This paper continues the work of Kang and Larsson Theoretical and Applied Climatology 116:537–548 (2014) What is the link between temperature and carbon dioxide levels? A Granger causality analysis based on ice core data. Theoretical and Applied Climatology 116:537-548, by adding methane to the study of causality between temperature and carbon dioxide. The data used goes 800,000 years back in time which is possible due to it being extracted from ice cores located at Dome C in Antarctica. First we use linear interpolation to make the three data sets equidistant to be able to employ statistical methods. We adjust for a deterministic trend and find the best model fit to be an autoregressive model with lag two and a piecewise quadratic trend. By employing multivariate Granger causality tests we find strong evidence that temperature, carbon dioxide and methane all Granger cause each other in both directions i.e. carbon dioxide Granger causes temperature and temperature Granger causes carbon dioxide, etc. This is in accordance with the findings of Kang and Larsson, with the extension that we can add methane to establish a trivariate feedback system between temperature, carbon dioxide and methane. The shifts in soil metabolism as a response to warming and wrack subsidies on Antarctic sedimentary shores have not been studied to date. With this aim, macroalgal deposits, as well as inorganic nutrients and CO2 emission were quantified along the shores of Port Foster, on Deception Island, Antarctic Peninsula. The results indicated a positive relationship between the amount of wrack supplies and sediment metabolism, measured both as CO2 emission through the sediment surface and as amount of inorganic nutrients released to the interstitial pore water. The effect of warming on algal wrack decay was analyzed in a manipulative field experiment where passive open-top chambers (OTCs) were used to increase soil temperature. By doing this, temperature raised by 0.9°C under patches of the red macroalgae Palmaria decipiens, whereas there was an increase of 2.4°C on bare sand. The results indicated that a small warming accelerated mineralization rates of C, N and P of the algal biomass, without significant changes in the bulk of inorganic nutrients released. Over 12 days of experiment, 8.3% of the total C in algal tissues was released as CO2 in the OTC plots, compared to 6.4% at ambient temperature. CO2 emission in bare sand plots warmed with OTCs was three times the amount measured in the ambient plots. Collembola was the dominant soil fauna, with densities negatively affected by warming and positively related to the organic content of sediment. This study confirms the key role of sandy shores in recycling ocean derived organic matter, highlighting the sensitivity of Antarctic ecosystems to a changing scenario of climate change that predicts significant increases in temperature over the next few decades. Understanding relationships between environmental changes and soil microbial respiration is critical for predicting changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) fluxes and content. The maritime Antarctic is experiencing one of the fastest rates of warming in the world and is therefore a key location to examine the effect of temperature on SOC mineralization by the respiration of soil micro-organisms. However, depletion of the labile substrates at higher temperatures relative to the total SOC and greater temperature sensitivity of recalcitrant components of the SOC confound simple interpretations of the effects of warming. We have addressed these issues by testing the hypothesis that respiration by heterotrophic soil micro-organisms is not down-regulated with increasing temperature by comparing the increase in biomass-specific respiration rate with temperature to the increase in respiration rate per unit SOC. We used five soils from the maritime Antarctic ranging in latitude and SOC content and measured the soil respiratory responses to temperatures ranging from 2 to 50 °C in laboratory incubations lasting up to 31 days. In all cases, soil respiration increased with temperature up to 50 °C, even though this exceeds the temperatures normally be experienced, indicating that the community contained sufficient physiological diversity to be able to respire over large temperature ranges. Both the biomass-specific respiration rate and the overall rate of SOC mineralization increased with temperature, which we interpret as respiration by soil micro-organisms not down-regulating relative to temperature. We present new equilibrium mixed-volatile (HO-CO) solubility data for a phonotephrite from Erebus volcano, Antarctica. HO-CO-saturated experiments were conducted at 400-700 MPa, 1,190 °C, and ~NNO + 1 in non-end-loaded piston cylinders. Equilibrium HO-CO fluid compositions were determined using low-temperature vacuum manometry, and the volatile and major element compositions of the glassy run products were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and electron microprobe. Results show that the phonotephrite used in this study will dissolve ~0.8 wt% CO at 700 MPa and a fluid composition of $$ X_{{{\text{H}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}}} $$ ~0.4, in agreement with previous experimental studies on mafic alkaline rocks. Furthermore, the dissolution of CO at moderate to high $$ X_{{{\text{H}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}}}^{\text{fluid}} $$ in our experiments exceeds that predicted using lower-pressure experiments on similar melts from the literature, suggesting a departure from Henrian behavior of volatiles in the melt at pressures above 400 MPa. With these data, we place new constraints on the modeling of Erebus melt inclusion and gas emission data and thus the interpretation of its magma plumbing system and the contributions of primitive magmas to passive and explosive degassing from the Erebus phonolite lava lake.
