Engineering atom-scale sites are crucial to the mitigation of polysulfide shuttle, promotion of sulfur redox, and regulation of lithium deposition in lithium–sulfur batteries. Herein, a homonuclear copper dual-atom catalyst with a proximal distance of 3.5 Å is developed for lithium–sulfur batteries, wherein two adjacent copper atoms are linked by a pair of symmetrical chlorine bridge bonds. Benefiting from the proximal copper atoms and their unique coordination, the copper dual-atom catalyst with the increased active interface concentration synchronously guide the evolutions of sulfur and lithium species. Such a delicate design breaks through the activity limitation of mononuclear metal center and represents a catalyst concept for lithium–sulfur battery realm. Therefore, a remarkable areal capacity of 7.8 mA h cm−2 is achieved under the scenario of sulfur content of 60 wt.%, mass loading of 7.7 mg cm−2 and electrolyte dosage of 4.8 μL mg−1. Highlights: A unique atomic dispersed hetero-pair was successfully synthesized, consisting of Mo-Fe di-atoms anchored on N-doped carbon carrier. This strategy breaks the linear scaling relationships of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction by simultaneously regulating the *COOH adsorption energy and *CO desorption energy. The as-prepared MoFe–N–C exhibits excellent performance for CO2RR to CO with a high turnover frequency (TOF) of 3336.21 h−1, CO Faradaic efficiency (FECO) of 95.96% at − 0.60 V (versus RHE) and outstanding stability. Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) involves a variety of intermediates with highly correlated reaction and ad-desorption energies, hindering optimization of the catalytic activity. For example, increasing the binding of the *COOH to the active site will generally increase the *CO desorption energy. Breaking this relationship may be expected to dramatically improve the intrinsic activity of CO2RR, but remains an unsolved challenge. Herein, we addressed this conundrum by constructing a unique atomic dispersed hetero-pair consisting of Mo-Fe di-atoms anchored on N-doped carbon carrier. This system shows an unprecedented CO2RR intrinsic activity with TOF of 3336 h−1, high selectivity toward CO production, Faradaic efficiency of 95.96% at − 0.60 V and excellent stability. Theoretical calculations show that the Mo-Fe diatomic sites increased the *COOH intermediate adsorption energy by bridging adsorption of *COOH intermediates. At the same time, d-d orbital coupling in the Mo-Fe di-atom results in electron delocalization and facilitates desorption of *CO intermediates. Thus, the undesirable correlation between these steps is broken. This work provides a promising approach, specifically the use of di-atoms, for breaking unfavorable relationships based on understanding of the catalytic mechanisms at the atomic scale. Grain boundary engineering is a versatile tool for strengthening materials by tuning the composition and bonding structure at the interface of neighboring crystallites, and this method holds special significance for materials composed of small nanograins where the ultimate strength is dominated by grain boundary instead of dislocation motion. Here, we report a large strengthening of a nanocolumnar copper film that comprises columnar nanograins embedded in a bamboo-like boron framework synthesized by magnetron sputtering co-deposition, reaching the high nanoindentation hardness of 10.8 GPa among copper alloys. The boron framework surrounding copper nanograins stabilizes and strengthens the nanocolumnar copper film under indentation, benefiting from the high strength of the amorphous boron framework and the constrained deformation of copper nanocolumns confined by the boron grain boundary. These findings open a new avenue for strengthening metals via construction of dual-phase nanocomposites comprising metal nanograins embedded in a strong and confining light-element grain boundary framework. Highlights: All the synthesis routes and surfaced-modified strategy of MXene-derived quantum dots (MQDs), the synthesis of MQDs-based nanocomposites, and advanced characterization techniques of MQDs are fully covered. Catalytic application is classified and discussed by judging the roles of MQDs. Current challenge and prospect are proposed for promoting the development and catalytic application of MQDs.It is well known that two-dimensional (2D) MXene-derived quantum dots (MQDs) inherit the excellent physicochemical properties of the parental MXenes, as a Chinese proverb says, “Indigo blue is extracted from the indigo plant, but is bluer than the plant it comes from.” Therefore, 0D QDs harvest larger surface-to-volume ratio, outstanding optical properties, and vigorous quantum confinement effect. Currently, MQDs trigger enormous research enthusiasm as an emerging star of functional materials applied to physics, chemistry, biology, energy conversion, and storage. Since the surface properties of small-sized MQDs include the type of surface functional groups, the functionalized surface directly determines their performance. As the Nobel Laureate Wolfgang Pauli says, “God made the bulk, but the surface was invented by the devil,” and it is just on the basis of the abundant surface functional groups, there is lots of space to be thereof excavated from MQDs. We are witnessing such excellence and even more promising to be expected. Nowadays, MQDs have been widely applied to catalysis, whereas the related reviews are rarely reported. Herein, we provide a state-of-the-art overview of MQDs in catalysis over the past five years, ranging from the origin and development of MQDs, synthetic routes of MQDs, and functionalized MQDs to advanced characterization techniques. To explore the diversity of catalytic application and perspectives of MQDs, our review will stimulate more efforts toward the synthesis of optimal MQDs and thereof designing high-performance MQDs-based catalysts. The oriented two-dimensional porous nitrogen-doped carbon embedded with CoS2 and MoS2 nanosheets is a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. The hierarchical structure ensures fast mass transfer capacity in improving the electrocatalytic activity. And the greatly increased specific surface area is beneficial to expose more electrocatalytically active atoms. For oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) tests in 1 mol/L KOH solution, only 194 and 140 mV overpotential are required to achieve a current density of 10 mA/cm2, respectively. Quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskites such as BA2Csn–1PbnBr3n+1 (BA = butylammonium, n > 1) are promising emitters, but their electroluminescence performance is limited by a severe non-radiative recombination during the energy transfer process. Here, we make use of methanesulfonate (MeS) that can interact with the spacer BA cations via strong hydrogen bonding interaction to reconstruct the quasi-2D perovskite structure, which increases the energy acceptor-to-donor ratio and enhances the energy transfer in perovskite films, thus improving the light emission efficiency. MeS additives also lower the defect density in RP perovskites, which is due to the elimination of uncoordinated Pb2+ by the electron-rich Lewis base MeS and the weakened adsorbate blocking effect. As a result, green light-emitting diodes fabricated using these quasi-2D RP perovskite films reach current efficiency of 63 cd A−1 and 20.5% external quantum efficiency, which are the best reported performance for devices based on quasi-2D perovskites so far. Owing to large exciton binding energy, quasi-2D perovskite is promising for light-emitting application, yet inhomogeneous phases distribution limits the potential. Boron carbide (B4C) coating on diamond particle is synthesized by heating diamond particles in a powder mix of H3BO3 and B in Ar atmosphere. The composition, bond state and coverage fraction of boron carbide coating on diamond particles are investigated. The boron carbide coating favors to grow on diamond (100) surface rather than on diamond (111) surface. Cu matrix composites reinforced with B4C-coated diamond particles were made by powder metallurgy. The addition of B4C coating gave rise to a dense composite. The influence of B4C coating on both tensile strength and thermal conductivity of the composite were investigated. When the B4C fully covered on diamond particles, the composite exhibited a greatly increase in tensile strength (115 MPa) which was much higher than that for uncoated-diamond/Cu (60 MPa) composites. Meanwhile, a high thermal conductivity of 687 W/mK was achieved in the B4C-coated-diamond/Cu composites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Batteries are key components in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. To estimate a battery's state of charge, monitor its state of health, and formulate a balanced strategy, a battery model that requires a shorter and less costly study period than a real battery is established. This paper aims to describe a single-particle model of a lithium-ion battery that has a simple structure, can be embedded in simulation software for online applications, and provides a high-accuracy characterization of the dynamics. The single-particle model, which is described by a set of partial differential equations, is a simplified electrochemical model that characterizes the dynamic voltage response. A procedure for reducing the model based on the three-parameter polynomial approximation and the volume-average integration method is proposed to simplify the partial differential equations of the single-particle model. Identifying the parameters in the battery model is the key problem. The convergent bacterial foraging optimization algorithm with a short computation time is adopted for identifying the electrochemical parameters, including the active surface areas of the electrodes, the diffusion coefficients of the lithium ions in the solid phase, and the reaction rate constants. Then, the single-particle model of a lithium-ion battery is set up in MATLAB and Simulink. Finally, the precision of the single-particle model is verified by comparing the terminal voltages of the battery and the model. The results show that the single-particle model of a lithium-ion battery is very accurate and simple, thus verifying the reliability of the parameter identification process. A boron carbide coating was applied to diamond particles by heating the particles in a powder mixture consisting of H3BO3, B and Mg. The composition, bond state and coverage fraction of the boron carbide coating on the diamond particles were investigated. The boron carbide coating prefers to grow on the diamond (100) surface than on the diamond (111) surface. A stoichiometric B4C coating completely covered the diamond particle after maintaining the raw mixture at 1200 °C for 2 h. The contribution of the boron carbide coating to the oxidation resistance enhancement of the diamond particles was investigated. During annealing of the coated diamond in air, the priory formed B2O3, which exhibits a self-healing property, as an oxygen barrier layer, which protected the diamond from oxidation. The formation temperature of B2O3 is dependent on the amorphous boron carbide content. The coating on the diamond provided effective protection of the diamond against oxidation by heating in air at 1000 °C for 1 h. Furthermore, the presence of the boron carbide coating also contributed to the maintenance of the static compressive strength during the annealing of diamond in air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphitic mesoporous carbon materials with different structure were synthesized by reversed replication method. SBA-15 was used as hard template and the synthesized aromatic polymers with different polymerization degree as the carbon sources. Adopting the impregnation method, the carbon source was assembled into the pore of the SBA-15. The silica/aromatic polymers system was carbonized under N atmosphere (high polymerization degree aromatic polymers) and vacuum (low polymerization degree aromatic polymers) to produce the graphitic mesoporous carbon materials with structure of CMK-3 and CMK-5, respectively. It is a easy way to synthesize the graphitic mesoporous carbon materials, especial for the CMK-5 structure. The porous structure and composition of these carbon materials were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Raman spectrometry, and N adsorption-desorption measurements. Large-area single- or multilayer graphene of high quality is synthesized on Ni films by radio-frequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) at a relatively low temperature (650°C). In the deposition process, a trace amount of CH gas (2-8 sccm (sccm denotes standard cubic centimeter per minute at STP)) is introduced into the PECVD chamber and only a short deposition time (30-60 s) is used. Single- or multilayer graphene is obtained because carbon atoms from the discharging CH diffuse into the Ni film and then segregate out at its surface. The layer number of the obtained graphene increases when the deposition time or CH gas flow rate is increased. This investigation shows that PECVD is a simple, low-cost, and effective technique to synthesize large-area single- or multilayer graphene, which has potential for application as electronic devices. The graphene/carbon nanotube hybrid was designed and implemented by a deoxygenation process for direct electron transfer of glucose oxidase and glucose biosensor. The procedure was analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectra, etc. The strategy of structurally engineering one-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) and two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) presented three benefits: (a) a deoxygenation process between GO and acid-CNT was introduced under strongly alkaline condition; (b) GO prevented the irreversible integration of CNT; and (c) CNT hindered the restacking of GO. The RGO interacted with CNT through the van der Waals forces and π-π stacking interaction. The three-dimensional hybrid not only had a high surface area, but also exhibited a good electronic conductivity. A direct electrochemistry of glucose oxidase was obtained on the nanohybrid modified electrode which showed good response for glucose sensing. This study would provide a facile and green method for the preparation of nanohybrid for a wide range of applications including biosensing, super capacitor, and transparent electrode. Nanostructured carbon materials have attracted enormous attention in last two decades due to their unique chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. In this work, amorphous hollow carbon spheres (AHCSs) with diameters in the range of 100-750 nm, which are dispersed among bent graphitized carbon nanotubes, are synthesized by using radio frequency plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition in mixed CH/H gases. The carbon spheres were characterized with scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. It is found that MgO and Co/Ni nanoparticles as well as hydrogen play crucial roles in the formation of AHCSs. Moreover, a possible growth mechanism of AHCSs was proposed. The grand challenge in the development of atomically dispersed metallic catalysts is their low metal-atom loading density, uncontrollable localization and ambiguous interactions with supports, posing difficulty in maximizing their catalytic performance. Here, we achieve an interface catalyst consisting of atomic cobalt array covalently bound to distorted 1T MoS2 nanosheets (SA Co-D 1T MoS2). The phase of MoS2 transforming from 2H to D-1T, induced by strain from lattice mismatch and formation of Co-S covalent bond between Co and MoS2 during the assembly, is found to be essential to form the highly active single-atom array catalyst. SA Co-D 1T MoS2 achieves Pt-like activity toward HER and high long-term stability. Active-site blocking experiment together with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the superior catalytic behaviour is associated with an ensemble effect via the synergy of Co adatom and S of the D-1T MoS2 support by tuning hydrogen binding mode at the interface. While single-atom catalysis offers an efficient materials usage, the ambiguous interactions with supports poses a difficulty in understanding catalytic performances. Moiré superlattices (MSLs) are modulated structures produced from homogeneous or heterogeneous 2D layers stacked with a twist angle and/or lattice mismatch. Expanding the range of available materials, methods for fabricating MSL, and realization of unique emergent properties are key challenges. Here we report a facile bottom-up synthesis of homogeneous MSL based on a wide-gap 2D semiconductor, BiOCl, using a one-pot solvothermal approach with robust reproducibility. Unlike previous MSLs usually prepared by directly stacking two monolayers, our BiOCl MSLs are realized in a scalable, direct way through chemical growth of spiral-type nanosheets driven by screw-dislocations. We find emergent properties including large band gap reduction (∼0.6 eV), two-fold increase in carrier lifetime, and strongly enhanced photocatalytic activity. First-principles calculations reveal that such unusual properties can be ascribed to the locally enhanced inter-layer coupling associated with the Moiré potential modulation. Our results demonstrate the promise of MSL materials for chemical and physical functions. Quantum efficiencies of organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskite light-emitting devices (LEDs) have increased significantly, but poor device operational stability still impedes their further development and application. All-inorganic perovskites show better stability than the hybrid counterparts, but the performance of their respective films used in LEDs is limited by the large perovskite grain sizes, which lowers the radiative recombination probability and results in grain boundary related trap states. We realize smooth and pinhole-free, small-grained inorganic perovskite films with improved photoluminescence quantum yield by introducing trifluoroacetate anions to effectively passivate surface defects and control the crystal growth. As a result, efficient green LEDs based on inorganic perovskite films achieve a high current efficiency of 32.0 cd A−1 corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 10.5%. More importantly, our all-inorganic perovskite LEDs demonstrate a record operational lifetime, with a half-lifetime of over 250 h at an initial luminance of 100 cd m−2. All-inorganic cesium lead bromide perovskite based light-emitting diodes show improved operational stability but the film quality limits their performance. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for batteries and supercapacitors. However, random crystal orientations and low conductivity can result in poor performance. Designing a convenient method to address these issues is therefore an important challenge. Here we describe an efficient strategy to fabricate self-supported MOF wall-like architectures with uniform orientation on carbon nanowalls (CNWs) as seedbeds. In addition, we gain molecular-level insight into the interface between CNWs and MOF nanosheets using density functional theory calculations. Our results suggest that assembled ions anchor on edge carbon atoms to match the matrix of the edges of CNWs, while the remaining ions self-assemble with terminal –COOH groups on p-benzenedicarboxylic acid ligands to form the structure. Our findings demonstrate a feasible method to fabricate integrated MOF electrodes with ideal orientations and, therefore, may pave the way to unlock the inherent high performance of MOF materials towards a number of engineering applications. Cobalt hydroxide is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors due to the high capacitance and long cyclability. However, the energy storage/conversion mechanism of cobalt hydroxide is still vague at the atomic level. Here we shed light on how cobalt hydroxide functions as a supercapacitor electrode at operando conditions. We find that the high specific capacitance and long cycling life of cobalt hydroxide involve a complete modification of the electrode morphology, which is usually believed to be unfavourable but in fact has little influence on the performance. The conversion during the charge/discharge process is free of any massive structural evolution, but with some tiny shuffling or adjustments of atom/ion species. The results not only unravel that the potential of supercapacitors could heavily rely on the underlying structural similarities of switching phases but also pave the way for future material design for supercapacitors, batteries and hybrid devices. Regelation, i.e., ice melts under compression and freezes again when the pressure is relieved, remains puzzling since its discovery in 1850's by Faraday. Here we show that hydrogen bond (O:H-O) cooperativity and its extraordinary recoverability resolve this anomaly. The H-O bond and the O:H nonbond possesses each a specific heat ηx(T/ΘDx) whose Debye temperature ΘDx is proportional to its characteristic phonon frequency ωx according to Einstein's relationship. A superposition of the ηx(T/ΘDx) curves for the H-O bond (x = H, ωH ~ 3200 cm−1) and the O:H nonbond (x = L, ωL ~ 200 cm−1, ΘDL = 198 K) yields two intersecting temperatures that define the liquid/quasisolid/solid phase boundaries. Compression shortens the O:H nonbond and stiffens its phonon but does the opposite to the H-O bond through O-O Coulomb repulsion, which closes up the intersection temperatures and hence depress the melting temperature of quasisolid ice. Reproduction of the Tm(P) profile clarifies that the H-O bond energy EH determines the Tm with derivative of EH = 3.97 eV for bulk water and ice. Oxygen atom always finds bonding partners to retain its sp3-orbital hybridization once the O:H breaks, which ensures O:H-O bond recoverability to its original state once the pressure is relieved. The interplay of superconductivity and magnetism is a subject of ongoing interest, stimulated most recently by the discovery of Fe-based superconductivity and the recognition that spin-fluctuations near a magnetic quantum critical point may provide an explanation for the superconductivity and the order parameter. Here we investigate magnetism in the Na filled Fe-based skutterudites using first principles calculations. NaFe4Sb12 is a known ferromagnet near a quantum critical point. We find a ferromagnetic metallic state for this compound driven by a Stoner type instability, consistent with prior work. In accord with prior work, the magnetization is overestimated, as expected for a material near an itinerant ferromagnetic quantum critical point. NaFe4P12 also shows a ferromagnetic instability at the density functional level, but this instability is much weaker than that of NaFe4Sb12, possibly placing it on the paramagnetic side of the quantum critical point. NaFe4As12 shows intermediate behavior. We also present results for skutterudite FeSb3, which is a metastable phase that has been reported in thin film form. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fundamental challenge in designing durable infrared-reflective coatings is achieving the ideal combination of both high reflectivity and durability. Satisfying these competing demands is traditionally achieved by deposition of durable layers on highly reflective metals. We overturn the traditional logic of 'first reflectivity and then durability' and propose an alternative of 'first durability and then reflectivity': First, a transition-metal compound is selected as a durable base; then its reflectivity is improved by incorporating silver/gold to form an alloy or by overcoating a multilayer stack. Two validation experiments prove that the new strategy works extremely well: the coatings thus obtained have infrared reflectivities close to that of aluminum, and their hardness and acid and salt corrosion resistances are 27-50, 400-1 500 and 7 500-25 000 times that of aluminum. The traditional mirror coating (e.g., Al/SiO 2 films) is more suitable for moderate environments, while our mirror coating that was obtained by the new strategy (e.g., an Ag-doped hafnium nitride film) is more suitable for harsh environments, such as ones with dust, windblown sand, moisture, acid rain or salt fog.
