Substance use disorder (SUD) can have circadian characteristics and individuals with evening chronotype are more prone to addiction. In this study, the effect of chronotypes on the treatment outcomes of SUD was investigated. The study included 66 patients who were diagnosed with SUD according to DSM-5. Two clinical interviews were conducted at 6-month intervals, and remission/relapse status was evaluated at the second interview. The Structured Clinical Interview Form for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), Addiction Profile Index Practitioner Form, Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) were applied to the patients. MEQ scores of relapsed patients were found to be different in terms of eveningness than those in remission (45.62 ± 8.70 versus 49.75 ± 7.60, p = 0.045). As the craving and addiction profile index total scores (addiction severity) increased, eveningness chronotype scores also increased (r = − 0.387 and r = − 0.286, respectively). The mean scores of craving and BDI were higher in relapsed patients compared to those in remission (p = 0.003 and p = 0.015, respectively). Our results suggest that patients with SUD had a lower morningness chronotype than the general population; additionally, more relapsed patients had an eveningness chronotype. Objectives: We report routinely collected outcome data from an 8-week outpatient rehabilitative therapy program. The aims of the intervention were to (1) reduce symptom severity and (2) improve functional mobility in adults with functional neurological disorder (FND). Methods: The program delivered individual physiotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and self-management sessions, group physiotherapy, and psychoeducation. Outcome measures included the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS), 10-Meter Walk Test (10MWT), Timed Up and Go (TUG), and Berg Balance Scale (BBS). Data were analyzed retrospectively in accordance with routine service evaluation. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests assessed changes in outcomes between weeks 1 and 8 for all patients completing treatment (n = 45). For patients who attended the 3-month follow-up (n = 31), Friedman's ANOVA assessed overall change in outcomes over time. Post hoc Wilcoxon signed-rank tests compared pairs of time-points (Weeks 1, 8, and 3-month follow-up). Results: Analyses of patients completing the program revealed significant improvements in scores between week 1 and week 8. Excluding the BBS, there were statistically significant improvements in all outcomes between weeks 1 and 8 and between weeks 1 and 3-month follow-up. Discussion: This outpatient therapy program provided effective treatment for FND. Purpose: This study was a cross-sectional study that aimed to compare the total Landing error scoring system (LESS) scores of individuals with Patellofemoral pain (PFP) with healthy controls and assess the association of pain, function, and psychological factors with LESS score. Methods: Twenty-seven male athletes with PFP completed a standardized jump-landing task. They were compared with a matched, healthy group. Also, participants completed four questionnaires involving the visual analog scale (VAS), Anterior knee pain scale (AKPS), Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK), Beck anxiety and depression inventory scale (BAI, BDI). Results: PFP group had significantly a higher total LESS score than the control group. They displayed lateral trunk flexion and less knee flexion in the initial contact of landing. Our results showed a significant strong correlation between VAS, AKPS, and TSK with a final score LESS. In addition, a low to moderate significant correlation obtained between BAI, BDI and final score LESS. Conclusions: The LESS is a useful clinical test for evaluating landing errors in people with PFP. Tinnitus is usually associated with different comorbidities such as anxiety, annoyance and depression. Evidences have targeted two main places for tinnitus treatment, namely the auditory cortex and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reportedly associated with improvement of cognitive functions in individuals. This study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effects of repeated sessions of anodal bifrontal tDCS on tinnitus symptoms. Furthermore, the tDCS impacts on the comorbid depression and anxiety of the patients were investigated. Forty-two voluntaries that suffers from chronic tinnitus were randomly assigned into "real tDCS" (n = 21) and "sham tDCS" (n = 21) groups. The tDCS group, received tDCS with the protocol consisted of 2 mA current, daily one session of 20 min, 6 consecutive days per week and for 4 consecutive weeks. The tinnitus handicap inventory (THI) scale, was measured before the first tDCS session and at one-week and two weeks follow-up. With the same intervals; the distress-related tinnitus was evaluated using visual analogue scale. Depression and anxiety scores were also measured using the Beck depression inventory and Beck anxiety inventory scales, respectively. Our findings indicated that THI score, depression and anxiety level has been gradually diminished across subsequent measurement intervals. We also find significant reduction of distress-related tinnitus in the real-tDCS group after treatment. We conclude that application of tDCS to the bilateral DLPFC region alleviates chronic tinnitus and it should be considered in patients with refractory tinnitus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS) has been widely used to evaluate for assessing mindfulness. The purpose of this research was psychometric validation of the Farsi version of the MAAS among a sample of Iranian students in the USA. The sample included 181 Iranian students attending universities in San Diego, CA. The MAAS was evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch analysis. Results of the CFA indicated a single factor structure with an acceptable fit to the data: sbX2 = 169.53 (P < 0.001); RMR = 0.084; CFI = 0.92; and RMSEA = 0.068. All of the items displayed significant factor loadings. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between MAAS and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) (r = − 0.51; P < 0.01) and Beck Depression Inventory — Second Edition (BDI‐II) (r = − 0.407; P < 0.01). These findings demonstrated acceptable levels of discriminant validity. Consequently, the Farsi version of MAAS was a valid and reliable instrument for assessing Iranian students' mindfulness outside Iran. This study indicated directions for future researches. Homeopathic medicine has a place among the non-hormonal treatment options for alleviating menopausal symptoms. The aim was to evaluate homeopathic treatment on menopausal symptoms. Thirty menopausal women were recruited from NRC and treated individually by homeopathic remedies for 6 weeks, with no change in their regular diets. Severity of menopausal symptoms was assessed before and after treatment using Menopause Rating Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory, and biochemical parameters (FSH, Testosterone, Progesterone, Estradiol, IL-6 MDA) were done before and after the treatment. The mean overall total symptoms score and biochemical markers showed significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05); however, FSH, Testosterone, Progesterone, IL-6, and MDA were decreased, while Estradiol was increased. Introduction: The IASP ICD-11 chronic primary pain (CPP) definition includes 19 different painful conditions. In recent years, interest in the potential role of cannabinoids in the management of CPP has increased, since they demonstrated a possible efficacy in treating pain, especially in secondary pain conditions. However, limited evidence is available for patients with CPP. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of cannabinoid administration in CPP. Methods: PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library were searched form the beginning up to 31 October 2021 to retrieve published articles of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or observational, retrospective or prospective, studies, investigating cannabinoids in CPP. The study screening process was completed during November 2021. The primary outcome was pain reduction by means of the visual analogue scale (VAS). Secondary outcomes were quality of life by means of the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) or other available scales, appetite, anxiety, depression, and sleep by means of any available scales. Safety was assessed with the reporting of serious adverse events (SAE) and discontinuation due to adverse events. Risk of bias was assessed. The weighted generic inverse variance method and Mantel–Haenszel method were used to estimate the mean difference (MD) and odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) for continuous and dichotomous outcomes, respectively. For outcome measures reported with different scales (pain, anxiety, depression), we used the standardized MD (SMD) as the effect measure and then converted it into units of the VAS scale for pain, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for anxiety, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for depression. Summary of findings was produced using GRADEproGDT. Results: From 3007 identified records, we included eight articles reporting the results of eight different RCTs (four parallel and four crossover studies; seven compared to placebo and one to amitriptyline), with a total population of 240 patients. VAS pain reduction was non-significant for cannabinoids against placebo (MD = − 0.64; 95% CI − 1.30 to 0.02) or amitriptyline (MD = − 0.19; 95% CI − 0.58 to 0.19). More than 4 weeks cannabinoid treatment significantly reduced pain compared to placebo in parallel studies with more than 4 weeks of treatment duration (MD = − 1.28; 95% CI − 2.33 to − 0.22). Differences for the FIQ (MD = − 21.69; 95% CI − 46.20 to 2.82), BAI (MD = − 2.32; 95% CI − 7.99 to 3.08), and BDI (MD = 2.32; 95% CI − 1.71 to 6.35) were non-significant, likewise for discontinuation due to adverse events (OR = 2.15; 95% CI 0.44–10.65), when comparing cannabinoids to placebo. The quality of the evidence was generally low mainly as a result of imprecision and risk of bias. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the sleep quality of spouses of patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS). Methods: Total 49 spouses of patients with RLS (Group 1) and 47 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (Group 2) were enrolled. Sleep quality was assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) were applied to all participants. High risk of the sleep apnea was excluded by Berlin Questionnaire. The RLS severity of patients was determined by International Restless Legs Syndrome rating scale. Results: The mean age was 44.91 ± 12.81 in Group 1 (25 female, 24 male) and 41.48 ± 8.20 in Group 2 (25 female, 22 male). 35 (71.4%) participants in Group 1 and 20 (42.6%) participants in Group 2 had poor sleep quality (p = 0.004). Sleep quality was poor in 84% (n = 21) of female and 58.3% (n = 14) of male in Group 1 (p = 0.05). Sleep quality, insomnia and daytime sleepiness found to be correlated significantly with RLS severity (p < 0.05). Scores of BDI and BAI also correlated with PSQI (p = 0.002, p = 0.03). The significant relationship was observed between subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, and disease severity (p = 0.03, p = 0.005). Conclusion: Restless legs syndrome may be a factor that may impair the quality of sleep in spouses of patients. Sleep quality is important in an individual's relationship with his / her health and spouse. The association of non-motor symptoms (NMSs) with fall-related factors in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) remains to be further elucidated in the early stages of the disease. Eighty-six patients with less than 5 years of the onset of PD were retrospectively enrolled in the study. We assessed potential fall-related risk factors including (1) a history of falls during the past year (faller versus non-faller), (2) the fear of falling (FoF), and (3) the freezing of gait (FoG). Different types of NMSs were measured using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), the Parkinson's disease Fatigue Scale (PFS), and the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease—Autonomic dysfunction (SCOPA-AUT). The faller group (37.2%) showed higher scores for BDI, BAI, PFS, and SCOPA-AUT, compared to the non-faller group. From logistic regression analyses, the prior history of falls was related to the gastrointestinal domain of SCOPA-AUT, FoF was associated with BAI, and gastrointestinal and urinary domains of SCOPA-AUT, and FoG was linked to BAI and gastrointestinal domain of SCOPA-AUT. The purpose of the study is to evaluate sleep disorders in dysmenorrhea patients and investigate the relationship between sleep disorders and anxiety and depression levels in these patients. This cross-sectional study included 55 primary dysmenorrhea patients who were admitted to the emergency department as well as 47 healthy control subjects. All participants were assessed using Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), Berlin Questionnaire, Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Presence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) was evaluated according to International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group criteria. Primary dysmenorrhea patients had significantly higher ISI, PSQI overall and ESS scores compared to the control group (p = 0.009, p < 0.001, p = 0.007, respectively). While 20% of primary dysmenorrhea patients met RLS criteria, this rate was 4.3% in the control group (p = 0.017). Sleep quality was significantly correlated with severity of pain, anxiety, and depression in primary dysmenorrhea patients (r = 0.409, p < 0.001; r = 0.527, p < 0.001; r = 0.567, p < 0.001; respectively). This study demonstrates increased rates of sleep disorders in dysmenorrhea patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of alexithymia in opioid dependents compared to the controls and to examine the relationship between alexithymia and depression, anxiety, and self-esteem in opioid dependents. Fifty male heroin-dependent outpatients who completed the detoxification process according to DSM-IV TR diagnostic criteria and 50 control subjects matched for age, gender, and education status who do not abuse heroin or any other substances were included in the study. Subjects were interviewed by using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV (SCID-I). Variables of interest were assessed according to Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Forty-two percent of the opioid dependents were estimated as alexithymic according to the cut-off scores of TAS-20 (> 61), while this ratio was 10% for the control group. The mean TAS-20 score in the dependent group was significantly higher than in the control group. BDI, BAI, and RSES scores were also found to be significantly higher in the dependent group, particularly in the alexithymic opioid dependent group. There were significant positive correlations between TAS-20 and BDI, BAI, and RSES scores. Objective: The greater occipital nerve block (GONB) with local anesthetics is an effective treatment for chronic migraine (CM). In this study, it was aimed to demonstrate the change in quality of life, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance scores before and after treatment in CM patients who underwent GONB and the effectiveness of treatment. Patients and methods: The study included 84 patients diagnosed as CM according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders III beta version diagnostic criteria. The 24-Hour Migraine Quality of Life Questionnaire (MQoLQ), Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Headache Impact Test (HIT), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were applied on patients before GONB treatment and at posttreatment months 1 and 3. Results: MQoLQ scores, which measured the daily quality of life, were 38 [3–66] before GONB treatment, and 64 [38–88] in the first month and 72 [40–86] in the third month after treatment. In addition, this increase was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Furthermore, we found a statistically significant decrease in disability, depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbance scores after treatment (p < 0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we observed a prominent improvement in quality of life and disability rates of CM patients treated with GONB compared to pretreatment. Purpose: To determine the associations between pre-treatment self-reported stress level, salivary cortisol levels, and clinical pregnancy outcome in couples undergoing assisted reproductive technology treatment (ART).Study Design: Seventy-five couples (150 patients) undergoing ART treatment were enrolled in this study. Psychological variables were assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Beck Depression Inventory. Salivary cortisol levels were obtained from each couple prior to commencing gonadotropin treatment at several times (upon waking and at 15, 30, and 60 min after waking).Results: There was no statistically significant association between the self-reported stress levels and the ART treatment outcome in couples. Women with a successful outcome after ART treatment had higher median salivary cortisol levels than women who had an unsuccessful result [24.7 (19.9-63.1) vs. 20.7 (10.4-30.4), respectively]. There was no statistically significant difference in the median salivary cortisol levels of men in relation to ART treatment outcome. Salivary cortisol levels of the couples were not correlated.Conclusions: Women who had higher median salivary cortisol levels in the pre-treatment period had a higher clinical pregnancy rate. The study aimed to evaluate an integrated intensive cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) group treatment for people with substance-related syndrome in outpatient care and to identify eventual gender differences. The study population consisted of 35 outpatients (18 male, 17 female) at a clinic in Western Sweden. The patients completed a four-month period of intensive group therapy and participated in the data collection at admission and discharge. The data were collected using the following inventories: Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Hopelessness Scale, and Trait Hope Scale. Results showed decreases in anxiety, depression and experience of hopelessness, and increases in self-esteem and hope. In females, the most dramatic improvement was measured for the anxiety and depression attributes, while in males the strongest effect was measured for hope and self-esteem. Background: Ketamine has emerged as a major substance of abuse worldwide. Evidence suggests a role of orexin system in reward processing, withdrawal, and stress response. It also interacts with the stress mechanisms of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis to regulate drug-taking behavior. The study aimed to explore the relevance of orexin and stress hormones to chronic ketamine abuse. Methods: We enrolled 67 ketamine-dependent (KD) patients and 64 controls. The levels of orexin-A, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and cortisol were measured at baseline, 1 week, and 2 weeks after ketamine discontinuation. KD patients were assessed by Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Visual Analogue Scale for ketamine craving at baseline. Results: Compared with the controls, KD patients had significantly lower orexin-A (0.65 ± 0.12 vs. 0.74 ± 0.10 ng/mL, p < 0.001) and increased ACTH (32.3 ± 16.3 vs. 22.3 ± 11.0 pg/mL, p = 0.008) levels at baseline, whereas cortisol levels were similar between two groups. Levels of the three markers did not correlate with ketamine use variables, craving, depression, or anxiety symptoms. The levels did not alter after 1 or 2 weeks of ketamine discontinuation. Notably, those with higher anxiety had lower orexin-A but increased cortisol levels than did those with lower anxiety. Conclusions: This study showed that KD patients had persistent orexin-A reduction and stress hormone dysregulation in early abstinence. The anxious phenotype of KD might be associated with a lower orexin-A expression. These results point to a promising pathway to investigate the neurochemical mechanisms of ketamine addiction. Parkinson's disease (PD) is classically considered a motor disease; however, several non-motor symptoms are also present, including psychiatric complaints. In recent decades, the metals Ca, Fe, and Zn have gained prominence as potential etiologic factors in motoric signs of PD. However, metal alterations could be associated with the non-motor symptoms of PD. We wished to correlate the levels of these metals with the co-occurrence of depression, anxiety, and psychotic symptoms in PD patients. To this end, the Beck Depression Inventory, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Scales for Outcomes in Parkinson's disease-Psychiatric Complications (SCOPA-PC) were implemented to evaluate mood disorders and psychiatric complications. Flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was used to assess concentrations of Ca, Fe, and Zn in hair samples collected from 22 clinically diagnosed PD patients, which represented the entire cohort of accessible patients in a Brazilian health registry, and 33 healthy individuals. While Ca and Fe alterations were not found to be associated with psychiatric complaints in the PD group, significantly higher levels of Zn were correlated in PD patients with depression and some psychotic symptoms. Within individual domains of the SCOPA-PC, significantly higher levels of Zn were correlated with the presence of hallucination, illusion, and paranoid ideation when compared to controls and PD patients who did not present these symptoms. Although our sample size is small and findings need to be replicated in larger and heterogeneous populations, our results provide a new perspective on the use of monitoring of Zn levels as a potential biomarker of psychiatric complaints, and may be useful in the development of more effective therapeutic approaches for the management of PD patients with co-occurrence of psychiatric disorders. Introduction/Objective: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is usually seen in among younger person of working age and carries a significant economic burden. It was aimed to explore the relation of work instability with fatigue, depression, and anxiety in working AS patients comparing with healthy controls.Method: This case-control study was conducted on working 61 AS patients and 40 sex-age-matched working healthy controls. The data were collected using Visual analogue scale-pain, Bath AS Disease Activity Index, Bath AS Functional Index, Bath AS Metrology Index in patients; and Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Anxiety Inventory, Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue, AS Work Instability Scale in all participants. Data were analyzed by SPSS, using chi-squared test, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation analysis, and multivariate linear regression analysis.Results: Depression, fatigue, and work instability scores were significantly higher in patients than controls (p < 0.05). Clinical parameters (except spinal mobility) showed a significant worsening across the levels of work instability in patients (p < 0.05) and work instability scores were positively correlated with all clinical parameters except spinal mobility (p < 0.001). There was a weak correlation between work instability and spinal mobility (p < 0.05). Fatigue (p < 0.001), pain, and functional capacity scores (p < 0.05) were found to be influential variables on work instability scores.Conclusion: The results of this study demonstrated that fatigue and depressive symptoms had negative effect on work instability beside pain, disease activity, and functionality in patients with AS. Sexuality is an important part of healthy life. Patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) may be vulnerable to sexual problems because of disease activity and comorbid emotional problems. However, sexuality is a scarcely studied subject in AS. The aim of this study is to compare patients with AS with healthy control. A total of 43 male patients, who referred to the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinics of the Karadeniz Technical University Farabi Hospital between May 2010 and July 2010, and were diagnosed as AS according to modified New York criteria, were included in the study. Control group consisted of healthy 43 age- and sex-matched male individuals with normal inflammatory levels. The AS patients were compared in means of sociodemographic variables and sexual function with Glombok-Rust Sexual Satisfaction Scale (GRSSS) and clinical interview. Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used to determine anxiety and depression levels, respectively. The disease activity and functional conditions were evaluated with the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI), the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Metrology Index (BASMI) and the Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDI). A total of 43 patients with AS and 43 healthy heterosexual male were included in the study. The total GRSSS score was significantly higher in patients with AS, whereas they also had significantly higher sexual complaint than healthy control. The diagnosis of sexual dysfunction according to DSM-IV was significantly higher in the patients with AS as well as depression and anxiety. In study group, GRSSS total score was modestly correlated with disease activity. The psychological status had close relation with sexual functions in AS. It was aimed to investigate the existence of the symptoms related to fibromyalgia in the first-degree relatives or spouses of the patients and to assess the psychologic and general health status of these individuals and the correlation of these with the patients' status. Thirty-seven patients with FS, 32 first-degree relatives or spouses of the patients and 30 healthy subjects as a control group were included. Symptoms related to FS were recorded in all subjects. Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and Nottingham Health Profile were used to assess the components of functional status and quality of life. General health status was evaluated by General Health Questionnaire. Beck Depression Inventory and Beck Anxiety Inventory were used to assess the psychologic status. There were significant differences in the frequency of the symptoms between three groups ( P < 0.05). Symptoms and signs related to of relatives/spouses of the patients and healthy controls were found to be significantly lower than those of the patients. GHQ, BAI and BDI scores of patients were found to be significantly higher than relative/spouses and control groups ( P < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences between three groups in energy level, pain, sleep and physical abilities subscores of NHP ( P < 0.05). No significant differences were detected in NHP subscores between relative/spouses of the patients and controls ( P > 0.05). No fibromyalgia symptoms or signs were detected in the relatives/spouses. Trait negative affect has been implicated as a risk marker for cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms underlying this association are uncertain. Our aim was to examine associations between trait measures of anger, hostility, depression, and anxiety with endothelial dysfunction via brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD), an early indicator of cardiovascular disease. FMD was examined in 332 healthy older adults. Measures included Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventories, Cook–Medley Hostility Scale, and Spielberger State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory (Anger In, Anger Out, and Trait Anger). Mean age was 60.5 ± 4.8 years; 83% of participants were Caucasian and 49% were female. FMD was greater in women compared to men (6.17% vs. 4.07%, p < 0.001). Women reported significantly greater Anxiety ( p < 0.001), and men reported greater Hostility ( p = 0.004). In separate multivariable linear regression models controlling for cardiovascular risk factors, plus current hormone therapy for women, smaller FMD was associated with higher Anger In for women ( β = −0.222, p = 0.04) and showed a trend with higher Hostility for men ( β = −0.082, p = 0.09). Endothelial dysfunction, as indicated by less vasodilatation of the brachial artery, is positively associated with measures of hostility and anger suppression in healthy older adults. To investigate the common and specific dimensions of anxiety and depression in adolescents, the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI; Beck, A. T., & Steer, R. A. Manual for the Beck Anxiety Inventory. San Antonio, TX: Psychological Corporation 1993a) and Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; Beck, A. T., Steer, R. A., & Brown, G. K. Manual for Beck Depression Inventory (2nd Ed.). San Antonio, TX: Psychological Corporation 1996) were administered to 840 adolescent (13–17 years old) outpatients who were diagnosed with various types of psychiatric disorders. A Schmid-Leiman transformation was used with the iterated-principal-factor pattern matrix of the BAI and the BDI-II loadings. The amounts of orthogonalized common variance that were explained by the one second-order (56%), one first-order depression (22%), and two first-order anxiety (22%) dimensions were comparable to those previously reported for adult psychiatric outpatients. Background: The literature has few studies on the quality of the mother-child interaction when mothers suffer from chronic anxiety and depression. This study aimed to compare characteristics of the interaction between 14-month-old children and their mothers who presented symptoms of chronic anxiety or depression with those of 14-month-old children and their mothers who did not present mental problems. Method: The sample consisted of 40 mother-infant dyads selected from a prospective cohort study. They were assessed using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory, at three time points: during pregnancy and at 6 months and 14 months of the infant's life. Three groups were formed: 10 mothers with symptoms of chronic anxiety, 8 mothers with symptoms of chronic depression, and a control group of 22 mothers without mental health problems. The mothers responded to a socioeconomic questionnaire, and then a 7-min episode of the dyad interaction was recorded and assessed using categories indicated in a dyadic interaction assessment protocol. This consisted of six categories that evaluate the behavior of the caregiver and four categories that evaluate the child's behavior. Results: A significantly higher percentage of mothers with chronic depressive symptoms had not completed high school and did not live with a partner. When comparing the interaction behaviors of the three groups, mothers with symptoms of chronic depression were significantly less sensitive, were more disengaged, and showed less positive affect than those in the control group. They also engaged in significantly fewer stimulations and displayed more negative affect compared with both the control group and mothers with chronic anxiety symptoms. Anxious mothers presented greater intrusiveness compared with mothers in the control group. Regarding the children, those with mothers showing symptoms of chronic depression interacted significantly less than those with mothers showing symptoms of chronic anxiety and the control group. Conclusions: The results indicate that mother-infant interaction is most severely compromised among mother-infant dyads comprised of mothers with chronic depressive symptoms, compared with dyads of mothers with chronic anxiety symptoms and dyads of control group mothers without mental health problems.
