Pipe structures are widely applied in industries, and different kinds of defects may occur in the structures during their long-time service. For non-destructive testing of defects in pipes of small diameter, it has to be conducted from the inner side of the pipe when there is no space for detection from the outside or the geometry of the outside tube surface is too complicated. In this work, a flexible film type Electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) probe with a dual coil configuration is developed. The new probe is flexible and can be inserted into the pipe for inspection. First, the feasibility of the new probe was studied through numerical simulation. Then the feasibility of the proposed flexible EMAT for detection of wall thinning in small diameter pipe was verified experimentally. This study considers the torsional vibration of a pipe pile in a transversely isotropic saturated soil layer. Based on Biot's poroelastic theory and the constitutive relations of the transversely isotropic medium, the dynamic governing equations of the outer and inner transversely isotropic saturated soil layers are derived. The Laplace transform is used to solve the governing equations of the outer and inner soil layers. The dynamic torsional response of the pipe pile in the frequency domain is derived utilizing 1D elastic theory and the continuous conditions at the interfaces between the pipe pile and the soils. The time domain solution is obtained by Fourier inverse transform. A parametric study is conducted to demonstrate the influence of the anisotropies of the outer and inner soil on the torsional dynamic response of the pipe pile. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new strain transducer developed mainly for the inspection and evaluation of piping systems with excessive vibration is presented in this paper. Fatigue failure induced by vibration is one of the most common causes of piping failures. Procedures to evaluate the severity of piping vibration are usually based on pipe velocity or displacement. Although simple and fast, these procedures do not provide precise information on the risk of piping fatigue failure. Through the measurement of pipe dynamic strains the risk of failure due to vibration could be determined more accurately; however, the measurement of strain is usually performed using the conventional strain gage method, a time-consuming technique that can be diffcult to implement in certain industrial scenarios. Motivated by the need of a simple and rapid method to measure pipe dynamic strains, a piezoelectric dynamic strain transducer has been developed. This work presents a description of the piezoelectric strain transducer and the preliminary results of pipe strain measurements. The transducer can be applied directly to the pipe through magnetic bases allowing for the quick measurement of dynamic strains in many points of the pipe. This paper presents an experimental investigation on wall vibrations of a pipe due to injection of a uniform bubble cloud into the pipe flow. For different bubble void fractions and averaged bubble sizes, the vibrations were measured using accelerometers. To understand the underlying physics, the evolution of the vibration spectra along the streamwise direction was examined. Results showed that wall vibrations were greatly enhanced up to 25 dB, compared with no bubble case. The characteristics of the vibration were mainly dependent on void fraction. These vibrations were believed to be caused by two mechanisms: acoustic resonance and normal modes of the bubble cloud. The former, originating from the interaction between the first mode of the bubble cloud and the first acoustic mode of the pipe, persisted along the entire pipe to enhance the vibration over a broad band frequency range, while the later, due to the process of bubble formation, successively decayed in the streamwise direction. Natural characteristics of thin-wall pipe of the compressor under uniformly distributed pressure were presented in this paper based on a cylindrical shell model. In the traditional method, the beam model was usually used to analyze the pipe system. In actual fact, the pipe segment of the compressor was always broken in the form of a long crack or a partial hole and the phenomenon was hardly explained by beam model. According to the structure characteristic of compressor pipe segment, whose radius is large and thickness is little, shell model shows the advantage in this kind of pipe problem. Based on Sanders’ shell theory, the vibration differential equation of pipe was established by applying the energy method. The influences of length to radius ratio (L/R), thickness to radius ratio (h/R), circumferential wave number (n) and pressure (q) on the natural frequencies of pipe were analyzed. The study shows: Pressure and structural parameters have a great effect on the natural characteristics of the pipe. Natural frequency increases as the pressure increases, especially for the higher mode. The sensitivity of natural frequency on pressure becomes stronger with h/R ratio increases; when L/R ratio is greater than a certain critical value, the influence of the pressure on natural frequency will no longer be obvious. The value of n corresponding to the minimum natural frequency also depends on the value of pressure. In the end, analysis of the forced vibration of a specific pipeline model was given and the modal shapes were illustrated to understand the break of the pipe. The research here will provide the theory support for the dynamic design of related pressure pipe and further experiment study should be employed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
