Gender stereotyping has long been an issue for gender and language research from as early as the 1970s, and analyses on gender representation in English language textbooks have been frequently conducted. However, gender representation in assessment papers, another commonly occurring genre in education, remains unexplored in Hong Kong research. Therefore, this paper was aimed to explore how males and females are represented in Territory-wide System Assessment (TSA), a territory-level assessment administered in Hong Kong, to find out if gender stereotyping is still an issue. The data of the current study include the recent 10 years of TSA Primary 3 English Language Reading & Writing papers. A total of 33 sets of TSA Primary 3 English Language Reading & Writing papers was analysed by using content and linguistic analyses for their written texts and visual analysis for visual elements. The key findings include: males and females are represented similarly in the written texts and in the visuals, and females are portrayed as involving in occupational roles more frequently than males in both the written texts and visuals. However, it is always females who were drawn to be focused on family matters, and the marital status of a female is still distinguished by the use of either Miss or Mrs. Suggestions for test paper designers and examination authorities are given and implications for future research studies are drawn at the end of this paper. How did Chinese leaders Deng Xiaoping and Zhao Ziyang feel about Hong Kong? The existing literature has tended to see the Sino-British negotiations over the future of Hong Kong through the economic lens favoured by the British side and described the Chinese side as primarily motivated by nationalism. However, 'nationalism' remains a vague concept in need of further definition. This paper focuses on the Chinese side of the negotiation table. It unpacks what 'nationalism' meant to Deng and Zhao within the context of the negotiations by examining three interrelated components: history, identity and emotion. This paper then analyses how the Chinese side used history, identity and emotion strategically during the negotiations, focusing on the September 1982 leaders' meetings as a case study. Adopting a constructivist lens, this paper examines historical documents against frameworks and theories from the social sciences, producing an interdisciplinary analysis of Chinese negotiation tactics. It unravels how China's leaders used the country's past to broadcast the Party's stance to the people, bolster their leadership position and win the advantage over Britain in the Hong Kong negotiations. A considerable body of work now exists on the role that identity plays in understanding teachers and teaching. Developing and sustaining teacher identities in higher education can, however, be challenging given the subordinate positioning of teaching in some educational contexts. Despite the growth of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programmes in many parts of the world, recent research suggests that EAP practitioners are especially vulnerable to being assigned marginalized identities within the academy. Therefore, this paper reports the results of a study which used a short story approach to investigate the tensions and triumphs one EAP practitioner in Hong Kong experienced in constructing her language teacher identities (LTIs). Findings suggest that her identity tensions and struggles take place across space and time and play out at different scales, including classrooms, educational institutions, and within broader societal discourses. However, the short stories presented in this paper speak not only of tension and struggle, but also of determination and resilience to construct LTIs in the academy. Consequently, the results of this study can help to raise awareness amongst stakeholders, including policy makers, leaders of higher education institutions, and language teaching practitioners, of how they can support and sustain the construction of LTIs within the academy. Collecting feedback from students through course, program and other evaluation questionnaires has become a costly and time consuming process for most colleges. Converting to data collection through the internet, rather than completion on paper, can result in a cheaper and more efficient process. This article examines several research questions which need to be answered to establish that results collected by the two modes of administration are equivalent. Data were gathered for a program evaluation questionnaire from undergraduate students at a university in Hong Kong. Students were able to choose between completion on paper or through the internet. In six of the seven Faculties the number of responses through each mode was roughly the same. Students in the Engineering Faculty favored the internet. Scores on the 14 out of 18 scales in the instrument showed small differences by mode of response, which became smaller still with controls for pertinent demographic variables. The main response question addressed in the study was whether there was any difference in the way respondents to the two modes interpreted the questions. The study demonstrated the equivalence of the two data sets by showing that both could be fitted to a common model with structural equation modeling (SEM). Five levels of tests of invariance further confirmed the comparability of data by mode of administration. In the countryside, where intensive rural development and rising property values have been observed since the late 1970s, the preservation and meaning of traditional dwellings have emerged as crucial considerations in shaping Hong Kong's countryside conservation policy. The focus of this paper is on the conservation of temples, as we are drawn to these structures not only for their architectural merit but also for their role as public buildings within the countryside. Consequently, their cultural significance is heavily influenced by the stakeholders they are associated with, distinguishing them from other types of dwellings. This paper examines the coastal landscape of South Lantau, which includes several villages with distinct traditions that have undergone significant transformations since the 1960s. Located at the southwest edge of Hong Kong, Lantau Island had a rural lifestyle that was relatively undisturbed before WWII because of the difficulty in accessing the island. However, in response to the large people influx from China's mainland after 1949, the Hong Kong government introduced the Lantau Development Plan in 1953, mainly to open up new sources of freshwater resources for Hong Kong Island. The construction of South Lantau Road in 1955 and Shek Pik Reservoir in 1957 gradually led to the decline of agricultural activities in South Lantau and the population exodus of local villagers, resulting in a rupture to regional traditions. In multilineage communities such as the villages on South Lantau, worship of a common deity provides a vital source of social bonding, particularly for an area long beset by typhoons, piracy and banditry. Local people pray for safety and prosperity through collective rituals and celebratory activities. Therefore, temples are not only religious establishments but also embody the sense of social solidarity among villagers on South Lantau. Through the case study of three rural villages on South Lantau, this paper examines how temples play an important role in the continuity of the communal network amid repercussions from the postwar disruption of traditional rural life. Significantly, this pilot study also draws attention to the functions of temples in their historical context. It emphasises the importance of recognising and re-evaluating these buildings for cultural enhancement as part of community engagement. Rapid urbanization has resulted in the substantial population growth in metropolitan areas. However, existing research on population change of the cities predominantly draws on grid statistical data at the administrative level, overlooking the intra-urban variegation of population change. Particularly, there is a lack of attention given to the spatio-temporal change of population across different urban forms and functions. This paper therefore fills in the lacuna by clarifying the spatio-temporal characteristics of population growth in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 2000 to 2020 through the methods of local climate zone (LCZ) scheme and urban–rural gradients. The results showed that: (1) High population density was observed in the compact high-rise (LCZ 1) areas, with a noticeable decline along urban–rural gradients. (2) The city centers of GBA experienced the most significant population growth, while certain urban fringes and rural areas witnessed significant population shrinkage. (3) The rate of growth tended to slow down after 2010, but the uneven development of population-based urbanization was also noticeable, as urbanization and industrialization varied across different LCZ types and cities in GBA. This paper contributes to the ongoing debate on the nature and characteristics of the volatility transmission channels of major crash events in international stock markets between 03 July 1997 and 09 March 2021. Using dynamic conditional correlations (DCC) for conditional correlations and volatility clustering, GARCH-BEKK for the direction of transmission of disturbances, and the Diebold-Yilmaz spillover index for the level of volatility contagion, the paper finds that the climbs in external shock transmissions have long-lasting impacts in domestic markets due to the contagion effect during crisis periods. The findings also reveal that the heavier magnitude of financial stress is transmitted between Asian countries via the Hong Kong stock market. Additionally, the degree of volatility spillovers between advanced and emerging equity markets is smaller compared to the pure spillovers between advanced markets or emerging markets, offering a window of opportunity for international market participants in terms of portfolio diversification and risk management applications. Furthermore, the study introduces a novel early warning system created by integrating DCC correlations with a state-of-the-art deep learning model to predict the global financial crisis and COVID-19 crisis. The experimental analysis of long short-term memory network finds evidence of contagion risk by verifying bursts in volatility spillovers and generating signals with high accuracy before the 12-month crisis period. This provides supplementary information that contributes to the decision-making process of practitioners, as well as offering indicative evidence that facilitates the assessment of market vulnerability for policymakers. Qianhai—an innovation park in Shenzhen—has the possibility of boosting innovation in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and in the wider region. This paper reviews the existing evidence about which policies have promoted profitable innovation in the Qianhai region (Hong Kong and Shenzhen) in the past. We also point to the importance of profitable innovation—rather than just innovation for its own sake. Profits attract and keep firms in an international financial centre. Yet, until we know exactly how much profitability these innovative firms require and how to promote such profitability, the advice given in the literature to Qianhai's and other policymakers will remain woefully inadequate. Large-scale assessment of window views is demanded for precise housing valuation and quantified evidence for improving the built environment, especially in high-rise, high-density cities. However, the absence of a semantic segmentation dataset of window views forbids an accurate pixel-level assessment. This paper presents a City Information Model (CIM)-generated Window View (CIM-WV) dataset comprising 2,000 annotated images collected in the high-rise, high-density urban areas of Hong Kong. The CIM-WV includes seven semantic labels, i.e., building, sky, vegetation, road, waterbody, vehicle, and terrain. Experimental results of training a well-known deep learning (DL) model, DeepLab V3+ , on CIM-WV, achieved a high performance (per-class Intersection over Union (IoU) ≥ 86.23%) on segmenting major landscape elements, i.e., building, sky, vegetation, and waterbody, and consistently outperformed the transfer learning on a popular real-world street view dataset, Cityscapes. The DeepLab V3+ model trained on CIM-WV was robust (mIoU ≥ 72.09%) in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula, and enhanced the semantic segmentation accuracy of real-world and Google Earth CIM-generated window view images. The contribution of this paper is three-fold. CIM-WV is the first public CIM-generated photorealistic window view dataset with rich semantics. Secondly, comparative analysis shows a more accurate window view assessment using DL from CIM-WV than deep transfer learning from ground-level views. Last, for urban researchers and practitioners, our publicly accessible DL models trained on CIM-WV enable novel multi-source window view-based urban applications including precise real estate valuation, improvement of built environment, and window view-related urban analytics. Chinese cultural conservatism used to participate in shaping the course of modernization to a large extent. In this paper, I aim to describe a hidden lineage of Chinese cultural conservatism of the twentieth century that is still alive and appears to be more and more influential in mainland China. Relying on several ideas developed by Neo-Confucians of the early twentieth century, Gan Yang's paper in 2007 represented a contemporary revival of Chinese cultural conservatism. More importantly, in recent years, this kind of revival of conservative discourse went through another big change, which not only matters to the self-underpinning of the legitimate basis of the current regime, but also combined with the political conservations related to the Hong Kong protest of 2019–2020 explains why this country is so ideologically different from the West. The Greater Bay Area (GBA) is to become a major innovation and technology hub of global impact. Such a transformation is to take place in the midst of a policy-driven economy in GBA's Mainland region and a market-driven economy in Hong Kong and Macau. In this paper, we examine the uniqueness and complexities of logistics and trade facilitation in GBA. This study establishes a discourse in GBA's logistics and trade facilitation between government and non-government stakeholders. Based on the discourse, we provide a conceptual context on the unique aspects of GBA, pinpointing critical issues such as the coexistence of differing institutional systems and interplay between state planning and market economy. A major objective of the paper is to identify and conceptualize unique logistics and trade features of GBA development, and to highlight opportunities for academic and policy research. This special issue sets out to revisit major bilingual and multilingual education policy and planning issues in key cities across the dynamic Greater Bay Area (GBA) of China (including Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau), as informed by the emerging insights from translanguaging theory (Li in Appl Linguist 39(1):9–30, 2018). Specifically, contributions are invited from the GBA and beyond to trace the milestone developments of relevant language policy and planning (LPP) initiatives featuring governmental policies on the language of instruction (e.g., English as Medium of Instruction, Chinese as Medium of Instruction) and the daily use of multiple linguistic resources or repertoires (e.g., language learner's L1 or mother tongue) in foreign/second language classrooms and/or in content-based classroom instruction. As such, major papers in the special issue not only set out to provide historical and analytical reviews of these related LPP issues across Hong Kong, Macau, and Guangdong Province but also reflect upon the language use and behaviors of the residents, showcasing their identity and attitudes and ideological stance toward the multiple languages that are being taught or used in daily life. Toward the end, we outline our research agendas for future endeavors in broader domains in the GBA and beyond through the translanguaging analytical tools. Overall, our position is that the GBA presents itself as an evolving, complex, and superdiverse zone of "Translanguaging Spaces" within which key LPP issues may need to be reconceptualized and implemented in such a way so as to fully reflect the dynamic and fluid multilingual, multicultural, and multisemiotic lived reality of the residents in this megapolis region. This paper focuses on the character of multi-level pedestrian accessibility and walkability within the public and quasi-public realm in Hong Kong, using the particular case of the redevelopment of Taikoo Place in Quarry Bay. In an era when the value of public space as a space for public activity and debate is coming under increasing scrutiny, both in Hong Kong and internationally, this paper explores multi-level interior and exterior public and quasi-public realm, as a hybrid form of interior open and transit space in a commercial setting that has becomes a central part of the city's planning, designed to both serve and profit from the high level of pedestrian traffic. This paper draws on empirical research of pedestrian behaviour patterns to interrogate the value and significance of linked-spaces within commercial districts, both to the users and the real estate travelled through, using the city of Hong Kong as a reference and the specific case of Taikoo Place. The paper introduces an approach that facilitates whole-class curriculum co-creation and presents a case study conducted in a higher education institution in Hong Kong where it was implemented. The approach enables students to actively contribute to constructing a curriculum in partnership with teachers and practitioners, using scenario development techniques within the technology-enhanced learning environments. In this sense, the study is compatible with and contributes to contemporary higher education requirements for future-ready students, able to work in fast-changing, digitalized and globalized working environments. The case study describes the implementation of the approach in undergraduate and postgraduate knowledge management courses. The mix-method design was employed, including content analysis of scenarios, a questionnaire asking for students' feedback, and teacher's observations. The findings revealed that the approach enabled students and the teacher to work more collaboratively and co-create some aspects of the knowledge management courses (e.g., identifying and compiling relevant subject trends), even if some challenges were experienced. The paper points to the need for students' ownership when it comes to developing curricula that better consider students' experiences and meaning-making processes. The paper contributes to contemporary higher education discourse by providing conceptual and practical guidance on how to enact whole-class curriculum co-creation for teachers interested in such practice. This paper discusses the cocreation of an emergent place-identity in a Hakka household in the Hong Kong countryside triggered by architectural restoration. Located in Kuk Po, a quintessential Hakka village that was established over 300 years ago, Yeung House was restored by the research team under a government-funded initiative to regenerate architectural values. Rebuilt in 1967, Yeung House has experienced decay and evolution over the years. It signifies the adaptive lifestyle of Hakka immigrants through its adapted siting, hybrid tectonics and modernised features. After restoration, Yeung House was repurposed into a base for education and research managed by the three house-owning villagers. Different activities were initiated by the villagers and coarranged by the research team. As a serendipitous outcome, the front yard of Yeung House has been activated into a multifunctional communal space. Subsequently, it is argued that a place-identity has emerged in Ng To and is influenced by the distinctiveness of the restored Yeung House and the continuity of the front yard. New meanings of the place have been created by the villagers through the practice of a potential, alternative lifestyle in the rural-urban parallel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The existing literature primarily examined the impact of unexpected events on the stock market at a single scale, posing the challenge of a lack of multiscale analysis. This paper investigates the impact of COVID-19 on stock markets (China, the U.S., and Hong Kong) from a multiscale perspective using an improved ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD)-based event analysis method. First, the stock price series is decomposed into several independent intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residue. Second, a novel composition method is proposed to reconstruct the IMFs into three components: high-frequency, low-frequency, and long-term trend. We find that the composition of low-frequency and long-term trend components is dominant, which is used to estimate the strength of COVID-19 impact on the stock markets. In addition, the outbreak of COVID-19 significantly increased the intensity of short-term fluctuations in stock prices. Finally, the high-frequency component is analyzed to capture the volatility spillover effects among the three stock markets by the BEKK(Baba-Engle-Kraft-Kroner)-GARCH model. The results show that before the outbreak, there are two-way volatility spillovers between any two of the three markets. After the outbreak, there is no spillover effect between China and Hong Kong, and Hong Kong has no spillover effect on the U.S. However, volatility in the U.S. market still has a significant spillover effect on the other two markets, implying that a mature market can absorb new information more quickly. This paper reports an intervention study in the teaching of fraction concepts at a village school in Hong Kong. The classes consisted of 60 Grade three students with different cultural backgrounds, including African, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Nepalese, and Pakistani. The study represents one of the relatively few studies that investigate the effectiveness of storytelling in teaching mathematics to ethnic minority (EM) students in the East Asian context. The quantitative analysis in a pre/post-test intervention/control group design shows reduction in achievement gap between EM students in rural settings and their Chinese peers in urban districts, including concepts such as part–whole interpretation, fraction language, and mathematics vocabulary. Analysis of classroom discourse based on the culturally responsive mathematics teaching (CRMT) framework reveals the multimodal features of storytelling provide greater access for EM students in acquiring language-related conceptualizations of fractions. Based on our analysis, we argue that mathematics teaching is inseparable from language teaching, which is often ignored or not planned explicitly in the lesson. Storytelling integrates language with mathematics content authentically and allows students to cope with the language demands in learning mathematics and to encounter the mathematics in real-world context. In the past three decades, fire engineering has experienced fast development worldwide. Fire regulations for building industry were moved from prescriptive description to performance-based specification. This trend started in the UK in the 1980s and spread to other western countries. Hong Kong closely followed the UK development and adopted the approach of performance-based design (PBD) for the Hong Kong International Airport and MTR stations in the early 1990s. The Government of Hong Kong SAR formally recognised the PBD approach in the prescriptive codes of practice in the mid-1990s and developed the performance-based code (PBC) in the 2000s. This PBC was promulgated in 2011. The evolution in fire engineering impacted the fire community in Mainland China. The State Key Laboratory of Fire Science (SKLFS) was established in University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in 1991. Then fire science and fire engineering stepped into the fast development track. The building industry in Mainland China started to adopt the PBD approach in the early 2000s for the significant developments including large airport terminals, railway and metro stations, super high-rise buildings, and mega commercial centres. However, a structured PBC system is not available within the regulatory framework to date. Adoption of PBD approach is slowing down in recent years. This paper presents a review of fire engineering development in Hong Kong and Mainland China. This paper applies Appadurai's notion of scapes in globalisation to study international student mobility. Thirty mainland Chinese students were interviewed; the majority of whom studied at prestigious institutions in the West before enrolling in their current PhD programmes at a research-intensive university in Hong Kong (HK) in the immediate aftermath of HK's large-scale social protests and amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. We seek to understand why these students relocated to HK to further their studies given these turbulent circumstances and how their mainlander identity and sojourns in the West influence their perceptions of HK's social movements from the perspectives of ethnoscape and ideoscape, respectively. Our findings reveal that HK represented the 'best' compromise for our participants, mitigating their nostalgia for home (i.e. mainland China) whilst offering a superior education to the Chinese mainland. Most participants perceived HK as a nationalistic ideoscape, wherein HK people's pursuit of autonomy is subordinated to the putative Chinese national interests. Moreover, ethnoscape and ideoscape dynamics were found to crisscross other scapes. Generous scholarships (i.e. financescape) provided additional incentives driving student relocations. The persistent consumption of Chinese social media (techno-mediascape) was found to have resulted in worldview conformity between our participants and the Chinese state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Let G be a finite group and H a subgroup of G. We say that H is pronormal in G if for every g ∈ G , the subgroups H and H g are conjugate in ⟨ H , H g ⟩ ; H is called weakly pronormal in G if there exists a subgroup K of G such that G = HK and H ∩ K is pronormal in G. In this paper, we investigate the structure of G under the assumption that certain subgroups of G are weakly pronormal in G. Our results improve and generalize new recent results in the literature. Landslides cause severe economic damage and a large number of casualties every year around the world. In many cases, it is not possible to avoid them, and the task of engineers and geologists is to mitigate their effects using measures such as building diverting structures or preparing escape roads to be used when an alarm is triggered. It is necessary, therefore, to predict the path of the landslide, its depth and velocity, and the runout. These objectives are usually are attained by using mathematical, numerical and rheological models. An important limitation of the analysis is the lack of data, specially when few laboratory tests are available, and in cases where their present important variations. This leads to performing sensitivity analyses in which analysts study the influence of several magnitudes of interest, such as friction angle, porosity, basal pore pressure and geometry of the sliding mass, just to mention a few, leading in turn to perform a large number of simulations. We propose in this paper a methodology to speed up the process, which is based on: (i) using depth integrated models, which provide a good combination of accuracy and computer effort and (ii) using artificial intelligence tools to reduce the number of simulations. Let us consider a case where we have N mag main variables to explore; for each of them we select a number of cases, which can differ from one magnitude to another. The number of cases will be where N cases (i) is the number of cases we have selected for magnitude i. We can consider these variables as nodes belonging to a hypercube of dimension N mag . We will refer from now on as "hypercube" to the set of all cases generated in this way. The paper presents two cases where these techniques will be applied: (i) a 1D dam break problem and (ii) a case of a real debris flow which happened in Hong Kong, for which there is available information. Cook et al. (Oper Res 61(3):666–676, 2013) propose a DEA-based model for the performance evaluation of non-homogeneous decision making units (DMUs) based on constant returns to scale (CRS), extended by Li et al. (Health Care Manag Sci 22(2):215–228, 2019) to variable returns to scale (VRS). This paper locates these models into more general DDF models to deal with nonhomogeneous DMUs and applies these to Hong Kong hospitals. The production process of each hospital is divided into subunits which have the same inputs and outputs and hospital performance is measured using the subunits. The paper provides CRS and VRS versions of DDF models and compares them with Cook et al. (Oper Res 61(3):666–676, 2013) and Li et al. (Health Care Manag Sci 22(2):215–228, 2019). A kernel-based method is used to estimate the distributions as well as a DEA-based efficiency analysis adapted by Simar and Zelenyuk to test the distributions. Both DDF CRS and VRS versions produce results similar to Cook et al. (Oper Res 61(3):666–676, 2013) and Li et al. (Health Care Manag Sci 22(2):215–228, 2019) respectively. However, the statistical tests find differences for the different technologies assumed as would be expected. For hospital managers, the more generalised DDF models expand their range of options in terms of directional improvements and priorities as well as dealing with non-homogeneity. The application of learning analytics (LA) to research and practice in higher education is expanding. Researchers and practitioners are using LA to provide an evidentiary basis across higher education to investigate student learning, to drive institutional quality improvement strategies, to determine at-risk behaviours and develop intervention strategies, to measure attrition more effectively and to improve curriculum design and evaluation in both on-campus and e-learning settings. This paper is a case study report of the novel application of LA to programme curriculum review from a major cross-institutional project in Hong Kong. The paper describes the rationale for the project, the conceptual model that led the approach and the development of a software tool that allowed the automation of statistical analyses specifically relevant to programme review. In addition, the paper addresses a major challenge that the project faced in relation to data governance. Estimating precipitation over large spatial areas remains a challenging problem for hydrologists. Satellite-based remote sensing rainfall products have the advantage of large-scale synchronous coverage, but the reliability of their inversion still needs to be improved. Correcting the bias of satellite-based precipitation estimates (SPEs) is a major challenge in applications such as environmental modeling, hydrology, and water resource management. In this paper, a new bias correction method—a Gaussian process regression (GPR) model method based on rain intensity classification—is proposed to improve the accuracy of a satellite precipitation product—the Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) Final Run (FR) product—at the daily scale in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. By comparing the effects of the proposed method with those of other existing classical correction methods, namely, quantile mapping (QM), the support vector machine (SVM) approach and direct GPR, it is found that all four methods improve the accuracy of the FR product to varying degrees. GPR based on rain intensity classification has the best effect of FR product improvement, with the CORR increasing from 0.55 to 0.59, the RMSE ranging from 14.37 to 12.79 mm/day, and the BIAS ranging from − 0.14 to 0.03 during the validation period. Undergraduate courses on the nature of science (NOS) often involve teaching a set of core elements. Without extensive unpacking and reflection, the complexity of those NOS elements could be easily misinterpreted and oversimplified by the students. Our paper will explain how we teach our Hong Kong university students the NOS by introducing traditional Chinese science in a general education common core course. This course adopted a seminar method of teaching by introducing and discussing the cultural–historical context in its pedagogical design. There are indicators that this approach is effective as the conflict between students' own culture and what they are learning generated a deeper reflection and integration of the newly learned with their prior knowledge and personal beliefs. Almost 80 million people globally are forcibly displaced. A small number reach wealthy western countries and seek asylum. Over half are children. Wealthy reception countries have increasingly adopted restrictive reception practices including immigration detention. There is an expanding literature on the mental health impacts of immigration detention for adults, but less about children. This scoping review identified 22 studies of children detained by 6 countries (Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Netherlands, the UK and the US) through searches of Medline, PsychINFO, Emcare, CINAHL and Scopus data bases for the period January 1992–May 2019. The results are presented thematically. There is quantitative data about the mental health of children and parents who are detained and qualitative evidence includes the words and drawings of detained children. The papers are predominantly small cross-sectional studies using mixed methodologies with convenience samples. Despite weaknesses in individual studies the review provides a rich and consistent picture of the experience and impact of immigration detention on children's wellbeing, parental mental health and parenting. Displaced children are exposed to peri-migration trauma and loss compounded by further adversity while held detained. There are high rates of distress, mental disorder, physical health and developmental problems in children aged from infancy to adolescence which persist after resettlement. Restrictive detention is a particularly adverse reception experience and children and parents should not be detained or separated for immigration purposes. The findings have implications for policy and practice. Clinicians and researchers have a role in advocacy for reception polices that support the wellbeing of accompanied and unaccompanied children who seek asylum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Public transport networks (PTNs) are critical in populated and rapidly densifying cities such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Mumbai, and Tokyo. Public transportation plays an indispensable role in urban resilience with an integrated, complex, and dynamically changeable network structure. Consequently, identifying and quantifying node criticality in complex PTNs is of great practical significance to improve network robustness from damage. Despite the proposition of various node criticality criteria to address this problem, few succeeded in more comprehensive aspects. Therefore, this paper presents an efficient and thorough ranking method, that is, entropy weight method (EWM)–technology for order preference by similarity to an ideal solution (TOPSIS), named EWM–TOPSIS, to evaluate node criticality by taking into account various node features in complex networks. Then we demonstrate it on the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) in Hong Kong by removing and recovering the top k critical nodes in descending order to compare the effectiveness of degree centrality (DC), betweenness centrality (BC), closeness centrality (CC), and the proposed EWM–TOPSIS method. Four evaluation indicators, that is, the frequency of nodes with the same ranking (F), the global network efficiency (E), the size of the largest connected component (LCC), and the average path length (APL), are computed to compare the performance of the four methods and measure network robustness under different designed attack and recovery strategies. Introduction: In recent years, a "business case" has emerged to argue that social policies and practices that exclude sexual minorities are not only socially unjust but also economically costly for an organization and the society. This paper asks: in an era of globally uneven sexual landscape, what are the consequences of non-inclusive policies and practices for the retainment or attrition of sexual minority talents? Methods: An online survey with 920 lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people, one of the largest of its kind in Hong Kong, was conducted in 2016. Results: It was found that 52.5% had considered leaving because of the lack of LGB-relevant social policies. It was also found that LGB people who showed a desire and a need to access LGB-relevant social policies, those who perceived LGB-relevant social policies as important, and those who were on higher income levels were more likely to have considered emigration. The top four countries that were named as desired migration destinations by the LGB people were Canada, Taiwan, the USA, and the UK. Conclusions: This paper coins the term "gay brain drain" to connect the research literature on LGB-related social policies, sexual migration, and brain drain. Policy implications: Differential treatment towards sexual minorities is not only socially unjust but also means that the society would lose out on attracting and retaining the best homegrown talents. Hong Kong's 'trilingual and biliterate' language policy (TaB, 三語兩文) is almost as old as the special administrative region (SAR) itself. Through free education and language support measures in school, students are expected to be conversant in English and Putonghua in addition to Cantonese, and be able to read and understand written Chinese and English. After being implemented for over two decades, however, there are signs that most students' language standards in Chinese and English fall short of the TaB target, as measured by the public examination results of successive generations of secondary school leavers. Designed with essentially Cantonese-dominant Hongkongers in mind, the TaB policy consists of many measures, with the 'medium of instruction streaming policy' introduced since September 1998 being the most controversial. Driven by the twin principles of monolingual English-medium instruction (EMI) and 'no language mixing allowed', secondary schools are divided into two streams. Stringent requirements must be met before a school could claim to be an EMI school. According to this 'late immersion' model for students aged 11–12 at secondary level, every year about 30 percent of the primary school leavers are allocated to an EMI school. Following Li (Multilingual Hong Kong: languages, literacies and identities. Springer, Cham, 2017), this paper will first discuss why the TaB target is such a tall order for Cantonese-dominant students by reviewing the relevant literature along five inter-related dimensions: contrastive linguistics, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, cognitive neuroscience, and instructional strategies and bilingual pedagogies. I will then examine the SAR government's language support measures to assess their effectiveness and explore possible alternatives. The paper will end with a number of recommendations, which together constitute an LPP (language policy and planning) roadmap for improving the chance with which the TaB policy is likely to produce more positive outcomes. (i) To re-prioritize the investment and extent of language support by strengthening the quality of language input at the key stages of learning from age 3–9, which in curriculum terms correspond with K1–P3; (ii) To use Cantonese as the medium of instruction for teaching all subjects except English and Putonghua as separate subjects at preschool (K1–K3, age 3–6); (iii) To explore the possibility of implementing total immersion in Putonghua for three years at lower primary level (P1–P3, age 6–9); (iv) To abandon the 'maximum exposure, no mixing' dogma in secondary education and to encourage basic and action research in bilingual pedagogies and instructional strategies informed by Content-and-language integrated learning (CLIL); (v) To attract academically bright and linguistically gifted students to receive professional training and be prepared and committed for a career in language teaching; and (vi) To encourage civil servants of various government offices, schoolteachers, and university staff to initiate a 'speak English/Putonghua where we can' campaign. For these policy measures to be successfully implemented and bear fruit, apart from careful planning, there ought to be strong leadership from within the government and the education sector, plus mechanisms for coordinating concerted actions on the part of various groups of stakeholders, notably teachers, school principals, educationalists, and experts of language teaching and learning in academia. Borrower hardship, while a critical issue, is not often addressed by consumer protection frameworks across the Asia–Pacific. The widespread use of payment holidays during the COVID-19 crisis provides a significant case study on the importance of having borrower hardship provisions as a consumer protection tool. This paper compares the pre-pandemic availability of payment holidays in three Asia–Pacific jurisdictions: Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. It evaluates their existing legislative frameworks, as well as regulatory and industry guidelines on borrower hardship, and contrasts this with their use of payment holidays during the pandemic. Where there were existing industry guidelines on borrower hardship, lenders were able to spearhead an industry-wide approach towards payment relief without regulatory intervention by governments. Beyond the pandemic, the paper argues that self-regulation has potential for protecting borrower interests by standardising the scope of, and the procedure for, obtaining hardship relief. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is threatened by potential tsunami hazards from the Littoral Fault Zone (LFZ) and the Manila subduction zone (MSZ), and may suffer huge damage because of its dense population, concentrated infrastructure, and low-lying coasts. Previous tsunami studies for the GBA made simple assumptions on the mechanisms of LFZ earthquakes, and used coarse bathymetry data in tsunami simulation, which limited the prediction of detailed tsunami hazard characteristics. In this paper, we develop a parallel dispersive tsunami model PCOMCOT to efficiently simulate dispersive, nonlinear, and breaking tsunami waves. We also construct large-scale and high-resolution bathymetry models for the GBA by correcting and integrating various data sources. Dynamic rupture simulation is performed for the LFZ to obtain a more reliable earthquake source model. We propose several representative earthquake scenarios for the LFZ and MSZ, and use PCOMCOT to calculate the resulting tsunami waves, currents, and inundation in the GBA. Our results indicate that if an Mw7.5 oblique-slip earthquake occurs in the LFZ off the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), the subsequent tsunami will primarily impact Hong Kong, causing maximum positive and negative waves of around 1 m and −2 m, respectively, along with slightly destructive currents (⩾1.5 m/s). An Mw9.0 MSZ megathrust earthquake can lead to widespread inundation with >1 m depth on the outlying islands of Macao and in the urban areas of Hong Kong around the Victoria Harbour. Besides, it will also cause catastrophic tsunami currents along the narrow waterways in Hong Kong and Macao, and the spatial distribution of strong currents (⩾3 m/s) shows a considerable discrepancy from the areas of serious inundation. This paper examines how family atmosphere, parental self-efficacy, parenting methods and children's patterns of mobile device use result in negative outcomes for children's use of mobile devices. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis found that a stressful and conflictive family atmosphere and higher dependence on mobile devices promote negative outcomes. The self-efficacy of parents in helping their children to avoid the negative outcomes was also found to be positive associated the actual negative outcomes that their children had experienced in using mobile devices. Data were collected from a sample of 1561 students from 39 secondary schools in Hong Kong, including students studying at the Form one to Form five levels (equivalent to the seventh to eighth grade) and 1233 of their parents. Hierarchical linear regression analysis was applied to examine the magnitude of the associations between these variables. The paper highlights the importance of avoiding a tense atmosphere and conflicts between parents and children. For service providers, this paper provides a comprehensive reference to understand how parents and children think about family dynamics and relationships under the impact of technological development on individual families. Also, parents would be more advantageous if they were more efficacious about themselves in helping children to avoid the negative outcomes. This study can help service providers determine which intervention approaches can effectively support families in managing parent–child conflicts, developing cohesiveness, and facilitating children's proper use of new technologies. Collaborative innovation can promote scientific productivity and the development of clean technology and thus has a great potential in constraining the ecological footprint. However, current studies on the impact of collaborative innovation on ecological footprint are insufficient, and results remain controversial. To better understand these impacts, this paper took Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area of China as a case, estimated the ecological footprint at the municipal level from 2008 to 2018, measured collaborative innovation both from four dimensions and from a composite approach, then applied threshold regression models to compare the impact of collaborative innovation on the ecological footprint across different economic intervals. The findings showed that: the ecological footprint of the Greater Bay Area displayed an overall upward trend with prominent spatial heterogeneity. The impact of collaborative innovation on the ecological footprint presented a double-threshold effect when examined with different indicators. Among which, the flow of scientific personnel and capital boosted the ecological footprint, which intensified with economic development, while collaboration in technology exerted significant inhibitory effects on ecological footprint, and the influence of inter-city knowledge collaboration was limited. Overall, collaborative innovation inhibited ecological footprint when measured by a composite index. This might inspire policymakers to adopt sustainable strategies depending on the type of collaborative innovation and the economic status of the city to constrain growth of the ecological footprint, thus minimizing the pressures of human activities on the environment and moving towards a more carbon neutral society. Gout is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases in Hong Kong. Although effective treatment options are readily available, the management of gout in Hong Kong remains suboptimal. Like other countries, the treatment goal in Hong Kong usually focuses on relieving symptoms of gout but not treating the serum urate level to target. As a result, patients with gout continue to suffer from the debilitating arthritis, as well as the renal, metabolic, and cardiovascular complications associated with gout. The Hong Kong Society of Rheumatology spearheaded the development of these consensus recommendations through a Delphi exercise that involved rheumatologists, primary care physicians, and other specialists in Hong Kong. Recommendations on acute gout management, gout prophylaxis, treatment of hyperuricemia and its precautions, co-administration of non-gout medications with urate-lowering therapy, and lifestyle advice have been included. Students in Asia usually receive financial literacy education in English. This study examines the foreign-language effects of financial literacy education both at home and school among secondary school students in Hong Kong (n = 1011). The study investigates the influence of language on students' risk-taking values, financial attitudes (conscientious and entitlement), and their subsequent financial behavior (saving, planning, and protection). Structural equation modeling results indicate significant positive connections between learning in English in school and the home language, student risk-taking values, and their conscientiousness and financial behavior. However, we also found that language effects were far more complex than only foreign-language effects, and entitlement has much less significance in an Asian context like Hong Kong. Although financial literacy is more accessible if students are taught in their native language, using English as the medium of instruction develops students' financial literacy in many other aspects, including their information access to valuable financial resources circulated worldwide. This paper explains why students who are proficient in English tend to be risk-takers but are nonetheless also conscientious in protecting themselves against financial losses. Concerns of equity with respect to the community college model in East Asia persist in educational research. In this study, we described and analysed students' "lived experience" in community colleges in Hong Kong in terms of the "warming up" or "cooling out" of their educational desire. Semistructured interviews with 14 graduates of community colleges in Hong Kong were conducted to determine how their experiences at community colleges affected their educational expectations and the extent to which community colleges help students reconsider their educational disadvantages in a competitive, meritocratic and massified higher education system. The qualitative interview data were inductively thematised into four aspects of college experience in relation to their educational expectations. The data revealed that Hong Kong's community colleges help some students develop their capabilities and change their educational expectations through democratic admissions, liberal pedagogic environments, learner-centred formative assessment and student services for strategic university articulation. Rather than cooling-out students' educational desire (characterised by gradual disengagement, objective denial, alternative achievement), community colleges in Hong Kong provide a second chance for failing and disadvantaged students to pursue a university education, but this warming-up function applies only to students who benefitted from the liberal mode of assessment and discovered and developed their academic capabilities in their college experience. The information technology industry has been identified as a priority industry for development in Hong Kong. Within this sector, there are a growing number of "new collar" jobs that may not require a traditional four-year degree. However, these jobs require a combination of technical and soft skills that are not often taught in secondary schools. The Applied Learning course titled "Tech Basics" was introduced to five secondary schools in 2019. It has the unique feature of bringing together secondary schools, a local public university, and industry partners in curriculum design and program delivery, to provide students with work-integrated learning. The curriculum includes authentic work environment exposure components such as company visits, mentorship programs, industry-led project competitions, and internships. This paper is a case study presenting detailed information on the program's model of work-integrated learning as. well as its evaluation. It explains the different roles of secondary schools, higher education institutes, and industry partners. To assess the impact of the program, three rounds of surveys were conducted among students taking the course and a control group over a three-year period. The theoretical framework of work integrated learning and mentoring was reviewed. Survey results and additional qualitative data are presented. This paper aims at metro station clustering based on passenger flow data. Compared with existing clustering methods that only use boarding or alighting data of each station separately, we focus on higher granularity origin-destination (O-D) path flow data, and provide more flexible and insightful clustering results. In particular, we regard the metro system as a network, with each station as a node. The real-time passenger flows over time between different O-D paths serve as directed edges between nodes. Compared with traditional networks, our edges are temporal curves, and can be regarded as functional data. For this functional data-edged graph, we are the first to develop a novel community detection approach for node clustering. Our method is based on functional factorization. First a dual time-warped sparse nonnegative functional factorization is proposed for extracting patterns of the functional edges. Then the passenger flow of each O-D path can be regarded as a linear combination of different extracted passenger flow patterns. Based on it, we construct a multi-view directed and weighted network, where each view represents one particular pattern, and the factorization coefficient of each O-D path on this pattern is treated as the weight of this directed edge in this particular view. Then a novel community detection algorithm based on nonnegative matrix tri-factorization is constructed according to the topological structure of the multi-view network. The fusion of different views can be either subjectively determined or objectively learnt in a data-driven way, which gives flexibility of the clustering algorithm to emphasize on different travel patterns. Rock classification provides vital information to geosciences and geological engineering practices. Reaping the benefits of the advances of computer vision-based deep learning artificial intelligence (AI) technology, this study aims to develop a next-generation convolutional neural network (CNN) to perform automatic rock classification. Two major challenging issues have been particularly addressed. First, most of the previous rock classifications are simply transfer learning of CNNs that are trained by life-like scenarios. Second, classifying rock types with similar textures leads to severe overfitting of CNNs. In this study, a novel CNN called HKUDES_Net is proposed and implemented to classify seven common Hong Kong rock types, namely fine-grained granite, medium-grained granite, coarse-grained granite, coarse ash tuff, fine ash tuff, feldsparphyric rhyolite, and granodiorite. With the aid of dynamic expansion, squeeze and excitation, and other strategies, HKUDES_Net can classify rock types with similar texture patterns/colors but different grain sizes. As compared with the other ten landmark CNNs and seven feature-based algorithms, HKUDES_Net has the best performance in precision (90.9%), recall (90.4%), and f1-score (90.5%). By implementing the alerting level, which restricts the training loss hovering above a small constant and prevents the validation loss from rising, the overfitting has been efficiently eliminated. The proposal and implementation of HKUDES_Net highlight the value of interdisciplinary research and will continuously pave the way for better coupling AI and geosciences. In other words, by putting a rock image into a CNN, the CNN will read the information from the image and tell people what rock type in the image is. This study develops and implements a next-generation CNN called HKUDES_Net to classify seven different rock types. Adopting different computational strategies, HKUDES_Net can classify rock types of different grain sizes with similar texture patterns/colors, which is challenging for other CNNs. As compared with the other landmark CNNs and machine learning algorithms, HKUDES_Net has much a better prediction accuracy performance. Interdisciplinary research on foreign language learning has important implications for learning and education. In this paper, we present the Repository of Third Language (L3) Spoken Narratives from Modern Language Learners in Hong Kong (L3HK Repository). This database contains 906 audio recordings and annotated transcripts of spoken narratives in French, German, and Spanish that were elicited from Cantonese-speaking (L1) young adults using a wordless picture book, "Frog, Where Are You?". All participants spoke English as the second language (L2) and learned the target language as a third language (L3). We collected their demographic information, answers to a motivation questionnaire, parental socioeconomic status, and music background. Furthermore, for a subset of participants, we collected their L1 and L2 proficiency scores and additional experimental data on working memory and music perception. This database is valuable for examining cross-sectional changes in foreign language learning. The extensive data on phenotypes provide opportunities to explore learner-internal and learner-external factors in foreign language learning outcomes. This article begins with a historical overview of the STEM education policy and related classroom practices in Hong Kong. Against the backdrop that the Hong Kong education authority has been promoting STEM education over the past few years, there has been a pressing need for effective strategies of implementing STEM education in the context of reduced class size classrooms (i.e. small class teaching). With a view to addressing this need, this article strives to exemplify the incorporation of STEM education into small class teaching settings. Intended as a conceptual paper drawing on design approaches for STEM lessons and a small class teaching framework, the article demonstrates the relevance of STEM education to small class teaching. Two illustrative lesson design examples are provided to showcase how the design approaches and framework can be operationalised. In addition, the article also offers a thoughtful discussion concerning the potential challenges of delivering the two sample lessons as well as the coping strategies. This study examined how sociodemographics, risk perception, and prior experience affected typhoons' disaster preparedness and emergency response. A total of 286 valid questionnaires were obtained from a typhoon-prone district in Hong Kong. The results indicated that sociodemographics, risk perception, and prior experience explained significant amounts of variances in protective behaviors. Among these variables, risk perception was found to be the most powerful predictor and it mediated the effects of prior experience on disaster preparedness and emergency response toward typhoons. Furthermore, disaster preparedness initiated emergency response toward typhoons, indicating the spillover of protective behaviors. The paper contributes to the knowledge body by providing a better understanding of the process and mechanism of the performance of protective behaviors. This paper reports the results of a quasi-experimental study that evaluated the effectiveness of collaborative mind mapping in three Hong Kong primary schools. More than 200 grade 4 students, divided into three pedagogical groups, participated in a variety of science learning activities with the aid of a mind map and/or collaborative group work. The results of diagnostic tests reveal the synergy of peer collaboration and mind mapping to be more effective than either collaboration or mind mapping alone in enhancing students' scientific achievement. Analysis of the students' science discourse and follow-up interviews indicates that collaborative mind mapping fosters learning motivation and facilitates the joint construction of conceptual knowledge in science. Recommendations are made for the integrative use of graphic organisers and group work, and implications for future research on science teaching in Hong Kong and elsewhere are further discussed. Nowadays, event forecasting in Twitter can be considered an essential, significant and difficult issue. Maximum conventional methods are focusing on temporal events like sports or elections. These methods do not calculate the spatial features too their correlation analysis. Hence, this paper proposes an Improved Deep Belief Neural Network (iDBNN) for civil unrest event forecasting in twitter data. This proposed method is utilized to forecast the future event with the consideration of the tweets. The proposed method is designed with three phases named as pre-processing phase, feature extraction phase, and civil unrest event forecasting. Initially, the proposed method is used to train the Hong Kong Protest event 2019 tweet data for forecasting events. In the pre-processing phase, removal of special symbol, removal of URL, username removal, tokenization and stop word removal are done. After that, the essential features such as domain weight, event weight, textual similarity, spatial similarity, temporal similarity, and Relative Document-Term Frequency Difference (RDTFD) are extracted and then applied for training the proposed model. To empower the training phase of proposed iDBNN method, the Jellyfish Algorithm is utilized to select optimal weight parameter coefficients of DBNN for training the model parameters. The projected technique is authenticated by statistical capacities and compared with the conventional methods such as Hidden Markov Model (HMM) and Random Forest (RF) respectively. Comparing with other traditional methods, the proposed model shows better performance in terms of prediction and processing time. Intelligently predicting the frequency and volume of natural hazards, including boulder falls, attracts widespread attention in earth science and engineering communities. Taking Hong Kong, China, which is a highly developed and densely populated city, as a research example, the present paper statistically studies the occurrence of boulder falls based on power law relationships and supervised machine learning. The 2002–2016 boulder fall inventory of Hong Kong, which consists of 194 boulder falls, is compiled and analyzed in detail, including volume and spatial distributions. Based on the findings, a power law relationship with the b-value greater than one is particularly proposed for Hong Kong, which then allows major boulder falls (volume ≥1 m3) occurring in two subsequent years to be accurately predicted. In order to predict volume ranges of potential boulder falls, eight supervised machine learning algorithms are trained and validated based on sixty-five filtered samples with five represented features. Two key conclusions are drawn from the findings. First, the geological settings, altitudes, and gradients of source locations are demonstrated to be three triggering factors of different volume ranges of boulder falls. Second, the logistic regression algorithm has the best performance in predicting boulder fall volumes among all the algorithms. The f1-score of 5-fold cross-validation is 72.9%, and the prediction accuracy of the test dataset is 75.8%. We are confident that the methodologies and results in this paper will pave the way for analyzing other types of natural terrain hazards in addition to boulder falls in the long run. As one of the most densely populated places in the world, Hong Kong fared relatively well in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, with a very low number of cases and fatalities per capita. This was mostly due to the Hong Kong government, healthcare workers, and the general public's institutional and individual memory after they successfully overcame the deadly severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) epidemic in 2003. However, while Hong Kong was well accustomed to measures such as wearing masks and social distancing, the cooperation of the Hong Kong public to government restrictions was highly affected by its local political context, especially after widespread anti-government protests began mid-2019. This brought the public's trust in government to an all-time low, creating a political 'new normal', which underpinned how COVID-19 policies would be proposed, accepted, and implemented, if at all. To understand how science advice was offered and how public health decisions were made, this research investigates the evolution of Hong Kong's science advisory mechanisms for public health from before SARS, after SARS, and during COVID-19 in 2020, including the roles of key organisations and departments, the establishment of new centres and committees, and the creation of workgroups and expert advisory panels. This paper compares and analyses the reasons behind these differences in science advisory mechanisms between SARS and COVID-19. The findings from this research reinforce the unquestionable need for robust science advisory structures and knowledgeable scientific experts to solve health-related crises, though more research is required to understand the ways in which science advice influences both policy decisions and public acceptance of these policies. The present paper explores the synchronic variations and diachronic changes in political discourses in Hong Kong (HK) and in Mainland of People's Republic of China (PRC). The relationship between lengths of linguistic constructs and their immediate constituents (including sentences and clauses, and clauses and words) are fitted using the function y = axb based on the Menzerath–Altmann (MA) law to capture the characteristics of language as self-organizing complex systems. We found that the two fitted parameters a and b, as distinctive characteristics of complex systems, can distinguish two regional variants of political speeches from HK and PRC over different periods in time. We also found that the same parameters can capture language changes between different periods of political speeches from the PRC. More specifically, we found that regional variations and historical changes show different degrees of salience at different constituency levels. In addition, we found compounding effects between historical change and regional variations. That is, the two regional variants of political speeches are closer to each other at the earliest diachronic period as compared with the latter two periods, as represented by the fitted parameters of the relationship between sentence and clause lengths. Our results provide strong support for the hypothesis for the MA Law capturing the characteristics of language as a complex self-organizing system, as the two fitted parameters account for the interaction of diachronic language change and synchronic variation.
