. New approaches for the engineering of well-defined, pore modality, and multi-chemical functionality nanocomposites are crucial to generate the next generation of functional materials with recoverable and easy preparation properties. Here, a catalyst and heat free polymerization reaction is exploited and fabricated zwitterionic system around magnetic nanoparticles. N-aminoethyl piperazine propane sulfonate (AEPPS) and dopamine (DA) are introduced as the zwitterionic system, which provided abundant zwitterionic groups (NH2, SO3−, N+) and strong adhesion and various oxidation state properties. And that, the zwitterionic engineering will assemble between AEPPS and DA whereby Schiff base formation or Michael type addition. Whereafter, a series of sophisticated array of microscopic, spectroscopic, and structure techniques verify the formation of highly crosslinking internal zwitterionic architectures, well-defined core–shell structure, and better porosity. The zwitterionic structure–function relationships and striking porous structure are explored in a multi-interaction adsorption assay. The adsorption capacity of the magnetic nanocomposites was 1065.8 mg/g. And that, the system exhibited with hydrophilic-hydrophobic activity towards glycoprotein and better performance to bioactive protein (Ig-G) isolation form human whole blood sample. The synergistic enhancement interaction in hydrophilic target enrichment, easy preparation, and soft substrate properties of the AEPPS-DA zwitterionic materials make them intriguing candidates for sustainable biomedical loading and chromatographic separation. Objectives: AcMNPV is a kind of microbial insecticide that can significantly relieve the resistance of Spodoptera frugiperda to chemical pesticides. TPP is a widely used synergist, which can reduce the use of pesticides by inhibiting carboxylesterase. It is emergently needed to develop a biological control way of Spodoptera frugiperda. Results: GP64 mediates low-pH-triggered membrane fusion during entry by endocytosis and participates in AcMNPV particle budding. We explored the synergistic anti-insect activity of AcMNPV-gp64-EGFP and TPP. AcMNPV-gp64-EGFP could increase progeny virus proliferation and accelerate the transcription of 38k and vp39 genes. TPP could inhibit the carboxylesterase activity in the midgut of Spodoptera frugiperda larvae infected with AcMNPV-gp64-EGFP and enhance the virulence of AcMNPV-gp64-EGFP to Spodoptera frugiperda. Conclusions: TPP targeted carboxylesterase inhibition so that AcMNPV-gp64-EGFP could escape the antiviral response in insect hosts. Macrocyclization is an important process that affords morphed scaffold in biosynthesis of bioactive natural products. Nature has adapted diverse biosynthetic strategies to form macrocycles. In this work, we report the identification and characterization of a small enzyme AvmM that can catalyze the construction of a 16-membered macrocyclic ring in the biosynthesis of alchivemycin A (1). We show through in vivo gene deletion, in vitro biochemical assay and isotope labelling experiments that AvmM catalyzes tandem dehydration and Michael-type addition to generate the core scaffold of 1. Mechanistic studies by crystallography, DFT calculations and MD simulations of AvmM reveal that the reactions are achieved with assistance from the special tenuazonic acid like moiety of substrate. Our results thus uncover an uncharacterized macrocyclization strategy in natural product biosynthesis. Macrocyclization is an important process in bioactive natural product synthesis. Afforestation plays an important role in soil carbon storage and water balance. However, there is a lack of information on deep soil carbon and water storage. The study investigates the effect of returning farmland to the forest on soil carbon accumulation and soil water consumption in 20-m deep soil profile in the hilly and gully region of the Chinese Loess Plateau. Four sampling sites were selected: Platycladus orientalis (Linn.) Franco forest (PO: oriental arborvitae), Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. Forest (PT: southern Chinese pine), apple orchard (AO) and farmland (FL, as a control). Soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil inorganic carbon (SIC) content were measured in 50-cm sampling intervals of 20-m soil profiles, as well as the associated factors (e.g. soil water content). The mean SOC content of PT was the highest in the 1–5 m layer and that of FL was the lowest (p < 0.05). Compared with FL, the SOC storages of PO, PT and AO increased by 2.20, 6.33 and 0.90 kg m−2 (p > 0.05), respectively, in the whole profile. The SIC content was relatively uniform throughout the profile at all land-use types and SIC storage was 9–10 times higher than SOC storage. The soil water storage of PO, PT and AO was significantly different from that of FL with a decrease of 1169.32, 1161.60 and 1139.63 mm, respectively. After the 36-yrs implementation of the "Grain for Green" Project, SOC in 20 m soil profiles increased as a water depletion cost compared with FL. Further investigation is still needed to understand the deep soil water and carbon interactions regarding ecological restoration sustainability in the Northern Loess Plateau. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous studies indicate that vegetation and lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are closely related to climate change. However, the responses of vegetation and lakes to climate-related variables have rarely been contrastively studied. The Hulun Lake (HLL) and its surrounding grasslands in Northeast Inner Mongolia of China comprise a semi-arid region that has experienced intense climate change over the last several decades. This study aims to understand the key factors that control the variations in the lake area and vegetation cover over the last five decades in the HLL region, as well as contrastively investigate the different responses of the lake area and vegetation cover to climate-related variables. Analysis results indicate that the variations with increasing change rates in the HLL area were mainly controlled by precipitation fluctuation. Moreover, an increase or decrease in the air temperature and relative humidity could affect the response time of the HLL area to the change in precipitation. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) variations from 1990 to 1999 around the HLL region were mainly controlled by the intense local grazing rather than climatic restrictions. The fluctuation in NDVI after 1999 reflects the response of the vegetation cover to climatic change. The correlation analysis shows that the variations in the HLL area were closely related to the multi-year tendency of precipitation amount and to the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) with a long timescale. However, NDVI is sensitive to changes in short-term precipitation amount, such as seasonal precipitation, and in SPEI with a monthly timescale. The soil moisture at shallow depths (< 0.1 m) was the key root–zone soil moisture that could influence NDVI, whereas soil moisture at depths of 0.4 to 1.0 m and the HLL area were closely related and had similar responses to climatic change. Pericyclic reactions are powerful transformations for the construction of carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds in organic synthesis. Their role in biosynthesis is increasingly apparent, and mechanisms by which pericyclases can catalyse reactions are of major interest1. [4+2] cycloadditions (Diels–Alder reactions) have been widely used in organic synthesis2 for the formation of six-membered rings and are now well-established in biosynthesis3–6. [6+4] and other 'higher-order' cycloadditions were predicted7 in 1965, and are now increasingly common in the laboratory despite challenges arising from the generation of a highly strained ten-membered ring system8,9. However, although enzyme-catalysed [6+4] cycloadditions have been proposed10–12, they have not been proven to occur. Here we demonstrate a group of enzymes that catalyse a pericyclic [6+4] cycloaddition, which is a crucial step in the biosynthesis of streptoseomycin-type natural products. This type of pericyclase catalyses [6+4] and [4+2] cycloadditions through a single ambimodal transition state, which is consistent with previous proposals11,12. The [6+4] product is transformed to a less stable [4+2] adduct via a facile Cope rearrangement, and the [4+2] adduct is converted into the natural product enzymatically. Crystal structures of three pericyclases, computational simulations of potential energies and molecular dynamics, and site-directed mutagenesis establish the mechanism of this transformation. This work shows how enzymes are able to catalyse concerted pericyclic reactions involving ambimodal transition states. Enzymatic catalysis of pericyclic [6+4] cycloaddition reactions to form ten-membered rings is observed during biosynthesis of the macrocyclic antibiotic streptoseomycin, and the mechanism of these transformations is established. Background: Chaetominine (CHA) is a novel alkaloid with excellent medicinal activities produced by Aspergillus fumigatus CY018. However, its further application has been severely restricted by the low production yield. In this work, the fermentation titer of CHA was investigated by medium composition optimization and amino-acid addition strategies. Results: Under the optimized conditions of sucrose 115.03 g/L, ammonium acetate 3.98 g/L, d-tryptophan 3.84 g/L, KHPO 1.5 g/L, FeSO·7HO 0.02 g/L, MgSO·7HO 0.7 g/L, sodium glutamate 3 g/L, sodium tartrate 1.5 g/L, and CaCl 0.045 g/L), a CHA production yield of 55.92 mg/L was obtained, which increased significantly (3.99-fold) as compared with the unoptimized basal medium. Scale-up fermentation was carried out in a 5-L bioreactor based on the shake-flask fermentation results, maximum CHA yield of 48.53 mg/L was obtained at an air flow rate of 2.0 ± 0.1 VVM and an agitation rate of 400 rpm. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that medium composition optimization and amino-acid addition were useful strategies for improving CHA production via biotechnological process.
