variety of factors can influence an individual's choice of within-group spatial position. For terrestrial social animals, predation, feeding success, and social competition are thought to be three of the most important variables. The relative importance of these three factors was investigated in groups of ring-tailed coatis ( Nasua nasua) in Iguazú, Argentina. Different age/sex classes responded differently to these three variables. Coatis were found in close proximity to their own age/sex class more often than random, and three out of four age/sex classes were found to exhibit within-group spatial position preferences which differed from random. Juveniles were located more often at the front edge and were rarely found at the back of the group. Juveniles appeared to choose spatial locations based on feeding success and not predation avoidance. Since juveniles are the most susceptible to predation and presumably have less prior knowledge of food source location, these results have important implications in relation to predator-sensitive foraging and models of democratic group leadership. Subadults were subordinate to adult females, and their relationships were characterized by high levels of aggression. This aggression was especially common during the first half of the coati year (Nov-April), and subadults were more peripheralized during this time period. Subadults likely chose spatial positions to avoid aggression and were actively excluded from the center of the group by adult females. In the Iguazú coati groups, it appeared that food acquisition and social agonism were the major determinants driving spatial choice, while predation played little or no role. This paper demonstrates that within-group spatial structure can be a complex process shaped by differences in body size and nutritional requirements, food patch size and depletion rate, and social dominance status. Innovation, a process that plays an important role in the ecology and evolution of species, is considered an expression of behavioral flexibility in animals. Here we analyzed innovative problem-solving ability and performance enhancement through learning in the Olrog's Gull (Larus atlanticus), under controlled processes and experimental conditions. Trials were undertaken with nine adult individuals captured at a highly urbanized coastal area of Argentina. Each individual was presented with a Plexiglas box that could be opened by pushing or pulling two lids, each lid leading to a separated food reward. We measured problem-solving ability through consumption latency and the number of solved lids. As explanatory variables, we measured contact rate, as a measure of persistence, and the number of effective contacts. The results showed that the contact rate and effective contacts did not affect variables related to problem-solving ability during the first confrontation of the individuals with the closed box. Consumption latency decreased significantly throughout the trials, and with increasing contact rate and effective contacts. The number of solved lids increased through the trials independently of the contact rate and the total effective contacts with the box. Although persistence did not influence individuals' performance during the problem-solving test; this variable affected individuals' ability to solve the task throughout trials. Learning was evidenced by the decrease in the resolution time across experiments, suggesting that successful individuals improved their performance probably through a trial-and-error process. Evaluation of behavioral responses of a threatened seabird to a novel problem-solving task adds knowledge to previous field studies and provides a better understanding of the ability of individuals to adjust their foraging behavior in highly urbanized areas used during the non-breeding season. The time seabirds have to forage is restricted while breeding, as time at sea must be balanced against the need to take turns with the partner protecting the nest site or offspring, and timing constraints change once the breeding season is over. Combined geolocator-immersion devices were deployed on eleven Imperial Shags (four males and seven females) in Argentina (43°04′S; 64°2′W) in November 2006 and recovered in November 2007. During the breeding season, females foraged throughout the morning, males exclusively in the afternoon, and variability between individuals was low. Outside the breeding season, both sexes foraged throughout the day, and variability between individuals was high. Timing differences may be explained by higher constraints on foraging or greater demands of parental duties experienced by the smaller sex, females in this case. Sexual differences in reproductive role, feeding habits or proficiency can also lead to segregation in timing of foraging, particularly while breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

During winter, dusky dolphins ( Lagenorhynchus obscurus) were observed in coordinated diving apparently in a feeding activity, contrasting with the surface feeding observed during summer. The aim of this work consisted in analyzing the diving activity as an alternative foraging strategy in Argentine dusky dolphins, based on sequential analysis. The study area was Golfo Nuevo, located in Northern Patagonia, Argentina. Random transects were surveyed by a research boat from 2001 to 2007. During behavioral sampling, group members were observed continuously and the predominant activity was recorded at 2-min intervals. Six predominant activities were identified. Each 2-min interval was classified according to the activity at the previous interval (preceding activity), the activity at the interval (following activity), and the season (cold or warm). Z scores were calculated and then used to construct sequence diagrams. An association between diving and milling behavior was observed. This could be another foraging tactics different to the surface foraging sequences and this could be related with the distribution or abundance of preys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined the isotopic signatures (δC, δN) of adult body feathers from southern giant petrels Macronectes giganteus collected at two breeding colonies in Antarctica (Potter Peninsula and Cape Geddes) and one in southern Patagonia (Observatorio Island), as well as in whole blood collected from adults of both sexes at each Antarctic colonies and from chicks at Potter Peninsula. As body feather moult is a continuous process in giant petrels, feathers provide an integrated annual signal of an adult's diets and foraging habitats. In contrast, the stable isotope values of adult and chick blood are reflective of their diets during the breeding season. We found that sex-specific dietary segregation in adults breeding in Antarctica was notable during the breeding season (blood samples) but absent when examined across the entire year (feather samples). In addition, blood stable isotope values differed between chicks and adults, indicating that adults provision their offspring with a relatively higher amount of penguin and seal prey that what they consume themselves. This finding confirms previous work that suggests that chicks are preferentially fed with prey of presumably higher nutritional value such as carrion. Finally, based on isotopic differences between major oceanographic zones in the Southern Ocean, our data indicate population-specific differences in foraging distribution, with Antarctic populations move seasonally between Antarctic and subantarctic zones, while Patagonian populations likely forage in subtropical waters and in continental shelf habitats year-round.
