Small-scale landslides that occur at unexpected locations and seasons can cause severe losses of life and property. Unusually, the Shidang landslide occurred prior to the rainy season in Jinkouhe County, Sichuan Province, China, resulting in 19 deaths and missing persons. In this paper, landslide characteristics and causes are revealed through a field investigation, laboratory experiments, and numerical calculations. The results show that the Shidang landslide was a small-scale landslide with a total volume of approximately 19500 m3, originating from hollow colluvial deposits. The geomorphological hollow above the landslide provided topographic conditions for the collection of subsurface runoff. Groundwater flow was transported downward along dolomite and accumulated in the area above shale, with a low conductivity. Groundwater table rise combined with the decrease in the soil strength led to landslide occurrence. Improper siting of residential areas and insufficient vigilance against post-rainfall landslides caused this tragedy. Considering the post-disaster lessons, it is strongly recommended that in the future, more attention should be given to the investigation of landslides triggered by groundwater, especially in determining landslide hydrological system boundaries. In mountainous areas where the developable space is limited, areas with hollow landforms are potentially at risk of geohazards. The aim of this paper is to report on fatal landslides resulting from two extraordinary storm events in January and February 2023, in Auckland, New Zealand, including the characteristics of the terrain, the site geology, and the storms. The January 27 Auckland Anniversary storm was from an "atmospheric river," dumping Summer's worth of rain (265 mm) in one day. This was the highest 24-h total on record, estimated a 1 in 200-year event, with a peak 2-min rainfall of 4.2 mm, coinciding with Friday's evening "rush hour." This led to widespread landsliding throughout Auckland, including a fatal landslide in Parnell, central Auckland. Notably, this occurred only meters from a similarly destructive landslide in 1997. With January 2023 Auckland's wettest January on record, and with the region still in a state of emergency, Tropical Cyclone Gabrielle crossed the region on February 13–14. This also caused widespread landsliding, including a fatal landslide at Muriwai on the west Auckland coast. Fatal landslides from the same escarpment had occurred in 1965, close to the February 13, 2023, fatal landslide. Taken together, both storm events caused > 140,000 landslides across the North Island, and flooding, making hundreds of people homeless, with damage estimates of > US$8.6 billion (3.4% of NZ's GDP). For future disaster risk reduction, attention should be paid to revising legislation and local planning, which currently allows people to legally build (and re-build) houses in landslide-prone areas of New Zealand. Landslide hazards have significant social, economic, and environmental impact. This work provides a critical review of the main existing literature using satellite data for mapping landslides. We created and examined an extensive bibliographic database from Web of Science (WoS) consisting in 291 outputs from > 1,000 authors who studied almost 700,000 landslides across all continents, for a total of 52 countries represented with China and Italy on top of the list with more authors. The outputs are equivalent to ~ 5% of the whole landslide-related production for the period 1996–2022, with a 600% increase in the number of papers after 2014 driven by the availability of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data. Analysis of the geographical location across the 66 different countries analysed shows that, within the total number of contributions, the satellite imagery was used to detect and map two main types of landslides: flows and slides. When specified in the manuscripts, the events have been triggered by rainfall (104 cases), earthquakes (32 cases), or both (17 cases). Slope instabilities in these areas were predominantly identified through manual detection (40%); but since 2020, the advent of artificial intelligence is suppressing all other techniques. Despite the undisputed progress of EO-based landslide mapping over the last 26 years, which makes it a consolidated tool for many landslide-related applications, challenges still remain for an effective and operational use of EO images for landslide detection and mapping, and we provide a perspective for future applications considering the existing and the planned SAR satellite missions. The reservoir impoundment can lead to accelerated deformation or reactivation of landslides, posing great threats to human lives and dam stability. The primary objective of this paper is to report the movement process of the Tuandigou (TDG) ancient landslide in the Baihetan dam area during reservoir impounding. Field investigation, borehole work, and site monitoring data are used to analyze the deformation behavior and triggering mechanism of the TDG landslide. It is found that the landslide deformation is closely related to the reservoir water level. After the reservoir water level reached the elevation of 810 m on October 12, 2022, the ground cracks continued to expand and gradually linked up, resulting in an accelerated deformation of the TDG landslide. Furthermore, the lithology in the study area also positively contributes to the slide movement. Based on these results, it is anticipated that the present research will provide guidelines for the early warning and control of the TDG landslide during and after the reservoir impounding. Length (L), width (W), and aspect ratio (ε, L/W) are elementary parameters widely adopted to characterize landslide geometry. Aspect ratio (ε) had been associated with the propagation of landslide along its movement path. However, current automatic measurement algorithms have not effectively considered the path of landslide movement, therefore only measure "path-independent" instead of "path-dependent" geometric parameters. This paper proposes a new approach for measuring path-dependent landslide L, W, and ε, in which path-dependent landslide L (Lpdep) is measured as the path distance from the landslide crown to its tip along the central line of landslide movement, and path-dependent landslide W (Wpdep) is measured as the weighted average lateral extent, across the central line of landslide movement. Specifically, Wpdep is calculated indirectly through dividing the landslide area by its length (A/Lpdep), and path-dependent landslide ε (εpdep) can be calculated by Lpdep2/A. The central line of landslide movement, i.e., landslide profile, is a three-dimensional (3D) polyline generated by the freely available software ALPA (Automatic Landslide Profile Analysis), and all these path-dependent geometric parameters can be measured either in 3D space or in two-dimensional (2D) space (in the horizontal plane). A case study is presented showing that path-dependent parameters can be effectively measured by the proposed profile-based approach, and could be significantly different from path-independent parameters especially for long-narrow and tortuous landslides. This paper also practically introduces new path-dependent definitions of landslide L, W, and ε, which inspires a worthwhile revisit of nomenclature. An overview shows that significant divergencies exist between current definitions of landslide L, W, and ε. In order to moderate the raised ambiguities and confusions, this paper accordingly suggests a "physically indicative" inclusive nomenclature somehow embracing all current representative definitions, and then appeals for constituting "type-specific" nomenclatures for each landslide type. However, some open questions still exist. The premise of ecological protection and sustainable development in coal mining areas is to find the law of surface damage, damage speed and damage mechanism, and then put forward preventive measures in a targeted manner. Taking the landslide in the coal mining mountain area of Shanxi Province as an example, this paper comprehensively integrates the disaster-pregnant environment and disaster information of the landslide, and constructs a multi-level model of the scene through the analysis of the landslide geology scene. The object features characterize the evolution process of landslides in terms of stratigraphic structure changes, surface changes, texture changes, shape characteristics, spectral characteristics, color characteristics, etc., the typical landslide types in Shanxi coal mining areas are verified by examples. The comprehensive consideration of geology, geographical environment, ecological environment, disaster environment and the damage of landslides to other important ground features, with the advent of the era of big data, various data obtained from air, space and ground monitoring can be applied to research. Through the cognition of landslide spatial scenes, it is helpful to understand the influence mechanism of external events on landslide activities, so as to better predict the spatial and temporal characteristics of landslide activities. In the present paper, an active landslide located to the southeast of the urban area of Alcoy (Alicante, Spain) is analysed. This landslide affects the N-340 road, as well as an area in which some industrial buildings dated from the fifteenth century and catalogued as Places of Cultural Interest are placed. This region is characterised by the existence of a steep relief composed of materials from the Miocene to the present, on which many gravitational movements are developed. The displacements have been analysed using high-resolution spotlight mode SAR images captured by the Spanish SAR satellite PAZ (which operates at X-band), which were processed by advanced differential SAR Interferometry (A-DInSAR). The behaviour of the instability has been determined using InSAR-derived time series displacement maps. Additionally, the study has been completed with a detailed geomorphological mapping at 1:2000 scale and an analysis of structural damage carried out in situ. The landslide was modelled in 3D, from a deterministic and probabilistic point of view, confirming the global instability of the area and the relationship of the landslide with rainfall and the construction of a new road. The integration of all this information obtained and its subsequent analysis has made possible to precisely define the extension of the instability, its kinematics, and to identify the main triggering factors. Landslide monitoring is a mandatory step in landslide risk assessment. It requires collecting data on landslide conditions (e.g., areal extent, landslide kinematics, surface topography, hydrogeometeorological parameters, and failure surfaces) from different time periods and at different scales, from site-specific to local, regional, and national, to assess landslide activity. In this analysis, we collected information on landslide monitoring techniques from 17 members of the Earth Observation and Geohazards Expert Group (from EuroGeoSurveys) deployed between 2005 and 2021. We examined the types of the 75 recorded landslides, the landslide techniques, spatial resolution, temporal resolution, status of the technique (operational, non-operational), time of using (before the event, during the event, after the event), and the applicability of the technique in early warning systems. The research does not indicate the accuracy of each technique but, rather, the extent to which Geological Surveys conduct landslide monitoring and the predominant techniques used. Among the types of landslides, earth slides predominate and are mostly monitored by geological and engineering geological mapping. The results showed that Geological Surveys mostly utilized more traditional monitoring techniques since they have a broad mandate to collect geological data. In addition, this paper provides new insights into the role of the Geological Surveys on landslide monitoring in Europe and contributes to landslide risk reduction initiatives and commitments (e.g., the Kyoto Landslide Commitment 2020). Landslides are one of the main geological disasters in the riparian zone of the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) in China, causing massive losses in terms of industrial and agricultural production and people's lives and property. Due to the difficulty of data collection and lack of facade information, the remote sensing methods currently used for landslide mapping and detection are insufficient. The current landslide information acquisition method is mainly based on visual interpretation and automatic computer classification from aerial orthophotographs, which is subjective and time-consuming and yields low accuracy. New shipborne photogrammetry has unique advantages in small and steep slope landslide detection. In recent years, the deep learning technology represented by convolutional neural networks (CNNs) exhibits more powerful feature learning ability in image recognition than traditional machine learning technology. Meanwhile, transfer learning can make the network suitable for small datasets through fine-tuning, which could transfer the parameters of the pretrained model to the new model in a certain way, thereby increasing the learning efficiency of the model. In this paper, the training of multiple deep learning models is realized through transfer learning, and automatic identification of landslides based on shipborne images is achieved through decision-level fusion. The experimental results show that through the integration of decision-level fusion and transfer learning, it performs well in the classification of landslides based on shipborne images. Landslides which occur at unexpected locations and times, and which have unrecognizable risk areas, often cause mass casualties. Despite there being few preceding landslides in the same season, the catastrophic Qijiaba landslide occurred in the new government-selected settlement of Wufu village, Sichuan Province, China, on September 5, 2021, killing three people and destroying 13 houses. In this paper, the landslide features and causes are discussed based on field investigations, remote sensing interpretations, and laboratory-based soil experiments. The results showed that it was a typical soil landslide within a geomorphic hollow of the slope with a volume of 20,230 m3, recurrence interval of at least 69 years, and runout distance of 137.5 m. This type of landslide is difficult to predict. The soil strength in the sliding surface decreased suddenly as the water content increased, and the soil's rich clay mineral and high clay particle contents determined its high mobility (Heim's ratio of 0.44). The occurrence time of the Qijiaba landslide lagged 1.3 days behind the peak rainfall, and the 2-day cumulative rainfall was a crucial factor in the landslide occurrence. Finally, the large water confluence area behind the main scarp was determined to be 3.9 times the area of the landslide itself, thereby providing abundant water conditions to induce failure. The factors underlying the casualties included inappropriate site selection, insufficient awareness of potential landslides, and failure to evacuate in time. Most previous studies on the quantitative risk assessment (QRA) of landslides focused on the probability of slope failure at the pre-failure stage and adopted empirical models for consequence analysis. The conventional approaches simplify the relationship between the pre-failure state and the post-failure behavior and cannot reasonably account for the effects of uncertainty on the entire landslide process. In this paper, an efficient QRA method that involves the direct simulation of the entire landslide process is proposed. A QRA formula that considers the probability of only those landslides that can impact the element at risk is used. The coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian method is used to simulate the entire landslide process and to identify slopes that can impact the element at risk and determine the failure consequences. The subset simulation method is adopted to efficiently estimate the probability of landslide impact, and parameter uncertainty is considered. Two case histories of landslides are investigated. First, the 2011 Baqiao loess landslide in Xi'an, China, is investigated, and the results of the proposed method are compared with those of the conventional approaches. Second, the proposed method is applied to assess the risk of the 2015 Ganjingzi landslide in the Three Gorges Reservoir. The effects of the risk mitigation works are also discussed. In this paper, the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is used to generate landslide susceptibility maps. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time the ABC algorithm is applied as a classifier on landslide susceptibility mapping. Twelve features are considered as inputs for the ABC model in this research work. These features contain redundant and correlated information. Therefore, normalization and dimension reduction are applied in the pre-processing stage. Three different normalization methods are investigated, i.e. minimum and maximum (Min-Max), mean standard deviation (Mean-SD), and median and interquartile range (Med-IQR). Two dimensionality reduction techniques, i.e., principal component analysis (PCA) and canonical variate analysis (CVA), are utilized to deal with high-dimensional information and eliminate correlated information in the data. In total, six different schemes of input data based on the three normalization methods and two techniques of dimension reduction are applied to train the ABC model. There are a total of 382 landslide incidents occurred at various locations on Penang Island, out of which 255 are selected for training and remaining 127 are used for the validation purpose of the model. The model classification accuracies and receiver of characteristics (ROC) curve are applied to evaluate the model's performance. The results show that the ABC model trained using Min-Max normalization and CVA scheme generates the best results among these six schemes. Long-runout landslides can be extremely hazardous and unpredictable. The prediction of long-runout landslides is challenging because it is unclear what factors control their mobility, and it is unclear how to best measure their runout given that they traverse changing topography. In this paper, we document the development and statistical evaluation of a Landslide Runout Score (LRS) system to predict short, medium, and long runout using a new mobility measure, the unitless Runout Number L/A1/2 (where L is landslide length and A is landslide area). The Runout Number has previously been correlated to three geomorphological factors (planimetric curvature, sand content, and upslope contributing area normalized to landslide area), so the LRS uses these factors as inputs. These factors are readily calculated using geographic information systems (GIS) and publicly available data sources. The LRS system predicts runout categories (short, medium, and long) with one-vs.-all accuracies (i.e., percentage of correct predictions within a given class) of 75, 58, and 72%, respectively, for a total weighted accuracy of approximately 65%. The results of this work are summarized in a worksheet that can be used by geologists and engineers to develop preliminary predictions of landslide runout behavior, which can be incorporated into or used alongside regional-scale landslide hazard assessments. Aspect ratio is an elementary parameter widely adopted to characterize landslide geometry. Nevertheless, it in essence reflects an overall elongation of landslide only, and cannot reflect the variation of width along the central line of movement. This paper proposes the new concept "landslide longitudinal shape" for complementing the landslide aspect ratio, and develops the methodology for interpreting it based on generation and analysis of the landslide profile. Relative width change and relative width fluctuation are defined as parameters quantitatively describing landslide longitudinal shape, and five different types of shape (rectangle, widening, narrowing, spindle, and hourglass) are predefined for qualitatively classifying it. A case study showed that landslide longitudinal shape can provide additional information and therefore is a complement to the aspect ratio. Landslides with larger aspect ratios (more elongated) are more possibly characterized by a narrowing overall varying trend and a stronger fluctuation of width. Landslides with similar longitudinal shapes of headscarp zones were found to have transition-deposition zones with diverse longitudinal shapes, which is caused by diverse topographic confinements and forces governing motion. For an unconfined and laterally confined landslide in the study area, its transition-deposition zone is most likely to have a regular and narrowing longitudinal shape, respectively. Longitudinal shape is not just a geometric parameter, but can somehow help to understand motion constraints of landslides. It must be emphasized that the new longitudinal shape concept is not applicable to landslides that show a complex geometry that prevents a clear definition of a longitudinal profile. The paper describes the recent devastating landslide of Kotrupi, Himachal Pradesh in India which had claimed many human lives and properties along its course on 13 August 2017. This event was the third reactivation of the slide as per data available. The study for this landslide involves a preliminary investigation of the site and comparison of pre- and post-event slope stability analysis. Other than rainfall, the combined effect of differential weathering rate of the debris and soil layers, low material strength, and the presence of a fault zone was found to be the primary cause of instability. The analysis was carried out with the geotechnical investigation and numerical modeling with the help of finite element model-based Phase 2 simulator. The significant findings of this paper include numerical simulation of pre- and post-event slide as stated under unsaturated and saturated condition. When an active landslide is first identified in an artificial reservoir, a comprehensive study has to be quickly conducted to analyse the possible hazard that it may represent to such a critical infrastructure. This paper presents the case of the El Arrecife Landslide, located in a slope of the Rules Reservoir (Southern Spain), as an example of geological and motion data integration for elaborating a preliminary hazard assessment. For this purpose, a field survey was carried out to define the kinematics of the landslide: translational in favour of a specific foliation set, and rotational at the foot of the landslide. A possible failure surface has been proposed, as well as an estimation of the volume of the landslide: 14.7 million m3. At the same time, remote sensing and geophysical techniques were applied to obtain historical displacement rates. A mean subsidence rate of the landslide around 2 cm/year was obtained by means of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data, during the last 5 and 22 years, respectively. The structure-from-motion (SfM) technique provided a rate up to 26 cm/year during the last 14 years of a slag heap located within the foot of the landslide, due to compaction of the anthropical deposits. All of this collected information will be valuable to optimise the planning of future monitoring surveys (i.e. differential global positioning systems, inclinometers, ground drilling, and InSAR) that should be applied in order to prevent further damage on the reservoir and related infrastructures. Understanding the kinematics and triggers of a landslide is central to assessing the risk of a landslide. This understanding can be achieved through a robust instrumentation plan that addresses key factors such as meteorological conditions, groundwater conditions, and deformation trends and velocity. High-frequency landslide displacement measurements at multiple locations across a sliding mass allow for the evaluation of the impact of meteorological events in the short and long terms. Installation of a monitoring system that provides reliable and accurate high-frequency displacement data from multiple locations can be expensive, and thus, this approach is not commonly used. Single-frequency differential GNSS (dGNSS) provides a relatively low-cost alternative to achieve long-term monitoring goals at multiple locations within a landslide. Networks of single-frequency Geocube™ dGNSS units were installed at test sites at two slow-moving Canadian landslides: the Ten-mile landslide near Lillooet, BC, and the Chin Coulee landslide near Taber, AB. The Geocube system monitored surficial deformation every 60 s for the duration of the monitoring program (> 500 day) and achieved a precision in direct measurements characterized by a standard deviation of 10.5 mm or less. The quality of the collected data was compared to data provided by a high-end multi-frequency GMX 910 Leica GPS, installed at the Ripley landslide near Ashcroft, BC. The data collected from the Geocube systems revealed that displacement orientations and rates varied within each of the sliding masses. The application of multiple monitoring points provided a relatively low-cost method to evaluate the shape of the sliding shear surface and the causal factors driving movement at each site. A practical evaluation of cost-effective dGNSS systems that provide reliable information as required for enhanced understanding of landslide kinematics and the development of early warning systems is presented in this paper. The landslide mechanism and failure mode of the gently sloping Piedmont region are analyzed in Fangshan and Zhutoushan hills in the Nanjing area of Jiangsu Province, China. These hills are underlain by volcanic rocks and have a distinctive stratigraphic structure composed of fill or clay at the surface, coarse-grained soil or fully weathered rock in the middle, and highly or moderately weathered rock at the bottom. Landslides occurred during or after heavy rainfall, and the monitored displacements of the slope surface indicated that sliding had not stopped after a long period of continuous rainfall. Through monitoring of groundwater and simulation, we found that the low-permeability highly weathered rock can restrict the activity of the lower aquifer, resulting in a rapid rise of pore pressure and formation of confined water in response to rainfall, which can lead to slope failure. We discuss the mechanism and avulsed–drifted failure mode of the landslides considering seepage deformation and pressure balance. Landslides are common occurrences along Chinese rail routes. Accordingly, the accurate determination of sliding-surface locations and the underlying causes become critical from the landslide-disaster-management and loss-mitigation viewpoints. In this study, the landslide in the K66 section of the Jiheng Railway (installed in Jinggangshan City, Jiangxi, China) was investigated. The causative factors and characteristics of the landslide were analyzed using geophysical methods as well as drilling and monitoring techniques. The results reveal that a combination of the transient electromagnetic method and electrical resistivity tomography can be used to identify the location of water-rich landslide-prone regions. When combined with the drilling information, these results reveal the tendency of landslide occurrence in regions comprising strongly weathered carbonaceous shale. Moreover, an uneven slope deformation is observed along the railway line. The seepage of surface water into the slope is revealed as the primary cause of landslides. This is because the reduced strength of the strongly weathered carbonaceous shale facilitates the formation of sliding surfaces. This paper presents a comprehensive survey plan for landslides occurring along railway routes. Furthermore, an assessment of the risk of future landslide occurrences in the investigation area is presented, thereby providing an appropriate reference for landslide prevention and loss mitigation. Nowadays, the 3D modelling of surfaces is widely used to provide point clouds in geosciences. To study the evolution of landslides, many point clouds are available but post-processing can be very computationally demanding, especially to analyze their dynamics. This paper proposes automatic tools to identify areas with continuous motion and those with non-continuous motion using a new continuous motion indicator. Displacements of continuously moving areas are computed by two "displacements" methods (the image correlation method and the Gefolki differential optical flow method), which are compared. The evolution of non-continuous motion areas is quantified by a distance metric. The developed method is applied on two sites with different deformation mechanisms and evolution speeds to test the ability to show the 3D spatial evolution of landslides. The comparison with instrumental data shows a good concordance between the calculated data and the reference data. Landslide is a uniquely dynamic large-deformation process that can present serious threat to human lives and infrastructures. The natural soil properties often exhibit inherent spatial variability, which affects the landslide behavior significantly. This paper focuses on combined Monte Carlo simulation and three-dimensional (3D) dynamic large-deformation finite-element (LDFE) analysis using the coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian method to investigate the whole runout process of landslide induced by the earthquake in spatially varying soil. The results from LDFE analysis show that the mean value of runout distance in spatially varying soil is significantly higher than that of the deterministic value obtained from a homogeneous slope due to the slope failure developed along the weakest path in soils. The mean runout distance increases and converges with increasing slope length in 3D-LDFE stochastic analysis. The advantages and necessities of 3D-LDFE analysis were illustrated by comparing it with two-dimensional (2D) LDFE analysis of landslide in spatially varying soil. The results show that the calculated mean runout distance using 3D-LDFE method is at least 16.1% higher than that calculated using 2D-LDFE analysis. Finally, a linear regression formula was established to estimate the mean runout distance of landslide due to horizontal inertia acceleration. The Jianshanying landslide in Guizhou province, China, is a typical mining-induced landslide with its complex formation in karst mountainous area. However, the spatiotemporal deformation characteristics and failure mechanism are still unknown. In this paper, the surface deformation time series from 2017 to 2020 is firstly estimated by combining multi-temporal synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry and improved offset-tracking methods to overcome the difficulties caused by the large gradient surface deformation and surface material changes. Then, the spatiotemporal characteristics of Jianshanying landslide is analyzed in terms of line-of-sight (LOS) deformation with stacking InSAR method and two-dimensional (2D) deformation with improved SAR offset-tracking method. And the different deformation features between sliding body and surrounding areas are uncovered. Accordingly, we point out the "three-section" surface deformation model. We further analyze the deformation time series by considering the joint effects of rainfall and underground mining. Finally, we conceptualize the landslide failure mode for the Jianshanying landslide, which can be extended to the similar landslide in karst mountainous areas of southwestern China. Landslide failure time prediction is considered a challenging issue in landslide research. A significant goal of landslide research is to provide scientific and accurate prediction methods. In this paper, the short-term forecasting of landslides (STFL) model is proposed by analyzing landslide deformation characteristics in a known evolution process. The landslides on the southern slope of the West open pit mine (SSWOPM) in Liaoning province, northeast China, and Huangci in Gansu province, northwest China, were selected as the study cases. After pre-processing, which include eliminating abnormal data (t test), adding missing data (cubic spline interpolation), and smoothing noisy data (Savitzky–Golay filters), the displacement data are assembled to serve as the model's input parameters. The parameters of STFL can be obtained through the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm. Using the forecasting criterion, the time of failure of landslides can be predicted and determined. Forecasting results provide evidence that the STFL model can achieve an accurate prediction of landslide displacement (correlation coefficient R2 > 0.99). The forecasting results of the SSWOPM and Huangci landslides indicate that the forecasting failure time of the STFL model is March 10, 2014 and January 31, 1995, respectively, which are near the actual failure time compared with those obtained using the Verhulst model. Owing to the heavy rainfall, a landslide occurred at the Anqian Iron mine, at 18:00(UTC + 8) on November 24, 2019, in China. The landslide was about 3.0 × 104 m3 and caused damage to the road of transporting waste materials. Failure characteristics and the mechanism of this landslide were analyzed in this study. The landslide area was divided into three parts: the rear tension cracking area, the middle sliding deformation area, and the front colluvium area. A contact-free measuring technique using the new ShapeMetrix3D system was applied and 204 joints were analyzed based on equal-angle stereographic projection. Thus, a conceptual model of the mechanism of the landslide was constructed and the formation process of the landslide was divided into three stages: the first shearing and dislocation stage; the second sliding, front bulging, and rear tractive cracking stage; and the third local rock mass collapse and colluvium depositing stage. Numerical modeling was performed to discover the landslide mechanism by progressively reducing the shear strength of rock mass. The results showed that the original slope was stable, whereas heavy rainfall triggered the landslide, and the predicted failure surface matched closely the field investigations. The factor of safety obtained by real three-dimensional analyses was slightly higher than that obtained by plane problem analyses, and the difference was attributed to the three-dimensional effect of the landslide. Landslides are one of the devastating geohazards that cause extensive socio-economic and environmental damages on local, regional, and global scales. Previous studies based on digital media sources have attracted attention to the high fatal landslide rate in Turkey, at a continental or global scale; however, the preparation of a comprehensive and long-term database for Turkey has been neglected until today. To examine this data gap, we present a new database of fatal landslide events resulting in fatalities from 1929 to 2019, which has been compiled using Turkish national and local printed and digital media reports, academic papers, disaster, and city annual reports. The fatal database of Turkey (FATALDOT) shows that, in total, 1343 people were killed in 389 fatal landslide events. The spatiotemporal distribution of the fatal landslides highlighted increasing trends with reference to two distinct hotspot zones throughout the Eastern Black Sea and Marmara Region, mostly around Istanbul megacity. Our results show that there has been a significant uniformity between the number of fatalities and fatal landslides triggered by anthropogenic and natural factors over the past decade, indicating an increasing dominance of human activities in fatality rates. Our findings also, for the first time, remarked the potential signatures of the economic crisis and political steadiness on fatal landslide trends. Nevertheless, we conclude that the increasing rate of anthropogenic disturbances in urban and mountainous areas, together with regional variances in topography and climatic setting, is essential in governing the pattern of fatal landslides. Giant landslides can cause significant damage to their dynamic runout processes. Understanding the mechanics of the runout process is essential for landslide risk assessment and mitigation design. This paper investigates the runout process of the 1.16 × 109 m3 giant Daguangbao landslide triggered by the 2008 Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake. The Daguangbao landslide is a typical bedding-plane slide and the properties of basal sliding surface play a key role in the runout behaviors of the landslide. The material point method (MPM) is adopted as a numerical tool of the simulations. A thermal-based velocity-weakening friction law is used to simulate the contact between the sliding body and the basal sliding surface. A strain-softening constitutive model is used to evaluate the damages inside the landslide body and their effects on the runout behaviors of the landslide. Numerical results reveal that landslide mass slides along the bedding-plane as a whole body initially and then disintegrates during the runout process. The calculated duration of sliding is 64 s and the maximum velocity reaches 60 m/s. The friction coefficient of the slip surface decreases sharply as the landslide body starts to move, and a steady-state friction coefficient μ ≈ 0.06 is reached when the velocity exceeds approximately 20 m/s. Friction degradation of the slip surface shows a sensible influence on the final runout distance and the depth of the deposit zone. The great M ~ 8 1920 Haiyuan earthquake (HYEQ) was one of the largest and most deadly earthquakes in China in the last century, with ~ 234,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred within the Loess Plateau of northern China, where Quaternary loess deposits form a distinctive blanket across the landscape. Large regions of this loess cover experienced co-seismic landslides. Based on an analysis of the original disaster reports, field surveys, and satellite image interpretation, we have compiled the shaking effects of the earthquake, including the distribution of landslides, fatalities, and structural damage. Landslides triggered by the HYEQ (n > 7,000) are concentrated south of the Haiyuan fault, in a region that has both thick loess cover and long-term relief generated by the drainage network. This distribution is spatially separated from landslides triggered by other earthquakes. We find that in contrast to previous studies, the most important factor in the severe death toll of the HYEQ was the collapse of housing by ground shaking, including collapse of loess house-caves. Landslides were a secondary factor; although up to 32,000 deaths occurred in areas with intense landsliding. Based on the revised distribution pattern of landslides and damage (e.g., house collapses), we suggest that the isoseismal intensity IX line extends south of previous locations. We have also identified 126 dammed lakes created by co-seismic landslides, which form major modifications of this semi-arid landscape. The research methods in this paper, combining historical review, satellite image interpretation, and field validation of landslides, can be used as a reference for studies of other areas affected by historical earthquakes and co-seismic landslides, elsewhere in the Loess Plateau and beyond. As increased pore pressure due to rainwater infiltration is the primary triggering factor for landslides, rainfall is normally established as the first condition that allows definition of the predictability of their occurrence over the short term for a determined location. It is therefore common to propose landslide occurrence predictions based on awareness of accumulated background rainfall from historic data analysis. This paper proposes that landslide occurrence be predicted by quantitatively estimating their probabilities based on accumulated rainfall during a pair of time frames (e.g., 24 and 72 h) prior to the event, with selection determined by statistical dependence readings. This method was applied to the Quitandinha river basin region in the municipality of Petrópolis, Brazil, using background data from 2003 to 2009. It was observed that landslide occurrence presented the highest relevance level with the two accumulated rainfall periods of 24 and 96 h, and it was possible to estimate the probability of occurrence of at least one, three, or five landslides depending on the accumulated rainfall rates during these time frames. In a strong earthquake, not only a large number of coseismic landslides are triggered, but relaxation and cracks in the rocks and soils are induced, which make these rocks and soils vulnerable to instability during subsequent rainfall; thus, strong earthquakes always have long-term effects on landslides. The geo-hazards along the Zhaotong-Qiaojia road in the 2014 Ludian earthquake (Ms 6.5) of Yunnan Province, China, were investigated, and the Ganjiazhai giant landslide was chosen as a case study. First, using the limit equilibrium analysis and Newmark method, the critical seismic intensity of the landslide before the earthquake was evaluated. Secondly, the dynamic failure process of the landslide under the measured ground motion was simulated with the discontinuous deformation analysis method. Lastly, based on stress–seepage coupling analysis and precipitation data from Ludian meteorological station, the stability of the landslide during subsequent rainfall after the earthquake was predicted. The results show that the critical seismic intensity was within degrees VIII–IX, which is consistent with the results of the earthquake damage investigation. The dynamic failure process can be divided into four stages, and four scarps formed; the potential sliding zones during the subsequent rainfall were at the first scarp and the fourth scarp, and their critical rainfall amounts were 35–40 mm and 55–60 mm, respectively. In this paper, failure process simulation and stability prediction of the landslide before, during, and after the strong earthquake are presented, which provide analysis methods for the dynamic stability of landslides in the meizoseismal area. This paper focuses on the evaluation of temporal and spatial propagations of impulse waves using 3D numerical simulation-based models for a potential landslide area in the Tersun Dam reservoir, Northeast Turkey. The topographical model was created using Stereo Lithography files, and a drift-flux model was used to simulate the landslides. The wave generation was simulated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The Drift-Flux approach was selected, and a renormalization group-based k-ε turbulence model was used to create a fluid–solid coupled model. The results show that a 16.5-m impulse wave is created as a result of sliding material hitting the water at a velocity of 16.4 m/s. The wave will reach the opposite shore in 27.4 s, and the run-up height will reach up to 48.8 m. As the wave, with an average velocity of 11.6 m/s in the reservoir, propagates toward the dam body, its height will decrease, and a 3.7-m-high wave will hit the dam in 155 s. A validation analysis performed using empirical equations and laboratory model tests indicates small differences in the results. The main reason for these differences is that the evaluation of wave properties is independent of the type of mass movement in empirical methods. Multi-platform remote sensing using space-, airborne and ground-based sensors has become essential tools for landslide assessment and disaster-risk prevention. Over the last 30 years, the multiplicity of Earth Observation satellites mission ensures uninterrupted optical and radar imagery archives. With the popularization of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, free optical and radar imagery with high revisiting time, ground and aerial possibilities to perform high-resolution 3D point clouds and derived digital elevation models, it can make it difficult to choose the appropriate method for risk assessment. The aim of this paper is to review the mainstream remote-sensing methods commonly employed for landslide assessment, as well as processing. The purpose is to understand how remote-sensing techniques can be useful for landslide hazard detection and monitoring taking into consideration several constraints such as field location or costs of surveys. First we focus on the suitability of terrestrial, aerial and spaceborne systems that have been widely used for landslide assessment to underline their benefits and drawbacks for data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Several examples of application are presented such as Interferometry Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR), lasergrammetry, Terrestrial Optical Photogrammetry. Some of these techniques are unsuitable for slow moving landslides, others limited to large areas and others to local investigations. It can be complicated to select the most appropriate system. Today, the key for understanding landslides is the complementarity of methods and the automation of the data processing. All the mentioned approaches can be coupled (from field monitoring to satellite images analysis) to improve risk management, and the real challenge is to improve automatic solution for landslide recognition and monitoring for the implementation of near real-time emergency systems. This paper presents an analysis of the Hooskanaden Landslide, an earthflow, which experienced a dramatic surge event beginning on February 24, 2019, closing US Highway 101 near mile point 343.5 for nearly 2 weeks. This ~ 1 km long surge event resulted in horizontal displacements of up to 45 m and uplift of 6 m at the toe located on a gravel beach adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. The Hooskanaden Landslide, likely active since the eighteenth century, exhibits regular activity with a recurrence interval of major surge events of approximately every 20 years, transitioning from slow to relatively rapid velocities. During the 2019 event, maximum displacement rates of approximately 60 cm/h were observed, slowly decreasing to 15 cm/h for a sustained period of approximately 2 weeks before the eventual return to baseline conditions (< 0.02 cm/h). This paper reports on the investigation of the old landslide body on which the necropolis of Abakainon, an Italian archaeological site, was built about 2400 years ago. This site is located in a geologically complex area of northeastern Sicily, where active tectonics has strongly modified the morphological landscape, as testified by the meandering path of watercourses, widespread presence of paleosurfaces, and deviations of crest line. Previous studies have hypothesized that the necropolis, suddenly destroyed by a catastrophic event in historical times, could have been built on an old landslide body. This represents the starting point of this paper, focused on geomorphological analysis and geophysical surveys, which allowed discovering peculiar elements in support of the landslide theory. In particular, the elaboration of a Digital Terrain Model allowed locating the main morphostructural elements, thus highlighting how the occurrence of landslides in the study area is strongly linked to recent tectonics. Passive seismic surveys, carried out through the acquisition of ambient noise, allowed detecting the presence of impedance contrasts, which were associated to peculiar features, such as the landslide body itself. Moreover, local strong directional effects testify the presence of faults, affecting even the necropolis area. Such results, further corroborated by the outcomes of an electrical resistivity survey, lay the foundations for interesting consideration on the possible cause of the destruction of this site, probably related to the occurrence of a historical earthquake in the first century AD. The Fourth World Landslide Forum (WLF4) was held in Cankarjev dom-Cultural and Congress Centre in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from 30 May to 2 June 2017, with over 600 participants from 49 countries, 5 international organizations, and 4 United Nations organizations-scientists, engineers, researchers, students, experts, politicians, and other decision makers working in the area of landslide risk reduction. Well, over 100 of them were (post)graduate students. The WLF4 as a triennial event was a contribution of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) to the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. This article reports on the main WLF4 events and outcomes of the forum. Altogether, close to 400 peer-reviewed full papers, including keynote, invited, and other submitted papers, were published by Springer Nature in five volumes with a total of over 3600 pages. During the WLF4, 20 new World Centres of Excellence on Landslide Risk Reduction for 2017-2020, IPL Awards for Success, Varnes Medals, Best Paper Awards, and other means of recognitions were handed out to the recipients. The WLF4 participants have adopted the '2017 Ljubljana Declaration,' and drafted the 'Kyoto 2020 Commitment,' in order to stress their strong and joint commitment for the ISDR-ICL Sendai Partnerships 2015-2025 on its way towards the Fifth World Landslide Forum to be held in November 2020 in Kyoto, Japan. Landslides have environmental, social, and economic impact in the Brazilian Atlantic coast (Serra do Mar). In addition to meteorological, geological, and geomorphological settings, mineralogical and pore space heterogeneities in soil covers are considered important characteristics that can influence landslide occurrence. Since soil covers are very clayey, the evaluation of macro- and micromorphological soil features (soil structures, soil materials, and pores) resulted by mass movement during slope instability is difficult. This field of investigation practically does not exist in the Serra do Mar. The objective of this paper is to analyze the soil cover in a toposequence to identify macro- and microscopic soil features resulted from landslide processes, and assess the role of pedogenesis on landslide development. Macro- and micromorphological approaches were used to study the architecture of the soil cover and soil was sampled to determine chemical and mineralogical composition by XRF and XRD. Undisturbed clods were used to determine pore size and pore compartment by mercury porosimetry. It was recognized a brecciated and an undulating parallel-striated fabric. Both features were generated from mass movement and were unclear in the clayey horizons in the bottom of the toposequence. In this level, the occurrence of mottles suggesting short-term soil saturation and the presence of micropores < 1000 nm in soil could be the factors that drive soil movement downslope. A large catastrophic landslide occurred on July 23, 2019, after a continuous heavy rainfall at Jichang (N 26°15′22.99″, E 104°40′6.33″), Shuicheng county, Guizhou province, China. This landslide had a maximum runout distance of 1295 m, a maximum falling height of 477 m between the highest point of the source area and the leading edge, and a maximum speed of 45.5 m/s. The 1.4 million cubic meters of debris instantly buried twenty-one buildings, destroyed six buildings, and resulted in 42 fatalities and 9 people missing. This paper analyzes the extent and mechanisms of initiation and runout distance of the landslide. The landslide occurred in the eluvial and deluvial accumulation of basalt, and its initiation mechanisms were different from the bedrock landslides that are typical of the interbedded soft and hard rocks in Guizhou and basalt landslides in Southwest China. The prolonged heavy rainfall, lush vegetation, and road construction played the roles in landslide initiation. Subsequently, the landslide can be divided into three sliding regions caused by the valley on both sides and the stepped terrain in the middle, and the valley topography enhanced the disaster intensity and reach. Previous studies about probabilistic back analysis for shear strength parameters of landslides generally adopted a fixed slip surface. This setting may lead to unreliable results due to the uncertainty of slip surface location speculated by limited observations. Based on Bayes' theorem, this paper proposes a probabilistic framework for the back analysis of landslides considering slip surface uncertainty. The posterior distributions of shear strength parameters in Bayesian inference are solved by Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation method. To improve computational efficiency, a response surface function based on extreme learning machine is constructed to approximate the relationship between shear strength parameters and the corresponding factor of safety and critical slip surface. A synthetic slope, for which the actual shear strength parameters and slip surface are known, is used to compare the proposed and traditional methods. The effects of measurement error of slip surface and prior distribution of shear strength parameters on probabilistic back analysis results are also investigated. Results show that the shear strength parameters obtained from traditional probabilistic back analyses neglecting slip surface uncertainty significantly deviate from actual values, and are greatly affected by prior mean of shear strength parameters. The proposed method performs better than traditional method and is less affected by the prior distributions of shear strength parameters, and the smaller the measurement error of slip surface, the higher the Bayesian back analysis accuracy. The Zongling landslide (Nayong, Guizhou, China) is dominated by a unique karst landscape area with many landslide masses. In this paper, an improved Interferometric Point Target Analysis (IPTA) method is proposed to identify and monitor the Zongling landslide. In this method, the Anderson-Darling test is applied to distributed scatterer (DS) selection, and DS and persistent scatterer (PS) are combined to improve the density of measurement points in vegetation area. Moreover, this method is also characterized by the appropriate combination of differential interferograms produced by a small baseline subsets and the employment of the phase triangulation algorithm to estimate the optimal phase. Combining 105 scenes of C-band Sentinel-1A ascending and descending data acquired during 2014–2018, the method is applied to retrieve time series displacement for the large-scale landslide in Zongling Town. Finally, three accelerating landslides are identified from our result, which is consistent with ALOS PALSAR differential interferometry synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) results and field investigation. The influencing factors and deformation mechanism of the Zongling landslide are also analysed. Mechanical parameters of rock mass in mining engineering feature the characteristics of spatial variability and time decay, and it plays an important role in the slope stability analysis. The mechanical behaviour of rock engineering in low in-situ stress condition is highly affected by the rock mass quality. In this paper, the distribution of geological strength index (GSI) was obtained by geostatistics-based methods to determine the spatial variability of mechanical parameters. Moreover, mechanical parameters of rock masses in open-pit mine are deteriorating continuously in the mining process. A damage model using microseism (MS) data was proposed to describe the time decay of mechanical parameters. Additionally, the dynamic programming method was used to search the rough critical slip surface and factor of safety considering the heterogeneous mechanical parameters. An example was further employed to demonstrate these proposed methods in the Dagushan open-pit mine. The results indicated that incorporation of spatial variability and time decay into mechanical parameters leaded to a fundamental change in the slope stability. Identifying the instability areas provides useful information about the recognition of the vulnerable zones and, thus, helps to potentially decrease the harm to the infrastructure and the hazard conditions in inhabited areas. In this regard, morphometric parameters and tectonic setting are widely employed in mapping, modelling and understanding of instability processes. The present study is aimed to analyse the combined effects of slope morphometry (slope gradient, slope curvature, local relief), of lithology, of drainage density and of tectonic setting on the distribution of landslides. The study area is located in the Mesima Basin that lies in the central part of the Calabria region (southern Italy). The morphometric analysis was carried out by geographic information system (GIS) techniques, whereas the geomorphic attributes were computed by a digital elevation model (DEM). The recognized landslides and faults were digitized and stored in a GIS geo-database that allowed the construction of relative density maps. A total of 1 991 landslides and 231 tectonic lineaments were recognized and mapped. The distribution of the collected data suggests that the occurrence of landslides is not random. Indeed, the research highlights as the lithology, the fault density, the slope gradient and the local relief play an important role in determining the landslide occurrence. The used approach is aimed to reinforce the knowledge about the validity of the application of morphometric analysis to the landslide susceptibility. The Mesima Basin is a poorly studied area of the Calabria from a geomorphological viewpoint. Indeed, previous researches focused mainly on geological and on tectonic aspects, as well as on instability phenomena in the Mesima surroundings. Thus, this paper takes a step forward with respect to previous studies because it augments the knowledge about the relationship between faults, morphometric features and the occurrence of landslide. This paper deals with geosynthetics-reinforced barriers conceived as protection works against debris avalanches, which are a dramatic threat for human life and structures. This kind of barrier is intended to be deformable under the impact and is here analysed for various cases of landslide velocity, impact duration and peak impact pressure. The latter is the sum of a dynamic component (velocity-dependent) and a static component (height-dependent). The barrier is conceived as a multilayered embankment, reinforced by geogrids wrapped around the facing. Both static and dynamic stress–strain analyses are performed through a commercial FEM code (Plaxis v. 8.5) to simulate the deformation mechanisms and the ultimate limit states. Four geometries of the barrier and four combinations of the materials are considered. The core of the barrier is made of coarse-grained material modelled as elastic-perfectly plastic with a non-associative Mohr–Coulomb yield criterion. The facing is 60° to 80° steep and sustained by an iron mesh here simulated as an elastic beam element. The geogrids are modelled as elastic traction-resistant elements. Frictional interfaces are considered at the soil–geogrid and the soil facing contacts. The displacements of the inner points and the global behaviour of barriers are evaluated over time. Out of four newly defined deformation mechanisms, local, global, combined or compound, only three principal scenarios are outlined: i) a global displacement along the base of the barrier, ii) a local yielding of soil combined with a global displacement of the barrier, or iii) a shifting of the reinforced layers along the geogrids with an acceptable performance of the whole barrier. In March 15, 2019, a small-scale loess landslide occurred at Zaoling, Shanxi Province, China, destroying several buildings and killing 20 people. Based on a digital orthophoto map (DOM) and digital elevation model (DEM) derived from Dajiang Pro4 UAV aerial images, coupled with field investigations, this paper describes the geometric features of this slope failure and analyzes its possible inducing factors. Results show that this landslide has a circular chair shape with a sliding direction of 355°. The total projected area of the landslide is 11,800 m2, in which the source is 9880 m2, and the main scarp is 1995 m2. The volume of the source material and loose deposit debris are about 10 × 104 m3 and 12 × 104 m3, respectively. Our research suggests that the inducing factors of this event may include the low strength and structure of the loess under a wet condition, special landforms of the slope, and human activities such as water discharge from a nearby bath center building and coal mining. In this paper, we examine the influence of the 27 October 2012, Mw 7.8 earthquake on landslide occurrence in the southern half of Haida Gwaii (formerly Queen Charlotte Islands), British Columbia, Canada. Our 1350 km2 study area is undisturbed, primarily forested terrain that has not experienced road building or timber harvesting. Our inventory of landslide polygons is based on optical airborne and spaceborne images acquired between 2007 and 2018, from which we extracted and mapped 446 individual landslides (an average of 33 landslides per 100 km2). The landslide rate in years without major earthquakes averages 19.4 per year, or 1.4/100 km2/year, and the annual average area covered by non-seismically triggered landslides is 35 ha/year. The number of landslides identified in imagery closely following the 2012 earthquake, and probably triggered by it, is 244 or an average of about 18 landslides per 100 km2. These landslides cover a total area of 461 ha. In the following years—2013–2016 and 2016–2018—the number of landslides fell, respectively, to 26 and 13.5 landslides per year. In non-earthquake years, most landslides happen on south-facing slopes, facing the prevailing winds. In contrast, during or immediately after the earthquake, up to 32% of the landslides occurred on north and northwest-facing slopes. Although we could not find imagery from the day after the earthquake, overview reconnaissance flights 10 and 16 days later showed that most of the landslides were recent, suggesting they were co-seismic. On the evening of December 22, 2018, the coasts of the Sunda Strait, Indonesia, were hit by a tsunami generated by the collapse of a part of the Anak Krakatau volcano. Hundreds of people were killed, thousands were injured and displaced. This paper presents a preliminary modeling of the volcano flank collapse and the tsunami generated based on the results of a 2D depth-averaged coupled model involving a granular rheology and a Coulomb friction for the slide description and dispersive effects for the water flow part. With a reconstructed total volume (subaerial and submarine) of the landslide of 150 million m 3 inferred from pre and post-collapse satellite and aerial images, the comparison of the simulated water waves with the observations (tide gauges located all around the strait, photographs and field surveys) is satisfactory. Due to the lack of information for the submarine part of the landslide, the reconstructed submarine slope is assumed to be approximately constant. A significant time delay on the results and particularly in the Bandar Lampung Bay could be attributed to imprecisions of bathymetric data. The sensitivity to the basal friction and to dispersive effects is analyzed through numerical tests. Results show that the influence of the basal friction angle on the simulated wave heights decreases with distance and that a value of 2 ∘ gives consistent results with the observations. The dispersive effects are assessed by comparing water waves simulated by a shallow water model and a Boussinesq model. Simulations with frequency dispersion produce longer wave periods and smaller wave amplitudes in the Sunda Strait and particularly in deep waters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on a typical slow-moving landslide that occurred in Shuitianba village in Wanyuan County, Sichuan Province, China, on September 16, 2017. The landslide in Wanyuan County is regionally outstanding for its features and well-developed landslide morphology. Hence, this event can provide a good case study for understanding the possible triggering conditions of the occurrences of all the landslides examined in Wanyuan County. The 225 residents of Shuitianba village did not flee the village because the deformation of the landslide was extremely slow. However, the primary emergency tasks are still necessary to reduce the landslide risk that may affect the residents. Detailed field investigations, boreholes, and exploratory trenches were performed to investigate the characteristics and triggering factors of this landslide. Rainfall and anthropogenic activities (such as informal, unplanned settlements and deforestation) were revealed to be the main triggering factors. The main engineering control measures, including anti-sliding piles, an anti-sliding retaining wall, and intercepting ditch, were applied to stabilize the landslide. However, landslide mitigation measures have not been finished, and hence, some interim measures are suggested to effectively reduce landslide risk. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports on a recent landslide event, which occurred in Yanyuan County at Xichang City, Sichuan Province, China, on 19 July 2018. Due to the continuous and heavy rainfall between 8 July 2018 and 18 July 2018, approximately 18 million m3 of soil detached from an ancient landslide and buried 65 buildings, the entire sliding process lasted for several minutes. Here, based on field investigations and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) photography, we describe the characteristics and failure mechanism of this landslide. The results showed that the landslide was triggered by the continuous and heavy rainfall. Additionally, during the first post-failure stage, the motion of this landslide involved typical successive movement, and over time, the style of movement progressively turned flow-like, which can be classified as debris slide by using the 1978 Varnes classification scheme. The landslide event described here is an outstanding case for landslide studies. The Yangtze River is one of the most important rivers in China due to its large basin size, the large population along the river, and the numerous large dams and reservoirs on the river. The Jinsha River, the upper reach of the Yangtze River, was dammed twice recently at Baige, Tibet, one on 10 October 2018 and the other on 3 November 2018 (UTC + 8). Accordingly, two large landslide dams, 61 m and 96 m in height to the lowest dam crest, were formed in a 3-week interval. Due to the large inflow rates at the time of damming, the barrier lake level rose rapidly, posing huge risks to the downstream residents and properties. In managing the landslide dam risk, one of the important tasks is to predict the dam breaching flood beforehand. This paper focuses on rapid prediction of the dam breaching hydrograph and breach geometric parameters of the two landslide dams. The predictions were made timely before the breaching of the two landslide dams using both erosion-based empirical equations and numerical simulation and were refined based on detailed field investigation at the site after breaching. Comprehensive field investigations were conducted to determine the geological structures of the landslide dams, characterize the erodibility of dam materials, and measure the final beach dimensions. The simulated dam breaching processes, outflow hydrographs, lake water level changes, and final breach dimensions were validated by field observations. Compared with the hypothetical scenario without a diversion channel on the second landslide dam, a diversion channel 15 m in depth successfully lowered the peak flood discharge by about one third and helped to mitigate the flood risk significantly. Landslide is a disaster which may cause huge losses of human life and block the traffic on hilly area. In this paper, we present a new physically based model to simulate the dynamic flow of landslides, under a modified MPM (material point method) framework. To realistically simulate the characteristics of fracture and flow of soil medium in landslide, we introduce the modified Cambridge clay model (MCCM) from soil dynamics into the yield surface criterion to model the dynamic process of landslides. The interaction between soil and rock in the landslide is simulated by a level-set-based two-way fluid–solid coupling algorithm. Meanwhile, we propose a GPU-based optimization to calculate the signed distance function in level set to improve the efficiency of collision detection. We also simplify the hardening and softening parameter calculation algorithm of MCCM to reduce the calculation involved in landslide simulation. By choosing different values of the material yield surface parameters, various kinds of landslide disaster scenes with different cover area are successfully generated, including rocks rolling from hill, soil and rock collapsing, landslide flowing, and covering the road and cars. The present paper deals with landslide hazards in the Ebantu district of the Oromia regional state of western Ethiopia. Ninety-two landslides were recorded during field investigations and Google Earth interpretation. The data sets were prepared as a layer in the spatial GIS database that was later utilized for generating the landslide susceptibility zonation map. Slope, elevation, and distance from drainage were extracted from the digital elevation model, the geology is modified from the geological map of Nekemte, and the land use map was prepared from Landsat +ETM satellite (2015) using digital image processing techniques. The statistical index method was applied to identify landslide hazard areas, and statistical analysis was carried out based on the relationship between past landslides and the causative factors. The causative factor map is further classified into a number of classes based on their relative influence on mass movement and rating values are assigned to each class depending on their influence on slope instability. Based on their assigned weight values, the map overlay process is performed using Arc GIS 10.3, and finally, the landslide hazard map showing various zones is produced by the overlay technique.
