In this paper, we combine the S-iteration process introduced by Agarwal et al. (J. Nonlinear Convex Anal., 8(1), 61–79 2007) with the proximal point algorithm introduced by Rockafellar (SIAM J. Control Optim., 14, 877–898 1976) to propose a new modified proximal point algorithm based on the S-type iteration process for approximating a common element of the set of solutions of convex minimization problems and the set of fixed points of nearly asymptotically quasi-nonexpansive mappings in the framework of CAT(0) spaces and prove the △-convergence of the proposed algorithm for solving common minimization problem and common fixed point problem. Our result generalizes, extends and unifies the corresponding results of Dhompongsa and Panyanak (Comput. Math. Appl., 56, 2572–2579 2008), Khan and Abbas (Comput. Math. Many iterative algorithms like Picard, Mann, Ishikawa are very useful to solve fixed point problems of nonlinear operators in real Hilbert spaces. The recent trend is to enhance their convergence rate abruptly by using inertial terms. The purpose of this paper is to investigate a new inertial iterative algorithm for finding the fixed points of nonexpansive operators in the framework of Hilbert spaces. We study the weak convergence of the proposed algorithm under mild assumptions. We apply our algorithm to design a new accelerated proximal gradient method. This new proximal gradient technique is applied to regression problems. Numerical experiments have been conducted for regression problems with several publicly available high-dimensional datasets and compare the proposed algorithm with already existing algorithms on the basis of their performance for accuracy and objective function values. The hybrid steepest-descent method introduced by Yamada (2001) is an algorithmic solution to the variational inequality problem over the fixed point set of nonlinear mapping and applicable to a broad range of convexly constrained nonlinear inverse problems in real Hilbert spaces. Lehdili and Moudafi (1996) introduced the new prox-Tikhonov regularization method for proximal point algorithm to generate a strongly convergent sequence and established a convergence property for it by using the technique of variational distance in Hilbert spaces. In this paper, motivated by Yamada's hybrid steepest-descent and Lehdili and Moudafi's algorithms, a generalized hybrid steepest-descent algorithm for computing the solutions of the variational inequality problem over the common fixed point set of sequence of nonexpansive-type mappings in the framework of Banach space is proposed. The strong convergence for the proposed algorithm to the solution is guaranteed under some assumptions.
