Selecting appropriate mapping units is vital for landslide susceptibility mapping as well as pattern investigation, given that various units-based analyses extensively control the prediction performances. This paper investigated the landslide development through the interpretation and field surveys along the Yunling–Yanjing segment of the Lancang River in southeastern Tibet, and fulfil LSM with the consideration of 15 conditioning factors. Two grid unit methods (single-point and multi-point patterns) and two slope unit methods were comparatively analyzed for model training and mapping of landslide susceptibility via machine learning algorithms. The results suggest that the landslides are preferentially distributed in an elevation range of 2000–4000 m, in a slope range of 20–40°, a local relief range of 1000–2500 m, and southwest-oriented slopes. The data extracted by the multi-point method denotes a higher representation of landslide development features. All models possessed positive prediction ability for landslide susceptibility, and the multi-point method based on grid unit performed the best with the AUC exceeding 0.9. The best-performing models indicated that zones of high and very high susceptibility mainly distributed adjacent to the mainstem and some tributaries of the Lancang River. Furthermore, the distribution of "safety islands" (the slopes less prone to landslides) along National Highway G214 was reasonably illustrated as well, which provides a hazard predictability for such an important transportation corridor along the deeply-incised valley in the Lancang River. This study demonstrates a theoretical basis for the regional disaster prevention and mitigation for human activity, and provides methodological references for landslide susceptibility evaluation in similar mountainous areas over the world. As one of the most destructive geological disasters, a myriad of landslides has revived and developed in the Three Gorges Reservoir area under the combined action of various detrimental factors. Therefore, the pertinently regional landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) is of great significance for disaster prevention and mitigation. In this study, LSM is prepared by using a boosting-C5.0 decision tree model. Under the landslide verification of on-site investigations, the study area is divided into accumulation and rock areas, and a total of 12 impact factors are selected. TOL and VIF are employed to determine the multicollinearity among the impact factors. The independent training (80%) and validation (20%) datasets are constructed by random sampling for LSM. ANN, C5.0, and SVM are selected for comparative analysis. The results show that there is no rigorous multicollinearity among the impact factors proposed in this paper. The landslide susceptibility in the study area is divided into low, moderate, high, and very high. The highest susceptibility area distributes along the riverside where the landslide ratio is 37.05% in boosting-C5.0 model. Then the ROCs are expropriated to infer the accuracy of each model. The boosting-C5.0 performs the best with the largest area under the curve in both accumulation and rock areas, reaching at 0.991 and 0.990 in the validation sets, respectively. Finally, the composite modification of the 5 validation sets shows that the uncertainty of boosting-C5.0 is concentrated in the intermediate probability areas of susceptibility. This study reveals the feasibility of machine learning in landslide susceptibility assessment, which could provide a basis for the risk management and control of geological disasters. The great M ~ 8 1920 Haiyuan earthquake (HYEQ) was one of the largest and most deadly earthquakes in China in the last century, with ~ 234,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred within the Loess Plateau of northern China, where Quaternary loess deposits form a distinctive blanket across the landscape. Large regions of this loess cover experienced co-seismic landslides. Based on an analysis of the original disaster reports, field surveys, and satellite image interpretation, we have compiled the shaking effects of the earthquake, including the distribution of landslides, fatalities, and structural damage. Landslides triggered by the HYEQ (n > 7,000) are concentrated south of the Haiyuan fault, in a region that has both thick loess cover and long-term relief generated by the drainage network. This distribution is spatially separated from landslides triggered by other earthquakes. We find that in contrast to previous studies, the most important factor in the severe death toll of the HYEQ was the collapse of housing by ground shaking, including collapse of loess house-caves. Landslides were a secondary factor; although up to 32,000 deaths occurred in areas with intense landsliding. Based on the revised distribution pattern of landslides and damage (e.g., house collapses), we suggest that the isoseismal intensity IX line extends south of previous locations. We have also identified 126 dammed lakes created by co-seismic landslides, which form major modifications of this semi-arid landscape. The research methods in this paper, combining historical review, satellite image interpretation, and field validation of landslides, can be used as a reference for studies of other areas affected by historical earthquakes and co-seismic landslides, elsewhere in the Loess Plateau and beyond. Most previous studies on the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of landslides focused on the probability of slope failure at the pre-failure stage and adopted empirical models for consequence analysis. The conventional approaches simplify the relationship between the pre-failure state and the post-failure behavior and cannot reasonably account for the effects of uncertainty on the entire landslide process. In this paper, an efficient QRA method that involves the direct simulation of the entire landslide process is proposed. A QRA formula that considers the probability of only those landslides that can impact the element at risk is used. The coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian method is used to simulate the entire landslide process and to identify slopes that can impact the element at risk and determine the failure consequences. The subset simulation method is adopted to efficiently estimate the probability of landslide impact, and parameter uncertainty is considered. Two case histories of landslides are investigated. First, the 2011 Baqiao loess landslide in Xi'an, China, is investigated, and the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the conventional approaches. Second, the proposed method is applied to assess the risk of the 2015 Ganjingzi landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir. The effects of the risk mitigation works are also discussed. Rapid detection of landslides using remote sensing images plays a key role in hazard assessment and mitigation. Many deep convolutional neural network-based models have been proposed for this purpose; however, for small-scale landslide detection, excessive convolution and pooling process may cause potential texture information loss, which can lead to misclassification of landslide target. In this paper, we present a novel UNet model for the automatic detection of landslides, wherein the reversed image pyramid features (RIPFs) are adapted to mitigate the information loss caused by a succession of convolution and pooling. The proposed RIPF-Unet model is trained and validated using the open-source landslides dataset of the Bijie area, Guizhou Province, China, wherein the precision of the proposed model is observed to increase by 3.5% and 4.0%, compared to the conventional UNet and UNet + + model, respectively. The proposed RIPF-Unet model is further applied to the case of the Longtoushan region after the 2014 Ms.6.5 Ludian earthquake. Results show that the proposed model achieves a 96.63% accuracy for detecting landslides using remote sensing images. And the RIPF-Unet model is also advanced in its compact parameter size; notably, it is 31% lighter compared to the UNet + + model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Landslides are common occurrences along Chinese rail routes. Accordingly, the accurate determination of sliding-surface locations and the underlying causes become critical from the landslide-disaster-management and loss-mitigation viewpoints. In this study, the landslide in the K66 section of the Jiheng Railway (installed in Jinggangshan City, Jiangxi, China) was investigated. The causative factors and characteristics of the landslide were analyzed using geophysical methods as well as drilling and monitoring techniques. The results reveal that a combination of the transient electromagnetic method and electrical resistivity tomography can be used to identify the location of water-rich landslide-prone regions. When combined with the drilling information, these results reveal the tendency of landslide occurrence in regions comprising strongly weathered carbonaceous shale. Moreover, an uneven slope deformation is observed along the railway line. The seepage of surface water into the slope is revealed as the primary cause of landslides. This is because the reduced strength of the strongly weathered carbonaceous shale facilitates the formation of sliding surfaces. This paper presents a comprehensive survey plan for landslides occurring along railway routes. Furthermore, an assessment of the risk of future landslide occurrences in the investigation area is presented, thereby providing an appropriate reference for landslide prevention and loss mitigation. Giant landslides can cause significant damage to their dynamic runout processes. Understanding the mechanics of the runout process is essential for landslide risk assessment and mitigation design. This paper investigates the runout process of the 1.16 × 109 m3 giant Daguangbao landslide triggered by the 2008 Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake. The Daguangbao landslide is a typical bedding-plane slide and the properties of basal sliding surface play a key role in the runout behaviors of the landslide. The material point method (MPM) is adopted as a numerical tool of the simulations. A thermal-based velocity-weakening friction law is used to simulate the contact between the sliding body and the basal sliding surface. A strain-softening constitutive model is used to evaluate the damages inside the landslide body and their effects on the runout behaviors of the landslide. Numerical results reveal that landslide mass slides along the bedding-plane as a whole body initially and then disintegrates during the runout process. The calculated duration of sliding is 64 s and the maximum velocity reaches 60 m/s. The friction coefficient of the slip surface decreases sharply as the landslide body starts to move, and a steady-state friction coefficient μ ≈ 0.06 is reached when the velocity exceeds approximately 20 m/s. Friction degradation of the slip surface shows a sensible influence on the final runout distance and the depth of the deposit zone. Landslide susceptibility map (LSM) provide useful tool for decision makers in hazard mitigation concerns. In the present paper, a novel hybrid block-based neural network model (HBNN) for the purpose of producing high-resolution LSM was developed. This hybrid approach was found through the mixture of expert modular structures and divide-and-conquer strategy incorporated with genetic algorithm (GA). The introduced HBNN then was applied on southern part of Guilan province (north of Iran) using 14 causative factors covering topographic and geomorphologic features, and geological and tectonical factors as well as hydrology, land data, and climate conditions. The landslide inventory map was provided using a synergy work from monitored events, interpretation of aerial photographs, and carried out geotechnical investigations in the area as well as field surveys. To insight, the predictability of proposed HBNN was compared with two developed models using multilayer perceptrons (MLPs) and generalized feed forward neural network (GFFN). The generated LSM was validated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, statistical error indices, and sensitivity and weight analyses as well as monitored landslides. Based on the compared metrics, HBNN with 86.52% and 90.15% in prediction and success rate as well as 89.36% for precision-recall curve demonstrated more consistent tool for future landslide susceptibility zonation. The Loess Plateau of China is the most concentrated and largest loess area on Earth. Shanxi Province lies in the eastern margin of the Loess Plateau and is one of the regions with the worst serious soil erosion and most fragile ecological environment in the world. A large catastrophic landslide occurred on July 23, 2019, after a continuous heavy rainfall at Jichang (N 26°15′22.99″, E 104°40′6.33″), Shuicheng county, Guizhou province, China. This landslide had a maximum runout distance of 1295 m, a maximum falling height of 477 m between the highest point of the source area and the leading edge, and a maximum speed of 45.5 m/s. The 1.4 million cubic meters of debris instantly buried twenty-one buildings, destroyed six buildings, and resulted in 42 fatalities and 9 people missing. This paper analyzes the extent and mechanisms of initiation and runout distance of the landslide. The landslide occurred in the eluvial and deluvial accumulation of basalt, and its initiation mechanisms were different from the bedrock landslides that are typical of the interbedded soft and hard rocks in Guizhou and basalt landslides in Southwest China. The prolonged heavy rainfall, lush vegetation, and road construction played the roles in landslide initiation. Subsequently, the landslide can be divided into three sliding regions caused by the valley on both sides and the stepped terrain in the middle, and the valley topography enhanced the disaster intensity and reach. Slope instability phenomena such as mudslides represent a major geohazard in Brazil, which has caused devastation in many states and affected the lives of people, particularly in self-built settlements on steep slopes. This paper presents and discusses slope stability issues encountered in Caxias do Sul in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, which exemplifies the existing situation of landslide risk assessment in southern Brazil. Local geology and ground conditions of the area in relation to slope instability were reviewed and gaps in information required for mitigating risk were identified, such as inadequate geotechnical information and lack of full inspection and continuous monitoring of active landslides. Although risk assessment has been developed for the city and regarded as a fundamental management tool in the mitigation of landslide hazards, the study showed that the risk assessment works are outdated and not effectively considered for the development of the city. With significant unplanned urban expansion (where houses have been self-built on very steep terrains without geotechnical assessment of the ground and slope conditions), new geohazard mapping is essentially required. Landfills are the most popular means of disposing of construction solid waste owing to the low-cost, large treatment volume and strong adaptability. However, landfill collapses and landslides are common, posing a risk to lives and property. A catastrophic landslide, not triggered by heavy rainfall or earthquakes, occurred on December 20, 2015, at Hongao landfill in Guangming New district of Shenzhen, China. The collapsed waste soil flowed 1100 m down a slope with an elevation difference of 100 m. This catastrophic landslide is typical of long-runout disasters with high mobility, which result in great loss to life and property. In this paper, we focused on reproducing the flow processes and simulating the arriving area of the landslide at Hongao landfill using a full three-dimensional (3D) smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) method. A series of undrained ring shear tests were conducted to determine the viscosity coefficient for the numerical simulation. The calculated geometry of the landslide using the full 3D SPH method agreed well with the field data. Hence, the combination of ring shear tests and SPH method can be widely used to predict the dynamic behavior of potential landslides in landfills, to reduce or prevent similar disasters. This paper examines the public involvement processes contained within the Landslide Management Strategy for the District of North Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada. Following a fatal landslide in the Berkley neighborhood in 2005, the District of North Vancouver convened a community-based Natural Hazards task force to establish risk-tolerance criteria for natural hazards. This paper describes the community task force approach and evaluates it against four criteria for successful public involvement: representative participation; early involvement; information availability; and impact on policy. It is identified that the District could have incorporated a broader understanding of risk, allowing public perspectives to influence the initial framing of the risk issue before charging the Natural Hazards task force to arrive at quantitative risk-tolerance criteria. The District could also have sought to engage a somewhat more representative portion of the population to serve on the Natural Hazards task force, seeking to incorporate a broader set of public values and types of knowledge. Notwithstanding, the Natural Hazards task force successfully utilized social, legal, and scientific information for informed decision-making, and their recommended risk-tolerance criteria were enacted into policy by the District of North Vancouver as a result of the process. The paper also investigates the District's ongoing public involvement and education efforts with respect to landslide risks, considering information accessibility and its usefulness for increasing individual capacity and community resilience. Overall, the District's ongoing, dynamic approach to risk management promises to empower individuals and foster resilient communities in the aftermath of the tragic Berkley landslide. Landslide hazard or susceptibility assessment is based on the selection of relevant factors which play a role on the slope instability, and it is assumed that landslides will occur at similar conditions to those in the past. The selected statistical method compares parametric maps with the landslide inventory map, and results are then extrapolated to the entire evaluated territory with a final product of landslide hazard or susceptibility map. Elements at risk are defined and analyzed in relation with landslide hazard, and their vulnerability is thus established. The landslide risk map presents risk scenarios and expected financial losses caused by landslides, and it utilizes prognoses and analyses arising from the landslide hazard map. However, especially the risk scenarios for future in a selected area have a significant importance, the literature generally consists of the landslide susceptibility assessment and papers which attempt to assess and construct the map of the landslide risk are not prevail. Multi-platform remote sensing using space-, airborne and ground-based sensors has become essential tools for landslide assessment and disaster-risk prevention. Over the last 30 years, the multiplicity of Earth Observation satellites mission ensures uninterrupted optical and radar imagery archives. With the popularization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, free optical and radar imagery with high revisiting time, ground and aerial possibilities to perform high-resolution 3D point clouds and derived digital elevation models, it can make it difficult to choose the appropriate method for risk assessment. The aim of this paper is to review the mainstream remote-sensing methods commonly employed for landslide assessment, as well as processing. The purpose is to understand how remote-sensing techniques can be useful for landslide hazard detection and monitoring taking into consideration several constraints such as field location or costs of surveys. First we focus on the suitability of terrestrial, aerial and spaceborne systems that have been widely used for landslide assessment to underline their benefits and drawbacks for data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Several examples of application are presented such as Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), lasergrammetry, Terrestrial Optical Photogrammetry. Some of these techniques are unsuitable for slow moving landslides, others limited to large areas and others to local investigations. It can be complicated to select the most appropriate system. Today, the key for understanding landslides is the complementarity of methods and the automation of the data processing. All the mentioned approaches can be coupled (from field monitoring to satellite images analysis) to improve risk management, and the real challenge is to improve automatic solution for landslide recognition and monitoring for the implementation of near real-time emergency systems. Predicting the deformation and evolution tendency of landslides is essential to landslide disaster prevention and mitigation. At present, most of the proposed models for landslide displacement prediction belong to single models. It is difficult to accurately describe the deformation and evolution law only by a single model for the complexity of landslides and limitation of the models. In this paper, we presented an application of linear combination model with optimal weight in landslide displacement prediction. We took Huanlongxicun and Saleshan landslides in Gansu province of China as examples, firstly to build GM(1,1) and Verhulst models for displacement prediction of the two landslides; then build two linear combination models of the two landslides, on the basis of the combining theory with optimal weight and the prediction results of the GM(1,1) and Verhulst models. The results show that the prediction accuracies of the combining models are much higher than those of the single models for both Huanglongxicun landslide and Saleshan landslide. Therefore, the combining model with optimal weight is an effective and feasible method to further improve accuracy for landslide displacement prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This effort is made to develop a landslide hazard map and perform the kinematic slope instability analysis of the critical sections at the Dasu dam site and its reservoir area. The study area is located at the Indus River in the Kohistan District within the highly elevated Himalayan terrain. The fragile geologic setup and high tectonic activity make this region favorable to produce frequent slope failures and landsliding events. First, a regional level landslide inventory map was created using GIS and remote-sensing tools. For this a hill shaded topographic map was created by overlapping a topographic map on to a hillshade image extracted from satellite based PALSAR Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with 12.5 m spatial resolution in GIS environment. Numerous past landsides were delineated using the expert driven knowledge of anomalous topographic expression like, crenulated contours, divergent contours, isolated topographic knobs, extended topographic ridges and arcuate headscarf evacuation areas. Total 120 landslides were marked, later a field visit was carried out for the validation of this exercise. The overall efficiency of this work was 85% which indicates that the GIS and remote sensing tools utilized for this study are reliable and effective in producing regional landslide inventory maps. Moreover, the scanline surveys were conducted at few selected locations to generate discontinuities data for the evaluation of slope instability issues by using kinematic analysis in DIPS 7.0 software. The study successfully highlights the usefulness of GIS and RS tools and in combination with kinematic analysis for landslides hazard assessment for mega projects. The outcomes of this research could serve as a guide in risk assessment and mitigation work in future to stabilize the critical slopes near Dasu dam site and along its reservoir area. Seismic slope stability analysis at regional scale (e.g., landslide hazard mapping, infrastructure slope management) is essential in areas that are susceptible to earthquake. Analytical infinite slope model is well suited and widely used for regional analyses which involve hundreds and thousands of slopes. Use of infinite slope model implicitly assumes shallow translational failure mechanism. However, earthquake can also cause deep rotational failure, which is more destructive and should also be considered. This study aims to develop closed-form solutions that can be efficiently used for seismic slope stability analysis at regional scale considering deep rotational failure mechanism. The existing research is critically reviewed first, and their shortcomings are identified. In contrast to the conventional "two-step" approach, a more efficient and versatile "one-step" approach is proposed in this study. The "one-step" approach can be used to calculate factor of safety for pseudo-static analysis and yield coefficient for displacement-based seismic analysis. To consider the effects of uncertainty from soil properties and seismic loading, the "one-step" approach is further extended for probabilistic analysis and application is demonstrated through a case study. Assessing the hazard of potential landslides is crucial for developing mitigation strategies for landslide disasters. However, accurate assessment of landslide hazard is limited by the lack of landslide inventory maps and difficulty in determining landslide run-out distance. To address these issues, this study developed a novel method combining the InSAR technique with a depth-integrated model. Within this new framework, potential landslides are identified through InSAR and their potential impact areas are subsequently estimated using the depth-integrated model. To evaluate its capability, the proposed method was applied to a landslide event that occurred on November 3, 2018 in Baige village, Tibet, China. The simulated results show that the area with a probability of more than 50% to be affected by landslides matched the real trimlines of the landslide and that the accuracy of the proposed method reached 85.65%. Furthermore, the main deposit characteristics, such as the location of maximum deposit thickness and the main deposit area, could be captured by the proposed method. Potential landslides in the Baige region were also identified and evaluated. The results indicate that in the event of landslides, the collapsed mass has a high probability to block the Jinsha River. It is therefore necessary to implement field monitoring and prepare hazard mitigation strategies in advance. Landslide hazard mapping is essential for disaster reduction and mitigation. The hazard map produced by the spatiotemporal probability analysis is usually static with false-negative and false-positive errors due to limited data resolution. Here we propose a new method to obtain dynamic landslide hazard maps over the Wushan section of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area by introducing the ground deformation measured by the spaceborne Copernicus Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery collected from 9/30/2016 to 9/13/2017. We first determine the spatial probability of landslide occurrence predicted by the support vector machine algorithm. We also conducted the statistical analysis on the temporal probability of landslide occurrence under various rainfall conditions (0, 0–50, 50–100, and > 100 mm for the antecedent 5-day total). We initialize a preliminary landslide hazard map by combining the spatial and temporal landslide probabilities. Meanwhile, the ground deformation velocities during the representative dry and wet seasons can be extracted from multi-temporal interferometric SAR (MT-InSAR). Thereafter, the landslide hazard map can be finalized by an empirical assessment matrix considering both the preliminary landslide hazard map and deformation velocities. Our results demonstrate that false-negative and false-positive errors in the landslide hazard map can be effectively reduced with the assistance of the deformation information. The city of Ouro Preto, which is located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, has a long history of mass movements influenced by the regional geology, geomorphology, and anthropic activities, which have resulted in harmful consequences to the population. However, most of the studies conducted in the region are qualitative and are directly dependent on the experience specialists. The aim of this study was to analyse the landslide susceptibility in the urban region of Ouro Preto quantitatively by using discriminant analysis. The landslide inventory was obtained by using unmanned aerial vehicle images and fieldwork. ArcGIS 10.6 and R 3.5.1 software were used, and the following landslide predisposing factors were considered: slope angle, slope aspect, profile curvature, and topographic wetness index (TWI). As geological and geotechnical data are still scarce in the interior of Brazil, we only used data derived from topography to determine the effectiveness of these factors for analysing landslide susceptibility. The slope angle proved to be the factor that most differentiated unstable from stable terrain, followed by TWI. The other parameters were not as effective in differentiating the stability conditions. The model efficiency was 88.6%, the specificity was 93.3%, and the sensitivity was 85.0%. Also, the prediction and success curve were used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed landslides model, by using the area under the curve (AUC) criteria. It was shown that the AUC values 0.851 for testing and 0.838 for training indicate that the developed model provides an excellent prediction. The main contribution of this work is the demonstration of the effectiveness of using easily accessible data (derived from topography) for analysing landslide susceptibility with a multivariate statistical method. In this study, based on the frictional velocity-weakening law used in continuum modeling, an adapted Hertz-Mindlin contact model between particles and the ground surface is established to accurately simulate the landslide dynamics process. Moreover, the long-period seismic waves indicating the dynamic characteristics of large landslides are adopted to determine the computational parameters for the discrete element method (DEM). By combining the force-time functions obtained from the long-period seismic waves and numerical modeling, the dynamic parameters and reasonableness of the simulation results of the first Baige landslide on October 11, 2018, in eastern Tibet, China, have been validated. The friction coefficient obtained in this study is also in agreement with the relationship between the volume and friction coefficients reported in the literature. Taking the same model and parameters, the dynamic process leading to the second Baige landslide on November 3, 2018, is analyzed. The modeled profile and position of the maximum thickness of the deposits arising from the two landslides both match the observations well. In the context of circular high steep slopes within a 500-m aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST) site in Pingtang, Guizhou Province in southwest China, a pertinent small-area karst landslide risk assessment is carried out based on geographic information system and fuzzy analytical hierarchy process. Results show the following: (a) The AUC value of hazard assessment is 0.826, which means a good adaptability and a relatively higher accuracy, and the AUC value of risk assessment is 0.803, which means the accuracy of landslide risk assessment is within acceptable level. (b) The slopes of FAST area are generally at the medium or low-hazard level, with high-hazard region accounting for only 3.17% of the total area. High-hazard regions are primarily found in two locations, one is located in nearby the Guangmingding slope where the dangerous rock masses were basically cleared away, the other is located in nearby feed tower 5H where potentially unstable rock masses were reinforced to improve the stability of slope. (c) High-vulnerability area of FAST accounts for approximately 43.62%. As a direct result, the high-risk area of FAST site accounts for 34.36% based on the overlap of vulnerability and hazard. The high risk is concentrated in the surrounding areas such as the feed tower, support pillar, and telescope mirror, and the high-risk area overlaps most of the fault fracture zone in the study area. Considering the ever-increasing landslide incidences in Indian Himalayas, a methodology has been presented to assess the risk to buildings constructed in the landslide-prone areas. Since landslide is a dynamic phenomenon, an inter-disciplinary approach is required for the assessment of elements at risk (buildings in this case). Therefore, a novel remote sensing and GIS-based semi-quantitative technique has been developed by integrating the concepts of landslide susceptibility zonation (LSZ), physical vulnerability (PV) and the proximity (Prox) of buildings from the influence zone (i.e. LSZ and drainage channels). In order to understand the acceptability of risk, the landslide risk (LR) has been categorized into three risk classes as class I (low risk), class II (moderate risk) and class III (high risk). This study aims to develop a systematic and easy to adopt methodology for hilly terrains of India in a scenario of historical data scarcity and also in line with the codal provisions of the country as well as the geographical conditions. The developed methodology is implemented in a test site of Gopeshwar Township, Chamoli District Headquarter, Uttarakhand State of India, covering an area of 8.39 km2 situated in the upper Alaknanda valley. This study will be useful in increasing the safety aspects of the infrastructures and lives and also for strategic governance of developmental activities in the times ahead, especially in developing countries. A bathymetric survey of Harrison Lake in southwest British Columbia revealed deposits of three large landslides on the lake floor. The blocky and flow-like surface morphology of the deposits suggests rapid emplacement from subaerial sources. The multibeam survey, together with a subbottom acoustic survey, allowed us to estimate deposit volumes of 2.4 Mm3, 1.3 Mm3, and 0.2 Mm3 for the Mount Douglas, Mount Breakenridge, and Silver Mountain landslides, respectively. The large volumes and inferred rapid emplacement of the Mount Douglas and Mount Breakenridge landslides suggest they were tsunamigenic. Because people live along the shoreline of Harrison Lake, our discovery and characterization of these landslide deposits and their tsunami-generating potential form an important foundation for further landslide-tsunami hazard analysis in the region. Uatzau basin in northwestern Ethiopia is one of the most landslide-prone regions, which characterized by frequent high landslide occurrences causing damages in farmlands, non-cultivated lands, properties, and loss of life. Preparing a Landslide susceptibility mapping is imperative to manage the landslide hazard and reduce damages of properties and loss of lives. GIS-based frequency ratio, information value, and certainty factor methods were applied. The landslide inventory map was prepared from detailed fieldwork and Google Earth imagery interpretation. Thus, 514 landslides were mapped, and out of which 359 (70%) of landslides were randomly selected keeping their spatial distribution to build landslide susceptibility models, while the remaining 155 (30%) of the landslides were used to model validation. In this study, six factors, including lithology, land use/cover, distance to stream, slope gradient, slope aspect, and slope curvature were evaluated. The effects of the landslide factor of slope instability were determined by comparing with landslide inventory raster using the GIS environment. The landslide susceptibility maps of the Uatzau area were categorized into very low, low, moderate, high and very high susceptibility classes. The landslide susceptibility maps of the three models validated by the ROC curve. The results for the area under the curve (AUC) are 88.83% for the frequency ratio model, 87.03% for certainty factor, and 84.83% of information value models, which are indicating very good accuracy in the identification of landslide susceptibility zones of a region. From these resulted maps, it is possible to recommend, the statistical methods (Frequency Ratio, Information Value, and Certainty Factor Methods) are adequate to landslide susceptibility mapping. Possibilities of using radar polarimetry methods for identifying landslide zones are analyzed. The transformation of the dominant mechanism of signal scattering by the reflecting surface was used as a key feature of landslide zones. The polarimetric data from the PALSAR-2 radar of the ALOS-2 satellite are processed using the Freeman–Durden and Cloude–Pottier decompositions at four test sites selected in the region of the landslide caused by the collapse of the bank of the Bureya River. It is found that the results of decompositions are consistent with each other; however, in some areas there are significant differences due to the specific features of the basic model assumptions. It is shown that, before the descent of the landslide masses, three main mechanisms of radar signal scattering existed in the analyzed region: single surface, volumetric, and double scattering. After the collapse, this area was dominated by single scattering characteristic of the reflective surface with large-scale irregularities free of vegetation, due to which the landslide descent zone can be confidently recognized. Rwanda as a landlocked country has been recurrently facing tremendous and devastating landslides having serious impacts on the environment and socioeconomic development. Analyzing landslide susceptibility and its influencing factors could ease landslide disaster control and, hence, contributes to environmental sustainability. Unfortunately, detailed information on influencing factors per respective classes and their level of correlation to the probability of landslide occurrence have not been fully analyzed in Rwanda. The purpose of this study is to reveal the spatial correlation between landslide occurrence and different classes of influencing factors using the frequency ratio (FR) approach with geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing techniques. Initially, a landslide inventory map was prepared using 423 landslide locations that were randomly split into 75% of training datasets (318 points) and 25% (105 points) to validate the model. A multicollinearity analysis was performed among ten influencing factors using the tolerance and variance inflation factor method. These factors include elevation, slope, aspect, distance to roads, distance to rivers, the normalized difference vegetation index, land use land cover, stream power index, rainfall and soil texture. The analysis revealed no multicollinearity among these factors, and therefore, all of them were suitable for modeling process. The FR model evaluated the relationship between landslide incidence and influencing factors in their respective classes and then generated the landslide susceptibility map using GIS which revealed the western, northern and some parts of southern province as the most susceptible areas owing to the slope, LCLU, rainfall and elevation as the main influencing factors. The generated susceptibility map was validated using the area under curve which portrayed 81.2% and 84.6% for success and prediction rate, respectively. To conclude, the results of this study are essential for future initiatives regarding landslide risk reduction toward sustainability in Rwanda. The resilience of communities and nations is a necessary condition for sustainable development. Building resilience, however, is not always a straightforward process and requires joint efforts, an all-of-society approach. Thus, the commitment, goodwill, knowledge, experience, and resources of all stakeholders contributing to disaster risk reduction (DRR) are crucial. In UNDRR's Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments online platform, the work of all stakeholders can be showcased and tracked. Using novel data from this platform, this article presents descriptive information about the types of commitments made by stakeholders working on landslides. Results suggest that landslide is the third most covered hazard. Commitments working on this hazard have a more balanced distribution of global, regional, and local actions as compared with the whole sample. Also, landslide commitments tend to display higher levels of collaboration (as measured by the number of organizations involved) and longer duration (a commitment will last 7.6 years on average). Common issues being addressed include capacity development, risk management, and community-based DRR. When looking at specific regions and countries, there are opportunities for increased partnerships and effectiveness in topics such as knowledge sharing and technology solutions. The systemic nature of risks is increasingly apparent, and this article may stimulate further studies analyzing complexity and the joint action of all stakeholders committed to accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework. Landslides are dangerous and destructive geomorphic processes that cause annual damage to human infrastructure or even loss of life. As recovery is very costly, knowledge of past landslide activities, a detailed analysis of triggers and prediction of future landslide development are important. Dendrogeomorphic (tree-ring-based) dating is the best solution of chronological data obtaining in forested areas, where trees annually produce increment rings. A moving landslide mass affects trees that grow on its surface. Trees respond to this influence in different ways that are recordable and subsequently visible in tree ring series. Thus, tree rings represent an ideal natural archive of past landslide behaviour. Depending on the tree species, the length of a landslide chronology can be several centuries with sub-annual resolution. Although dendrogeomorphic approaches have some limitations, provided data are unique because they represent insight into the past without the need for long-term monitoring. Nevertheless, trees as landslide archives are suitable for medium-magnitude events because excessively small movements can be disregarded and catastrophic movements destroy trees. This review introduces details regarding tree-landslide interactions, provides a historical overview of applied methods, presents and assesses methodical approaches and summarises basic advantages and contributions to the knowledge of landslide chronology, spatial behaviour and triggers. Finally, limitations, the potential for subsequent research directions and calls for future fundamental studies in new world regions are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
