The primary natural resource we use in our daily lives for a variety of activities is freshwater for drinking and various developmental goals. Furthermore, the pace of human population increase worldwide is rising rapidly and has a great impact on the Earth's natural resources. Natural water quality has diminished owing to various anthropogenic activities. Water is crucial to the life cycle. On the other hand, chemical and agricultural industries pollute heavy metals. Acute and chronic diseases caused by heavy metals, such as slow metabolism and damage to the gills and epithelial layer of fish species, are divided into two categories. Pollutants can also harm liver tissues and result in ulceration as well as diseases such as fin rot, tail rot, and gill disease. The most prevalent heavy metals are As, Cr, Pb, and Hg, which are systemic toxicants that affect human health. These metals are categorized as carcinogens by the US Environmental Protection Agency and the worldwide agency for cancer research because they cause organ damage even at low exposure levels. Cadmium pollution turns out to be a global environmental problem. This study conducted a quantitative and qualitative bibliometric analysis based on 9188 research items from the Web of Science Core Collection published in the last 20 years (2000–2020), presenting an in-depth statistical investigation of global freshwater cadmium research progress and developing trend. Our results demonstrated that the researchers from China, the USA, and India contribute the most to this field. The primary sources of cadmium are mining, industry, wastewater, sedimentation, and agricultural activities. In developing countries, cadmium exposure occurs mainly through the air, freshwater, and food. Fish and vegetables are the main food sources of cadmium for humans because of their high accumulation capability. Source evaluation, detection, and remediation represent the main technologies used to clean up cadmium-contaminated sites. To mitigate the risk of cadmium contamination in freshwater, biomarker-based cadmium monitoring methods and integrated policies/strategies to reduce cadmium exposure merit further concern. Background: Arsenic toxicity in humans is well recognized. It has been classified as a class I human carcinogen by the International Agency of Research on Cancer. Arsenic enters the human body mainly through drinking water, dermal contact, food chain, and inhalation. The Gangetic belt of India is considered as one of the most arsenic-affected sites in India. Health risk assessment of the human population exposed to arsenic in drinking water is important. The present study was conducted to assess the groundwater quality and associated health risks on the people of Samastipur district in the middle Gangetic belt of Bihar. Groundwater samples from 40 different study sites were collected and analyzed for various physico-chemical properties of water. Results: Arsenic (> 0.01 mg/L) was present in 33% of the water samples analyzed. Subsequently, an assessment for carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic health risk (HQ) for children, females, and males in the study area was performed. Risk assessment showed that 100% of the population may be at carcinogenic health risk and 35% may be at non-carcinogenic health risk, and among these, children were at maximum risk. Furthermore, the computational assessment of the arsenic–protein interactome revealed the enrichment of cancer-related pathways. This study was conducted to inspect the spatial distribution, source identification, and risk assessment of groundwater arsenic (As) in different blocks that lie on the opposite banks of river Bhagirathi (a distributary of river Ganges), Murshidabad, West Bengal, India. It has been observed that the blocks that lie towards the eastern bank of river Bhagirathi have elevated arsenic and comparatively more reducing groundwater (lower oxidation–reduction potential and high iron). About 66% of groundwater samples across the district have arsenic concentration higher than the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible limit. Speciation of groundwater arsenic reveals that about 90% of arsenic species were present as arsenic (III). Further, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the controlling factors that favor the release of arsenic. PC1 comprises EC, TDS, As, Fe, TOC, and HCO3− with moderate loadings, which suggests microbially mediated degradation of organic matter (OM), helps in reductive dissolution of arsenic-bearing Fe–Mn oxyhydroxides. Results pointed out severe groundwater arsenic poisoning; hence, a health risk assessment was performed for the exposure of arsenic in groundwater, using incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) models coupled with Monte Carlo simulations. On the eastern bank of river Bhagirathi, incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) due to oral exposure (5th to 95th percentile values) ranged from 1.30538E − 04 to 9.31398E − 03 with a mean of 2.84194E − 03 for adults, which is 2841 times higher than the USEPA high safety risk guidelines of one in 1 million. Ever growing population constantly puts pressure on natural resources to manage the demands for their survival. This is particularly true with the agriculture sector concerning food and cash crops. Pesticides have become an inseparable part of the current agriculture and horticulture system but at the same time are adding adverse impacts on the human health and entire ecosystems. A Cross-sectional study was conducted on 500 farmers to appraise the association of pesticide toxins and self-reported health status among the farmers by using suitable statistical and mathematical techniques. In the study, most frequently reported symptoms of health issues among the respondents were related to eye illness (blurred vision, irritation), among both sprayers (43.1%) and (11%) in non-sprayers, with relatively high risk rate (RR = 3.9), followed by illnesses such as nervous disorders (headache, dizziness), 39% (sprayers) & 21.5% (non-sprayers) and skin illnesses i.e. skin itching and allergies. Chi-square analysis and odds ratios show a significant association between the farmer's education, use of safety measures and pesticide poisoning. The aim of this study was to investigate the sociodemographic characteristics of patients based on the poison chosen and different types of organophosphorus compounds. The data were collected to explore the sociodemographic characteristics of organophosphate (OP)-poisoned patients based on the source, site, and route of poisoning, education level, occupational status, and the purpose of poisoning. Furthermore, we estimated the serotonin and dopamine levels in the plasma samples of patients, and survival plots were also described. During the study of OP pesticide poisoning in 116 human subjects and 5 healthy volunteers, we observed, based on the survival plot, that75.9% of the patients were discharged, and the remaining patients died (24.1% of the patients) due to respiratory failure followed by cardiac arrest. Our findings suggest that the serotonin levels significantly (p < 0.01 and p < 0.001) decreased from 12 to 36 h, whereas the dopamine levels slightly increased from 12 to 36 h in the group with OP poisoning compared to the control group. Based on these findings, this study may aid in deciphering the precise mechanism by which pesticides cause behavioural changes that influence serotonin and dopamine levels in OP-poisoned patients. Population of white-rumped vulture has not recovered in India to a desired level even after diclofenac was banned in 2006. During 2019, there were two known separate incidents of white-rumped vulture mortality involving four white-rumped vultures in Gujarat. After post-mortem examinations, tissues of all four vultures were received for toxicological investigation at the National Centre for Avian Ecotoxicology, SACON. Tissues were screened for a set of toxic pesticides, and none of them was at detectable level. Subsequently, the tissues were analysed for thirteen NSAIDs and paracetamol. Of all the drugs tested, only nimesulide was detected in all the tissues (17–1395 ng/g) indicative of exposure. Visceral gout was also observed in all the four vultures during post-mortem. Residues of nimesulide in tissues with symptoms of gout indicated that the vultures died due to nimesulide poisoning. Although, other than diclofenac, many NSAIDs are suspected to be toxic to white-rumped vultures, only nimesulide is reported in the recent past with clear symptom of gout in wild dead white-rumped vultures similar to diclofenac. Since, nimesulide appears to act similar to diclofenac in exerting toxic effects, if veterinary use of nimesulide continues, white-rumped vulture are bound to suffer. Hence, it is recommended that nimesulide should be banned by the government to conserve white-rumped vulture in the Indian subcontinent. Further, an effective system is recommended to be put in place to collect the tissues of dead vultures for toxicological investigations and eventual conservation of the critically endangered species. Arsenic (As), a toxic trace element, is of great environmental concern due to its presence in soil, water, plant, animal and human continuum. Its high toxicity and increased appearance in the biosphere have triggered public concern. The present study measured As concentrations in soil, groundwater and rice plant samples of five selected blocks of Maldah district, West Bengal, India. Soil, irrigation water and rice plant samples were collected from the fields of the selected study areas. The results revealed the presence of As in higher concentrations than the maximum permissible limit of As in irrigation water (0.1 mg L−1 by FAO, 2010) in groundwater of Manikchak (0.553 ± 0.17 mg L−1), Kaliachak III (0.528 ± 0.20 mg L−1), and Kaliachak II (0.449 ± 0.15 mg L−1), Kaliachak I (0.207 ± 0.19 mg L−1). The soil As was also found higher in those four blocks. The As content in rice grain of the study area was positively correlated (r = 0.896**, p < 0.001) with As content in irrigation water. The data of consumption of rice per day in the survey were used for the measurement of average daily intake, Hazard quotient (HQ) and Incremental Life time Cancer Risk. Kaliachak III, Manikchak and Kaliachak II showed HQ greater than 1, indicating the possibility of non-carcinogenic health hazard due to As exposure to the local residents. The study emphasized the severity of As problem in remote areas of West Bengal where people consume As tainted rice due to lack of awareness about the As associated health issues. Health exposure and perception of risk assessment have been evaluated on the populations exposed to different arsenic levels in drinking water (615, 301, 48, 20 µg/l), rice grain (792, 487, 588, 569 µg/kg) and vegetables (283, 187, 238, 300 µg/kg) from four villages in arsenic endemic Gaighata block, West Bengal. Dietary arsenic intake rates for the studied populations from extremely highly, highly, moderately, and mild arsenic-exposed areas were 56.03, 28.73, 11.30, and 9.13 μg/kg bw/day, respectively. Acute and chronic effects of arsenic toxicity were observed in ascending order from mild to extremely highly exposed populations. Statistical interpretation using 'ANOVA' proves a significant relationship between drinking water and biomarkers, whereas "two-tailed paired t test" justifies that the consumption of arsenic-contaminated dietary intakes is the considerable pathway of health risk exposure. According to the risk thermometer (SAMOE), drinking water belongs to risk class 5 (extremely highly and highly exposed area) and 4 (moderately and mild exposed area) category, whereas rice grain and vegetables belong to risk class 5 and 4, respectively, for all the differently exposed populations. The carcinogenic (ILCR) and non-carcinogenic risks (HQ) through dietary intakes for adults were much higher than the recommended threshold level, compared to the children. The effects of copper (Cu) toxicity on the growth, pigments, protein, carbohydrate, lipid and antioxidant enzyme activities of two endemic microalgae, Chaetoceros calcitrans and Nitzchia closterium from Cochin estuary were studied and compared. The 96 h median inhibition concentration (IC50) of Cu for C. calcitrans was 143.8 µg L−1 and that for N. closterium was 204.5 µg L−1. No observable effect concentration (NOEC), lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC) and chronic value of Cu on C. calcitrans were 17.93 µg L−1, 31.91 µg L−1and 24.92 µg L−1 respectively, whereas that for N. closterium were 18.35 µg L−1, 36.04 µg L−1 and 27.2 µg L−1 respectively. Chlorophyll a and c showed significant variation from the control at NOEC in both species. Carotenoid content showed significant increase at LOEC. The chlorophyll a/c ratio significantly decreased at NOEC and LOEC of N. closterium. In N. closterium catalase (CAT) activity showed significant increase at NOEC and LOEC, but in C. calcitrans it varied significantly above LOEC. Protein content showed a significant decrease at NOEC of C. calcitrans. No significant variation was observed for N. closterium. Carbohydrate showed significant variation between the species at NOEC. Lipid content varied significantly at NOEC of C. calcitrans. Chaetoceros calcitrans was observed to be more sensitive to copper toxicity than N. closterium. The metal stress tolerance mechanism of N. closterium and its bioremediation capacity can be established in further studies. To investigate the complex Pb-Cd exposure network in school-going children, a thorough investigation of the probable exposure means (diet, water, and school micro-environments such as paint dust and school courtyard soil) and exposure route (ingestion, inhalation and dermal) was carried out in a periurban area spanning three districts in southern Assam, India. Multivariate statistical analysis was carried out to understand the complex data matrices, and the health risk assessments (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) based on US EPA Risk Assessment models were also made. We found the median values to be 0.9–4.0 mg Pb/kg and 0.21–6.2 mg Cd/kg in various food items. Groundwater also had Pb (0.13–0.48 mg/L) and Cd (0.11–0.29 mg/L). Pb levels in paint dust were within the permissible limits, but 50% of the samples had higher than permissible levels of Cd. Approximately 23% of the school courtyard soil had Pb above the global background levels, but all the samples had 4–27 times elevated levels of Cd in them. School micro-environment contributed significantly to the metal load in children due to their typical hand-to-mouth behavior and dietary intake (food and water) via ingestion was the most prominent route of exposure in children. The evaluation of the estimated chronic daily intake and the hazard quotient indicated hazardous exposure over a lifetime to both Pb and Cd, but only Cd posed a prominent cancer risk. Population detonation and rapid industrialization are the major factors behind the reduction in cultivable land that affects crop production seriously. This situation is further being deteriorated due to the negative effects of abiotic stresses. Under such conditions, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are found to improve crop production which is essential for sustainable agriculture. This study is focused on the isolation of potent arsenic (As)-resistant PGPR from the agricultural land of West Bengal, India, and its application to reduce As translocation in rice seedlings. After screening, an As-resistant PGPR strain AS18 was identified by phenotypic characters and 16S rDNA sequence-based homology as Pantoea dispersa. This strain displayed nitrogen fixation, phosphate solubilization, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase (ACCD) activity, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) production, in addition to As (III) resistance up to 3750 μg/mL. The As removal efficiency of this strain was up to 93.12% from the culture medium as evidenced by AAS. The bioaccumulation property of AS18 strain was further validated by TEM-EDAX-XRD-XRF-FTIR studies. This strain showed significant morpho-biochemical improvements including antioxidant enzymatic activities and As-minimization in plant (rice) cells. Arsenic is one of the widely dispersed elements in the Earth's crust and exists in the environment due to natural and anthropogenic sources. The toxin is greatly expanded through intensive application of groundwater in agriculture in the region within the Green Revolution framework. It is an environmental chemical element of high concern for human and animal health. Agricultural land is constantly contaminated with arsenic due to application of groundwater for irrigation purposes. Animals, being exposed to arsenic through contaminated drinking water, exhibit major abnormalities in the blood and tissues of animals prior to the excretion in the urine and feces. This present study was conducted to evaluate the hemato-biochemical indices and blood oxidative stress in thirty Black Bengal goats irrespective of age, sex, breeding system of Ghetugachi village of Nadia district of West Bengal, India, and control Akna village of Polba block of Hoogli district of West Bengal, India. There was a significant reduction in hemoglobin, red blood cells and white blood cells, packed cell volume, and total serum protein with a significant elevation of aspartate aminotransaminase, alanine aminotransaminase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine. Elevated corpuscular osmotic fragility depicted an altered mechanism associated with the deviation of the normal functioning of erythrocytes. Goats harboring in the grazing arsenic endemic zone also showed a significantly higher arsenic burden in blood. The affected goats further exhibited declined superoxide dismutase and catalase activities of erythrocytes and plasma nitrite levels with increased lipid peroxidation and protein carbonyl level. Our investigation concluded that goats of the arsenic-affected areas are suffering from a subclinical form of arsenic toxicity, which is proved through the altered hemato-biochemical and oxidative stress indices with a higher arsenic concentration in the blood. Inorganic contamination in groundwater has become a major health concern because of its acute and chronic health impacts. To investigate the major hydro-geochemical processes controlling groundwater quality in a part of the Indus river basin, 29 groundwater samples were collected and tested for major ions and potentially harmful elements (PHEs) including Mn, Cu, Cd, Cr, Pb, Fe, and Zn. The cations and PHEs were measured using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer and the anions were analyzed using ion chromatograph. Anthropogenic activities and rock–water interactions are the major factors controlling groundwater quality, along with silicate weathering and evaporation. Ca–HCO3 is the dominant water facies, followed by Na–HCO3 and Na–Cl water facies. Among PHEs, Pb is the most dominant contaminant with 21 samples exceeding WHO guidelines followed by Cr and Fe in 27% and 24% of samples, respectively. Health risk to the population for both dermal and direct ingestion was assessed by calculating chronic dose index (CDI), hazardous quotient (HQ), and hazardous index (HI) for children and adults. HQ through ingestion was highest for Cd because of its low reference dose value. HI for dermal exposure was found to be safe for both children and adults, with values below 1; for ingestion 14 samples had high HI > 1 for adults, and 27 samples for children. High HI values indicate that at a few locations, the groundwater is not suitable for consumption and can cause serious health implications. Incidences of mortality of Indian peafowl Pavo cristatus, the national bird (Schedule I Indian Wild Life Protection Act 1972), are rampant in India. Between January 2011 and March 2017, around 550 peafowl in 35 incidences were reported dead across the country. Due to the non-availability of fresh carcases, poisoning could not be confirmed. Birds which died due to kite string injuries in Ahmedabad (15) and accidents in Coimbatore (5) were tested for residues of chlorinated pesticides, namely hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT), endosulfan, heptachlor, dicofol, dieldrin and cholipyrifos. The liver, kidney and muscle were the tissues considered to document pesticide load. Total load ranged from BDL to 388.2 ng/g. DDT (95%) and HCH (80%) were detected more frequently. DDT (40%) and endosulfan (26%) contributed maximum to the total pesticide load followed by HCH (21%). Pesticide accumulation pattern among the organs was in the order of liver (123.9 ng/g) > kidney (91.9 ng/g) > muscle (19.5 ng/g) with significant difference (p < 0.05). Peafowl from Ahmedabad had significantly (p < 0.05) higher level of total pesticide (149.0 ng/g) than birds from Coimbatore (47.8 ng/g). Although varying levels of chlorinated pesticide were detected, they were below reported toxic limits. Nevertheless, persistence of chlorinated pesticides and poisoning due to modern pesticides across the entire distribution range of Peafowl in India is a cause for concern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

New York City's South Asian children and pregnant women have a disproportionate burden of elevated blood lead levels. This study is the first to investigate blood lead levels and risk factors for lead exposures among South Asian New Yorkers. A survey and a finger-stick blood lead test using a portable analyzer were administered to 230 South Asian adults and children. Blood lead levels of 5 µg/dL or higher were found in 20 % of the adults and 15 % of the children, as compared to 5 % of adults and 2.5 % of children citywide. Factors associated with elevated blood lead levels were recent repair work at home, not speaking English, Bangladeshi or Indian ethnicity, and occupational risk factors. The heavy metal concentrations in water and sediment samples were investigated in the tropical Muthupet mangrove ecosystem, southeast coast of India. The results demonstrated that, ranges of metals in water comprise of Cd-0.05 to 3.72; Cu-0.5 to 4.43; Pb-6.31 to 17.87; Zn-0.0 to12.91 ppm and sediment comprises of Cd-0.06 to 0.57; Cu-4.46 to 20.59; Pb-2.90 to 21.35; Zn-4.41 to 39.18 ppm. In all the three sites, heavy metals in sediment exhibited significant higher concentrations compared to water, except Cd. The spatial distribution of metals in water and sediment samples followed a similar pattern except Cd with the preponderance of Zn (75% of total metals) followed by Cu and Pb. Muller's Geoaccumulation indexes (Igeo) showed Cd is a potent pollutant in the ecosystem and moderately contaminated the study area. The aquaculture and agricultural culture practices follow improper disposal of municipal wastages, and idol immersion activities are the potent metallic sources for heavy metal pollution were identified by performing principle component analysis. Mercury contamination in the water bodies of developing countries is a serious concern due to its toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation. Vembanad, a tropical backwater lake situated at the southwest coast of India, is the largest Ramsar site in southern India. The lake supports thousands of people directly and indirectly through its resources and ecosystem services. It is highly polluted with toxic pollutants such as heavy metals, as it receives effluent discharges from Kerala's major industrial zone. In the present study, water, pore water, sediment, and fish samples collected from Vembanad Lake were analysed for total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MHg) contents. The maximum concentrations of THg and MHg in surface water samples were31.8 and 0.21 ng/L, respectively, and those in bottom water samples were 206 and 1.22 ng/L, respectively. Maximum concentration of THg in surface sediment was observed during monsoon season (2850 ng/g) followed by that in the pre-monsoon season (2730 ng/g) and the post-monsoon season (2140 ng/g). The highest sediment concentration of MHg (202.02 ng/g) was obtained during monsoon season. The spatial variation in the mercury contamination clearly indicates that the industrial discharge into the Periyar River is a major reason for pollution in the lake. The mercury pollution was found to be much higher in Vembanad Lake than in other wetlands in India. The bioaccumulation was high in carnivorous fishes, followed by benthic carnivores. The THg limit in fish for human consumption (0.5 mg/kg dry wt.) was exceeded for all fish species, except for Glossogobius guiris and Synaptura orientalis. The concentration of THg was five times higher in Megalops cyprinoides and four times higher in Gazza minuta. Significant variation was observed among species with different habits and habitats. Overall, risk assessment factors showed that the mercury levels in the edible fishes of Vembanad Lake can pose serious health impacts to the human population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Detailed geochemical analysis of groundwater beneath 1223 km area in southern Bengal Basin along with statistical analysis on the chemical data was attempted, to develop a better understanding of the geochemical processes that control the groundwater evolution in the deltaic aquifer of the region. Groundwater is categorized into three types: 'excellent', 'good' and 'poor' and seven hydrochemical facies are assigned to three broad types: 'fresh', 'mixed' and 'brackish' waters. The 'fresh' water type dominated with sodium indicates active flushing of the aquifer, whereas chloride-rich 'brackish' groundwater represents freshening of modified connate water. The 'mixed' type groundwater has possibly evolved due to hydraulic mixing of 'fresh' and 'brackish' waters. Enrichment of major ions in groundwater is due to weathering of feldspathic and ferro-magnesian minerals by percolating water. The groundwater of Rajarhat New Town (RNT) and adjacent areas in the north and southeast is contaminated with arsenic. Current-pumping may induce more arsenic to flow into the aquifers of RNT and Kolkata cities. Future large-scale pumping of groundwater beneath RNT can modify the hydrological system, which may transport arsenic and low quality water from adjacent aquifers to presently unpolluted aquifer. The present investigation was performed to assess the concentrations of four heavy metals-lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and cobalt (Co)-in goats reared in the vicinity of an industrial area of West Bengal, India, including soil, water, and feedstuffs; tissues of liver, kidney, lung, spleen, and muscle; and milk and faeces. In addition, histopathological changes in liver, lung, kidney, spleen, and muscle samples were examined. Mejia block as an industrial polluted site and Vatar block as a reference site (without any industrial activities and 120 km away from the polluted site) were selected for this study. The results showed that concentrations of these heavy metals in soil, water feedstuffs, all tissues, milk, and faeces were greater ( P < 0.05) in the polluted site than the reference site. The largest concentrations of Cd and Pb were found in kidney followed by liver, lung, spleen, and muscle. However, Co and Cu accumulations in the tissues were in following order: liver > kidney > lung > spleen > muscle. Concentrations of heavy metals were greater in older animals than in young ones. Haemoglobin, total protein, packed cell volume, total erythrocyte counts, and total leucocytes counts were significantly ( P < 0.01) decreased in blood of goats in the polluted site compared with the reference site. Serum glucose, creatinine, aspartate amino transferase, alanine amino transferase, and alkanline phosphatase were significantly ( P < 0.05 to P < 0.01) increased. Histological examination showed several pathological alterations including degeneration, vacuolation, and tubulitis in kidney; congestion, degeneration, periportal necrosis, and focal haemorrhages in liver; and congestion and diffuse haemorrhage in lungs. It was concluded that natural exposure to these environmental heavy metals significantly increases toxic heavy-metal concentrations in several visceral organs resulting in pathological changes in these tissues. Similarly, super vasmol poisoning is one of the commonest modes of suicidal attempt in our region. In the state of West Bengal in India, over 26 million individuals are exposed to arsenic via drinking water. Dermatological, non-dermatological disorders and cancers are associated with arsenic toxicity. Of late, there has been a decrease in the arsenic concentration in drinking water owing to governmental efforts, raising the possibility of remediation. A cross-sectional study was conducted, where 189 arsenicosis and 171 unexposed individuals were recruited at two time points, (2005-06 and 2010-11) with concomitant decrease in the level of arsenic exposure via drinking water in the arsenicosis group in 2010-11. Parameters studied included dermatological, non-dermatological health status and cytogenetic damage. Decrease of arsenic exposure (190.1 μg/l to 37.94 μg/l) resulted in significant decline in the number of individuals having dermatological disorders (P<0.01) and in the severity of each dermatological outcome (P<0.0001). Micronucleus formation in urothelial cells and lymphocytes decreased significantly (P<0.001). However, there was a significant (P<0.001) rise in the incidence of each of the non-dermatological diseases, that is, peripheral neuropathy, conjunctivitis and respiratory distress over the period. Thirteen (6.87%) of the initially recruited arsenicosis individuals died of cancer, in this period. Assessment of chemistry of groundwater infiltrated by pit-toilet leachate and contaminant removal by vadose zone form the focus of this study. The study area is Mulbagal Town in Karnataka State, India. Groundwater level measurements and estimation of unsaturated permeability indicated that the leachate recharged the groundwater inside the town at the rate of 1 m/day. The average nitrate concentration of groundwater inside the town (148 mg/L) was three times larger than the permissible limit (45 mg/L), while the average nitrate concentration of groundwater outside the town (30 mg/L) was below the permissible limit. The groundwater inside the town exhibited E. coli contamination, while groundwater outside the town was free of pathogen contamination. Infiltration of alkalis (Na, K) and strong acids (Cl, SO) caused the mixed Ca-Mg-Cl type (60 %) and Na-Cl type (28 %) facies to predominate groundwater inside the town, while, Ca-HCO (35 %), mixed Ca-Mg-Cl type (35 %) and mixed Ca-Na-HCO type (28 %) facies predominated groundwater outside/periphery of town. Reductions in E. coli and nitrate concentrations with vadose zone thickness indicated its participation in contaminant removal. A 4-m thickness of unsaturated sand + soft, disintegrated weathered rock deposit facilitates the removal of 1 log of E. coli pathogen. The anoxic conditions prevailing in the deeper layers of the vadose zone (>19 m thickness) favor denitrification resulting in lower nitrate concentrations (28-96 mg/L) in deeper water tables (located at depths of −29 to −39 m). Arsenic contamination in groundwater is becoming more and more a worldwide problem. Nearing 50 million of people are at health risk from arsenic contamination at Ganga-Meghna-Bramhaputra basin. The experimental results of the five blocks under Malda district of West Bengal, India, showed that the arsenic concentration in groundwater (0.41-1.01 mg/l) was higher than the permissible limit for drinking water (0.01 mg/l) (WHO) and FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) permissible limit for irrigation water (0.10 mg/l). The soil arsenic level (13.12 mg/kg) crossed the global average (10.0 mg/kg), but within the maximum acceptable limit for agricultural soil (20.0 mg/kg) recommended by the European Union. The total arsenic concentration on food crops varied from 0.000 to 1.464 mg/kg of dry weight. The highest mean arsenic concentration was found in potato (0.456 mg/kg), followed by rice grain (0.429 mg/kg). The total mean arsenic content (milligrams per kg dry weight) in cereals ranged from 0.121 to 0.429 mg/kg, in pulses and oilseeds ranged from 0.076 to 0.168 mg/kg, in tuber crops ranged from 0.243 to 0.456 mg/kg, in spices ranged from 0.031 to 0.175 mg/kg, in fruits ranged from 0.021 to 0.145 mg/kg and in vegetables ranged from 0.032 to 0.411 mg/kg, respectively. Hence, arsenic accumulation in cereals, pulses, oilseed, vegetables, spices, cole crop and fruits crop might not be safe in future without any sustainable mitigation strategies to avert the potential arsenic toxicity on the human health in the contaminated areas. In the present study, Arsenic (As) concentrations in underground water, soil, and plants (rice) and their inter-relationships in central and sub-mountainous Punjab, India were studied. Approximately, 32 % of the tubewell water samples had As concentrations greater than the maximum permissible limit (10 μg As L) set by the World Health Organization (WHO) whereas in hand pump waters, As concentrations were within the safe range (i.e. <10 μg As L). As concentrations in tubewell waters were significantly correlated with As concentrations in surface soil (r = 0.57; P < 0.05) and plant samples (r = 0.27-0.82; P < 0.05) in central and sub-mountainous Punjab. The presence of arsenic (As) in groundwater and its effect on human health has become an issue of serious concern in recent years. The present study assessed the groundwater quality of the Bishnupur District, Manipur, with respect to drinking water standards. Higher concentrations of pH, iron and phosphate were observed at several locations. Phosphate and iron levels were highest in the pre-monsoon, followed by monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The arsenic concentrations were highest during post-monsoon (1-200 μg L) as compared to pre-monsoon (1-108 μg L) and monsoon (2-99 μg L). Kwakta and Ngakhalawai show higher levels of arsenic concentration as compared to the prescribed World Health Organization (WHO) and Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) norms. Arsenic showed a strong positive correlation with phosphate and negative correlation with sulphate, suggesting a partial influence of anthropogenic sources. The Yarlung Tsangbo (YT) is a large river running across southern Tibet and has significant effects on its lower reaches, the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. In order to investigate the geochemical features of the YT, 18 surface sediment samples were collected; ten trace element concentrations were measured for bulk sediments and two fine grain size fractions. Meanwhile, basic physicochemical parameters and element concentrations of river water were also analyzed. Results indicated that the river water was alkaline (pH 8.42) and that dissolved oxygen was mainly controlled by river water temperature. Some elements (e.g., Zn and Ni) showed close negative relationship to mean grain size of the sediments. Concentrations of most heavy metals, except As of the YT bulk sediments, were similar to those of Upper Crustal Concentration and its lower reaches, indicating almost no anthropogenic impact. Arsenic of the YT sediments was derived fundamentally from the parent rocks of the YT Basin and was far higher than that of its lower reaches. This indicates that relatively small amounts of As from the study area were transported down to the Brahmaputra River under present, relatively dry climatic conditions. However, more YT sediments might have been transported to its low reaches during the Holocene due to the wet climate, giving high As concentration in Holocene sediments of the Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin. The presence of persistent organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in blood plasma of white-backed vulture Gyps bengalensis, Egyptian vulture Neophron percnopterus, and griffon vulture Gyps fulvus collected from Ahmedabad, India. All the samples had varying levels of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs. Statistically significant ( P < 0.05) differences among species were detected for beta-hexachlorocyclohexane ( β-HCH), ∑HCH, and dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT). The mean concentration of ∑HCH, ∑DDT, and ∑PCBs among plasma ranged from 43.7 to 136, 8.8 to 64.8, and 226 to 585 ng/ml, respectively. Among the various OCPs analyzed, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene ( p, p-DDE) was detected most frequently. The concentrations of cyclodiene insecticides detected were lower than the other organochlorine residues. The levels of pesticides measured in plasma samples of three species of vulture were comparable to the results documented for a number of avian species and were lower than those reported to have deleterious effects on survival or reproduction of birds. Although no threat is posed by any of the organochlorine pesticides detected, continuous monitoring of breeding colonies is recommended. This study is also the first account of a comprehensive analysis of toxicants present in blood plasma of vulture species in India. The values reported in this study can serve as guidelines for future research in general as well as control values during the analysis of samples obtained from birds in the event of suspected organochlorine poisoning. India, with its huge human population and fragmented wildlife habitat, is plagued with human-animal conflicts. In conflict areas, large carnivores are often primary targets for malicious poisoning. The effects of certain poisons do not stop with the target animal but also affects other species of wildlife in the form of secondary poisoning. This paper describes incidences of secondary poisoning of a tiger ( Panthera tigris) and a black panther (melanistic Panthera pardus) in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Wild boars ( Sus scrofa), which are considered pests in horticultural plantations, were the primary targets in both cases and were poisoned using phorate, a highly toxic organophosphorus compound. Tigers and leopards hold significant position in the upper most trophic level of the ecological pyramid and are grouped in schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act of India. The tiger, as a species, is currently waging a grim battle of survival in the wild. The world over, leopard populations are also dwindling. The implications of the death of these endangered apex predators due to the increase in population of the ubiquitous wild boars are analysed. Systematic investigations on seasonal variations in arsenic (As) concentrations in groundwater in both space and time are scarce for most parts of West Bengal (India). Hence, this study has been undertaken to investigate the extent of As pollution and its temporal variability in parts of Murshidabad district (West Bengal, India). Water samples from 35 wells were collected during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons and analyzed for various elements. Based on the Indian permissible limit for As (50 μg/L) in the drinking water, water samples were classified into contaminated and uncontaminated category. 18 wells were reported as uncontaminated (on average 12 μg/L As) and 12 wells were found contaminated (129 μg/L As) throughout the year, while 5 wells could be classified as either contaminated or uncontaminated depending on when they were sampled. Although the number of wells that alternate between the contaminated and uncontaminated classification is relatively small (14%), distinct seasonal variation in As concentrations occur in all wells. This suggests that investigations conducted within the study area for the purpose of assessing the health risk posed by As in groundwater should not rely on a single round of water samples. In comparison to other areas, As is mainly released to the groundwater due to reductive dissolution of Fe-oxyhydroxides, a process, which is probably enhanced by anthropogenic input of organic carbon. The seasonal variation in As concentrations appear to be caused mainly by dilution effects during monsoon and post-monsoon. Salmonella enterica serotype Newport is an important cause of non-typhoidal salmonellosis, a clinically less severe infection than typhoid fever caused by S. enterica serotype Typhi. In this investigation, the virulence genotypes of S. enterica Newport isolated from a backwater environment were compared with Salmonella Typhi from clinical cases in the same region where salmonellosis is endemic. Genotyping was done by PCR screening for virulence markers associated with Salmonella pathogenicity islands (SPIs) and plasmids. The virulence genes associated with SPIs I-VI were detected in 95-100% of all the isolates, while the viaB locus representing SPI-7 was detectable in 66 and 73% of the environmental and clinical isolates, respectively. A significant number of Salmonella Newport lacked virulence genes shdA and sopE compared to S. Typhi. All S. Typhi and S. Newport isolates lacked large plasmid-borne virulence genes spvR and pefA. Further investigations into the antimicrobial resistance of S. Newport revealed multiple drug resistance to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, trimethorprim-sulfamethoxazole, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, cephalothin, and cephalexin. In comparison, S. Typhi were susceptible to all clinically relevant antimicrobials. The results of this study will help in understanding the spread of virulence genotypes and antibiotic resistance in S. Seafood containing heavy metals as a result of environmental contamination causes toxicity in human beings. To evaluate such kind of contamination, our study targeted the analysis of metals such as lead, copper, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic in muscle tissue of the fish. The fish commonly consumed such as Brama brama (Pomfret), Rachycentron canadus (Surmai/King Fish), Rastrelliger kanagurta (Mackerel), Eleutheronema tetradactylum (Ravas/Indian salmon), and Metapenaeus monoceros (Brown Prawn) were collected from four different docks in the city. The heavy metals in tissue samples of fish were estimated using voltammeter and cold vapor atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Heavy metal concentration in the tissues varied significantly depending upon the locations from where the fish were collected. Although the concentration of arsenic, copper, cadmium, and lead were in normal range, the concentration of mercury was found to exceed the daily permissible levels (1 μg/g) as a food source for human consumption. Abstract  Groundwater for domestic and irrigation purposes is produced primarily from shallow parts of the Bengal Basin aquifer system (India and Bangladesh), which contains high concentrations of dissolved arsenic (exceeding worldwide drinking water standards), though deeper groundwater is generally low in arsenic. An essential first step for determining sustainable management of the deep groundwater resource is identification of hydrogeologic controls on flow and quantification of basin-scale groundwater flow patterns. Results from groundwater modeling, in which the Bengal Basin aquifer system is represented as a single aquifer with higher horizontal than vertical hydraulic conductivity, indicate that this anisotropy is the primary hydrogeologic control on the natural flowpath lengths. Despite extremely low hydraulic gradients due to minimal topographic relief, anisotropy implies large-scale (tens to hundreds of kilometers) flow at depth. Other hydrogeologic factors, including lateral and vertical changes in hydraulic conductivity, have minor effects on overall flow patterns. However, because natural hydraulic gradients are low, the impact of pumping on groundwater flow is overwhelming; modeling indicates that pumping has substantially changed the shallow groundwater budget and flowpaths from predevelopment conditions. We describe the toxicokinetics of mercury in two twin toddlers poisoned by an East Indian remedy for teething. Succimer (dimercaprosuccinic acid, DMSA) decreased the plasma elimination half-life of mercury by 3-fold in the patient with high exposure; a more modest effect was observed in the other twin. Succimer is a chelation agent used in the treatment of heavy metal intoxication. A water-soluble agent, it increases the urinary excretion of lead and mercury. The drug is rapidly but variably absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, with peak levels occurring at 1–2 hours. After its absorption, peak mercury excretion through the urine occurs within 2–4 hours. In the poisoned twin sisters, succimer administration led to a mercury plasma elimination half-life of 6 weeks. Although succimer has been used in mercury poisoning in adults and children, the toxicokinetics of mercury have not previously been characterized in either age group. We believe this is the first such description. More studies on the toxicokinetics and dynamics of mercury chelation with succimer in young children are needed to ensure the optimal use of the drug in this population. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes a quantitative analysis of mercury done on samples of freshwater fish, Channa punctatus, collected from Bhaba Atomic Research Centre campus and from certain beaches of Mumbai, India. Concentration of mercury found in the fish samples is much higher than the permissible level of 0.1-0.15 ppm. The study indicates that normal scale structure has circuli all over. These are the signs of calcium deposition or the growth of rings. The study demonstrates that mercury has a direct effect on the fish scales. The mercury contaminated fish can prove dangerous for people's health. So it is suggested that scales can be used to assess the heavy metal pollution in an aquatic ecosystem.

The article presents a study which reports the isolation and characterization of some mercury-resistant yeast strains capable of tolerating very high doses of mercury compounds. Researchers also determined their mercury and organomercurial resistance spectra, growth pattern in the presence and in the absence of mercury compounds. Rotten fruit samples were collected from different markets of Calcutta and Barasat, a small township near Calcutta, India. Ten grams of crushed rotten fruits were taken in an Erlenmeyer flask and five milliliter of concentrated nitric acid was added and the contents were cooled in ice-water.

An assessment of arsenic contamination in Raipur city (21°14′N, 18°38′E) of Chhattisgarh in the central part of India is reported here, for a monitoring period between November 1996 to June 1997, in airborne dust particulates. The concentration level of As were higher in the industrial site, followed by heavy traffic as compared to other sites. The monthly atmospheric arsenic deposition, in μg As per g of dust fall, of 6 sites are in the range of 0.100(μ0.020)–4.00(μ0.020); site no. 1 industrial area, 0.100(μ0.020)–0.320(μ0.020); site no. 2 residential area, 0.044(μ0.070)–0.337(μ0.030); site no. 3 commercial area, 0.093(μ0.068)–1.870(μ0.020); site no. 4 residential area, 0.111(μ0.020)–1.912(μ0.010); site no. 5 residential area and 0.068(μ0.040)–3.037(μ0.060); site no. 6 heavy traffic area. The total annual flux of As in the fall-out at different zones is in the range 0.033–1.12 kg km-2 yr-1. The month wise collection and analysis of dust fall out rate between 3.0(μ0.10)–91.3(μ1.4) mt (metric tonnes) km-2 month-1 were observed at all 6 sampling sites. High concentrations of arsenic in ground waters in West Bengal and Bangladesh have become a major cause for concern in recent years. Given the enormity and the severity of the problem of arsenic poisoning, a task of evaluating the commercially available arsenic detection field kits for their capabilities was undertaken. In the light of the findings, generic specifications were recommended which could form the basis for indigenous manufacture of these kits in the arsenic affected countries. This article presents the results of the laboratory and field evaluation conducted in Bangladesh and West Bengal of five arsenic testing field kits. The salient features of the kits, their merits and limitations have been brought out. Based on the criteria of kit design, quality of chemicals used, colour comparator charts, detection range, time required for analysis, cost etc., a comparative ranking of the kits has been made to facilitate the choice of the kit to meet specific requirements. Arsenic toxicity in groundwater in the Ganges delta and some low-lying areas in the Bengal basin is confined to middle Holocene sediments. Dissected terraces and highlands of Pleistocene and early Holocene deposits are free of such problems. Arsenic-rich pyrite or other arsenic minerals are rare or absent in the affected sediments. Arsenic appears to occur adsorbed on iron hydroxide-coated sand grains and clay minerals and is transported in soluble form and co-precipitated with, or is scavenged by, Fe(III) and Mn(IV) in the sediments. It became preferentially entrapped in fine-grained and organic-rich sediments during mid-Holocene sea-level rises in deltaic and some low-lying areas of the Bengal basin. It was liberated subsequently under reducing conditions and mediated further by microbial action. Intensive extraction of groundwater for irrigation and application of phosphate fertilizer possibly triggered the recent release of arsenic to groundwater. This practice has induced groundwater flow, mobilizing phosphate derived from fertilizer, as well as from decayed organic matter, which has promoted the growth of sediment biota and aided the further release of arsenic. However, the environment is not sufficiently reducing to mobilize iron and arsenic in groundwater in the Ganges floodplains upstream of Rajmahal. In order to examine the prevalence of lead exposure and iron deficiency in Jammu, blood lead (B-Pb) and erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP-ZnPP) levels were measured in a group of 125 children and compared with B-Pb and EP levels of 46 New Delhi children. The mean B-Pb level of Jammu children was 15 micrograms/dl and ZnPP level 46 micrograms/dl. The frequency distribution of B-Pb in Jammu children according to the 1997 CDC stratification showed that only 33% were below the 10 micrograms/dl "normal" threshold levels and 50.5% were between 10-19 micrograms/dl, an increasing level of concern. The remaining 16.5% were in the medical intervention lead poisoned level between 20-87 micrograms/dl with corresponding EP levels between 29-160 micrograms/dl. The mean B-Pb and ZnPP levels for New Delhi children were 14 micrograms/dl and 55 micrograms/dl respectively. This study on Jammu children shows a modest increase in mean B-Pb and EP levels from those in 1985; the percentage of children with higher levels of B-Pb > 10 micrograms/dl have significantly increased. Moreover, the continued underlying high prevalence of iron deficiency among these children predisposes them to increased lead absorption from various sources thus aggravating further, the detrimental effects of lead. Therefore, a more extensive screening of all children below 10 years of age and an ongoing B-Pb and EP monitoring and iron supplementation programme for Jammu and New Delhi is essential. An environmental assessment of the sources leading to serious lead intoxication problem in Jammu, a rapidly growing and overpopulated city of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is strongly recommended. This paper focuses attention on alternative modes of expressing distress and the need to analyze particular manifestations of distress in relation to personal and cultural meaning complexes as well as the availability and social implications of coexisting idioms of expression. To illustrate this point the case of South Kanarese Havik Brahmin women is presented. These women are described as having a weak social support network and limited opportunities to ventilate feelings and seek counsel outside the household. Alternative means of expressing psychosocial distress resorted to by Havik women are discussed in relation to associated Brahminic values, norms and stereotypes. Somatization is focused upon as an important idiom through which distress is communicated. Idioms of distress more peripheral to the personal or cultural behavioral repertoire of Havik women are considered as adaptive responses in circumstances where other modes of expression fail to communicate distress adequately or provide appropriate coping strategies. The article investigates the relative efficiencies of selected weeds and observes an integrated macrophyte base system for mercury detoxification from contaminated aquatic environment in India. The study revealed that there was a 20% mortality rate of fishes when exposed to a lethal concentration containing Eichhornia while 40 to 80% fish mortality was noted when exposed to Salvinia. Researchers proposed the use of vascular aquatic plants for inorganic and organic removal of pollution because they absorb cadmium, nickel and mercury. The findings of the study showed that the integrated macrophyte base system offers effective metal absorption activity of Eichhornia and Salvinia in the surface water layer.

The article focuses on the study conducted in Calcutta, India regarding the use of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in eliminating mercury and organomercurials contamination. The authors discuss the volatilization of mercury with the use of mercury-resistant bacteria as well as the volatilization and the organomercurial lyase substrate utilization patterns. The article presents a study on the comparison of the effect of cadmium (Cd) on the early development and spore germination of gametophytes of some ferns. The study collected aquatic, terrestrial, and epiphytic spores from the National Botanical Research Institute greenhouse in Lucknow, India, wherein the spore cultures used the solid Knop's medium with agar. The results showed that the toxic effect of Cd varies in different concentrations in various taxa.

The article discusses a study which examined the effects of chronically sublethal concentrations of copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) on the peripheral blood in the rosy barb fish, Barbus (Puntius) conchonius Hamilton. Ninety six rosy barbs collected from Naini Tal lake in India were divided into three groups, in which Groups I and II were exposed to metal concentrations, and blood samples were collected. It was found that Cu and Pb exposure were linked to increase and decrease in thrombocyte counts.

The article presents a study on the acute toxicity of mercury to Paratelphusa hydrodromous male and female field crabs. The study used freshwater crabs from Visakhapatnam, India field pond which underwent acclimation to laboratory conditions before static bioassays with heavy metal mercuric chloride (HgCl2). Results showed that mercury concentrations were higher for female crustaceans than males.

The article presents s study which assesses the toxic effects of emisan 6, an organic mercurial fungicide, methylmercuric chloride, and mercuric chloride on ovarian recrudescence in catfish clarias batrachus. The study has examined 40 adult female catfishes which were collected from Gangetlc riverine system in Varanasi. Results show that an interruption on the normal pace of ovarian growth has been observed.

Lead levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in umbilical cord blood samples of 205 consecutively born neonates and venous blood in 62 of the mothers. The mean (± SD) cord blood lead level was 4.7 ± 12.1 µg/dL. In the sub sample of 62 mother-baby pairs, the mean (± SD) cord blood lead levels were 1.6 ± 2.5 µg/dL and 2.0 ± 2.1 µg/dL, respectively. According to CDC risk categories, 92% babies were in Class I of which 87% had lead levels below 5 µg/ dL. The mean (± SD) birthweight in <5 µg/dL category was 2640 ± 445 grams as compared to 2617 ± 408 grams in >5 µg/dL category. The mean (± SD) gestational ages were 39.1 ± 2.0 weeks and 38.1±2.0 weeks, respectively in the two groups (P=0.014). Objective: Chronic arsenic toxicity due to drinking of arsenic contaminated water is a major environmental health hazard throughout the world including India. Though lot of information is available on health effects due to chronic arsenic toxicity in adults, knowledge of such effect on children is scanty. A review of available literature has been made to highlight the problem in children. Review Methods: Scientific publication in journals, monograph, thesis and proceedings of conferences on arsenic in regard to epidemiological, clinical and psychometric studies were reviewed. Results: Skin abnormalities including pigmentation change and keratosis are the diagnostic signs of chronic arsenic toxicity in adults. Incidence of skin manifestations vary between 1.9-37.1% in various arsenic exposed children populations in different regions of the world. Occurrence of chronic lung disease including pulmonary interstitial fibrosis was described in arsenic exposed children in Chile. Affection of intellectual function is also reported from Thailand, Bangladesh and India. Conclusion: Chronic arsenic toxicity due to drinking of arsenic contaminated water causes significant morbidity in children in different parts of the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
