Introduction: Adrenal hemorrhage (AH) is a rare condition and severe cases can lead to acute adrenal insufficiency with potentially life-threatening consequences. AH can be caused by a variety of etiologic factors, including systemic lupus erythematosus and antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). The early identification and treatment of these patients improves their prognosis. Objective: The aims of this study were to analyze and summarize the clinical characteristics of systemic lupus erythematosus patients with AH. Methods: The clinical characteristics of 6 systemic lupus erythematosus patients complicated with AH admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital and Beijing Shijitan Hospital from May 2004 to April 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Results: The diagnosis of AH was based on computed tomography (CT) findings. Two patients had bilateral lesions, and the other 4 patients had unilateral lesions. The symptoms of adrenal insufficiency were observed in 2 patients. The frequent presenting symptoms were abdominal pain, lower abdominal distension, vomiting, weakness, fever, arthrodynia, and skin rash. Four patients had APS. Five patients (4 patients with APS and 1 patient without APS) had thromboembolic events. All patients received glucocorticoid and immunosuppressant therapy. Five patients were treated with anticoagulant therapy. Follow-up imaging examinations showed a partial or total regression of the lesions after treatment. Conclusions: In the proper clinical setting, having high clinical suspicion for AH, early diagnosis and timely management is crucial to avoid life-threatening adrenal insufficiency. As urban development accelerates and natural disasters occur more frequently, the urgency of developing effective emergency shelter planning strategies intensifies. The shelter location selection method under the traditional multi-criteria decision-making framework suffers from issues such as strong subjectivity and insufficient data support. Artificial intelligence offers a robust data-driven approach for site selection; however, many methods neglect the spatial relationships of site selection targets within geographical space. This paper introduces an emergency shelter site selection model that combines a variational graph autoencoder (VGAE) with a random forest (RF), namely VGAE-RF. In the constructed urban spatial topological graph, based on network geographic information, this model captures both the latent features of geographic unit coupling and integrates explicit and latent features to forecast the likelihood of emergency shelters in the construction area. This study takes Beijing, China, as the experimental area and evaluates the reliability of different model methods using a confusion matrix, Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve, and Imbalance Index of spatial distribution as evaluation indicators. In the urban water environmental management, a fast and effective method for water quality analysis should be established with the rapid urbanization. In this study, the Beijing's sub-center was chosen as a case study, and long short-term memory (LSTM) and back propagation (BP) models were built, then a transfer learning model was proposed and applied to optimize the two models on the base of the upstream and downstream relationships in the rivers. The results indicated that the proposed deep learning model could improve NSE by 7% and 9% for LSTM and BP at the Dongguan Bridge gauge, respectively. At the Xugezhuang gauge in the Liangshui River, NSE was improved by 11% and 17%, respectively. At the Yulinzhuang gauge, it was improved by 16% and 13%, respectively. Because the upstream and downstream relationships were considered in the learning model, the model performance was obviously better. The intensification of global heat wave events is seriously affecting residents' emotional health. Based on social media big data, our research explored the spatial pattern of residents' sentiments during heat waves (SDHW). Besides, their association with urban functional areas (UFAs) was analyzed using the Apriori algorithm of association rule mining. It was found that SDHW in Beijing were characterized by obvious spatial clustering, with hot spots predominately dispersed in urban areas and far suburbs, and cold spots mainly clustered in near suburbs. As for the associations with urban function areas, green space and park areas had significant effects on the positive sentiment in the study area, while a higher percentage of industrial areas had a greater impact on negative SDHW. When it comes to combined UFAs, our results revealed that the green space and park area combined with other functional areas was more closely related to positive SDHW, indicating the significance of promoting positive sentiment. Subdistricts with a lower percentage of residential and traffic areas may have a more negative sentiment. There were two main combined UFAs that have greater impacts on SDHW: the combination of residential and industrial areas, and the combination of residential and public areas. This study contributes to the understanding of improving community planning and governance when heat waves increase, building healthy cities, and enhancing urban emergency management. Dust events are concerning due to their potential to cause environmental pollution and health issues by carrying numerous particles from various regions. However, the risks of airborne bacteria from dust have not yet been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to reveal the particle size distribution, antibiotic resistance, microbial community structure, and diversity of airborne bacteria by using culture methods, and assess the potential health risks by calculating the dose expectation (d ¯) , daily short-term intake (STI), and Hazard Index (HI) during an extreme dust event in urban Beijing (China). Airborne bacteria were sampled before, during, and the day after a severe dust event in March 2021 in Beijing using the six-stage impactor. The major findings were as follows: (1) airborne bacterial concentration increased during the dust event, and inhalable bacteria account for 67.93%. The Hazard Index (HI) of cultivable and inhalable airborne bacteria in men, women, and children exposed to dust events was up to 1.42 and 1.54 times higher than that in individuals who were not exposed, respectively. HI was 1.52 times higher in children than in men when exposed to the dust event. (2) The percentage of Gram-positive bacteria (GPB) resistant to different antibiotics was altered. The abundance of ciprofloxacin-resistant bacteria increased by 24.51%, while that of clindamycin-resistant bacteria decreased by 34.64%. The d ¯ , STI, and HI of antibiotic-resistant bacteria per breath for men, women, and children after the dust event were 14 times greater than those before the dust event. (3) The diversity of airborne bacteria increased throughout the dust event. Opportunistic bacteria were found after the dust event. From a health perspective, airborne bacteria during extreme dust events should be further studied for their sources, changes, human exposure, and so forth. Background: Ureaplasma species are common pathogens of the urogenital tract and can cause a range of diseases. Unfortunately, there is still a scarcity of large-scale and cross-sectional studies on the prevalence of Ureaplasma species in China to clarify their epidemic patterns. Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed the data of 18667 patients who visited Peking Union Medical College Hospital for showing various symptoms of (suspected) Ureaplasma species infection during the period 2013–2022. The overall prevalence of Ureaplasma species was calculated, and subgroup analyses were conducted in view of gender, age, specimen types, and diagnosis in every year within the period studied. Furthermore, previous literature that reported on the prevalence of Ureaplasma species in various regions of China was searched and summarized. Results: The overall positive rate of Ureaplasma species in this study reached 42.1% (7861/18667). Specifically, the prevalence of Ureaplasma species was significantly higher in female patients, while the highest detection rate was found in the 21–50 age group. From 2013 to 2022, there were no significant differences in positive rates of Ureaplasma species among years. However, the detection rate of Ureaplasma species was decreased in COVID-19 period (2020–2022) compared to pre-COVID-19 period (2017–2019). In view of the distribution of patients, outpatients predominated, but the detection rate was lower than inpatients. Urine was the most common specimen type, while cervical swabs had the highest detection rate of Ureaplasma species. When grouped by diagnosis, the highest positive rate of Ureaplasma species was seen in patients with adverse pregnancy outcomes and the lowest rate in patients with prostate disease. The previous literature, although heterogeneous, collectively suggested a high prevalence of Ureaplasma species in China. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration was used to construct a comprehensive evaluation index system for urban waterlogging prevention and control resilience from five aspects: social resilience, economic resilience, ecological resilience, infrastructure resilience, and institutional resilience. The fuzzy VIKOR method was used to evaluate urban waterlogging prevention and control resilience. The results were analyzed at temporal and spatial scales to reveal regional differences and constraints in urban waterlogging prevention toughness and efficiently locate vulnerable urban areas. The resilience level in most of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region increased during 2015–2019, while that of Beijing, Tianjin, Qinhuangdao, and Handan slightly decreased, indicating that the capacity of these cities to manage waterlogging disasters needs strengthening. The spatial difference in urban waterlogging prevention toughness was significant: Beijing, Tianjin, Handan, Tangshan, Langfang, and Shijiazhuang showed medium and high levels of urban waterlogging prevention toughness; other cities showed low levels. How the expansion speed of the urban scale matches the construction speed of urban waterlogging prevention and control directly affects resilience at all levels. The fossils of Hamipterus tianshanensis (Wang et al. in Curr Biol 24:1323–1330, 2014) and their eggs have important scientific significance because they can provide unique information about the reproduction, development, and evolution of pterosaurs. The fossils and the rock surrounding them have, however, been weathered, which including powdering and flaking, since they were relocated from Xinjiang to Beijing. The high content of soluble salts is a significant factor in fossil deterioration because the dissolution–recrystallization process can generate tremendous pressure and lead to decreased mechanical strength. This study evaluated the electrokinetic desalination performance for the fossils, and two types of poultices employed including paper pulp from Bioline® and CKS121 (cellulose: kaolin: sand = 1:2:1, w/w). Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ion chromatography (IC), and other methods were applied to evaluate the desalination effect. The surface salt content reduction by applied direct current (DC) was about 70%, and the inner salt content reduction was about 80%. The experimental results suggest that the electrokinetic method is a promising way to desalinate fossils. Nonetheless, cracks appeared in the surrounding rock crack after electrokinetic desalination, which can be explained by the montmorillonite swelling-induced stresses. Background: Parathyroidectomy is the only curative treatment for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Ultrasound (US) and technetium-99 m sestamibi (99mTc-MIBI) scintigraphy are recommended as the first-line localization imaging modalities for PHPT in adults, but the value of preoperative imaging in pediatric patients has not been reported. Objective: To evaluate the added value of 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy in pediatric PHPT patients with positive ultrasound results. Materials and methods: Pediatric patients (≤18 years old) who were diagnosed with PHPT and underwent surgical treatment in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between January 2003 and January 2021 were included in this study. Demographic and clinical characteristics, preoperative localization US, 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy and pathology results were collected. Preoperative localization results were evaluated by comparison with surgical and pathological findings. Results: There were 32 pediatric PHPT patients with median age of 14.7 ± 2.5 years who all proved to have single-gland disease without ectopic lesions. The median lesion size was 2.85 cm (range 1.0–5.8 cm). All patients underwent US and 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy. Neck US demonstrated 100% sensitivity. Of 32 patients with a positive US, 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy was concordant in 30 (93.8%). In 2 patients (6.3%), US reported suspected multigland disease, which was correctly diagnosed by 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy as single lesions. Conclusion: In pediatric PHPT patients, US achieved high sensitivity for preoperative localization. 99mTc-MIBI scintigraphy for pediatric patients with positive US results would not increase the sensitivity. Investigating heavy metal(oid)s (HMs) in urban soils is vital to safeguarding human life and health. This study investigated HMs in soils in urban areas of Beijing, assessed their ecological and health risks, and combined principal component analysis, geostatistical analysis, and positive definite matrix factor decomposition models to analyze them retrospectively. Although the Cu, Zn, and Pb in the soils of the study area were all below national quality standards, the average levels were 1.55, 1.17, and 1.21 times higher than the background values for HMs in Beijing soils, respectively, indicating the presence of HMs enrichment in the surface soils. Neither of the nine HMs in this study caused ecological risk. The health risk assessment results show that the nine HMs in this study do not yet pose a non-carcinogenic risk. Ni and Cu have significant carcinogenic effects on humans, and children are more susceptible to carcinogenic risks, with direct ingestion being the main route of HMs exposure. The main sources of HMs pollution in soils are industrial activities, soil-forming matrices and historical sites, which account for 32.89%, 44.16%, and 22.95% of total HMs accumulation respectively. We have found that V, Mn, Co, As, Ni, and Cr are mainly from parent material, Zn and Pb are mainly from industrial emissions, and Cu is from historical remains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, China has implemented several measures to improve air quality. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region is one area that has suffered from the most serious air pollution in China and has undergone huge changes in air quality in the past few years. How to scientifically assess these change processes remain the key issue in further improving the air quality over this region in the future. To evaluate the changes in major air pollutant emissions over this region, this paper employs ensemble Kalman filtering (EnKF) for integrating the national ground monitoring pollutant observation data and the Nested Air Quality Prediction Modeling System (NAQPMS) simulation data to inversely estimate the emission rates of SO2, NOX, CO, and primary PM2.5 over BTH region in February from 2014 to 2019. The results show that SO2, NOX, CO, and primary PM2.5 emissions in the BTH region decreased in February from 2014 to 2019 by 83%, 37%, 41%, and 42%, while decreases in Beijing during this period were 86%, 67%, 59%, and 65%, respectively. Compared with the prior emission inventory, the inversion emission inventory reduces the uncertainty of multi-pollutant simulation in the BTH region, with simulated root mean square errors of the monthly average concentrations of SO2, NOX, PM2.5, and CO reduced by 41%, 30%, 31%, and 22%, respectively. The average uncertainties of SO2, NOX, PM2.5, and CO inversion emissions in 2014–19 are ±14.03% yr−1, ±28.91% yr−1, ±126.15% yr−1, and ±43.58% yr−1. Compared with the uncertainty of MEIC emission, the uncertainties of all species changed by +2% yr−1, −2% yr−1, −26% yr−1, and −4% yr−1, respectively. The spatial distribution results illustrate that air pollutant emissions are mainly distributed over the eastern and southern BTH regions. The spatial gap between the inversion emissions and MEIC emissions was further closed in 2019 compared to 2014. The results of this paper can provide a new reference for assessing changes in air pollution emissions over the BTH region in recent years and validating a bottom-up emission inventory. Long-term exposure to ambient particulate pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), but the results of previous research were limited and inconsistent. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationships of PM2.5 and PM10 with CKD. This study was a cohort study based on the physical examination data of 2082 Beijing residents from 2013 to 2018 in the Beijing Health Management Cohort (BHMC). A land-use regression model was used to estimate the individual exposure concentration of air pollution based on the address provided by each participant. CKD events were identified based on self-report or medical evaluation (estimated glomerular filtration rate, eGFR less than 60 ml/min/1.73 m2). Finally, the associations of PM2.5 and PM10 with CKD were calculated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression models. During the research period, we collected potentially confounding information. After adjusting for confounders, each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and PM10 exposure was associated with an 84% (OR: 1.84; 95% CI: 1.45, 2.33) and 37% (OR: 1.37; 95% CI: 1.15, 1.63) increased risk of CKD. Adjusting for the four common gaseous air pollutants (CO, NO2, SO2, O3), the effect of PM2.5 and PM10 on CKD was significantly enhanced, but the effect of PM10 was no longer significant in the multi-pollutant model. The results of the stratified analysis showed that PM2.5 and PM10 were more significant in males, middle-aged and elderly people over 45 years old, smokers, drinkers, BMI ≥ 24 kg/m2, and abnormal metabolic components. The objective of this study is to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of the acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI) caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) among the population of all age categories in Beijing, China. Outpatients and inpatients with ARTI were enrolled from 35 sentinel hospitals in Beijing between March 2015 and February 2019. They were interviewed and their medical records were collected using a standardized form. Their respiratory specimens were collected and tested for the nucleic acid of RSV. The RSV-positive specimens were further genotyped into RSV-A and RSV-B groups. A total of 29,923 cases were included in this study. RSV was detected in 623 (2%, 623/29923) patients, with 391 (62.8%) genotypd as RSV-A, 126 (20.2%) as RSV-B, and 106 (17.0%) untyped. The RSV epidemic season usually occurred between October and March covering approximately 90% of annual RSV infections. The RSV-infected children aged < 5 years accounted for 52.2% of the total RSV infections with cough and fever as the most common manifestations. The RSV-infected elderly adults aged ≥ 60 years have the second largest proportion (25.2%) with dyspnea and lymphocytopenia as the most common manifestations and showed an elevated rate of hospitalization, an increased rate of ICU admission, an extended length of hospital stay, and an elevated mortality compared to the RSV-infected children. The RSV infections aged ≥ 60 years old, as the second largest population of the total annual RSV infections, usually developed worse outcomes than children and should be taken seriously. Due to concealed initial symptoms, many diabetic patients are not diagnosed in time, which delays treatment. Machine learning methods have been applied to increase the diagnosis rate, but most of them are black boxes lacking interpretability. Rule extraction is usually used to turn on the black box. As the number of diabetic patients is far less than that of healthy people, the rules obtained by the existing rule extraction methods tend to identify healthy people rather than diabetic patients. To address the problem, a method for extracting reduced rules based on biased random forest and fuzzy support vector machine is proposed. Biased random forest uses the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm to identify critical samples and generates more trees that tend to diagnose diabetes based on critical samples to improve the tendency of the generated rules for diabetic patients. In addition, the conditions and rules are reduced based on the error rate and coverage rate to enhance interpretability. Experiments on the Diabetes Medical Examination Data collected by Beijing Hospital (DMED-BH) dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach has outstanding results (MCC = 0.8802) when the rules are similar in number. Extreme rainfall events have become an increasing component of the annual precipitation in China, which caused amounts of geological disasters, especially in Southwest China. At approximately 7 a.m. (Beijing time) on July 13, 2020, a catastrophic soil and rock landslide occurred in Baima Town, Wulong District, Chongqing, China. With a length of 750 m and a width of 125 m to 260 m, the landslide carried approximately 1.4 × 106 m3 of rock and soil debris and destroyed eight houses, two main roads, a shale gas pipeline, and a large amount of farmland. After the landslide failure, the accumulation zone still deformed responding to continuous rainfall. The failure mechanism of the landslide was analyzed based on the geological conditions, deformation process, and triggering factors. The research shows that the Niuerwan landslide had a complex deformation process. According to the deformation characteristics, the landslide is divided into five parts: the source area, the compression area, the rapid-sliding area, the landslide-affected zone, and the accumulation area. The source area was triggered by continuous torrential rainfall and controlled by mudstone and bedding plane. The variation of the microrelief in the study area has a significant effect on the failure model of the landslide. Precipitation triggered the failure of the steep source area which impacted the middle part. Eventually, a continuous sliding surface developed along with the weak layer, giving rise to catastrophic failure. Moreover, the accumulation area at the steep slope toe rapidly moved downward to form a debris flow under the combined action of the geological conditions and rainfall. The Niuerwan landslide is a complex rainfall-induced landslide with a unique evolution process, which can provide some useful information for the early warning and deformation mechanism of landslides in similar geological settings. Soil and road dust are important receptors of heavy metals in the environment. Meanwhile, heavy metal could transfer to the atmosphere through resuspension. Due to the serious consequences and atmospheric haze in Jing-Jin-Ji area, it's important to evaluate the pollution level, particle size distribution and sources of heavy metals. For heavy metals in soil samples, similar concentrations to the background values and no obvious pollution or low-level pollution was presented. Higher concentration of Cu (78.9 mg/kg) and Zn (261 mg/kg) were found in road dust. The source appointment results showed that Mn, Co, Cr, Ni, Zn and Pb in soils and Cr, Co and Mn in road dust were mainly from the natural sources, while traffic source contributed to most of Cu, Zn and Pb in road dust. Air pollution and ischemic stroke (IS) are both vital factors affecting the health of Beijing citizens. This study aims at exploring the associations between air pollution, meteorology, and the hospital admission of IS (IS HA). Information on 476,659 IS inpatients in secondary and higher hospitals in Beijing from 2013 to 2018 were collected. A time-stratified case-crossover design with the generalized additive model and the distributed lag nonlinear model were used. In the single-pollutant models, an inter-quartile range increase in O3, SO2, CO, and NO2 resulted in a significant highest increase in IS HA by 2.23% (95% CI: 1.56%, 2.90%), 1.53% (95% CI: 1.12%, 1.95%), 1.05% (95% CI: 0.70%, 1.40%), and 0.51% (95% CI: 0.24%, 0.79%) on the day of pollution, so did PM2.5 and PM10 by 1.13% (95% CI: 0.68%, 1.59%) and 1.19% (95% CI: 0.74%, 1.64%) at a lag of 0–5 days. There was a nonlinear relationship between meteorology and IS HA. In the multivariate model, the cumulative relative risks with a maximum lag time of 21 days of PM2.5 and NO2 were 1.11 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.19) and 0.88 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.94), while the effects of SO2, O3, and meteorology were insignificant. The findings suggested that particulate pollutants could increase the risk of IS, and the elderly were more sensitive to it, while the results of gaseous pollutants are still discordant. Fish diversity, an important indicator of the health of aquatic ecosystems, is declining sharply due to water pollution, overfishing, climate change, and species invasion. For protecting fish diversity, effective surveying and monitoring are prerequisites. In this study, eDNA (environmental DNA) metabarcoding and ground cages were used to survey the fish diversity of the Chaobai and Beiyun Rivers in Beijing. Based on the two methods, we identified 40 species, belonging to 35 genera, 18 families, and six orders. The richness of fish identified by eDNA metabarcoding was significantly higher than that captured by ground cages in both rivers. The fish captured by the ground cage method were all recognized by eDNA metabarcoding, except Squalidus wolterstorffi and Saurogobio dabryi, which were captured only in ground cages. The correlation of relative abundance between the two methods was affected by the properties of the rivers, such as the flow rate. Fish caught by ground cage in the Beiyun River were identified by eDNA, but not in the Chaobai River. Our results also suggest that the Chaobai River has higher fish diversity than the Beiyun River and different community assemblage. In addition to differences in the natural properties of the focal rivers, the development of urbanization is also an important contributor to different community structures overserved. eDNA metabarcoding as a new survey tool has great application prospects, it provides certain theoretical data and methodological references for the protection and management of river fish diversity. Air pollutants' effect on ischemic stroke (IS) has been widely reported. But the effect of high-level concentrations during people's outdoor periods among hypertension patients was unknown. Peak-hour concentrations were defined considering air pollutants' high concentrations as well as people's outdoor periods. We conducted a time-series study and used the generalized additive model to analyze peak-hour concentrations' acute effect. A total of 315,499 IS patients comorbid with hypertension were admitted to secondary and above hospitals in Beijing from 2014 to 2018. A 10 µg/m3 (CO: 1 mg/m3) increase of the peak-hour concentrations was positively associated with IS hospital admissions among hypertension patients. The maximum effect sizes were as follows: for PM2.5, 0.17% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.10–0.24%) at Lag0 and 0.22% (95% CI: 0.12–0.33%) at Lag0–5; for PM10, 0.09% (95% CI: 0.05–0.13%) at Lag5 and 0.17% (95% CI: 0.09–0.26%) at Lag0–5; for SO2, 0.87% (95% CI: 0.46–1.29%) at Lag5; for NO2, 0.83% (95% CI: 0.62–1.04%) at Lag0 and 0.86% (95% CI: 0.59–1.13%) at Lag0–1; for CO 1.23% (95% CI: 0.66–1.80%) at Lag0 and 1.33% (95% CI: 0.33–2.35%) at Lag0–5; for O3 0.23% (95% CI: 0.12–0.35%) at Lag0 and 0.20% (95% CI: 0.05–0.34%) at Lag0–1. The effect sizes of PM2.5, NO2, and O3 remained significant after adjusting daily mean. Larger effect sizes were observed for PM2.5 and PM10 in cool season and for O3 in warm season. As significant exposure indicators of air pollution, peak-hour concentrations exposure increased the risk of IS hospital admissions among hypertension patients and it is worthy of consideration in relative environmental standard. It is suggested for hypertension patients to avoid outdoor activity during peak hours. More relevant searches are required to further illustrate air pollutant's effect on chronic disease population. Groundwater is a significance source of freshwater in both urban and rural areas of the world. With the increasing groundwater pollution, it is essential to analysis of groundwater chemical characteristics and evaluate groundwater quality for water supply purpose. The study proposes basic water quality index module (BWQIM) and integrated water quality index module (IWQIM) by combining indictors, weights and model on water quality index (WQI)-based, and evaluated the groundwater quality in Chaoyang District, Beijing. The IWQIM and BWQIM were compared. Fe, HCO3−, TDS and TH were identified as key parameters of groundwater quality assessment. The water quality assessment results of BWQIM are scattered. However, the evaluation results of IWQIM are basically consistent and not influenced by indicators and weights. This module solves the problem that the weight of over standard indexes is submerged when multiple indexes are used, it is more reasonable and effective for groundwater quality evaluation, and overall situation of groundwater in the study area was concentrated in good level. Groundwater in aquifers in the study area is weakly alkaline. The Ca–HCO3 type characterized the general hydrogeochemical composition of Chaoyang district groundwater. Most samples fall in the rock dominance zone, suggesting that rock weathering and rock-water interactions are the primary sources controlling groundwater chemistry and hydrochemical evolution. The quantitative relationship between the groundwater level (GWL) and land subsidence is essential to understand, prevent and control subsidence. This study compares the subsidence due to GWL variation at different locations and aquifer layers during the operation of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project Central Route (SNWDP-CR) in China. Sixty-nine synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in Beijing from 2012 to 2017 are obtained to calculate the displacement using the interferometry technique. The results indicate that the subsidence with uplift or mitigation is consistent with groundwater rise or drawdown deceleration. The dynamic time warping (DTW) method is applied to compare the similarity between subsidence and GWL time series waveforms. We find that the similarity between these two activities tends to increase after the SNWDP-CR. The similarity between the subsidence and confined GWL is controlled by the hydrogeological setting. In general, it tends to increase from the upper part to the lower part of the alluvial fan. However, the similarity between the subsidence and unconfined GWL shows irregular pattern due to rainfall interference. The average similarity between the subsidence and GWL at depths of 100–180 m and that at over 250 m is 75% and 64%, respectively, prior to the SNWDP-CR. In contrast, these two values increase to 83% and 81%, respectively, after the SNWDP-CR. This indicates that the impact of deeper aquifers to the subsidence increases after the SNWDP-CR, and the depth of the contributing aquifer is 100–180 m and locally exceeds 250 m. Diatoms have been proven to be good indicators of natural stream conditions, but little is known about the seasonal variability of diatom communities in megacity streams. We investigated the spatial and temporal variation of diatom communities along an urban-to-rural gradient in megacity streams, Beijing, China. We found that the composition and diversity of diatom community was significantly different along the urban-to-rural gradient in streams of Beijing city. The diatom community was subtle temporal variation in the reference stream and urban upstream, but the temporal variation of diatoms was relatively greater in the urban downstream. Overall, the composition of the diatom community was relatively stable in the streams among different seasons, and the dominant species did not change much over seasons. For example, during the sampling periods, the species Achnanthidium minutissimum in reference streams had the average relative abundance of 20.3 ± 3.5%; the species Pseudostaurosira brevistriata and Staurosira construens var. venter in urban upstream had average relative abundances of 17.0% ± 0.9% and 17.3% ± 1.2%, respectively; and the species Nitzschia palea in urban downstream had average relative abundances of 18.8 ± 4.7%. There were significant correlations between the relative abundances of the dominant species and environmental variables, suggesting that the environmental variables had significant effects on the diatom distribution. Our results demonstrate that the diatom communities are relatively stable among seasons in different sampling areas, suggesting that diatoms can be used as reliable indicators for the biological monitoring of water quality in megacity streams across seasons. Urbanization has resulted in dry/wet island effects in built-up areas. Compared to the limited number of observational datasets, simulations can provide data with richer spatial distribution, thereby proving to be more helpful for revealing the spatial distribution of dry/wet islands. This study simulated dry/wet island effects during typical summer and winter conditions in Beijing by coupling the Artificial Water Dissipation Urban Canopy Model with the Weather Research and Forecasting model. Observations of relative humidity, absolute humidity, and temperature from weather stations in Beijing were used to verify the model. The results showed that in 2020, Beijing was prone to be a dry island during summer, with the relative humidity approximately 5–10% lower than the surrounding suburbs. The dry island effect was not obvious in winter, and Beijing tended to be a wet island. The influence of artificial water dissipation on dry/wet islands is higher in winter than in summer. This study compared the differences in the clinical manifestations, treatment courses and clinical turnover between mild and moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Clinical data of the patients with imported COVID-19 admitted to Beijing Xiaotangshan Designated Hospital between March 15 and April 30, 2020, were retrospectively analysed. A total of 53 COVID-19 patients were included, with 21 mild and 32 moderate cases. Compared with the mild group, the moderate group showed significant differences in breathing frequency, lymphocyte count, neutrophil percentage, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, procalcitonin, C-reactive protein, and dynamic erythrocyte sedimentation rate. In the moderate group, 87.5% exhibited ground-glass opacities, 14% exhibited consolidative opacities, 53.1% exhibited local lesions and 68.8% exhibited unilateral lesions. The proportion of patients who received antiviral or antibiotic treatment in the moderate group was higher than that in the mild group, and the number of cases that progressed to severe disease in the moderate group was also significantly higher (18.7% vs. 0%, p = 0.035). Compared with patients with mild COVID-19, those with moderate COVID-19 exhibited more noticeable inflammatory reactions, more severe pulmonary imaging manifestations and earlier expression of protective antibodies. Objective: Schizophrenia is a public concern in metropolises. Increases in city size may strengthen the correlation between prevalence of schizophrenia and indices of socioeconomic status, such as education. This study used population-based data of adults to investigate the association between education and schizophrenia in Chinese metropolises and its differences between inner city areas and outer suburbs. Methods: Data was obtained from the Second China National Sample Survey on Disability in 2006, and analysis was restricted to 189,143 participants aged 18 years or older in all counties (districts) of Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Schizophrenia diagnoses were ascertained according to the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. Logistic regression models were fitted to examine the association between education and schizophrenia. Results: An inverse U-shaped pattern between education and schizophrenia was found in inner city areas of Chinese metropolises. Compared with the primary school or below group, the odds ratios of junior high school group and senior high school or above group was 2.79 (95% CI 1.96, 3.96) and 1.45(95% CI 0.99, 2.13), respectively. In outer suburbs, junior high school (OR = 0.87, 95% CI 0.63, 1.19) and senior high school or above groups (0.58, 95% CI 0.38, 0.87) were less likely to develop schizophrenia than the primary school or below group. Conclusions: This study showed an association between education and schizophrenia in Chinese metropolises. In inner city areas, the association was an inverse U-shaped pattern between education and schizophrenia, whereas in suburban areas, the association was a negative linear pattern. Our findings can help identify high-risk populations of schizophrenia in Chinese metropolises. Programs for prevention and early intervention of schizophrenia will need to consider the socioeconomic disparities between inner city and outer suburban areas. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a common chronic disease worldwide. Ambient air pollution has long been proven to be associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) progression, but the underlying mechanism is not clear yet. In addition, previous studies mainly focused on the prevention of healthy people against the incidence of T2DM. We designed a panel study including two follow-ups and enrolled 39 patients with T2DM living in Beijing. Linear mixed model was fitted to assess the association between two pairs of variables (ambient air pollution exposure and C3 levels, ambient air pollution exposures and T2DM index). Mediation analysis of C3 between ambient air pollution exposure and indicators of T2DM progression was conducted. We found that PM2.5 exposures is are negatively associated with serum complement C3. Given that C3 might act as a protector of pancreas β cell, PM2.5 exposures could accelerate disease in T2DM populations. No mediation effects were found. Land subsidence caused by long-term over-exploitation of groundwater is the main geological disaster in the plain area of Beijing, China. To obtain accurate and dynamic monitoring information on land subsidence, primary level measurement is carried out every year. However, there are shortcomings in the existing level monitoring network and development of land subsidence, which require optimization of the level monitoring network for land subsidence. Using a GIS analysis method, a zonal map of influencing factors was created by overlaying three thematic maps including hydrogeological units; the decline rate of the groundwater level in the main mining layer; and the thickness of the compressible layer. The data were classified into 448 zones. Based on the zoning map, we created an optimal design for the location of level monitoring points, locating 220 new points. Kriging interpolation error variance was chosen to evaluate map accuracy. Standard deviation contour maps of the existing level network and the optimized level network were created, and the results showed that the error of the optimized level network was smaller than the existing level network. In order to improve the forecasting accuracy of atmospheric pollutant concentration, a prediction model of atmospheric PM2.5 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentration based on support vector regression (SVR) is established. Quantum-behaved particle swarm optimization (QPSO) algorithm is used to select the optimal parameters influencing the performance of SVR. And in order to improve the problem that the fixed SVR model is difficult to adapt to the highly nonlinear process, a simple online SVR based on re-modeling method is proposed instead of the fixed one. According to hourly PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations and meteorological conditions from May 2014 to April 2015 in Wanliu Monitoring Station of Beijing in China, the experiment is carried out based on the data of 3 months. Meanwhile, PM2.5 concentration is predicted by three different prediction methods, including the recursive prediction method, direct prediction method, and online direct prediction method. The results show that the online direct prediction method is the most accurate in the three prediction methods. In addition, compared with original particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, QPSO algorithm is tested more efficiently for the improvement of global search ability and robustness during the procedure of parameter selection. Moreover, the hybrid QPSO-SVR model proposed in this paper has higher prediction accuracy and less computational time compared with the PSO-SVR model, genetic algorithm (GA)-SVR model, and grid search (GS)-SVR model, which indicates reliability and effectiveness of the QPSO-SVR model in prediction of these two pollutant concentrations. Beijing, in the North China plain, is one of the few megacities that uses groundwater as its main source of water supply. Groundwater accounts for about two-thirds of the city’s water supply, and during the past 50 years the storage depletion from the unconsolidated aquifers underlying the city has been >10.4 billion m3. By 2010, groundwater pumping in the city had resulted in a cumulative subsidence of greater than 100 mm in an area of about 3,900 km2, with a maximum cumulative subsidence of >1,200 mm. This subsidence has caused significant social and economic losses in Beijing, including significant damage to underground utilities. This study was undertaken to evaluate various future pumping scenarios to assist in selecting an optimal pumping scenario to minimize overall subsidence, meet the requirements of the Beijing Land Subsidence Prevention Plan (BLSPP 2013-2020), and be consistent with continued sustainable economic development. A numerical groundwater and land-subsidence model was developed for the aquifer system of the Beijing plain to evaluate land subsidence rates under the possible future pumping scenarios. The optimal pumping scenario consistent with the evaluation constraints is a reduction in groundwater pumping from three major pumping centers by 100, 50 and 20%, respectively, while maintaining an annual pumping rate of 1.9 billion m3. This scenario’s land-subsidence rates satisfy the BLSPP 2013-2020 and the pumping scenario is consistent with continued economic development. Spatial variability and temporal trends in concentrations of the organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), in surface soils around Beijing Guanting Reservoir (GTR) were studied in 2003 and 2007. Concentrations of the two OCPs in soils around GTR were generally less than reference values set by the Chinese government for the protection of agricultural production and human health. Among the OCPs, β-HCH and p, p′-DDE were the two predominant compounds. This result indicates that the HCH and DDT residues in soils were primarily from historical use. Based on kriging, a spatial distribution of HCH and DDT around the GTR was observed. Spatial variability indicated how HCH and DDT had been applied and been distributed in the past. The factors that influence the dynamics of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in soils around the watersheds of Beijing reservoirs were examined. Compared with other studies on HCH and DDT in soils and established reference values, the concentrations of HCH and DDT in soils around our study area were relatively low. The relationships between HCH and DDT concentrations and land use, soil texture, and soil properties were discussed. HCH and DDT concentrations were higher in arable soils than those in uncultivated fallow soils. Although land use was the most important factor affecting HCH and DDT residues, additional factors such as soil texture and soil total organic carbon were also involved in pesticide retention in soils. The results indicated that the historical agricultural applications of HCH and DDT were the major source of their residues. Atmospheric deposition, as well as long-distance transportation and inputs from surrounding weathered agricultural soils may also serve as important sources of HCH and DDT residues in the watersheds. Performance analysis of the Pangu Plaza under earthquake and wind loads is described in this paper. The plaza is a 39-story steel high-rise building, 191 m high, located in Beijing close to the 2008 Olympic main stadium. It has both fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) and buckling restrained braces or unbonded brace (BRB or UBB) installed. A repeated iteration procedure in its design and analysis was adopted for optimization. Results from the seismic response analysis in the horizontal and vertical directions show that the FVDs are highly effective in reducing the response of both the main structure and the secondary system. A comparative analysis of structural seismic performance and economic impact was conducted using traditional methods, i.e., increased size of steel columns and beams and/or use of an increased number of seismic braces versus using FVD. Both the structural response and economic analysis show that using FVD to absorb seismic energy not only satisfies the Chinese seismic design code for a "rare" earthquake, but is also the most economical way to improve seismic performance both for one-time direct investment and long term maintenance. Fifty-seven typical surface soils and 108 deeper soils were collected from five former industrial sites in Beijing and concentrations of total Hg (ΣHg) as well as pH, total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), total sulfur, and dissolved organic carbon concentrations determined. The mean concentration of ΣHg in surface soils was significantly greater than background concentrations in the vicinity of Beijing. Forty-eight percent of the samples exceeded the “critical” concentration of 1.0 mg Hg/kg, dry weight in soils, which has been established by the Chinese government. At depths of 0–80 cm in the soil, profile concentrations of ΣHg also exceeded the background value. There were significant correlations between concentrations of ΣHg, TC, and TN in the industrial soils. The greater concentration of ΣHg in most soils could have been due in part to combustion of coal and leakage from industrial processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The origin and occurrence of organochlorine pesticides [OCPs; hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2- bis( p-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDTs)] in the surface and profile of soils from former OCPs production areas were compared with those of agricultural plots in Beijing, China in order to identify their characteristics, assess the eco-toxicological risk, and provide management suggestions. The comparison indicated heavier contamination caused by the production, storage, and waste disposal than the application of OCPs. Concentrations of HCHs and DDTs in topsoils varied by several orders of magnitude among different land-use groups. The concentrations (ng/g dry soil, geometric means) of HCHs (1958.2) and DDTs (3998.2) in the topsoils of former OCPs production factories were significantly higher than those in agricultural soils. The residue of DDTs and HCHs accumulated only on the surface of agricultural soil, but at depths ranging from 0 to 400 cm for the OCPs plant and warehouse. β-HCH and p,p’-DDE dominated in the agricultural soils, whereas β-HCH, γ-HCH, p,p’-DDT, and p,p’-DDE were dominant in the industrial soils. The risk of examined OCPs in soils on human health was assessed in light of the Dutch and Canadian soil quality criteria, and the results indicated a high risk in the OCPs production factory area and the agricultural lands with large application. To examine the correlates for syphilis and the prevalence for HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C among men-who-have-sex-with-men (MSM) in Beijing, China. A total of 541 MSM was recruited using peer-referral, community outreach, and Internet. Questionnaire-based interviews provided information including, demographics, sexual and other risk behaviors. HIV prevalence was 4.8%, syphilis 19.8%, HCV 0.4% and HBsAg 6.5%. The median number of lifetime male sex partners was ten. In the past 3 months, 20.7% drank alcohol ≥1 times per week. In the past month, 21.3 and 14.6% had unprotected anal intercourse with regular and casual male sex partners, respectively. Syphilis infection was associated with less education, alcohol use, finding male sex partners through bathhouses/public washrooms/parks, and diagnoses of sexual transmitted diseases (STDs). Syphilis is now epidemic among Beijing’s MSM. Prevention efforts are urgent as HIV prevalence is already near 5%. A systematic survey of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) residues in soils around reservoirs that supply water to Beijing, China, has been lacking. 104 representative surface soil samples were collected around Guanting Reservoir (GTR) and Miyun Reservoir (MYR) in Beijing watershed to characterize concentrations and sources of organochlorine pesticides, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Compared with other studies of OCPs in soils and with the Chinese environmental quality standard for soil, the concentrations of OCP were relatively lower in soils around the watershed. Concentrations and distributions of cadmium, copper, and lead in soils from several industrialized urban areas of Beijing, China were investigated. The mean concentration of Cd in surface soils was not significantly greater than the regional background concentration, while those of Cu and Pb were significantly greater than regional background concentrations. All soil profiles exhibited a decreasing trend in concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Pb with depth. Concentrations of Cu and Pb were greatest at a depth of 0–80 cm, and exceeded the regional concentrations. In China, “green” integrated waste management methods are being implemented in response to environmental concerns. We measured the air quality at several municipal solid waste (MSW) sites to provide information for the incorporation of logistics facilities within the current integrated waste management system. We monitored ambient air quality at eight MSW collecting stations, five transfer stations, one composting plant, and five disposal sites in Beijing during April 2006. Composite air samples were collected and analyzed for levels of odor, ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), total suspended particles (TSPs), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The results of our atmospheric monitoring demonstrated that although CO and SO2 were within acceptable emission levels according to ambient standards, levels of H2S, TSP, and NO2 in the ambient air at most MSW logistics facilities far exceeded ambient limits established for China. The primary pollutants in the ambient air at Beijing MSW logistics facilities were H2S, TSPs, NO2, and odor. Abstract  Neuroscience research in China has undergone rapid expansion since 1980. The Neuroscience Research Institute of Peking University, one of the most active neuroscience research groups in China, was founded in 1987. Currently, the institute is overseeing four research areas, i.e., (1) pain and analgesia, (2) drug abuse and acupuncture treatment for drug addiction, (3) the mechanism of neurological degenerative disorders, and (4) the role of neuroglia in central nervous system injury. The institute is simultaneously investigating both theoretical and clinical studies. Acupuncture remains the core of research, while pain and drug abuse form the two disciplines. Fifty-six representative samples of topsoil were collected around Guanting Reservoir, which is an important water source for Beijing. Concentrations of the insecticides HCH, DDT, and their metabolites were quantified by use of gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD). Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are still present in surface soils in the Guanting area. DDT accounts for about 93% of the total OCP content. Concentrations of α/γ, β/γ, and DDT/DDE are the result not only of historical use, but also of more recent depositions. Statistical analyses, including principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA), revealed associations between concentrations of OCPs and major soil characteristics. Geographical information system (GIS) technology was used to develop maps of the distributions of OCP concentrations. The areas of greatest contamination were primarily in the central part of the study area and were correlated with greater population density, heavier traffic, and more industrial activity.
