Moisture absorption in the cell wall structure of wood is well known to induce considerable swelling of the wood exerting high expansion forces. This swelling is mainly induced by the sorptive action of the hydroxyl groups of the carbohydrate wood polymers; cellulose and hemicelluloses. On the ultrastructural level, there are, however, still questions with regard to the detailed deformations induced by this moisture absorption. Here, FTIR spectroscopy and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray diffraction were used on paper samples to study the deformation of the cellulose crystals as a consequence of moisture absorption and desorption. Both techniques revealed that the moisture absorption resulted in a transverse contraction of the cellulose crystals accompanied by a somewhat smaller elongation in the cellulose chain direction. The deformations were found to be a direct response to the increased moisture content and were also found to be reversible during moisture desorption. It is hypothesised that these deformations are a consequence of the swelling forces created by the combined longitudinal and lateral expansions of the non-crystalline cellulose molecules and the glucomannan hemicellulose aligned along the cellulose crystals. The moisture-induced degradations during the use of paper are of growing concern for the existing paper materials stored in libraries, archives and museums. Knowing the moisture profiles is therefore a primary step in order to understand paper deterioration and give an assessment of degradation rate of library collections in their preservation. In this paper, the theoretical models based on 2-D scanning electron microscope real image microstructure were established for describing moisture transport in paper sheet in response with external humidity and the moisture diffusion profiles. The acid-catalyzed hydrolysis kinetic in combination with moisture diffusion theory gave the complementary explanation for the time-dependent natural aging process of a paper sheet and book stacks. The differential equations were solved by a numerical approach based on the finite element method implemented in commercial COMSOL Multiphysics. The 2-D simulation results, with a mesh based directly on SEM characterization of microstructure, could show the equilibrium moisture contents and the degradation rates as a function of relative humidity in cellulose pores and cellulose fibers across the transverse section of paper. For the stacks composed of books, the air gaps between the books provided convenient channels for diffusion and transport, accelerating the moisture transport process in the book stacks. To model advanced 3-D forming strategies for paper materials, the effects of environmental conditions on the mechanical behavior must be quantitatively and qualitatively understood. A tensile test method has been created, verified, and implemented to test paper at various moisture content and temperature levels. Testing results for one type of paper for moisture contents from 6.9 to 13.8 percent and temperatures from 23 to 168 degrees Celsius are presented and discussed. Coupled moisture and temperature effects have been discovered for maximum stress. Uncoupled effects have been discovered for elastic modulus, tangent modulus, hardening modulus, strain at break, tensile energy absorption (TEA), and approximate plastic strain. A hyperbolic tangent function is also utilized which captures the entire one-dimensional stress-strain response of paper. The effects of moisture and temperature on the three coefficients in the hyperbolic tangent function may be assumed to be uncoupled, which may simplify the development of moisture- and temperature-dependent constitutive models. We present theory for the shrinkage on drying of the cross-sectional area of cellulosic fibres and show that this depends on their initial moisture content only. For the linear shrinkage of cross-sectional dimensions, an additional parameter is required, which we estimate from comparison of the theory with experimental data from the literature. We proceed to combine our model of fibre shrinkage with probabilistic theory for fibre contacts in random fibrous networks to obtain a model for the unrestrained shrinkage of isotropic paper sheets. The expression obtained depends only on the moisture content of fibres and the extent of inter-fibre contact and exhibits good agreement with experimental data for laboratory-formed paper sheets. The hygroexpansion of paper was significantly reduced, up to 28% lower amplitude of change when the paper was subjected to a change in relative humidity from 20 to 85% RH, by oxidation of the fibre wall. Never-dried bleached kraft fibres were oxidised with sodium periodate, which specifically oxidises the C2–C3 bond of 1,4-glucans so that the cellulose is partly converted into dialdehyde cellulose. Since both the dry and wet strength of laboratory sheets were significantly improved, the dry tensile strength increased from 24 kNm/kg up to 66 kNm/kg and the relative wet tensile strength increased from 1.5% up to 40%, it is suggested that the aldehydes form hemiacetal linkages within the fibre wall during the consolidation and drying of the sheets. The mechanical, hygroexpansive and moisture sorptive properties of the sheets made from the oxidised fibres were studied. The results showed that the main reason for the reduced hygroexpansion was a decrease in moisture sorptivity, i.e. when the sheets made of fibres with different degrees of cross-linking were subjected to the same change in relative humidity, the more cross-linked fibres showed a smaller change in moisture content. It was also shown that the hygroexpansion coefficient, i.e. the moisture-normalised dimensional change, was not significantly changed by the periodate oxidation, i.e. indicating that there are no improvement in dimensional stability if the paper is subjected to a specific amount of water. The influence of mixing process (in a two-roll mill, high-speed mixer, or twin-screw extruder) on the strength properties of polypropylene/wood fiber composites was studied. The best results were obtained for composites compounded in a twin-screw extruder. The water uptake and the influence of moisture on the flexural strength (σfl) and modulus (Efl) were studied by immersion of the composites in water at 20, 50, and 90°C. Most strongly the moisture affected the value of Efl, but the degree of water uptake and the change in σfl and Efl also depended on temperature and the presence of a modificator—maleated polypropylene (MAH). MAH improved the strength properties of the composites both in dry and wet states and also decreased the extent of water uptake and swelling in cyclic (soaking/drying) tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic mechanical responses of Scots pine, paper, PA6, cellophane, PVAc and PUR samples subjected to changes in the relative humidity of the surrounding air from 5 to 85% and vice versa have been analysed semiquantitatively on the basis of coupled non-linear rate equations for the moisture concentration in the sample as a function of the time. Important characteristics of the diffusion of moisture into and out of the samples have been studied by measuring the sample weight as a function of time. Moisture sorption results in sample swelling in Scots pine, paper, PA6, cellophane and PUR, for all of which mechanical loss peaks were detected. For PVAc, which does not bind moisture at load-bearing hydrogen bonding sites, no mechanical loss peak could be found. Characteristic of the mechanical loss at low vibration frequencies (0.01 to 1 Hz) is a peak immediately following a change in relative humidity for all studied sample materials except PVAc. This peak is almost certainly due to modulation of the number of load-bearing hydrogen bonds in the material. The relation between the width of the mechanical loss peak and the duration of the moisture sorption and desorption processes is interpreted according to an accepted model of two water molecule binding modes, one in which load-bearing hydrogen bonds are broken unimolecularly by water molecules and one in which further water molecules form clusters on the already unimolecularly bound water. © 1998 Chapman & Hall [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
