This work presents an engaging hands-on activity designed to teach school students about nature based solutions (NBS) and their role in achieving high-quality water systems within a sustainable circular economy. Through this activity, students actively participate in building a small constructed wetland (CW) and test its effectiveness under various contamination scenarios. The activity was tested with school teachers, undergoing refinements based on their feedback. This iterative development process has ensured the activity’s effectiveness in engaging both school students and the public. Further, the CW model can be scaled-up for specific school projects focused on improving water quality. This activity offers valuable opportunities to enhance ocean literacy, promote understanding on NBS and raise awareness about aquatic ecosystems contamination and the importance of environmental sustainability. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of a salt marsh plant and its rhizosphere microorganisms for the removal of two pharmaceutical compounds, bezafibrate and paroxetine, from estuarine environment. Plants were exposed for 7 days to a simplified estuarine medium, elutriate solution with or without sediment, doped with bezafibrate or paroxetine. Tests were done in absence and presence of nutrients or copper. Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. Ex Steud, alone or with the sediment microbial communities, contributed for pharmaceuticals removal. In the presence of P. australis, for paroxetine a 65% removal was observed. Removal increased up to 90% when sediment was present. For bezafibrate, removals reached ca. 47% in P. australis presence, increasing to ca. 70% when nutrients were added to the medium, indicating a good nutritional state can contribute for a higher compound removal. When Cu was added, 75% removal for bezafibrate and 95% removal for paroxetine were observed indicating the metal might influence the removal of the pharmaceuticals. Overall, the plant and its rhizosediments and associated microorganisms showed potential for pharmaceuticals removal from estuaries, eventually degrading the selected compounds, a feature requiring more research. Results indicate that phytoremediation could be a viable option for eliminating/diminishing the environmental impact of pharmaceutical compounds in estuarine areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The knowledge on the efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) from animal food production industry for the removal of both hormones and antibiotics of veterinary application is still very limited. These compounds have already been reported in different environmental compartments at levels that could have potential impacts on the ecosystems. This work aimed to evaluate the role of activated sludge in the removal of commonly used veterinary drugs, enrofloxacin (ENR), tetracycline (TET), and ceftiofur, from wastewater during a conventional treatment process. For that, a series of laboratory-controlled experiments using activated sludge were carried out in batch reactors. Sludge reactors with 100 μg/L initial drug charge presented removal rates of 68 % for ENR and 77 % for TET from the aqueous phase. Results indicated that sorption to sludge and to the wastewater organic matter was responsible for a significant percentage of drugs removal. Nevertheless, these removal rates still result in considerable concentrations in the aqueous phase that will pass through the WWTP to the receiving environment. Measuring only the dissolved fraction of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP effluents may underestimate the loading and risks to the aquatic environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Estuaries are often considered sinks for contaminants and the cleanup of salt marshes, sensitive ecosystems with a major ecological role, should be carried out by means of least intrusive approaches, such as bioremediation. This study was designed to evaluate the influence of plant-microorganisms associations on petroleum hydrocarbons fate in salt marshes of a temperate estuary (Lima River, NW Portugal). Sediments un-colonized and colonized (rhizosediments) by different plants (Juncus maritimus, Phragmites australis, Triglochin striata and Spartina patens) were sampled in four sites of the lower and middle estuary for hydrocarbon degrading microorganisms (HD), total cell counts (TCC) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) assessment. In general, TPHs, HD and TCC were significantly higher ( P < 0.05) in rhizosediments than in un-colonized sediments. Also recorded were differences on the abundance of hydrocarbon degraders among the rhizosediment of the different plants collected at the same site ( J. maritimus < P. australis < T. striata), with statistically significant differences ( P < 0.05) between J. maritimus and T. striata. Moreover, strong positive correlations-0.81 and 0.84 ( P < 0.05), between biotic (HD) and abiotic (organic matter content) parameters and TPHs concentrations were also found. Our data clearly suggest that salt marsh plants can influence the microbial community, by fostering the development of hydrocarbon-degrading microbial populations in its rhizosphere, an effect observed for all plants. This effect, combined with the plant capability to retain hydrocarbons around the roots, points out that salt marsh plant-microorganisms associations may actively contribute to hydrocarbon removal and degradation in estuarine environments. Total-recoverable metals (Al, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in sediments from Minho estuary salt marsh were determined to evaluate possible increase in anthropogenic contamination by metals and to evaluate the possibility of this area to be considered a pristine area in terms of metals, which can be used as a reference site for other metal-contaminated national and international estuaries/salt marshes. This study revealed that the spatial distribution of metals in the salt marsh sediments was not homogeneous and that two sampling sites (sites 5 and 7) had indications of anthropogenic contamination. However, metal levels in these salt marsh sediments were lower than those observed in the wetlands of the main Portuguese estuaries. Comparison with Portuguese and international reference values used in the evaluation of the ecological quality of sediments, indicated that the sediments can be classified as “clean sediment” and that metal levels were lower or similar (only for Cu and Ni) to the values of ERL, which are the values that define the concentrations ranges that are rarely associated to adverse biologic effects in organisms. In addition, metal levels in the sediments were in chemical forms that were not easily available to organisms, indicating that these sediments probably will not have negative influences in the organisms living in the salt marsh, although no life-form ecological safety tests have been carried out. Therefore, the Minho estuary salt marsh area can probably be considered a pristine area in terms of metals and can be used as a reference for other metal-contaminated estuaries/salt marshes. The article presents information on the role of salt marsh plant on trace metal bioavailability in sediments. It says that Results and Discussion. Plants could concentrate metals around its roots and rhizomes. In addition, they were capable of oxidizing the anaerobic medium surrounding their roots in muddy sediment. As sulphide oxidation renders metals like Cadmium, Copper, Nickel and Lead into more soluble forms, according to the proposed model, metals from muddy sites would be more available in rhizosediment than in sediment.
