While near-surface geothermal energy applications for the heating and cooling of buildings have been in use for decades, their practical adoption is limited by the energy transport rates through soils. Aquifers provide a means to use convective heat transport to improve heat transfer between the building and the aquifer. However, the solid matrix in the aquifer is carbonaceous in nature, and calcification prevention techniques in the heat exchangers for the building also lead to dissolution of the aquifer matrix. Due to the Arrhenius nature of the reaction, dissolution rates may decrease with increasing temperature. An effective medium model is derived for the energy, calcium species, and fluid transport through a dynamic calcite porous medium which undergoes a reaction between the matrix and fluid. To better discern how these competing phenomena affect thermal transport in the aquifer, a two-dimensional Cartesian system is considered, where the vertical axis is parallel to the borehole axis, and flow is in the horizontal direction. An effective medium model is derived for the energy, calcium species, and fluid transport through a dynamic calcite porous medium which undergoes a reaction between the matrix and fluid. Since the fluid velocity decays algebraically with radial distance from the borehole axis, two flow regimes are considered. In one regime, far from the borehole where flow rates are small, conductive thermal transport acts faster than the species transport, leading to a case where precipitation dominates and regions of the smallest porosity contract to limit energy recovery. In regions with larger porosity, moderate advection of the species is sufficient to prevent significant pore closures over the time scale of exploration. The second regime, closer to the borehole, larger flow rates reduce species concentrations sufficiently to dissolve the solid phase between pores. In this second regime, Taylor dispersion effects in both energy and species transport compete, but thermal conduction acts more slowly than advection, promoting dissolution. There is no standard treatment for relapsed follicular lymphoma (FL). Although platinum-based combinations are one of the most used treatments, few data have been reported in this setting. Our aim was to analyse R-ESHAP efficacy in relapsed FL patients. We retrospectively analysed 80 FL patients treated with R-ESHAP in the first or successive relapses. Responding patients received a stem cell transplantation following R-ESHAP. Seventeen histologically transformed patients were included. Median age was 50 years. At R-ESHAP initiation, 85% of the patients were in an advanced stage, 28% had a bulky disease and 40% had increased LDH. There were no statistically significant differences between POD24 and non-POD24 patients in terms of response to R-ESHAP (ORR 72% vs. 93%, p = 0.109). When analyzing R-ESHAP efficacy according to the response to the immediately previous line, patients achieving CR or PR had better CR rates to R-ESHAP than those who did not respond (CR of 57% vs. 15%, respectively, p = 0.009), as well as differences in OS (7.2 vs. 1.4 years, p < 0.0001) and in PFS (2.1 vs. 0.3 years, p < 0.0001). Background: Erosive tooth wear (ETW) has gained increasing clinical relevance. It is estimated that worldwide 30–50% of deciduous and 20–45% of permanent teeth are affected. One of the most important nutritional factors causing ETW is the overconsumption of soft drinks, but also patient-related factors like reflux or eating disorders can lead to erosive lesions. Whether acids lead to erosive demineralisation depends on their degree of saturation with respect to tooth mineral at their actual pH. Review: Fluoride compounds like sodium or amine fluoride seem to be of limited efficacy against erosion, the main reason for this is the missing biofilm in the erosive process as well as the lower pH of the acids compared to bacterial acids. This means that to achieve some kind of preventive effect it would be necessary to use products with higher fluoride concentration, which is not an appropriate option for small children, and/or to increase the frequency of application. In addition, the fluoride compound plays a role as promising effects were found when fluoride is combined with titanium or stannous ions. TiF4 can cause acid-resistant surface coatings and when Sn2+/F− formulations are applied, Sn is not only found on the surface but is also incorporated into enamel and dentine. Both effects make the tooth surface more resistant against acid demineralisation. Different fluoride-containing vehicles have been tested to prevent erosion/ETW, such as toothpastes, rinses, gels and varnishes. Toothpastes offer some degree of protection, especially Sn2+-containing formulations, but effects of the active ingredients are sometimes counteracted by the presence of abrasives. Conclusion: Detecting associated factors and influencing them is the main instrument in arresting erosive tooth wear. Objectives: We investigated the effect of different dietary substances on deciduous and permanent enamel. Materials and methods: Enamel specimens were prepared from human teeth ( n = 108 deciduous molars and n = 108 permanent premolars). We measured the chemical parameters (pH, titratable acidity, viscosity, calcium, phosphate, fluoride concentration and degree of saturation) of nine dietary substances. The teeth were immersed in the respective substance (2 × 2 min; 30 °C; shaking), and we measured the baseline surface hardness (SH) in Vickers hardness numbers (VHN), and the changes in SH after 2 min (ΔSH) and the 4 min (ΔSH) immersion. We analysed the differences between deciduous and permanent teeth using the Wilcoxon test and correlated ΔSH to the different chemical parameters. Results: Deciduous teeth were significantly softer (549.53 ± 59.41 VHN) than permanent teeth (590.15 ± 55.31 VHN; p < 0.001) at baseline, but they were not more vulnerable to erosive demineralization. Only orange juice, which presented milder erosive potential, caused significantly more demineralisation in deciduous teeth at ΔSH. Practically all chemical parameters significantly correlated with ΔSH ( p < 0.05). Substances with lower pH, higher titratable acidity, lower Ca, higher P and lower F concentrations, higher viscosity and more undersaturated solutions presented more erosive demineralisation. Conclusion: Different parameters in dietary substances affect erosive demineralisation in deciduous and permanent teeth, but we generally observed no differences in susceptibility to erosion between both types of teeth; only orange juice (less severe acid conditions) caused perceptible differences. Clinical relevance: We observe that permanent teeth are harder than deciduous teeth, but most substances cause no perceptible difference in erosive demineralisation in both types of teeth. NOTCH1 has been found recurrently mutated in a subset of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). To analyze biological features and clinical impact of NOTCH1 mutations in CLL, we sequenced this gene in 565 patients. NOTCH1 mutations, found in 63 patients (11%), were associated with unmutated IGHV, high expression of CD38 and ZAP-70, trisomy 12, advanced stage and elevated lactate dehydrogenase. Sequential analysis in 200 patients demonstrated acquisition of mutation in one case (0.5%) and disappearance after treatment in two. Binet A and B patients with NOTCH1-mutated had a shorter time to treatment. NOTCH1-mutated patients were more frequently refractory to therapy and showed shorter progression-free and overall survival after complete remission. Overall survival was shorter in NOTCH1-mutated patients, although not independently from IGHV. NOTCH1 mutation increased the risk of transformation to diffuse large B-cell lymphoma independently from IGHV, with this being validated in resampling tests of replicability. In summary, NOTCH1 mutational status, that was rarely acquired during the course of the disease, identify a genetic subgroup with high risk of transformation and poor outcome. Valid and reproducible measurements of limb alignment are prerequisites for planning, performing and evaluating TKAs. Although navigation systems have been shown to be reproducible tool for intraoperative TKA alignment measurements, particular doubt has been raised on the correlation with postoperative radiographic measurements. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether the association of postoperative radiographic and navigation measurements of limb alignment was dependent on the time of acquisition. For this purpose, we retrospectively compared two groups of patients who underwent computer-assisted cemented TKA for osteoarthritis of the knee. Intraoperative navigation measurements (OrthoPilot™, Aesculap, Tuttlingen, Germany) were recorded before any cuts were made and again after implants had been placed. Long leg standing radiographs were acquired preoperatively in both the groups and either 2 weeks or 3 months postoperatively and AP limb alignment measurements were correlated with those of the respective navigation assessments. Preoperative deformity was similar in both the groups and correlation between radiographic and navigation measurements was excellent in both groups ( ρ = 0.845 and 0.945, respectively). However, both mean and maximum discrepancies between radiographic and navigation measurements of leg alignment were significantly larger when radiographs were obtained 2 weeks (2.6° ± 2.1°, max. 10°) when compared with 3 months (1.8° ± 1.4°, max. 5°) postoperatively ( P = 0.026). Accordingly, correlation between radiographic and navigation measurements was poor when radiographs were obtained 2 weeks postoperatively ( ρ = 0.26, n.s.) but in the range of preoperative assessments when obtained 3 months postoperatively ( ρ = 0.841, P < 0.001). Radiographic and navigation measurements of TKA limb alignment correlate well preoperatively. Equally good correlations can only be achieved when postoperative radiographic measurements are delayed to a time when more patients achieve full or near-full extension and are able to bear full weight leading to more valid radiographs. Objective: To prospectively investigate the feasibility, image quality and radiation dose estimates for computed tomography angiography (CTA) of the pulmonary veins and left atrium using prospective electrocardiography (ECG)-triggered sequential dual-source (DS) data acquisition at end-systole in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation undergoing radiofrequency ablation.Methods: Thirty-five patients (mean age 66.2 +/- 12.6 years) with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation underwent prospective ECG-triggered sequential DS-CTA with tube current (250 mAs/rotation) centred 250 ms past the R-peak. Tube voltage was adjusted to the BMI (<25 kg/m(2): 100 kV, >25 kg/m(2): 120 kV). Presence of motion or stair-step artefacts was assessed. Effective radiation dose was calculated from the dose-length product.Results: All data sets could be integrated into the electroanatomical mapping system. Twenty-two patients (63%) were in sinus rhythm (mean heart rate 69.2 +/- 11.1 bpm, variability 1.0 +/- 1.7 bpm) and 13 (37%) showed an ECG pattern of atrial fibrillation (mean heart rate 84.8 +/- 16.6 bpm, variability 17.9 +/- 7.5 bpm). Minor step artefacts were observed in three patients (23%) with atrial fibrillation. Mean estimated effective dose was 1.1 +/- 0.3 and 3.0 +/- 0.5 mSv for 100 and 120 kV respectively.Conclusion: Imaging of pulmonary vein anatomy is feasible using prospective ECG-triggered sequential data acquisition at end-systole regardless of heart rate or rhythm at the benefit of low radiation dose. In this paper we present first results from a 8Li electromagnetic neutron-breakup experiment. Specific reactions studied were Pb( 8Li, 7Li+ n) Pb and C( 8Li, 7Li+ n) C at 41MeV/nucleon beam energy. This is an effort to compare the results of a Coulomb dissociation experiment with the well determined ( n,γ) reaction cross sections at astrophysical energies. The angular dependence of the cross section above 7 degree, which is the grazing angle of 8Li- Pb system, is similar in shape for lead and carbon and approximately proportional to A 2/3 in magnitude indicating that the nuclear dissociation is the main component in this region. At very forward angles the angular distributions differ significantly and the electromagnetic dissociation dominates for the lead, although the nuclear contribution is not negligible. Very neutron-deficient fragments were produced by projectile fragmentation of a 140 MeV/ nucleon 78Kr primary beam on a beryllium target. The secondary fragments were unambiguously identified after separation in the A1900 fragment separator. Three events of 60Ge and four events of 64Se have been observed for the first time, making 60Ge the heaviest known isotone of the N = 28 neutron shell. No events of 59Ga and 63As have been observed providing very strong evidence that these nuclei are unbound with respect to proton emission. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breakup reactions were used to study the ground-state configuration of the neutron-rich isotope 23O. The 22O fragments produced in one-nucleon removal from 23O at 938 MeV/nucleon in a carbon target were detected in coincidence with de-exciting γ rays, allowing to discern between 22O ground-state and excited-states contributions. From the comparison of exclusive experimental momentum distributions for the one-neutron removal channel to theoretical momentum distributions calculated in an Eikonal model for the knockout process, and spin and parity assignment of Iπ = 1/2+ was deduced for the 23O ground state. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX) is frequently used for morphological and qualitative chemical characterization of different materials. The applicability of this method for phase identification, is, however, often underestimated. The application of SEM/EDX for the characterization of different phases in fresh and altered municipal-waste incinerator bottom-ash samples with high lateral resolution is presented. Polished thin sections were prepared from the samples, but fresh fracture surfaces were also used. The EDX analyses were performed by using the correction procedures of a conventional standardless ZAF correction, a peak-to-background ZAF correction, and a correction method for light-element analysis. Because of their highly reactive properties the bottom-ash SEM samples require a special method of preparation. The method facilitates nondestructive preparation of the sensitive bottom-ash alteration phases (e.g. cement phases, hydroxides, salts) and their microstructures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One-neutron removal cross-sections ( ) of 17, 19C in various targets at about 900 MeV/nucleon, and one-proton removal cross-sections ( ) of 8, 10B at about 1400 MeV/nucleon were measured using the fragment separator FRS at GSI. A significant increase of for 19C compared to its neighbors was observed. The same behavior was found for for the neutron-deficient nucleus 8B compared to the stable isotope 10B. We investigated the effects of unilateral cold-water vestibular stimulation on healthy subjects' performance in two cognitive tasks known to be differentially mediated by the two cerebral hemispheres. In a first experiment (right-hemisphere task), subjects memorized object-location associations while being stimulated with cold water in the left ear or right ear or not at all (control group). In the second experiment (left-hemisphere task), subjects memorized a list of sequentially presented function words while being stimulated in the same manner as the subjects in the first experiment. A recall phase followed each encoding phase. In the first experiment, subjects who had been stimulated in the left ear recalled the object locations significantly faster than subjects who had been stimulated in the right ear and those in the control group. The second experiment yielded the reverse pattern: correct word recognition was faster for subjects who had been stimulated in the right ear than for subjects stimulated in the left ear and those of the control group. We suggest that unilateral caloric stimulation leads to a selective activation of contralateral cerebral structures and speeds up cognitive processes mediated by these structures. The potency and specificity of a novel organic Ih current blocker DK-AH 268 (DK, Boehringer) was studied in cultured rat trigeminal ganglion neurons using whole-cell patch-clamp recording techniques. In neurons current-clamped at the resting potential, the application of 10 microM DK caused a slight hyperpolarization of the membrane potential and a small increase in the threshold for action potential discharge without any major change in the shape of the action potential. In voltage-clamped neurons, DK caused a reduction of a hyperpolarization-activated current. Current subtraction protocols revealed that the time-dependent, hyperpolarization-activated currents blocked by 10 microM DK or external Cs+ (3 mM) had virtually identical activation properties, suggesting that DK and Cs+ caused blockade of the same current, namely Ih. The block of Ih by DK was dose-dependent. At the intermediate and higher concentrations of DK (10 and 100 microM) a decrease in specificity was observed so that time-independent, inwardly rectifying and noninactivating, voltage-gated outward potassium currents were also reduced by DK but to a much lesser extent than the time-dependent, hyperpolarization-activated currents. Blockade of the time-dependent, hyperpolarization-activated currents by DK appeared to be use-dependent since it required hyperpolarization for the effect to take place. Relief of DK block was also aided by membrane hyperpolarization. Since both the time-dependent current blocked by DK and the Cs+-sensitive time-dependent current behaved as Ih, we conclude that 10 microM DK can preferentially reduce Ih without a major effect on other potassium currents. New experimental data has been obtained for thePb(α, α′) reaction induced by 160 MeV alpha particles, for inelastic scattering to forward angles. We use these data to investigate the applicability of the multistep scattering theory of Feshbach, Kerman, and Koonin for describing this reaction. The mechanism we study, following the work of Gadioli et al. [1], is of the incident alpha particle remaining intact throughout the scattering process, exciting nucleon particle-hole pairs through multistep process. We conclude that this mechanism, combined with compound nucleus decay at low emission energies, can account for much of the observed data. However, there are indications that other processes also contribute at energies above the compound nucleus emission regime, and we outline future theoretical analyses that are needed. In the leaves of Coffea arabica L., purine alkaloid formation was estimated by analyzing the theobromine and caffeine content and by measuring the methylation rate of [2-C]theobromine to [2-C]caffeine in short-term experiments (6-24 h). At the same time, growth (in terms of dry weight and area), net photosynthesis (NPS), and dark respiration were determined. During leaf development, which was considered to be terminated when NPS was at a maximum (60-80 μmol g s) and dark respiration at a minimum (5-7.5 μmol g s), the content of theobromine and the velocity of caffeine formation were both found to decrease by a factor of more than 100. The close correlation between the theobromine content and the methylation rate is suspended when purine alkaloid formation is influenced by factors other than leaf development. Among these factors, temperature is the most effective: the velocity of caffeine biosynthesis is increased by raising the temperature and vice versa. Although the plants were well irrigated, a drastic decrease of NPS in the afternoon was observed under all environmental conditions tested. Light saturation was reached between 170-360 μmol m s. Damage to visual cortical areas 17, 18, and 19 in the cat produces severe and long-lasting deficits in performance of form and pattern discriminations. However, with extensive retraining the animals are able to recover their ability to discriminate form and pattern stimuli. Recent behavioral experiments from this laboratory have shown that a nearby region of cortex, the lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS area), plays an important role in this recovery (Wood et al., 1974; Baumann and Spear, 1977b). The present experiment investigated the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms of the recovery by recording from single neurons in the LS area of cats which had recovered from long-term visual cortex damage. Five adult cats received bilateral removal of areas 17, 18, and 19. They were then trained to criterion on two-choice brightness, form, and pattern discriminations. Recording from LS area neurons was carried out after the behavioral training, from 3 to 7 months after the visual cortex lesions. The properties of these neurons were compared to those of LS area neurons in normal cats (Spear and Baumann, 1975) and in cats with acute or short-term visual cortex damage and no behavioral recovery (Spear and Baumann, 1979). The results showed that all of the changes from normal which were produced by acute visual cortex damage were also present after the behavioral recovery. Moreover, all of the response properties of LS area neurons which remain after acute visual cortex damage were present in similar form after the behavioral recovery. There was no evidence for any functional reorganization in the LS area concomitant with its role in the behavioral recovery. These results suggest that functional reorganization plays little or no role in recovery from visual cortex damage in adult cats. Rather, the recovery of form and pattern discrimination ability appears to be based upon the functioning of residual neural processes in the LS area which remain after the visual cortex damage. During fruit development the relative caffeine content of the pericarp falls from 1.68% to 0.24% on a dry weight basis, but remains more or less constant in the seed (about 1.25%). On an absolute basis, the pericarp has twice as much and the seed twenty times as much caffeine at maturity as at the beginning of fruit development. Tissue cultures of seed tissue (endosperm) produce caffeine and release it into the growth medium. Both pericarp and endosperm fed with NaHCO synthesize ring-labelled caffeine. Caffeine transport in small amounts from leaf to leaf was demonstrated by application of doubly-labelled caffeine. There was no translocation from the subtending leaves into the fruits, but heavy translocation from the pericaprp into the seed tissue could be shown. The results were confirmed by the analysis of grafts between caffeine-containing and caffeine-free species. A fundamental question in nuclear physics is what combinations of neutrons and protons can make up a nucleus. Many hundreds of exotic neutron-rich isotopes have never been observed; the limit of how many neutrons a given number of protons can bind is unknown for all but the lightest elements, owing to the delicate interplay between single particle and collective quantum effects in the nucleus. This limit, known as the neutron drip line, provides a benchmark for models of the atomic nucleus. Here we report a significant advance in the determination of this limit: the discovery of two new neutron-rich isotopes—40Mg and 42Al—that are predicted to be drip-line nuclei. In the past, several attempts to observe 40Mg were unsuccessful; moreover, the observation of 42Al provides an experimental indication that the neutron drip line may be located further towards heavier isotopes in this mass region than is currently believed. In stable nuclei, attractive pairing forces enhance the stability of isotopes with even numbers of protons and neutrons. In contrast, the present work shows that nuclei at the drip line gain stability from an unpaired proton, which narrows the shell gaps and provides the opportunity to bind many more neutrons. Suspension cultures of Coffea arabica L. are a useful source for methyltransferase preparations of high activity catalysing the transfer of methylgroups from S-adenosyl-L-methionine to 7-methylxanthine and to theobromine producing theobromine and caffeine respectively. Surprisingly, these enzyme activities are not correlated with the availability of precursors during a culture cycle. They are highest in the growth phase when supply of precursors is reduced. Mixed substrate experiments and time dependent changes in the enzyme activity ratio provide indirect evidence for the existence of two separate enzymes catalysing the final methylations in caffeine biosynthesis. In meristematic root tip cells of Scilla sibirica (2 n=12 and 3 n=18) the following results were obtained with the aid of autoradiography: 1. The average duration of the mitotic cycle (2 n=12) is 69.5 h. The G-phase lasts 36.5 h, the DNA synthetic phase 17.5 h, the G-phase 8 h and mitosis 7.5 h. 2.
