In Argentina, current food and land-use systems are drivers of greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, nutrient outflows, chemical pollution and water stress, while they fail to produce sustainable livelihoods for farmers and herders. Argentina must transition toward more sustainable food and land-use systems to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) and the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Here, we present mid-century food and land-use system pathways to achieve biodiversity, freshwater use, food production and greenhouse gas emission targets, co-developed with the government, research and civil society stakeholders. We used a multi-model approach, integrating outputs from a food system and land-use accounting tool (FABLE calculator), a land-use allocation model (Dinamica EGO) and a spatially explicit conservation prioritization approach (NatureMap) to construct a carbon neutral, actionable food system and land-use scenario that could also lead to the achievement of biodiversity, freshwater use, food production and carbon storage targets by 2050. Such integrated approaches are rare, despite their high value for helping cross-sectoral experts and policymakers cut through complexity to find pathways to achieve multiple sustainability objectives in tandem. This paper presents a nationally designed transferable methodology to: (1) construct a carbon neutral pathway toward 2050, (2) create spatially explicit land-use projections, (3) detect and assess trade-offs between sustainability goals, (4) modify this pathway to foster co-benefits and (5) work toward concurrent attainment of multiple SDGs. Preliminary results suggest Argentina is well suited to meet multiple SDGs, provided businesses, civil society and government agree to several key commitments, including completely halting deforestation, promoting afforestation and reforestation, and increasing agricultural productivity to spare natural lands. The Reconquista River is one of the most polluted rivers in Latin America. This paper aims at identifying the dynamics of water quality in an area with low or "background" concentrations of pollutants within the Reconquista River system in order to better define levels of pollution in the main system. In order to describe the dynamics of water quality in the background area, we propose a methodology based on flow estimation with the instantaneous unit hydrograph model and on measurements of physical and chemical water variables under different hydrological conditions. Because of high dissolved oxygen and low ammonium and o-phosphate concentrations, the Arroyo Durazno, a tributary stream of the Reconquista River, is defined as a background area. When a storm event begins, the concentration of nitrates and the electrical conductivity diminish. An increase in dissolved organic carbon suggests an important input of carbon from hillslope runoff. The proportion of fulvic and humic acids also increases. On the receding limb of the hydrograph, nitrate concentration was lower than during maximum flow and organic carbon concentration remained high. This behavior, known as the "flushing effect", suggests that the soluble material accumulated in the drainage area during dry periods is transported to the stream by leaching or "lixiviation" and surface runoff, thus raising solute concentrations during the first few hours of the storm. Water quality changes rapidly, even in background areas, due to its dependence on the flow. The methodology followed in this paper can also be applied to other basins with similar characteristics. Due to the difficulty in defining baseline areas for surface waters, a knowledge of background water quality and its dynamics is essential for understanding pollution trends and anthropogenic impacts on rivers. Landfills constitute potential sources of different pollutants that could generate human health and environmental problems. While some landfills currently work under the protection of a bottom liner with leachate collection, it was demonstrated that migration could take place even yet with these cautions. The purpose of this paper is to assess the pollution caused by a leachate plume from a municipal landfill that is affecting both groundwater and surface waters. The research was carried out at Pacará Pintado landfill in northwestern Argentina. Analysis of water samples indicates that leachate is affecting groundwater under the landfill area and an abandoned river channel hydraulically connected. In the center of the landfill area, the plume is anoxic and sulfate, nitrate, iron and manganese reduction zones were identified. Leachate plume presented high concentration of organic matter, Fe, Mn, NH, Cl and Cr reaching an extension of 900 m. The presence of a leachate plume in a landfill site with a single liner system implies that the use of this groundwater pollution control method alone is not enough especially if permeable sediments are present below. The upper limit of fluoride concentration in water for human consumption is 1.5 ppm. Many studies have been carried out concerning the water fluoride concentration in wide areas around the world, but none have studied the change of fluoride concentration as a function of geographical coordinates and through time. This paper describes 'microvariation' of fluoride concentration among wells separated by less than 500 m in a month. On the other hand, 'macrovariation' is also studied describing changes among cities that are separated by more than 10 km and compared with fluoride concentrations measured 65 years ago. Fluoride concentration was measured in a wide geographical area of Argentina, which is 133,000 km. Samples of water were collected from different regions. Macrovariation: Differences in fluoride concentration in well water among regions were found, as well as an increase in water fluoride concentration during seven decades. Microvariation: Daily water fluoride concentration in a specific area displayed a great variation in the measurements through time. In addition, wells with no more than 500 m of separation were measured at the same time and were significantly different. These results indicate that in order to determine the fluoride concentration of a region, different samples of the same area should be obtained and a sampling through time should also be done. Suquía River is a medium-sized hydrological system (basin area of ~7,700 km) that supplies fresh water to Córdoba city, a town of ~1,500,000 inhabitants in central Argentina. This paper examines the present-day hydrochemistry of Suquía River urban catchment analyzing its major and minor dissolved components, and the nutrients variability by means of QUAL-2K modeling software. The Suquía River has bicarbonate-type waters upstream the city and sulfate-type waters right downstream, whereas they exhibit a mixed-to-alkali-type cationic composition. The seasonal analysis of its major dissolved constituents clearly showed a dilution process during the wet season (i.e. austral summer). In the last 20 years, the Suquía River has modified its anionic composition, now showing higher relative concentrations of SO as a consequence of urban activities. However, trace elements dissolved concentrations do not evidence a strong pollution effect. Nutrients [nitrogen species, total phosphorous (TP)] and related parameters, such as biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and dissolved oxygen (DO), evidence a clear influence of human activities. The QUAL-2K model was used to evaluate the spatial behavior of selected nutrients and associated variables, (i.e. TP, N-NH, N-NO, DO, BOD). Nutrient concentrations are affected by point sources of contaminants, particularly domestic waste and sewage, as well as by diffuse agricultural pollution. A calibrated QUAL-2K modeling exercise clearly shows the impact of the Córdoba city's municipal wastewater treatment plant on the Suquía River water quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is the first comprehensive survey of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal sediments in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, and provides useful information on their levels of concentration, composition, and sources of these pollutants. The total concentrations of PAHs ranged from 15 to 10,260 ng g − 1. The highest contents (mean 3,315 ng g − 1) of total PAHs in marine sediments were found in the inner channels of the estuary, while the lower ones (204 ng g − 1) belong to samples collected far away from contamination sources. The global average recorded in this study (1,500 ng g − 1) indicates that the studied area lies within the referenced category of industrialized coastal zones under chronic pollution. The diagenetic PAH contribution was found to be negligible at all sampled locations; however, the calculation of molecular ratios determined an overimposition of pyrolitic PAHs over the petrogenic input. Further, the use of principal components analysis (PCA) clearly separated ring group compounds and enabled the determination of pyrolitic/combustion PAHs dominancy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several statistical analyses—as alternative tools—were applied to magnetic monitoring studies. Magnetic and chemical data from two environments have been gathered from previous papers and studied separately. Univariate and multivariate analyses were first examined, revealing a link between magnetic and chemical variables. The latter analyses, in particular, canonical correlation analysis, showed very good canonical correlations: R = 0.950 (Antarctica) and R = 0.891 (Argentina). On the other hand, in order to classify the data according to the degree of contamination, principal coordinates and discriminant analyses, as well as the comparison of several multivariate means were performed. Three groups were distinguished in both case studies, which were well classified at a low margin of error and quite different from each other at a significant level: 0.01 (Antarctica) and 0.05 (Argentina). The joint use of these statistical analyses also showed, in agreement with previous studies, that the relevant variables in order to identify atmospheric pollution are: magnetic susceptibility, saturation of isothermal remanent magnetisation, anhysteric susceptibility/magnetic susceptibility, remanent coercivity, and copper, lead, zinc and chromium contents. This paper shows the results of a ground magnetic survey carried out to study solid waste landfills. The area located southward of Gualeguaychú town was chosen as a pilot case. This zone was selected considering the available knowledge about the cessation of operations, and the interest of the local authorities in verifying the existence of anomalies indicative of possible dangerous pollutants. The total magnetic field was measured along six profiles, and the corresponding anomalies were calculated. The profiles were modelled in 2.5 D, and along them Euler’s deconvolution was used to estimate the depth to the sources. The first and the second derivatives of the residual magnetic field were calculated, in order to sharpen the anomalies. Our interpretation suggests that the characteristics of the modelled bodies and the magnitudes of the detected anomalies do not indicate the presence of drums in the sanitary infill. A multi-year monitoring data set of potentially harmful elements (PHEs), which are present in the chemical composition of atmospheric settleable particulate matter (SPM) in the urban, industrial and port areas in Bahía Blanca, was studied in order to assess potential ecological risk. The selected PHEs were metal elements of local and regional environmental importance (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn). Seventeen sampling campaigns were carried out between April 2013 and September 2019. After the microwave-assisted acid digestion of samples, the total contents of the PHEs were determined by ICP-OES. The annual dry deposition rate, the indexes associated with the potential ecological risk (RI) and the degree of geo-accumulation (Igeo) of each PHE were calculated. The results indicated that: (a) there are 3 groups (I, II, III) of PHEs with differentiated concentration levels, ranked I (Pb > Zn > Cu) > II (Cr ≈ Ni) > III (Cd) (p < 0.01) in all the studied areas; (b) the median of the total deposition rate was 1 mg cm−2. month−1 with a significant relative contribution of Pb; (c) a considerable increase in geo-accumulation of Pb indicated that SPM was functioning as a sink for Pb, and also reflected a significant progressive increase in the potential ecological risk in all sites (p < 0.01); and (d) there were chemometrically identified potential sources of Pb, Cu and Zn emissions that would be associated mainly to the resuspension of dust from geogenic, industrial and urban origin, and to a lesser extent, to other gaseous emissions of the industrial sector. This work highlights three major aspects of environmental assessment: (a) the value of continuous monitoring as an important tool to detect long-term trends; (b) the importance of the role of dust fall as a useful environmental indicator of lead geo-accumulation; and (c) the great utility of geo-accumulation and potential ecological risk indices as rapid quantitative assessment tools of environmental pollution. To protect ecosystems impacted by human activities and prevent their degradation, it is imperative to evaluate variations in the concentration of environmental pollutants over time. Here, we evaluated the intra- and inter-annual variations of several metals from 15 sites in the Matanza Riachuelo River basin (one of the most polluted in the world) and determined the physicochemical and meteorological parameters associated with these changes from 2008 to 2015. For this, in each site, we used Asymmetric Eigenvector Maps and Redundancy Analysis. The results highlighted temporal patterns of metal concentrations and several factors associated with them, perhaps related to the actions performed in the area since 2008. Additionally, we found that the effects of physicochemical and meteorological factors on metal concentrations were site-dependent, possibly related to the presence of different local sources of pollution or characteristics of the river in each site, such as its sediments. This approach could be applied to different scenarios (aquatic and terrestrial) and could provide a tool to help decision-makers address the harmful consequences of the continuous advance of human activities on human and ecosystem health. The aims of this study were to assess Cu, Zn, and Cr pollution in a highly polluted river in Argentina (Matanza-Riachuelo) and to evaluate tolerance strategies and toxic effects in aquatic macrophytes. Chemical techniques were used to assess the bioavailability of these metals and to evaluate their uptake and translocation by plants. The ultrastructure of the roots of a free-floating plant (Eichhornia crassipes) and the leaves of an emergent macrophyte (Sagittaria montevidensis) was examined using transmission electron microscopy. In the lower basin of the river, the highest concentrations of total heavy metals were detected in water (179 µgZn/g; 54 µgCu/g; 240 µgCr/g) and sediments (1499 µgZn/g; 393 µgCu/g; 4886 µgCr/g). In the upper basin of the river, low percentages of Zn and Cu (8 to 25%) were extracted with DTPA and EDTA, probably due to the lithogenic origin of these metals. Higher extraction percentages (24 to 66%) were obtained in the lower basin, in accordance with anthropogenic pollution. For Cr, extraction percentages were low in the upper basin of the river (< 4.5%) and extremely low in the lower basin (< 0.03%). In S. montevidensis, the BCF (bioconcentration factor) and TF (translocation factor) indexes were compatible with heavy metal exclusion mechanisms in sediments, whereas in the E. crassipes, root compartmentalization could be the main tolerance strategy. The leaves of S. montevidensis showed no evidence of damage, whereas ultrastructural alterations (plasmolyzed cells, disorganized membranes) were observed in E. crassipes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plastic pollution and the numerous consequences it has on aquatic life have become a huge concern in recent years. While many studies have been conducted in marine environments, studies in freshwater ecosystems are scarce and insufficient. The Paraná River is the most important water course in the La Plata River basin and the fifth in the world with a mean annual discharge of 18,000 m3 per second. Currently available studies show the presence of plastic in river shores and fish gut, but more research should be carried out in order to know the extension and origin of plastic contamination. Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify and characterize macro-, meso-, and microplastics found in the riverine beaches next to Rosario city, the most populated city standing by the lower Paraná River coast in Argentina. The results show that plastic pollution is ubiquitous, but the city shores are significantly more polluted than the wetland shore with a mean of 30,780 and 6375 microplastics per square meter respectively (p = 0.024). The food and beverage industry packaging combined were the most frequent macroplastics found. Also, 3 out of 4 meso- and microplastics were white/transparent, the color that is most likely to be ingested by fish and invertebrates. Finally, all micro- and mesoplastics found were secondary and, in the case of microplastics, they were mainly fibers (93.4%) which highlight its ecological relevance. As a whole, plastic contamination is a serious issue in the Rosario area, specially single-use plastics and short-lived products. Waterfowl hunting in Argentina is a profitable industry that attracts hunters from all over the world. Most hunting occurs as high-end hunting tourism, through which registered outfitters service predominantly foreign clients on private lands. Lead pollution from hunting ammunition is increasingly recognized as a significant local problem, impacting wildlife, aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and extending to vulnerable human rural communities. Regulatory frameworks that restrict lead shot use are a budding success story but remain challenged by their constrained geographic range and limited compliance rooted in unavailable nontoxic ammunition. The present work includes part of the first studies of metals concentrations in the zooplankton from a heavily industrialized estuary of Argentina, the Bahía Blanca estuary. Cd, Cu, and Pb concentrations in the zooplankton (macro- and mesozooplankton) and the suspended particulate matter were measured at stations with different degree of pollution. Physicochemical variables and zooplankton composition and abundance were also analyzed. Thus, the aim of the present work was to analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of heavy metals in these two different fractions, and the possible relation among them due to their importance in the biogeochemical cycles of marine environments. Samplings were carried out during a year, from March 2005 to April 2006, every 2 months, at stations located near chemical and petrochemical industries, stations far from these points and one station in an intermediate location. In the mesozooplankton, the mean concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Pb were 3.63 ± 1.46, 34.46 ± 5.40, and 11.54 ± 3.04 μg g dry weight (d.w.) respectively, while in the macrozooplankton, 3.20 ± 2.28, 21.86 ± 4.79, and 8.36 ± 1.85 μg g d.w. On the other hand, particulate Cd, Cu, and Pb presented a mean concentration of 3.33 ± 1.22, 12.75 ± 2.67, and 12.53 ± 3.20 μg g d.w., respectively. Metals' levels in both the SPM and zooplankton fluctuated throughout the study time and were relatively high in the particulate phase especially for Cu and Pb. Moreover, zooplankton accumulated important concentrations of the three metals. The sources of them are probably the discharges of the industries and domestic sewages located near the estuary. Environmental pollution and its harmful consequences for the population's health derived from coal production in the locality of Ensenada (Argentina) is studied by magnetic and non-magnetic means. Coke is used for the production of industrial coal. This is a final product obtained in petroleum refineries. Coke is a non-magnetic material showing values of magnetic susceptibility close to zero. Conversely, the magnetic susceptibility of the coal released from factory chimneys is considerably enhanced due to the building of magnetic fibers and spherules inside the furnace, used for coal production. Due to this property, the magnetic content of coal can be used as environmental proxy for studying the environmental impact caused by coal industries in urban areas. The values of magnetic susceptibility decrease as the distance from the contamination source increases. This indicates that magnetic concentration is lower. The grain size of magnetic particles also decreases according to the distance, which is seen when analyzing the grain size parameters. According to the different non-magnetic approaches applied, the particles released by the industry, which affect the region, fall within the rank of breathable particles (<2.5 μm). Besides, inhalable particles are also found (2.5-10 μm). Such determinations are consistent with inter-parametric ratios applied in the study of grain sizes. Blubber from stranded South American sea lions ( Otaria flavescens) was sampled between 1991 and 2005 on the Peninsula Valdés in Argentina and analyzed for organochlorine (OC) pollutants. Mean blubber concentrations, expressed on an extractable basis, were 686 (SD = 1,060) ng g−1 for dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane (tDDT) and 735 (SD = 787) ng g−1 for polychlorinated byphenils (PCB). The OC levels were well below those associated with adverse sublethal effects and lethality in mammals. OC concentrations showed statistically significant associations with age that were positive in males and negative in females. These trends are consistent with the majority of marine mammal populations studied. There were no trends in the levels of tDDT or PCB over time. In spite of the low levels detected, OC contamination was present consistently over the 14-year period, suggesting continuous inputs from geographic redistribution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superficial sediments and settling material collected in Buenos Aires coastal area were analyzed to evaluate the accumulation and sources of trace metals. Residual elements showed homogeneous sedimentary concentrations (Fe: 23,846 ± 4,367; Ni: 10 ± 2.7; Mn: 706 ± 314 μg g−1) whereas anthropogenic metals presented exponentially decreasing offshore gradients (Zn: 98 ± 69; Cr: 28 ± 21; Cu: 19 ± 15; Pb: 18 ± 13 μg g−1). Anthropogenic impact was evaluated through metal-Fe relationships, Fe-normalized enrichment factors and sediment quality guidelines. The slopes of metal-Fe regressions from background sites were comparable to upper crust metal ratios, excepted Cr which is impoverished, and Mn which is diagenetically enriched. Metal-Fe relationships also hold for most 2.5 km offshore sites but with higher slopes denoting human influence, and are completely lost in 1–2.5 km sediments and trap material which plot over the regressions and exceed sediment quality guidelines. Communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates, fish density and biomass, and environmental variables were investigated in three Patagonian mountain rivers affected by urbanization. The rivers Las Minas, Esquel and Carbón that flow through the towns of Cholila, Esquel and Corcovado, respectively (northwest Chubut, Argentina) were selected to assess the degree of impairment. A reference site and an urban site were established on each river. Water quality variables including conductivity, major nutrients, total suspended solids (TSS) and dissolved oxygen, habitat conditions and quality of riparian ecosystems were investigated in autumn, winter, spring and summer 2005–2006. Macroinvertebrates were sampled concurrently in three riffles and three pools at each site. Invertebrate species richness, EPT richness, the Shannon–Weaver diversity index, % EPT density, and the BMPS index were lower at urban sites, whereas % collectors increased. The most impaired site was below Esquel, the largest town. Senzilloides panguipulli (Plecoptera), Polypedilum and Rheotanytarsus species (Diptera: Chironomidae), Nais communis (Oligochaeta) and Meridialaris chiloeensis (Ephemeroptera) dominated assemblages at reference and moderately impaired sites in summer, whereas the strongly polluted reach below Esquel had low flow in summer and a community dominated by Limnodrilus spp. (Oligochaeta), Helobdella spp. (Hirudinea), and two Hyallela species (Amphipoda). Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that ammonia, conductivity and TSS were important variables structuring invertebrate assemblages. In contrast, fish density and biomass varied in a non-systematic manner among sites. Overall, urbanization resulted in varying degrees of habitat degradation, sedimentation and nutrient enrichment that were reflected by the macroinvertebrate assemblages, which can be used effectively to monitor the effects of urban communities on Patagonian mountain streams. A study of the water quality of the Potrero de los Funes River (San Luis – Argentina) was carried out in order to evaluate the possible effect of the anthropogenic activities on the river developed in the homonymous town. Samples were collected during the period March 2000–November 2005 at three selected sampling sites (RP1, RP2 and RP3). Different physicochemical and bacteriological parameters (turbidity, pH, conductivity, suspended solids, alkalinity, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, chlorides, nitrates, phosphates, sulphates, chemical oxygen demand (COD), 5-day biological oxygen demand (BOD5), dissolved oxygen, total coliforms, Escherichia coli and total heterotrophic bacteria) were analysed according to the Standard Method for the Examination of Water and Wastewater. When comparing the values of total coliforms, E. coli, total heterotrophic bacteria, COD, BOD5 and phosphates from the zone without anthropogenic influence (RP1) and the urban zones (RP2 and RP3) an important variation in the parameters was observed. These results indicate that the urban activity produces a serious and negative effect on the water quality, thus constituting a sanitary risk and may have a major impact on the trophic status of the Potrero de los Funes dam. As case study, we report on the use of General Quality Index (GQI) to evaluate spatial and seasonal changes in the water quality of Potrero de los Funes River. Anthropogenic influence, mainly due to urban and industrial activities, may affect fluvial environments and soils, via atmospheric contamination and liquid and solid waste. Continuing previous works on stream sediments and soils, the Gran La Plata area was chosen. In this area, located in the Northeast of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina), several streams and soils were sampled. The streams have similar characteristics, although some of them have a higher input of pollutants (fluvial effluents, fly ashes, solid wastes, etc.). The studied soils have different pedological development. Magnetic and chemical studies were carried out in the laboratory. Analyses of the results indicated that the behavior of magnetic parameters can be related to the variations of heavy metal contents in stream sediments but there is not a good correlation in soils. The comparison between both environments (stream-sediment and soils) reveals a different impact of pollutants. Magnetite, especially PSD grains, seems to be the main carrier for both environments. Samples of inspirable air particulate (inhalable + ingestable) were obtained at two urban locations in southern Argentina which differ in their exposure to pollution by class B2 polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Sample extracts were tested in vitro for induction of chromosomal aberrations in cultured rat hepatocytes. The average induced amount of chromosomal aberrations did not vary among geographic locations, but significant differences were identified in samples near known emitting sources. The differences were analyzed in the frame of a model of the emissions and their subsequent distribution and re-suspension from the soil and other surfaces. The results show that the rat hepatocyte test is sensitive to genotoxic activity of the urban air particulate in the low dose range of the tested fractions. Adequate models of human exposure to these materials should consider emissions and re-suspension of pollutants by wind.
