A hydraulic interaction between a pond and shallow aquifer in a watershed surrounded by cultivations of sugarcane and eucalyptus trees was evaluated in a tropical zone in Brazil. The pond, located in lower topographic levels, was prematurely interpreted as the local shallow unconfined aquifer's discharge area, suggesting the groundwater could flow toward the pond. However, water table gradients indicated opposite directions, bringing up questions about the eucalyptus root's potential to access groundwater, consequently lowering the water level and changing the groundwater flow directions. Physicochemical parameters, stable isotopes of δ18O and δ2H, major ions analysis were determined in samples of groundwater and pond water; geophysical surveys and groundwater level measurements were performed before and after the eucalyptus cutting. The results showed (1) the eucalyptus does not have a significant influence on the groundwater dynamic; (2) the pond behaves as a recharge, not a discharge area; and (3) previously considered as a local flow, the interaction between groundwater and pond is determined by an intermediate flow system, controlled by a near spring, independently of the seasonal variation and land uses. A time-series approach to the estimation of recharge rate in unconfined aquifers of highly variable water level is proposed. The approach, which is based on the water-table fluctuation method (WTF), utilizes discrete water-level measurements. Other similar techniques require continuous measurements, which makes them impossible to apply in cases where no data from automatic loggers are available. The procedure is deployed at the Ressacada Farm site, southern Brazil, on a coastal shallow aquifer located in a humid subtropical climate where diurnal water-level variations of up to 1 m can follow a precipitation event. The effect of tidal fluctuations on the groundwater levels is analyzed using a harmonic component builder, while a time-variable drainage term is evaluated through an independent analysis and included in the assessment. The estimated recharge values are compared with those obtained from the continuous measurements showing a good agreement with the approaches for discrete dataset intervals of up to 15 days. Subsequently, the estimated recharge rates are incorporated into a transient groundwater-flow model and the water levels are compared showing a good match. This study was carried out in the Córrego do Vaçununga basin constituted of eolic sandstones of Botucatu Formation and residual unconsolidated materials (>90%), considered the most important unconfined aquifer in Brazil, in the city of Luiz Antonio, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Laboratory and in situ tests were performed to characterize the unconsolidated materials in terms of basic physical properties, potential infiltration rate, suction and hydraulic conductivity. The results for infiltration and overland flow depths were obtained according to Morel-Seytoux and Khanji (Water Resour Res 10(4):795–800, ) and Chu (Water Resour Res 14(3):461–466, ) adaptation of the Green and Ampt [J Agr Sci 4(Part 1):1–24, ] model for steady and transient rainfalls, respectively. Rainfall data were collected from January of 2000 to December of 2002, and 12 scenarios were defined considering the intensity and durations. Rather than high homogeneity in terms of the texture of unconsolidated materials, the infiltration and overland flow ratio depends on the type of land use and associated management practices. The results showed that rainfall with high intensity and short duration do not produce high overland flow ratio as we have observed for transient scenarios with long duration and low intensities. U-modeled groundwater residence times were estimated by changes in 234U/238U activity ratio (AR) and U content of groundwaters from Poços de Caldas city situated at the Poços de Caldas alkaline massif, Brazil. The estimated ages are more realistic than others generated by the use of hydraulic conductivity data and available information about the weathering rate of rocks in the plateau. The 234U/238U AR and reciprocal of the dissolved U-content data also defined a ternary plot that allowed the calculation of the relative volume of three source waters for the mixed water. Such U-isotopes modeling for mixing calculations indicated that the dominant phase (68%) in the mixture is thermal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
